Enter: Cummings Chocolate Studios, our unexpected cocoa savior. Like a sweet oasis in a barren land of closed signs, Cummings was open and ready to feed our travel-weary souls. We picked up a couple of caramel apples (which were decent, not life-changing -- more "hey, that was nice" than "tell my therapist about it"). But the real showstoppers? The chocolates. We really REALLY love their dark chocolate and milk chocolate sandwich mints, that we buy several boxes at a time and their Victoria Rum Truffle (I think is the name), but other than that...their service SUX, the employees don't seem to know their products and I've had to help them find things, for other customers. It's weird. It's happened with not just one, but several employees. I don't get it. It's a small store. I asked about gift ideas and they really don't have answers, despite their "gift basket" displays, which are super unappealing. Benefits: You get 1 free sample, there's a seating area and parking. This is my neighborhood chocolate shop so conveniently located next to Liberty park. And it has the best chocolate covered grapes you will ever have. The strawberries are really good as well but the grapes are so addicting. I don't need a special occasion to get these, I just stop by after a run and treat my self. They do close at 6pand sometimes sell out of the chocolate covered grapes, strawberries and raspberries early but I have their number on speed dial. They also have a lot of other prepackaged chocolate treats that are tasty like chocolate covered cinnamon bears, pretzels, caramel hearts and nut varieties beside the boxed chocolates you can get. They have been in slc for over 50 years and I'm not sure they have ever updated their motif but it's still charming nonetheless. terrible experience with Cummings. Placed a large order that was supposed to ship Friday Dec. 6th...was contacted by Cummings to pay more for shipping as there was a glitch in their web site. Paid and additional $28.00 for shipping on top of my almost $520.00 order. I kept checking with USPS with the tracking number Cummings email to me only to discover the package had not left Cummings yet...this was today Dec. 11th and still the tracking showed the package had not made it to the post office yet. I left a message at Cummings and also sent an email. Called several times and no answer and was finally able to talk to a person that was quite the little smart ass. She insisted the package had not been scanned in yet when all the while I suspect it never left Cummings. I insisted on a refund only to be told I would have to wait until I got the package and send it back. I say NO...that will not work. So they refunded part of the amount...it was short $56.00 so I wrote an email explaining I want the additional $56.00 refunded too. That has not shown up yet. All I can say is I will not be recommending Cummings nor will I be patronizing them again. Sad too because my order was for elderly people that were raised in Salt Lake City and would have been the recipients of the candy. When I want the best fresh made chocolate in town I go to Cummings! They have the best variety of chocolates! Chocolate covered grapes are my 2nd favorite but my first choice favorite is getting their chocolate dipped strawberries! They come in a 1/2 or full dozen packaged in cute egg cartons. (Strawberries are best eaten within 24 hrs) I also love their mint chocolate and tbh I've loved everything I've tried or sampled from there. Many moons ago, I thought their chocolates were the stuff dreams were made of. Yesterday, after many intervening years of not having any, I bought some of "triple-flavor opera" and vanilla creme truffles. Now, I am no expert on this thing called "life" but it seems that either my memory is flawed, or my palate has changed drastically, or.... the quality of their stuff has taken a considerable hit. I hate the idea that they have taken shortcuts in how they make their chocolates, or that they have changed the recipes for other reasons. At the same time, I don't know if my ability to discern "good" from "bad" has changed, or if my memories of how good it was have been implanted in me by some alien technology, such that their chocolates were simply never that good to begin with. All I know is, despite my apologetics to the contrary, they taste like garbage now. Waxy milk chocolate is nasty. My appreciation for their candy will have to remain what it is: a distant memory. I believe you can order online but I highly recommend that you choose them over Sees, which ugh, I know, Sees is delicious. Since the 215 exit off Foothill is closed I've been taking 7th East all the way home each work day, and every time I pass by Cummings Studio Chocolates I've thought, considering my great love of all things chocolate, I should probably check it out. I didn't have super high expectations, and while the type of chocolate they sell is mostly what I imagined, it is a cute shop, and there were a few surprises. It is most definitely on the old-fashioned side. The chocolate itself isn't particularly high quality: not snappy at all, some a bit bloomed, and very soft and melty, although I have to admit the flavor is not bad. When making my selections they asked if I wanted dark or milk chocolate. I was confused because all the chocolates looked like the same color. I honestly had to peer right up next to the case to see that, okay, yes, maybe the ones on the right were a little darker? Regardless, this clearly isn't any fantastic chocolate. Same goes for the fillings: some were most certainly artificially flavored and colored. I was surprised to see they had sugar free and vegan options. That's super cool, and in fact one of the chocolates I requested, a lavender truffle, happened to be vegan. Sadly, I didn't get to try it because the girl assisting me neglected to add it to the bag, even though I very clearly expressed my excitement, and asked for it twice. Another