The perils of hairstyling are many- one bad cut and you end up with an unfortunate nickname for the rest of your life. Luckily since I've been going here I haven't had to endure that experience. This shop has two parts: a room in front and a room in back, each with their own set of stylists. No matter which side you go to though, you will have to deal with stairs. So if for some reason you hate walking, or you aren't physically able you might want to go somewhere flat or with elevators. Mainly I go to Karen in the back of the shop. She is bright, bubbly, accomodating, and a whiz with hair. She's great with color and always listens to what you have in mind for your style, offering her expertise as to what will work and what won't along the way. The one and only time I was in the front was to get my hair straightened. The stylist was ok, but I wasn't really happy with the results. So my advice, stick with Karen at the back of the shop and banish those awkward nicknames forever. read more

Here's a dirty little secret- Rhonda also does a fantastic job with men's hair as well. I've been going to her for a few years now and (while I'm usually a few months past due) I always have a great experience. She'll listen to your needs while giving great advice on the cut.. as well as local restaurants and craft beer selections. She always schedules her time appropriately and makes you feel at home (note the periodicals on the table.. personally I think she reads more of the biz and econ mags than the pop culture stuff, sorry ladies). You'll leave with confidence, have a good time and make a new friend who will treat you right in the years ahead. I contacted Taryn about bridal services because of all the wonderful reviews about her. She got back to me right away and was incredibly reasonable for doing trial runs. I had no idea how I wanted to wear my hair for my wedding, so I brought her some pictures along with a picture of the dress, and we tried out different things. She was incredible! I liked her before I even met her because of her honesty. She told me flat-out that she didn't think up-do's were her best work, and that her specialty was more with color. In my opinion, she's underestimating herself because I loved each hairstyle she did, and she showed me pictures of other bridal styles she had done before, and they all looked beautiful. She is very personable and seems to be a perfectionist, both great attributes for a hair stylist. Her shop is very inviting, and I will be returning to try out her other services. read more

I went there several years ago and had the worst experience ever. After that, I swore i would never go back. The owner at the time, a tall dark-haired woman, had done my hair a couple of times. She used to make me hold the foils and hand them to her one by one as she worked. I didn't think too much about that at the time because I had never had a highlight before. Since then, I know better. Other salons do not make the customer do the work. The real kicker was my last viist. She put the foils in my hair as usual, left me under the heat lamp like forever. Then she had the nerve to chide me for not telling her it was time to rinse out my hair. HELLO, she is the hairdresser and she would have been aware. She kept walking past me, so she was aware of what was going on. I felt that was a slap in the face. My hair was a burned out mess after that. SHAME on her. read more

Finally! A hair dresser in the South Bay who knows how to color and cut. Finding a good haridresser who can do both is very difficult. For 16 years I've been experimenting with various hair salons in the Redondo Beach Riviera/ Village area and the South Bay. Being from Los Angeles originally, I was tired of traversing through traffic to go to the hairdressers I used to go to. They have all relocated or always have some sort of crazy drama going on. Here in the South Bay, there are some decent hairdressers, but not one has proved to me the way Rhonda did that they have the ability to cut or color my hair the way I like it. I either had over bleached hair, too gold or very yellow. Rhonda even mentioned that who ever was doing my hair had no clue how to work with color. Rhonda is very friendly and super sweet. She cares about her customers and she will do whatever it takes for you to have good hair days. She looked at my hair on my first visit and just knew what I wanted and needed. Like a hair doctor she gave me a prescription. She put me on a regimen and here I am a month or so later completely satisfied. I finally found a salon close to home with a hairdresser I completely trust. Some of you may be into the fancy looking salons, but this salon is very Redondo Beach a decade or so ago. I love it. I love that I can get highlights, sit on her balcony, look at the ocean and not be seen by any passers by except seagulls and hummingbirds. If you can get past that "high end" salon look, you will leave with a high end just stepped out a great hair salon hairdo at reasonable prices. I love the products she uses and encourage everyone to try out Curl Up & Dye. At least now I know I won't be in the hands of hairdressers that I'm risking time and money with. I've been going to Taryn for almost a year now. She is the only one I trust to cut my hair and I won't go to anyone else! She's a busy girl, but she does a really good job fitting you in as soon as possible. She's very good at what she does and will not let you leave the salon unless your hair is looking absolutely perfect! I've been to other places before where you tell them what you want, but end up with something totally different. Taryn listens to you and gives you exactly what you want. I am a former Southern Orange County resident who has always taken very good care of my hair. Consequently, it was not unusual for me to receive daily compliments on my hair which I appreciated but took for granted. When business required me to move to the South Bay, I continued my trek to Laguna because of the quality results. Then, my stylist retired, and I was forced to search for a South Bay replacement. Shortly after going to a Riviera Village stylist I noticed the compliments stopped. I was on my second salon when old friends pulled me aside and asked why my hair had become so brassy. They also commented on the severe breakage which was highly unusual for my mid-length hair (it was the color and quality which people had considered stunning in the past). I started to think that these symptoms were age related and that perhaps my once beautiful hair was becoming just a memory. Luck brought me to Rhonda and Curl Up & Dye in 2007. WOW! Positive results almost immediately!!! Within 3 months the compliments (which I no longer take for granted) were back!!! When I sat in her chair for the first time she did give me that sad look and was definitely not happy with the shape/condition of my hair. I have always done highlights with the terrible "B" word. It took awhile but, not only did Rhonda give me beautiful natural looking highlights with just color, my hair is the longest and healthiest it has ever been!!! She is amazing!!!!! After searching for a new stylist, I found Taryn about a year ago, who is a total gem! I went to Taryn today, and my hair looks fantastic..the long layers and highlights are perfect. She's the only one who has been able to add natural blond highlights without all the brassy tints. The bonus is that her prices are reasonable and she is adorable. It's also fun that the salon is right on Catalina, so it's right next to the ocean and a great place to meet girlfriends for lunch at the Riviera Bar and Grill or Creme de la Crepe after getting my hair done.
