Meredith Vargas has been my vet for years, she runs Culpeper Animal Hospital. She has been everything I could need in a vet. As a college student I am always coming and going from home. She makes last minute appointments when needed and always makes me feel like I'm doing the right thing. She gives real advice that fit my needs and my dogs needs. I always know what treatment is occurring and the cost I am facing before treatment. I have boarded my dog there multiple times and she has always come back happy. My dog has a nervous gnawing at her paw, often becomes raw and bleeds when I'm away. Each time she has stayed there she hasn't had it happen which means she is comfortable there! The pricing here has become insane, and we have a different vet every time we visit. I have never seen Dr. Vargas in the office or for an exam. Unfortunately the care and facilities nowhere nearly match the cost, so after years of watching things quickly go south we are switching vets. read more

I had taken my cat here a few times, with my boyfriend and I noticing at every appointment there seems to be primarily a focus on accruing large bills of unnecessary expenses for their clients instead of allowing clients to come in purely for the pet care they're seeking. I recently tried making an arrangement to pick up my cat's prescription medication only to be told on the phone by a woman that they're not going to allow me to pick up medication unless I make an appointment to get X-rays and injections for my cat-you know, extra expenses that are costly that I can't afford right now nor that my cat really needs since they've been bouncing back extremely well on the medication alone. The prices are also very steep here. $100 just for walking in the door for the appointment. It's literally a $400 expense everytime you make an appointment here because they get insistent on tacking on expenses. The visitations become less about real animal welfare and more about squeezing every last dollar out of you. read more

This morning we went to Culpeper Animal Hospital to have an injured stray kitten euthanized. They were able to fit us in right away. The staff were so kind and compassionate. They gave us a card with the kitten's paw prints which was so thoughtful. I would definitely recommend Culpeper Animal Hospital. read more

If there was an option for zero stars that's what it would have gotten. I have been here with my dog multiple times and never even had the issue resolved. I went in for a second appointment for the same issue. My dog had been there before and they knew he was very active and nervous but didn't mention anything when scheduling my follow up appointment that he might need meds for his next appointment. I took off work to take him in for them to charge me for a full exam but didn't even do the exam stating he was too active and gave me medication to calm him down. I don't understand why they wouldn't mention about medication before so I didn't waste a whole day for nothing. So I was trying to set another follow up appointment but they wouldn't put the money I already paid for nothing done towards my follow up appointment. They are extremely rude, and won't even listen to concerns. It's a waste of time and money. Don't go. read more

We have taken our cat here several times in past few years for check ups shots etc...... and have spent a couple thousand dollars. Recently our cat was attacked and wounded by another cat. We took our cat in to get stitches. The vet made some very questionable decisions regarding the health of our cat. The women in the office including the vet were not kind and very cold. They kept trying to upsale us on things our cat did not need. My cats health wasn't their main priority but making a profit seems to be their main focus not to mention they don't allow patients in the building using covid as their reason. I would advise everyone NOT go to Culpeper Animal Hospital unless you want to get taking advantage of. read more

We've been taking our dog here for 4 months & have never had a bad experience. The staff is always very friendly, the hours are great for all schedules, & the prices are very reasonable. They're easy to make appointments with on the phons or online. They have an online pet portal so you can schedule appts, grooming, baths, etc. Love this place! read more

I came home on a Wednesday night and my nearly 18 year old cat was very sick. I went to CAH first thing Thursday morning. They didn't have any available appointments, but if I was willing to wait, they could squeeze me in. Not only did I not have to wait very long, but they put me and my cat in a private room so my cat wouldn't be frightened by the dogs in the waiting room. Dr. Vargas and the technician were also very accommodating and gentle with my very skittish cat. Although Dr. Vargas did all she could, my cat's illness was too far gone so on Friday morning I had to put her to sleep. From the moment I walked in until the day I picked up my sweet Autumn's ashes, the staff went above and beyond in caring for Autumn and being genuinely sympathetic to me as well. I felt like they dropped everything just to help me. They also acted like this was the first pet they had to put to sleep. They were not cold and distant, but extremely sensitive about the whole situation. This was one of the most difficult things I ever had to do, but I will always be grateful to Dr. Vargas and her staff for their professionalism and empathy. read more

