Upon landing in Utah (literally, I came directly from the airport), I visited Mrs. Cavanaugh's Chocolate Factory. It's super fun and educational, and only $5! As part of the tour, you also receive a $4 voucher to buy anything after the tour. So it only ends up really costing $1! The tour lasts between 30 minutes - 1 hour and includes chocolate and ice cream samplings. We started with an educational video detailing bean to bar, and then looked into the factory, watching the chocolate making process. My favorite part of the tour was watching the hand-dipping process, which is a traditional method. I sampled a raspberry creme truffle, raw chocolate, milk chocolate, and the Mandy mint ice cream. After the tour, I purchased a Turtle Easter egg (3 oz, $6.99) for my grandfather and was even able to get it personalized on the spot for free. I also purchased some peanut clusters with funky faces (price by weight, cost roughly $0.90 each) There's a cool kids world section where lots of small bags of candies are only $1 each. Their prices are very reasonable for both chocolates and ice cream scoops. I called ahead one day in advance to RSVP for a tour. Since it was just me, I was able to get scheduled in easily. But if you are scheduling a larger group, I'd recommend calling in earlier than that. There is a ton of free parking available. If you need to wait around too, there is a table, chairs, and even 2 sofas to wait on. All the staff are so kind and informative. Lovely first stop in Utah!

Took my kids and the neighbor kids on a tour that they offer here at the chocolate factory. You have to call to schedule it. It is five dollars per person but then you get four dollars of product in their shop which includes tons of candy, chocolate and ice cream! The place seemed very clean. The tour was probably 35 to 40 minutes and interesting. She also let us sample the ice cream and some chocolate.

Funny story: Years ago, when I used to live out East, my mom and sisters picked me up from the airport, and as soon as she saw me, my littlest sister excitedly announced, "WE ARE GOING TO A TACO FACTORY!" ...Odd, but I do like Mexican food, so okay! "A taco factory, huh?" To which my mom interjected, "No, a chocolate factory." Ah, this made much more sense. And, I mean, I love to eat so would have been on board with either, but chocolate is much more my speed! Now, this was years ago, and beyond the memory of learning of our intended visit, I do not recall the experience at all. My tastes have changed much over that time, I can be a snob when it comes to food, and if I am honest, I fully expected to be disappointed by Mrs. Cavanaugh's. I already have several favorite candy sources in SLC, and there are many from which to choose. I figured if Mrs. Cavanugh's was so great, I would have been inclined to visit before now. Instead, I felt like, when deciding to make a stop here, I was scratching the bottom of the barrel in my quest to patronize all area chocolate shops. I arrived mid-day on a Saturday to find it completely empty and dimly lit (so much so that, once greeted by the girl up front, I inquired if they were truly open). This only seemed to confirm my suspicions. The front retail space is almost cavernously large, at least it felt that way with no fellow customers. They have a variety of prepackaged chocolates and candy, caramel apples, etc, even some baking supplies like chocolate chips. There is a "kids section" with small bags of treats for $1.00, and you know parents appreciate the ability to say, "Pick out one thing you want from over there!" They even have frozen custard! I headed straight for the chocolate case, and was happy to see most varieties are available in either milk or dark. I got everything in dark because duh, and selected the following: First off, had to have my fav, Seafoam/Honeycomb/Whatever-you-call-it, but theirs was not nearly as light as it should be, closer to toffee than anything else. It reminded me of See's molasses chips, not what I am looking for with Seafoam. Womp womp. Midnight Mindy Mint-A lovely dark chocolate minty truffle. This was very smoothy smooth and melty. Peanut Butter Truffle-Like a peanut butter cup in square form, so not what I would call a truffle, but the filling was smooth, salty, and not too sugary. Apricot Crème-Though quite sweet, fairly well balanced with actual pieces of tangy apricot. Opera-Basically a neopolitan fondant filling and just okay, Very sugary, strawberry tasted artificial, and chocolate coating is too thick. Brittany-Chewy marshmallow caramel. Must be in dark or it would be too sweet, but this was so delicious it made me angry when it was gone! They offer factory tours, though not on Saturdays, but I am sure it would be fun to check out. I paid $8 for my selections, so prices are reasonable and in line with other area old fashioned style chocolatiers. There is plenty of parking, and the location is off 2-15 near the airport, so if you happen to be in the area, or are perhaps picking up some guests from out of town, follow suit and make a stop on your way home. No one is going to complain about a trip to a chocolate factory, after all!

