I've stayed here twice in my entire life - and while I was too young to remember the first time, I do remember this last time! First off, how cool is it this place is made from a frickin' redwood tree!? Second, the man who checked me in was quite nice and kind - my room was next door to a room that was getting updated, and the next morning, when I was packing up the car, he checked on me to make sure the workers hadn't woken me up (they hadn't!) Third, the rooms are both funky and yet updated. By funky I mean, a vibe that only the Curly Redwood Lodge could ever have - it personally reminded me of my favorite movie that takes place in a motel - just without the creepiness - and that motel was funky! But unlike that motel, this place was also nice. The bathroom in the room I was in had been remodeled and damn, it was nice! I'd recommend anyone to stay here! I wanna stay there again! The rooms are made from redwood. The entire motel is, too. The history of the place is fascinating. The staff were super friendly. The bad... The beds are hard. And lumpy, but maybe that was just the springs. The sheets are rough. Not sure they have ever seen softener. The pillows are so flat as to be nearly nonexistent. Staff is nice, check in/out was easy. The price here is unbeatable! The rooms themselves are very vintage and it feels like you're transported back to the 70s. If you just need a place to stay without many amenities, this is a great option. It's a very historic facility as well... made from a redwood tree (?) This lodge is not on the ocean side, but I walked to the harbor easily in less than half a mile so you can still easily access the beach. If you're looking for something a bit more upscale with a gym, pool, etc, this isn't the place for you. read more

We made a mistake and booked the day after we meant to book and did so through a third party site the hotel staff were very understanding and even handled the refund with the third party and booked us their last available room. Many large chain hotels would not have been accommodating. It was a unique retro hotel with some cool history and very well maintained and cared for. read more

This motel was built out of a single redwood tree. Amazing! Must've been a huge tree. The man in the office was very nice and helpful. We had room 18 which was really big with 2 queen beds. Two wooden chairs with comfy cushions and a table. The flat screen tv was on the small side, but you could move one of the chairs up close to see it better. Microwave and fridge were aqua, a nice touch. Decent counter space in the bathroom which had a beautiful copper colored glass sink that sat atop the counter. I gave the hotel a chance but it proved to be overpriced for what it was. I thought it might be retro and cool but proved to be just outdated and not very comfortable. To add insult to injury, I left my glasses there, my fault. But on several calls and several unreturned emails, I never got a straight answer on if they even found them. Why still do disposable, non-biodegradable? Please, please, please, for the future of the beautiful planet and the most lovely and unique redwoods, stop with the keurig-style coffee makers. I've been staying at the Curly Redwood lodge for about 10 years. Every time I visit Crescent City, this is where I stay, and I tell all my friends about it. It has exactly what I look for in a place, lots of character, while being clean and comfortable. Therefore, it saddens me to have to share this. The last time we stayed here, it started out well enough. The person at the desk was kind and courteous. I really liked him. We settled in and had an enjoyable evening. At some point, my partner noticed that the sheets had come untucked from the mattress. She proceeded to tuck them in, and accidentally spilled her red wine. She tried to clean it up as best she could. The next morning, we left the room cleaning sign out and went about our day. When we got back that evening, there was a fan blowing air on the carpet to dry it. The carpet had been cleaned and the sheets and matress protector on the bed had been replaced. The bathroom had been shodilly cleaned and nothing replaced though. About an hour later, there was a knock on the door. My partner answered it and the same man who had checked me in the night before proceeded to harangue her for a solid 10 minutes about how horrible she was for spilling wine and ruining his day. She apologized multiple times and took full responsibility, but that did not assuage his anger. He just kept going on and on. He treated her like she had thrown some kind of raucous party, rather than someone who had made a simple mistake. My partner has been staying in hotels for over 30 years, and this was the first time she had spilled anything besides water. We were charged an extra $200 cleaning fee, which I understand. We have no problem paying for our mistakes. We do however, have a major problem being treated like we intentionally trashed a room when a cup of wine was innocently spilled. I spent the better part of a decade in the service industry. I never once was rude to a customer, no matter how rude they were to me. I simply cannot conceive of someone in the hospitality industry being rude over a simple mistake, much less delivering a 10 minute diatribe about it, to a customer. What I would have expected from someone who is a professional, would have been a a simple statement of what he had had to do, and that we would be charged for it. That statement should have been delivered with courtesy and an understanding that everyone makes mistakes. read more

