First time here. I am gluten free, so they have a gluten free menu to choose from. From the sound of it, they may have separate fryers for food that is GF, because the chips and salas they brought out, they made it clear we're not GF as they are friend in other things, so i'm guessing the food they actually need to make is made somewhere separately. Anyways. They brought out some GF chips. They seemed just from a bag. They were still good. I got the quesabirrias with rice and beans on the sides. The tacos were not crunchy enough for me. they were soggy and fell apart. the meat was tasty but the sauce was underwhelming. The rice and beans were nothing out of the ordinary. It was basic for me. I got an horchata and that was pretty good. The cherry inside was really random lol but it was good. Horchata has many different flavors and I like this particular kind. You may not. My partner got asada plate and that was also okay. For dessert, we got the gluten free flan. it did not taste like flan but it was still a good kind of dessert. my partner doesn't like flan so he actually liked this "flan" since it didn't taste anything like a flan haha The server was also not very nice at first. Like really rude to my questions about the menu. we almost left because she ass very short worded and her facial expressions were not hiding her attitude. she sort of got better throughout our time there but still not the best server experience. I'm originally from Dallas, having moved to Denver 20 years ago. When I heard there was a Mexican food place named after my Texas' state flower, you bet I went to try the place out! What I didn't know was that it's a Denver institution... I have been irregularly a regular at Blue Bonnet for over 20 years now. It's just such a central and great place to meetup with friends for margs and chips. And, for my friends with celiac disease, they've never had a problem with the reliability of the extensive gluten-free menu. Heck, I order off that menu half the time. There's a great happy hour menu! For pricing, otherwise, it's a reasonable expectation for eating out, especially as large as the portions are. The staff is friendly and professional, have always been satisfied with the service, no matter how busy they get... and, they get busy! It's not quite the Tex-Mex I grew up with but, after all these years, it definitely tastes like home! read more

Our waiter took good care of us. He took our order quickly. Our food came out properly. Nathan had a burrito. I had two enchiladas. We like our food a little spicier so we ordered some hot sauce and the waiter brought us three. He brought us a classic Cholula, a garlic, hot sauce, and a raspberry hot sauce all were delightful. The portions are ample. The food is good. The ambience for the holidays is festive and fun. They have plenty of beverages to choose from including craft cocktails for the season. All in all, I really like this place it's a great place to stop anytime you want to take the chill off from a cold day or spend some good time with some good friends. I came on Friday evening at 730pm. Very few diners. I was served by Jackie V. She said it had been slow all day probably due to Denver's first day near 100F. I got their complimentary basket of tortilla chips and salsa. I started with Select Margarita without sweet & sour mix, just Top shelf tequila with Cointreau, lime juice and Agave for $13. I opted for Gazpacho, a chilled soup served in a goblet for only $10. My main course was the Chicken Mole. Two large chicken enchiladas with Cotija cheese with plenty of mole, mexican rice and black beans for $22. I added a side of green chili. A wonderful meal. read more

I have to say we are not fans of Mexican around here as we find it to be greasy slop most of the time. This place is different!! My wife ordered the beef soft tacos and they looked delicious, she said it was the best she has ever had in Colorado. I had the fish tacos and they were amazing as well. We were in a large group so I usually am forgiving of a less than stellar service. I did not need to be nice, one server who did a fantastic job!! First impression very small parking lot! After searching for parking, we finally were able to make it in! Wow it's so nice on the inside! We were promptly seated in patio that was very nicely covered and very cool (in both aspects of the word!) Were promptly greeted by our server and we put our drinks in! Also ordered a queso starter! Chips and salsa were dropped off immediately and shortly after the queso was dropped off! Not what I expected more of a melted cheese compared to an actual queso dip. This was like the kinda cheese that when you dip it pulls with your dip but still very good! Topped with red onions as well! Ordered the kiddie bowl for my son and I got the three items combo plate ! Maybe 5 minutes had passed and our food was here! My son's kiddie bowl was a lot! Wow! He was thrilled! Subbed the beef for chicken with no beans! Mines looked amazing! The taste of his chicken and rice was perfect! Asked for hot sauce and was brought out some garlic habanero! Wow! The carnitas, shredded beef, and ground beef were perfect! First the good. Their service was very good! No long wait time, and the server was attentive and thorough. Even the person bringing our food had a great personality! The spicy margaritas?!? Excellent! Nice spice kick and a good alcohol ratio. Seating was very good. We don't like carpet in restaurants so it fit the bill. The outdoor seating looks like it will be a great spot in the warmer months. Now.. the bad. The food lacked character. The enchiladas had minimal spice at best as well as the burritos. The carnitas, while the meat did have some good crunchy bits, it was a bit dry, and again, could have used more spice! I haven't been here in a couple of years, and decided to recommend it after a show. I hope that this was just an off night as I will be giving them another chance. read more