Recently, my old dog died following a series of ailments. He suffered his pain with dignity but his eventual death was horrific due to this Practice's inhumanity. It took them over 50 hours to send a vet to put her down after I first called because the old dog began to cry with agonizing pain. I had to listen to her for two days while I got excuse after excuse why they could not come. I should have been suspicious when this Practise refused me permission to fill perscriptions online under the excuse of "We cannot guarantee what they sell online is real". Funny enough, what they sold me was almost twice the price of the online price. Then the penny dropped. MY dog was dying and I would no longer be a customer. And they had long-term customers to deal with. It's all about the money here. Watch closely. And don't have your dog endure what my old buddy did. read more

Just had a great experience. Both of my small dogs had their annual physicals and shots. Dr. Vargas couldn't be nicer or more attentive. I was really impressed with her knowledge and compassion. I had heard about her work with spay and neuter clinics in Guatemala and with the local shelters and was really pleased to finally meet her. I would recommend CAH to all of my friends. read more

I took my newly adopted kitten here because he had roundworms. He was fully vaccinated upon adoption from Petsmart but when I brought him here the vet gave him another dose of medicine for distemper without asking me and charged me thirty some dollars for it! He did NOT need another distemper treatment. She then gave him one tablet to treat his worms but did not tell me that he would need a second dose two weeks later. His roundworms were not fully treated and I ended up taking him elsewhere where they gave me two dosed of meds for WAY cheaper than what Culpeper Animal Hospital charged. I will not be using them again. read more

Worst ever experience at a vet. I have never seen such incompetence and disregard for the welfare of an animal. The receptionist was so busy trying to add procedures on my bill that she didn't even listen to what I wanted done and shots had to be given at the last minute. They made me bring my cat in at 8:30 for his shave down, but only got to him at 12:30. Of course by then he was aggressive so they sedated him. They told me to come and get him at 3:30, but he was still sedated! When we got home, still under the effects of the sedation and the shot given at the last minute, he was so weak he could barely walk, but so hungry that all he could think about was eating. Finally, this is the best part, when I called, the vet told me that it was true that they should have kept him longer after the sedation, but that they had decided to close the office early because of the inclement weather. Then there was the bill: the sedation alone, which they wouldn't have needed if they hadn't waited so long, was close to a 100$... Nice way to pad a bill. read more

They do unnecessary porcedures ("for prevention") just to make money and not in the best interest of the animal. I stopped taking my pets here after too many bad experiences over the years. I have had some good experiences here too and I certainly feel the vets are knowledgeable. However, they missed a cancer in my service dog which i figured maybe anyone could. Then when my cat was there for a wellness check they failed to observe a lump on him and when i called back to ask about it they said it would cost me another office visit fee and exam fee to have the lump examined the next day. I had just spent hundreds there. Another time I brought my dog in for a bath and they refused unless she also got vaccines then ...she was not due for these vaccines. One of the shots they wanted to give her was rabies which she had gotten 10 days previous IN THEIR facility. They refused to bathe her unless I agreed to give her shots she did not need. I took my cat there when he was sick with a bladder infection. I told them this is what he had. He had been treated there several times over the years for bladder infections and I knew the symptoms. They wanted to keep him there all day to see if he would urinate for them then ended up drawing urine from his bladder and finally diagnosed the bladder infection. I went to pick him up and was charged over $400. They had given him vaccines he didn't need (even if he did need them you do not vaccinate a sick cat) and also wormed him even though he had no signs of parasites and is an elderly indoor only cat. This is also not something you do to a cat when it is sick unless it is needed. They did all sorts of unnecessary proceedures just to make money. When confronted about what they did...I was told "We thought we should do all this while we had him here in case we don't see him again." He has been there at least twice a year for a long time. Besides ...getting $$ what you can while you have the animal is not rationale for unneessary treatments to a sick elderly animal. It took me months to get him healthy again after that visit. I have stopped going there and now travel 30 miles to a vet I trust in Warrenton. They also wanted to keep my sick puppy overnight when no one is there. From 7 pm to 7 am the sick puppy would be in a cage lying in its own excrement, vomit, urine, etc. I took her home at night and took care of her. Why pay you to keep my sick animal in a cage when no one is around? That "hospital fee" is outrageous for nothing. This place is certainly focused on money first animals second. They are the most expensive vet around this area when I call for price comparison. Nope not going here anymore. read more