Cool tour and chocolate factory, the tour is $5/person and lasts about 40 minutes, and you get a $4 voucher to spend on their products afterwards. You get to watch a movie about the history of chocolate and the production of chocolate, it's very informative. It's a good tour and factory, only reason I'm giving 4 and not 5 is I'm thrown off by them not wearing gloves while making the chocolate, plus I saw one gal touch her nose and then go back to making the chocolate without changing her 1 gloved hand. Overall, very cool tour and place, definitely go take it to learn more and get behind the scenes :)

We took the tour and loved it. Staff is well informed and friendly. Loved all the samples of chocolates and ice cream so much that we bought some to share with family and friends. .

Had a great time today at Mrs Cavanaugh's!! My daughter and I went to the factory for a tour. Free chocolate and ice cream samples?! Oh yeah! Cost was $5 pp with a $4 coupon to use in the store after. The tour started in the store and progressed upstairs where we watched a short 11 min video on how chocolate started and is made. Since it was Christmas time when we went Mrs Claus led our tour and she was amazing! Lively, funny and engaging! After the movie she handed us 2 pieces of chocolate. One that was unsweetened and the other that was milk. Just so we could taste the difference. After telling us about the real Mrs Cavanaugh and the amazing story of how she started the company Mrs Claus gave us another piece of chocolate. My daughter got raspberry and I got caramel. (We split them with each other so we got to try both) Then we looked out windows down on the production line. Using a laser pointer she told us about each area of the factory and what was happening. We were told about the different designs on the tops of each chocolate and what they mean and about how they get the chocolate on the bottom of the piece of chocolate. After we finished the tour upstairs we were led downstairs to try the ice cream!! My daughter had raspberry cheesecake and I tried penoche. Delicious!! We had to use our $4 coupons so we got a 1lb box that we created ourselves. We also got an almond mound ($23.81 with $8 off) The employee that helped us was super helpful telling us what flavors were good (uh, ALL OF THEM!) and letting us know what was inside. In all we were there about 1 hour. 45 mins for the tour and 15 mins looking around the store and picking out chocolates. The building was easy to find right off I-215. The chocolates we had during the tour and the ones we ate on the way home were all delicious!! I would say the best chocolate I've had in a while!! Visit this location for some delicious chocolate and a visit with Mrs Claus if you hurry!!

A fun photo place for all ages.

Immediately, after walking through the door, I was in a whimsical and special place. There were adorable felted crafts in one of the cases. I have a calico kitty and of course needed one of the calico ones to bring home. Then, I moved on to chocolate. I loved how many gorgeous options they had. The young man who helped select the chocolates for our box was extremely friendly and kind. Everything was festive and the decorations were cheery. There's a craft counter, a chocolate counter, and an ice cream counter, and no clear lines or what not. At first glance, it's not immediately obvious where to focus your attention, so I went with the ice cream for here and took the chocolates walking. The owner was out on the floor chatting with customers, which gave the place a welcoming and local feel. It was nice. A few times I hovered close to him and tried to find an opening to ask him some questions about the products, but he was busy with other guests. As for the history of the business, there are enough newspaper clippings and articles on the walls to keep anyone occupied while waiting. Most of the staff appeared to be high school- or younger college-aged employees handling the day-to-day operations. The ice cream isn't made in-house (it's Farr's brand), so this review is more about the experience than the product itself. The serving size was fair, and I opted for the spumoni. Yes, really, spumoni. Three other people in our group between their twenties and forties had never even heard of the flavor before. The ice cream is scooped from a mixed single barrel rather than barrel with separated sections, so the chocolate, pistachio, and cherry had blended together. It was kind of like putting different sodas into the same cup. While I enjoy ice cream and these flavors, others might not think the same. The standout items for me were the chocolates. The bourbon chocolate came with a huge flavor punch. It was rich, bold, and intense enough that I needed a break and a glass of water afterward. It's not for the faint of heart and you need to be serious about chocolates to have an appreciation for this one. The marzipan, on the other hand, was a perfect follow-up. Not to sweet, balanced, and a very nice almond flavor. It was delicious and served as a nice palate refresher after the bourbon's performance. Between the chocolates and the owner's visible presence this was an enjoyable stop. The chocolates were easily the stars of the visit and worth it if you're in the area.
