The vegetables tasted fresh and weren't overcooked, and the flavor of the curry was perfect. Kid really enjoyed the butter chicken, although it wasn't my personal favorite. The desserts were fun-sized and reasonably priced, so we ended up trying three! The coconut ice cream with sticky rice was our favorite. The sticky rice with mango was okay, but it would have been much better if the mango had been sweeter. Matcha Crème brulee was yum but a bit too sweet for me :) Overall, we had a enjoyable meal. I really wanted to love this place. The reviews were great, the food photos looked absolutely delicious so we had specifically chosen Curry Journey to eat on our family day trip to Monterey this past weekend. Unfortunately, the experience was incredibly disappointing and left a bad taste in our mouths. After walking around Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row, we made our way to Curry Journey. Walking from Cannery Row isn't too far, but it is uphill, so by the time we arrived around 2:45pm, our family was pretty tired, especially our toddler. We were told they were closing in 15 minutes, at 3pm and would re-open at 4pm. This was very confusing because both Yelp and Curry Journey's own website listed their weekend hours as 12pm-8:30pm. We explained that our toddler was getting extremely fussy and hungry and asked if we could at least order some fried rice to go. The gentleman working there simply said no. If I could give zero stars for the service, I would. It genuinely felt like they did not want our business, which was especially disappointing because we were really looking forward to eating there. At that point, my family was exhausted, so they waited outside while I walked all the way back to the car. I picked them up and got food for our little one before heading back home. And then came the final insult. As we drove past the restaurant around 3:30pm, their neon "OPEN" sign was STILL ON. Seriously? You turn a family away at 2:45pm because you're supposedly closing, refuse to even make a simple takeout order for a hungry toddler and then have your OPEN sign still glowing almost an hour later? This legit qualifies as a pleasant surprise. We arrived late into Monterey, hungry, and stumbled upon Curry Journey walking around the Aquarium Area. While the restaurant was pretty empty, we decided to give it a shot after looking at the menu - and we're glad we did. We sat outside in the wind, as we had our dogs, but the staff did everything they could to help mitigate that wind (thank you Curry Journey team!) What we ordered: 1. Chicken Satay - Nailed it! Nothing out of the ordinary which is exactly what we're looking for. Consistent cook, solid flavor and nice pb + sweet chili sauce 2. Fried Artichoke - A nice nod to the region, not greasy at all, and solid texture 3. Thai Rolls w/ Tofu - Again, nothing out of the ordinary, which again, is exactly what one should be looking for. Fresh ingredients + the wrapper was fresh, had good pull, but wasn't overly chewy. PERFECT 4. Butter Chicken w/ Naan - A bit on the punchy side, but tasty. It'd be great if it had a side salad to add some color and contrast to the curry 5. Massaman Pot Pie - The highlight of the meal, a thai pot pie! Who wouldn't want a rich, flavorful Massaman in a buttery, crisp pot pie?!?!? (with a side of naan). Pricy at $25. but worth the once in a lifetime experience. 6. Panang Curry with Veggies - Nothing out of the ordinary, but exactly what should be expected when ordering a red curry with veggies. Creamy, curry, veggies, with rice? YES 7. Yellow Curry with Veggies - Again, nothing out of the ordinary, but Curry Journey nailed it. We ordered the yellow curry with noodles, which were cooked perfectly. A good bite to them, not gluey/sticky, and not too al dente. If you're looking for guidance for choosing between rice and noodles? They're both excellent, but I'd steer towards the noodles as a bit out of the norm. 8. Khiao-Wan - Steak with green curry was a nice collision of flavors. The steak was slightly over cooked at a medium, but worked well with the green curry. The most impressive part of the meal? Finding out that Curry Journey has been open for only 3 months! We came in literally with 30min before closing . I literally felt so bad but just wanted something that wasn't super expensive or that wasn't seafood or Italian or Mexican food . Jose let us sit at the bar since other option would be to sit outside but it was too cold. When we came in the place was already packed with every seat occupied. Tbh when I saw this driving by I was just wanting something comforting and warm since the weather was super cold already. My