annoyance was that many of the chocolates weren't labeled. What a waste of time to have to ask what each one was! They have some prepackaged chocolates and candies, including gummies and fruity treats, and Marich brand sweets which aren't the greatest, but slightly better chocolate than your average candy bar. I can't quite recall everything that I got, but I do remember triple flavor opera fudge and a strawberry chocolate (those two particularly artificial tasting), some sort of nut nougat (decent), orange peel (decent), raspberry truffle (pretty tasty), and a toffee truffle (the clear winner). Prices are $35/lb for dark chocolate, (I think) $30 for milk, or $33 if you get a mix of both. This is very reasonable for good chocolate, but not for their quality. If you're curious about what that will get you I paid about $9.00 for 7 pieces. They let me choose a free chocolate after I checked out, so that was nice. Not sure if a purchase is required in order to get the free chocolate. If the price was, say, $20 a pound I'd probably give them 4 stars, but as it stands they ask too much for a fairly low quality (though not terrible) product, so they get 3. I'm curious about the vegan chocolate, and I really love lavender so I'd like to try the lavender truffle. I also saw that they have seafoam (one of my favorite treats) on their website. So I might stop by once more to try those sweets, but otherwise there is little reason for me to return. read more

I'm accustomed to high end chocolatiers, and this place caters more to family taste buds than those of chocolate connoisseurs. Nice interior. Good chocolates. What has happened to Cummings? Rum Victoria chocolates have been a traditional and special occasion in my family for 3 generations. Well, all I can say is what a huge disappointment this store has become. Today was the last for me. I called to order Rum Victoria for family out of state. Not only was I told they had none today (seriously how do they have zero of their most famous chocolate at noon on a Saturday), but that they would have none before my flight on Wednesday. Well. I hate to be the sourpuss but maybe this posting will send a little jingle up the line. 1) Almost every variety of chocolate in the case has bloomed. The chocolate is either old or not kept properly. 2) Price for bloomed chocolates is outrageous. Around 10.00 for 6 pieces. If they were amazing...no problem. But...most of them were so old that the flavors had migrated and everything starts taking on a "muddy" flavor. 3) I have worked in a chocolate shop that hand dips everything. I know how time intesive this is, but the turn around simply isn't fast enough for the candy here...and the quality is suffering. 4) Staff is sweet, but seems a little unprofessional and slightly frantic. Plus the new digital register asks you to add a tip. This is so awkward. So awkward. 5) I won't really get into the chocolates on a one by one basis...but there are lots of artificial colors, flavors and corn syrup. Tragic. I have bought 3 rounds of boxes hoping each time it would be better, but it just seems to be getting worse. Not world class in any way. 6) ATTENTION: A pursuit of excellence requires very focused attention to detail. Attention to detail is the key to the longevity of a business. Very high level of service and knowledgeable, friendly staff. The selection is extensive from chocolates to brittles, nuts, candies, pre-boxed options and even jams and jellies. They are happy to ship for you, and the shipments are treated against high temps. Prices are high, but within reason given the quality of their product. Ones of the bags of toffee I brought home split apart when I tried to remove the price sticker. Some the bags seem to be weak on the bottom where paper is glued to plastic. My family has been ordering chocolates for 75 years. My grandparents, my parents and siblings have ordered Cummings every Christmas. My family lives in SLC but I now live in the East, and have them shipped every Christmas. They are expensive and to ship the chocolates is double the price but always ( or was) worth it. As they continued to get more expensive and smaller, I still ordered Chocolates every Christmas. It was always a Christmas tradition. I stick with the Victorian Rums, Mint and Black Walnut. Last year I received all lime and strawberry or cherry ( not sure what they were). Very disappointing. I attempted several times to contact the manager, customer service, anyone that would make this wrong , right, but to no avail. I have officially cut ties with Cummings Chocolates. I feel bad as I know the Cummings ( I believe Victor) that started this family business over 100 years ago would be very disappointed to see how the business is operating today. Spent $10 on a chocolate egg for my niece for Easter and it didn't look great so I asked them to fix and they said no. Not going back.

Just simply wasn't worth the price. Customer service was a little off. I paid $10.00 for just a few small pieces of chocolate. I guess certain things in the display case were mislabeled, because when I got home and looked in the bag there were different chocolates than I thought I selected. Furthermore - all the pieces of chocolate were just loose in the bag. For the price, I thought maybe the presentation would of been a bit better instead of loose chocolates in a white paper lunch bag with no labels. I hate to share this review but I would also want to know if I was considering this place. This is the second review of chocolate gone bad I've seen. We got a box of chocolates from Cummings and as we were eating it my wife got one with green mold inside. I've attached pictures as I have never actually seen chocolate with mold like that before and was shocked. I don't know how Cummings can make this right as I will never take another bite of their chocolate. I hope they can figure out how to fix it or this business will not last. read more
