I wasn't expecting it, but inside the flaky croissant, there was an abundance of sweet, nutty cream that was really great at breaking up the mouthfuls of pastry. While ordering the food I thought the cashier was kind a snooty and curt but later realized that's just her personality. Came here since it was nearby my hotel and I wanted to try some local brunch places while in the area. This place came up while doing a Google search, so I checked the reviews and was convinced enough to give this place a try. I'm so glad I did - I ended up coming here three times in total while in the Evanston area! It's important for me to mention though that this place is EXCEPTIONALLY busy, especially on weekends. That being said, this may not be the best place to get work done due to how noisy it can get in here. Also, you will need to plan on spending quite some time in line to order what you'd like. Fear not though, the lineup is absolutely worth it. Anything you get here is delicious. The interior is also very sleek, modern and clean, providing a welcoming atmosphere to customers. Service is also very friendly and the food always comes out fast even when busy. The way how this place works is that you line up to order what you would like, and then you are assigned a table number to go to to take a seat at. Your food will then be delivered to you when it's ready. In terms of what I ordered, I got a Midwestern Omelette, and wow, it was so filling and delicious. A wonderful brunch if you ask me! And it was fairly priced too, a major W if you ask me, considering inflation. Pretty simple yet somehow not so intuitive for such a nice restaurant. I have eaten here twice now both times for Sunday brunch. I can attest that Bloody Marys here are delicious they are made with grey goose and homemade secret mix. What I want to rave about is their gravlax and eggs, which is house cured salmon, scrambled egg and sliced tomato. Capitol has great food and is a wonderful spot to do some work! My main issue is that it can get very crowded and they, for a while, didn't allow students to work much in the space. Which makes sense but there should be options for both working and just enjoying a meal. Cupitol has been our favourite breakfast and brunch place for at least 5 years. Needless to say we didn't visit during the pandemic. Upon my return today I was not a little horrified - our standard breakfast order took the meaning of highway robbery to a whole other level. I was sold two kids' hot chocolates as being 8 oz each - one was in a tiny cup that could barely hold 4oz of liquid and was half full of whipped cream anyway. The other was mercifully in a to-go cup so they couldn't mess with it much. I also got two simple waffles with berries - both were soft and spongy and lacking in flavour. Finally, our family favourite - the shroomed omelette has shrunk so drastically to one third of its original size that I could not help but exclaim out loud to my server. It was the size of the piece of sourdough bread they put beside it (though plumper of course). I asked how many eggs they'd used and the server said 2. He said, "this is how they come now". My two boys and I would easily be able to share the omelette in days gone by, but today it was barely enough for 1.5 portions. Shrinkflation leading to questionable standards... For this order, that is, 2 kids hot chocolates, 2 waffles, and 1 mushroom omelette, I paid: $50 plus a tip. Needless to say, I'm shook. Went with my family on a Sunday at noon. We had never been but had chosen the spot because one of us is GF and seeing GF pancakes and waffles on the menu sold us. We all really enjoyed our food. Doesn't bother us but might bother some. We didn't know the system- you wait in line to order at the counter, then they ask your table number?? Why would I have that if I haven't sat down yet? So we saw a table open up from across the room and pointed to it. Our food arrived quickly and the presentation was great. However all of our drinks hadn't arrived. We ask only to find out it was our responsibility to pick them up from the counter, so my latte had been sitting for about 10 mins- booo! The only thing that was weird was the pace that the bussers were working was beyond excessive. They were constantly dropping things all over and then leaving them. Not stopping to pick up forks or knives that people could slip on. It was loud and felt super chaotic. I live in Vegas, so I'm used to restaurant craziness but this was more of a sign of just wanting to get the job over with than actually caring about clearing the area for customers. I'm only giving it 2 stars because it used to be the best option around me for quick/cheap/good food but the last 4-5 times I've ordered it continues to get worse and worse. -The staff doesn't know how to cook eggs it's always way over done or not done enough. This last time it was to point of total embarrassment I ordered the biscuits and gravy and2 hard boiled eggs the hard boiled eggs came out well undercooked runny still and then the biscuits and gravy is poached eggs but that came out soft boiled. How the fuck does that happen - food used to always be done in 10 minutes when it said 10 minutes. This last time it said 15 minutes I got there 30 minutes later after ordered as was held up in meetings and it still wasn't ready.