husband and I ordered the butter chicken - very tasty, the chicken was so tender and moist, with a side of naan, and the khao soi with medium rare steak - this was the best ever !! Super flavorful , the meat was perfectly cooked and so tender, the broth just rich and delicious like I could have wanted 2 more bowls to take home, and the noodles were very well cooked to perfection and was not mushy in texture. There could never be too many Thai restaurants in the area so I am super excited to welcome this new place to the neighborhood. Curry Journey seems like an authentic Thai establishment - not Americanized and diluted to fit the milder palette - but instead focused on doing things the right way, to achieve the amazing depths of flavor that Thai food is known for. The ambience of this restaurant is relaxed and casual and the service is friendly and authentic. The food comes out, looking almost identical to what you see on the online menu, which is really saying something because the online menu looks extremely appetizing and picture perfect. I decided to try out Curry Journey now that they've been open for a little while, and I'm glad I did. I ordered the Yellow Curry and a Thai Tea to go. The Yellow Curry starts at $11 and comes with rice, with the option to add your choice of protein for an additional charge. I chose to order it without a protein, and it was still very filling. The curry came with plenty of carrots, potatoes, and peas, which gave it that classic homemade feel. The coconut flavor really came through, and the spice level was very mild, which was perfect for me. It's the kind of meal that's especially comforting on a cold day. 5/5 The Thai Tea was $5.50 and a great size. You really can't go wrong with a Thai Tea, and this one was delicious--definitely a 5/5. The service was excellent from start to finish. I was greeted with a warm smile when I walked in, the staff happily answered my questions, and my food was ready in under 10 minutes. The shrimp spring rolls were beautifully presented and incredibly fresh. The peanut sauce was outstanding -- warm, perfectly spiced, and packed with flavor. It truly made the dish! Our main courses also came out in a timely manner, with lovely presentation that made them even more appealing and appetizing!The flavors were superb and absolutely exceeded our expectations. The yellow curry sauce was tasty, but the 4 bites of chicken provided in the dish were not to my liking. There were very few vegetables as well. I had to add my own vegetables to make it a satisfying meal. We ordered a second curry dish with noodles. The chicken thigh is provided with the skin on it. We shared it and it felt like the portion was good enough for two. Next was the butter chicken. This one was my least favorite as it's not similar to Indian style. The meat was not chicken breast instead it was thighs or something similar, just didn't work well in my opinion. The yellow curry was really good, but spicy if you like spice. We also ordered the sticky mango rice. It came with steaming hot sticky rice and mango on top. It looked better on th menu then in real life'. Also wasn't a fan of this one. We got here almost closing time after driving through the coast to explore lovers point, asilomar and such. We felt bad because they were busy and its almost closing time (it was 7:50 and closing was 8:30) It was also 4th of July. Jose greeted us and said it might take longer to sit us down because they have a full house. If we want to eat there, we can sit at the bar or the outside to get us seated right away. We didn't mind the bar seating at all so we did that. Thank you Jose and the other guy for letting us dine in. It was such delicious food we had. I was alone and started with the Tom Yum soup. Without a doubt this was the best I've ever had, BTW, I'm from South Florida, lot of good Thai food around, but the texture of their soup was unique, the freshly chopped ingredients were evident. Next I enjoyed a Thai Ice coffee and then their special Curry Journey which is a mix of Thai, Japanese, and Chinese curry with added veggies and fruits. They recommended added a fried egg which was served over the rice and I chose the pork steak protein. Absolutely fantastic and delicious. We liked this new addition to the burgeoning Thai food scene in Monterey County. The interior design and decor is pretty inviting and relaxing. We had the all veg red curry with brown rice and the ono know suey. The vegetables were really fresh and I loved the rice. Both the curries were quite sweet imo, and we needed to balance it with a fair bit of vinegar. The food was certainly fresh and the service was okay ish.