Want to warn others, that yes, reviews look fine, so I booked. But I had to attend a funeral and had to cancel my reservation. Tried through email, got no response, so I called 2 days later and they said it was canceled, but later I noticed they still charged me. Called to ask about this, they told me they'd call me back. Never did. Called again two days later, same thing-- they told me they'd call me back and never did. They were polite over the phone, but they seem a bit disorganized and avoidant. Finally had to dispute the charge with my credit card because I'm tired of calling and being told to wait for a phone call from them that never comes. If they're fumbling over something as basic as a cancelation, it doesn't give me the confidence that they would suddenly be stellar in other ways. In the future, I will give my business to a place that has more reliable customer service. read more

My mom and I stayed in an accessible two bed room. The room was quiet and the beds were comfortable. The only downside is no breakfast offered but there plenty of choices in town. The lodge is centrally located to anywhere you would want to see in Crescent city. read more

I'd like to give it 5 stars but it was lacking in some key areas. Pros: super fast check in and check out, very clean and well kept rooms, close to downtown and the beach. The whole hotel and furnishings were made out of 1 Redwood tree. Cons: no amenities in the room (fridge, microwave, etc) no hotel amenities (pool, etc) old school 90s tv, very short shower and super small tub, squeaky bed, the clock was set to the wrong time. Now don't get me wrong, I would stay here again. This is where you stay when you want to remember what it was like to live in simpler times. read more

Chose to stay here for the price. Should've paid a little more and stayed elsewhere nearby. The hotel was clean, but room layout was totally dysfunctional. No towel hooks or rods to hang damp towels after shower. Vessel sink is pretty, but consumes most of the vanity top. No blower, coffee pot (a tiny single cup thing), TV was way to the left of the beds, chairs ands table blocked access to one side of the bed. Beds were doubles not queens so husband and I slept separate the second night, a single, super tiny "night stand" table between the beds could barely accommodate a single CPAP machine (we both have one). The rooms are spacious, but are not laid out functionally. Mini fridge and microwave should be where the TV is, a regular auto-shut off coffee pot should be provided on that "desk area." TV should be mounted in the wall across from the beds. A regular bathroom vanity/sink would provide more counter space. A shower head with detachable head & hose would be more efficient than the unmovable shower head located almost 7' from the floor, which makes rinsing difficult at best! Would not stay here again. Pillows were also awful! The employees were great and helpful, but the hotel itself needs some help. read more

Pretty cool place to stay- the lodge is built of redwoods & shots across the street from the pacific ocean! My stop so I could explore the redwoods was more than expected. I booked online & check in was easy- ring the doorbell & you grab your key at the window. I got a suite- main room had 2 bed & a separate room had my bed, plus the bathroom. There was cigarette ash on my made up bed- but i couldn't smell smoke. Gross, but good there was no smell. The bathroom could've used more scrubbing in the shower- but I'm fussy about that. Otherwise- it was a good stay. The boys said their beds we're comfy. I was cold all night- the main room was comfortable, but my room ran cold. Water was hot. Location was fabulous. I initially booked on hotels.com. According to the hotels.com website, this establishment is open until 11pm. That is a mistake on the hotels.com website. Last check-in is actually 10. The lovely Indian couple that own the motel were kind enough to allow my check-in at a late hour. They were prompt helpful and professional. I cannot thank them enough! They even warned me about the potentially dangerous night driving conditions in the local area. Lastly, they saw I was tired, and gave me a room on the ground floor! Fantastic stay - very clean and comfortable! This hotel is a living mid century museum that has Original door hardware and furnishings from an era long gone. Besides the obvious and rare curly redwood found throughout the hotel, the real charm is found in the vintage details unattainable by new hotels. Brass hinges and doorknobs and door sights ...because they are very close to the ocean, are well built and preserved and still very operational. Vintage tile work and bullnose and shower hardware not seen in fifty years is found here in each shower - clean and well working! Same w the counter tips and curtains and lighting and furniture and - it's a MCM Minimalist fan's dream come alive. I never thought I'd see an actual (non reproduction) display of MCM minimalist decor and design in a everyday-to-day business operation. This place is a JEWEL! I could go on and on. I have taken so many pics of detailed artifacts in our room to include the vintage metal tongue-and-hook coat hangers in the closet, which are mechanical masterpieces and still functioning and should be display pieces of mid century American craftsmanship. I dearly hope the owner continues to preserve this relic of a hotel. Maybe he'd even consider removing flatscreen TVs and other evidence of modern tech in a couple of the rooms to provide a true MCM feel for this of us who'd even pay extra for it! Chose this motel after reading multiple reviews online. We typically stay at a Hampton Inn or Residence Inn for reference. The room was clean and spacious. We were only staying one night so we decided we could handle a queen sized bed, typically we always book a king. The decor was retro and very comfortable. We were in room 2 which is very close to the highway. We did notice the road noise, but after an active day it did not keep us awake. We would definitely stay here again. read more

