Everyone was very warm and understanding. The doctors were very patient and listened. The nurses were the same. I actually had a favorite nurse, Ani. I had to stay for a couple of days so I did see a rotation of staff, Very happy with the way I was treated. Unfortunately after a couple of weeks I had to return for more care. As a patient I wouldn't go anywhere else for my health care. The staffs are friendly, caring and very professional. They do care about the people. I had to cancel two very important meetings to make the 30 min trip up to Brookings or go with the option of waiting a week for the next available appointment, risking the $1200 dollars of work already done on the tooth. I was able to rearrange my schedule. I tried calling back using my phone that the receptionist recognized the phone number and she had immediately put me on hold, twice. After the second hold time, I called back using my work number, and she immediately answered. I do not recommend this dentist at all.

I've been to four other dentists in Brookings, and finally settled on Dr. Chang, since we reached clear and reasonable agreements on the work to be done and the cost. Just a note about local dentistry in Brookings: Unfortunately, dentists in Brookings are mainly non-PPO, so all services for most customers are out-of-pocket. And dental work in Brookings is more expensive than my previous rural doctor. But I found that Dr. Chang offers some discounts for negotiated procedures, and has been willing to work with me on payments. And he is, in essence, an artist. I've been pretty impressed by his work. I have had to be more patient with the time it takes for some procedures, since he is adamant about bone healing and strength. On the other hand, when problems arise, the office responds quickly. I am impressed by his personal phone calls after surgery to check up on patients. He's also rapidly available via email. That was especially helpful when I started developing a minor infection on a weekend. They have a decent website, where I can also contact staff quickly. Dr. Chang is not talkative, and tends to be all business while working. That's okay. I can ask him direct questions and get good answers, and his hygenic staff is interactive and helpful. He is very focused, and is also very attentive to detail. He has up-to-date equipment, and they monitor for health concerns.

I get this new gal, who pushes the pocket measurement tool so far down it was painful and she tried to push periodontal cleaning on me, which would cost an additional $570 and weeks prior to Christmas. I told her maybe next time, so she refuses to give me my scheduled cleaning and somehow convinced the dentist I needed periodontal cleaning, and in a nice way, told me it's either get this expensive cleaning or leave. So, i left. I found another dentist in town, got my pockets measured and everything was fine, back to normal. Got my cleaning with the new dentist/hygienist and will not recommend Dr. Christiansen or his latest hygienist to anyone. My husband and I now go elsewhere. This is a well known scam. Pushes the probe diwn to achieve a higher number for paradentol excuse to charge more. And I was blown away Dr. Christiansen went along with her scam. They have coffee available and tables you can sit at while you're waiting for your child to be attended to, instead of sitting along a line of chairs like you're waiting to be seen in the urgent care. They even have ipads in the waiting room and a fun mirror to keep the little ones occupied. I usually see the degrees of the doctors framed and on display when I first walk into a medical office which isn't the case here. For a second I wondered if this place was legit, until I saw her diploma and awards a little hidden in the room where we had a first consult. I assumed she didn't want to boast about her merits and show off how specialized she is with pediatrics dentistry (I probably would have :p). Dr. Pahls explained in detail what was going on with my little cousin and how she had to fix a dental job that was not done correctly. I informed her of our previous dentist & how I assumed the last dentist was constantly doing quick fixes but we always had problems arise. It was definitely cheaper every time we saw him, but in the long run ended up being more expensive because it wasn't fixing the main issue. As much as I am all about saving money, I understand that I can't compare Dr. Pahl's prices with a general dentist because she is specialized for a reason. Plus, how many dentists do you know who are so open to working with children with special needs. Not only does she accept them, she also has pictures of some of her patients with special needs up on her wall. You can tell everyone at this office works well as a team and I loved the high upbeat energetic feel of the clinic. I don't know why the other yelpers' experiences were different than mine but I'm definitely going to come back to Dr. Pahls in the future.