I'm rounding up to 3 stars because our waiter was nice and the patio is pretty, with flowers and some veggies growing. Nothing was bad, per se, it's just the blandest "Mexican" food I've had in Denver. Not a hint of spice in anything. The chips were sort of overcooked and bland, the salsa was watery, tons of cheese. Taco meat was a dense texture, but moist, but no taco meat flavor. Rellenos maybe use 2 wrappers, so they are very thick, although the chile had a nice fresh, tart flavor. Lots of lettuce and shredded cheese on everything. HUGE guacamole tostada. The coin margarita was nice. It wasn't busy at 5:40 on a Friday night, we just walked right in. read more

Blue Bonnet is a gem. We have been eating here for decades. It seems to have lost its way a while ago in terms of the food quality but it's back on track now. The service is always stellar and the food arrives fast and piping hot! They allow your dog on the patio and provide cool water and cushions for them to rest on. The food and drinks are very very good. We especially love the chile rellenos, shredded beef burritos and tacos, guacamole tostadas, the green chili and red salsa and the flan. The stand out beverage is the cinnamon iced tea - delicious and refreshing! We wish the prices were lower. They have gone up dramatically over the years and seem high for this fare. Overall however, Blue Bonnet is a great option for Mexican food and drinks in Denver. read more

It breaks my heart to write this review as this restaurant has been a staple in Colorado for more years than I can remember. Tonight I ventured out for restaurant week with a girlfriend. I started off with a margarita that was premixed and awful. I attempted to order a second drink in which they didn't have ingredients for. Once my friend arrived we proceeded to order queso & quac. Chips were yummy and hot, but how the heck do you mess up queso? It along with the salsa was awful!. I finally ordered taqutios, that's safe right? Nope, they were originally frozen, the rice & beans that accompanied them were also bad, tasteless and lacked what they called mexican. Had to deal with a phone call that came just prior to the drinks coming to the table. The waiter came to the table dropped the drinks didn't say a thing left. After 10 minutes I tried to get the other waitress to answer if we ordered from her. I raised my had to get her attention while she walked by she glared at me and didn't say anything. Blue Bonnet is the State of Texas flower. It's a large place. I've only scanned the area quickly and it seemed that they have three dining area inside and one covered patio. They have their very own parking lot! I like that. We tried the Carnitas Plate. Delicious! The Chimichanga is not the usual. It says it on the menu. But someone didn't see it. Lol! It's NOT fried! So you see someone was disappointed. But I get it. Why wouldn't you fry a chimi? It's a freaking burrito when it's not fried. Just a more expensive burrito! Some friends and I hosted a celebration gathering after the passing of a dear work colleague here this lasts Thursday afternoon at 2pm, reserving a private room for the occasion. For our purposes, it was just great. The manager Eric was super accommodating, reassuring us we'd have the space to ourselves for as long as needed and they would work with us however convenient with covering costs, either individually or on one card. They had a table set up ahead for display memorabilia, and for the anticipated guests, tables were set up with a reserve table ready for any extras; that worked perfectly for the late arrivals. There were 2 overhead TVs as well, so I was able to run a looping slideshow--with backup help from Eric during a few minor glitches with the connection. Posting the pictures for all to see was very important, so I was extremely appreciative for the tech assistance. Jose was our server, and he was very courteous, efficient and present whenever anyone needed to order or a refill. The room was full, but he managed the group smoothly. We had plates of chips, salsa and guac that covered the basics, and folks were able to order additional food and pay individually. Worked out just fine. One negative about the margaritas was that they were pretty lame, both in strength and taste. The kitchen's music was also pretty loud by the end, and though our room had a door, the server had to come and go so it didn't seem realistic to close it. We were also there for hours, and their music wasn't apparent till much later, probably when the staff was needing to clean up. Overall, the feedback from the group was positive with everyone having a GREAT time, service being excellent, and the location convenient for people coming from all parts of Denver. read more

Last minute dinner last night and what a disappointment. I love a good Mexican restaurant and this one was a bust! I should have known when we pulled into the parking lot and saw the restaurant was not busy for a Saturday night. (literally 8 people there!!!) We were immediately sat and served chips and salsa. The chips tasted old and cold - the salsa was bland! Ordered our margs and food. The cheese dip (vegetarian queso) was the weirdest thing I've ever seen - it was orange and super stringy - it looked like it was cooked in chorizo grease and you couldn't even get it to stay on a chip. Dinner was served shortly after the cheese dip was put on the table and the taste - not even mid! To end the night we saw one of the waitresses packing up the baskets of chips into bins! Maybe this is standard practice but this would explain why the chips were cold and tasted old! Such a disappointment!! read more

We came on a slow day and service left us frustrated and alarmed they were serving $9 bud light. This place has always been on the expensive side but felt worth the price. Food is very bland .service was good. It didn't have any spice to it. We did get in and out quickly.

We've been going here since the 1990's and it's still a family favorite. Great Tex-Mex and the salsa is amazing.