Neat experience for anyone looking to visit! Frequent spot for car collectors and enthusiasts. Said to have been build from a single redwood - amazing! The bed left me darn near crippled. Felt like an inflatable mattress under a mattress topper. That's not an exaggeration. The bed felt like a mattress with air in it underneath a layer of foam. Everything else was excellent. Horrible experience. Dirty rooms, loud noises from street traffic, banging and crying from the room next door. The refrigerator didn't work, some of the lightbulbs were out, and mold in the shower. The sheets and towels were old and hard, and the beds had springs poking through. The shower lip was too high for my short mother to get in so she couldn't shower. The Curley Redwood Lodge is your basic hotel TV, beds, small fridge, microwave, shower. Nothing super fancy, the beds were fine. Our heaters work they were small old style heaters. Customer service is very straightforward. However I do have to complement the staff for providing extra blankets with no problem, and when I left my diamond earrings in the hotel room they gladly got them and I sent them a pre-paid envelope to return and I got my earrings within a few weeks. I know other reviews say there's no where to eat or just one place. However, that was not the case there were tons of places close by within 5 to 8 miles driving distance some fast food, just a few nice indoor restaurants. Depending on the fog you can hear the fog horn throughout the night. That was only one night for us. Location is good to some hiking trails. read more

Hey! Look at this ENORMOUS REDWOOD TREE! It looks like it once had some lightening or drought damage -- the wood is funny! I have an idea - let's cut it down, take some pictures and turn it into some buildings! We'll be helping it out - it's probably suffering anyway (even though it's 200 years old!) Who thinks that? Right? Apparently - someone did! Curly Redwood Lodge is quite a throwback - the story of the origin of the wood for the lodge is documented in the front office under the glass of the check in counter with photos, postcards and articles. There are some pieces of furniture that have the signature "curly" grain on display -- and the rooms are all paneled in gorgeous redwood. The rooms all have parking right in front and a nice overhang to protect you from the rain as you go out to your car/motorcycle. The room I had was pretty simple -- comfortable bed, clean shower (no tub) and small writing desk. The tv was kind of tiny and not so easy to watch from bed -- but all in all, it was a comfortable place to spend the night. I plan to return here on future trips on the coast. read more

Terrible experience. Terrible customer service--really, possibly the worst I've ever had. The woman behind the desk lied to me at least once, and then again when I called two days later. I made the reservation on Priceline but canceled within minutes, as I had an encounter with the employee (probably part owner, if I am guessing correctly, but most likely family member of owner, if not). I canceled after the woman asked for my credit card. I told her I paid on Priceline. She told me she didn't have my credit card info from Priceline and there would also be a $300 deposit. I told her no thank you, and I was canceling. I called Priceline to cancel, as well, and they told me I would have to handle that with her, because she would take a cancelation fee. The cancelation fee was the price of the room. I told her I would not be staying, and she did not have the right to take any money from me. She then told me that she actually did have my credit card. When I asked her if she was going to take money from it, she wouldn't answer me. I left and called my bank immediately to dispute. Two days later, sure enough, the price for the room showed up on my debit card statement. I called the motel to speak to a manager or owner, and the same woman answered. She said the owner wasn't there, and I would have to call back tomorrow. I asked for the name of the manager or owner, and she said she didn't know it. This is clearly a lie. I am disputing the charge with my bank, but I really wanted to talk to someone in charge there before writing this review and filing with the BBB, which is what I intend to do next. If you are traveling through this town, best move on to the next one where you can find a reputable hotel with established trust and decent customer service. read more

I was a little annoyed when the concierge refused to show me the room before I purchased a night there, but it was 10 PM and I didn't have many options. The room was clean with big windows a beautiful paneled wall of their namesake curly redwood, and little vintage details like furniture, ceiling lamps and light switches.
