Would have been great if they'd sell a slice. A solo diner shouldn't be chowing down a 14-inch pie. I almost wandered the place offering a few bucks for other customers' pizza remains. Thought better of it and ordered a Farmers Salad and a Byrnes Brown. Both were roasty, toasty, tasty, and satisfying. That dressing and that beer weren't a great match, but I managed. A few crackers or slice of flatbread would have been nice, but oh well. Seems like a good space with friendly folks. read more

Came for the beer, stayed for the excellent food. We live in the Portland area and had been dying to get in here to try the beer (okay, I had been, and finally dragged my girlfriend along). Maine has no shortage of breweries and it goes without saying that some are better than others, and some are definitely more in touch with current trends than others. I'm happy to say that in my personal opinion, Cushnoc hits the nail on the head on both fronts. The Olde Federal Grisette for instance, is close to something you would taste from Oxbow. Tart, flavorful, but light and somewhere around 4.5%, so very easy to drink and not get totally schnockered. The All Souls IPA is a fruity, tropical IPA, another popular style right now, but theirs is well balanced and not hopped to the point of blowing your face off like some other IPAs (they have some guest taps for that). The Belgian IPA was a wonderful version of the style and I also tried their Purple Rain which was a tripel aged in Gin Barrels with some lavender. That beer was also as described and interesting, you would just have to like those flavors and I was a little on the fence personally. Overall, I was pretty blown away and can't wait to try their future offerings. I'm thinking the more they grow, the more I'll be able to find them in Portland, but will certainly planning some more trips, especially if they start filling growlers or canning. The food was really good too. We had the white bean dip, served with carrots and basically sea-salted strips of their pizza dough and it was great. We had the Mill Park Pie, which did not disappoint. Some of the crust was more than a little blackened/burnt on the top, but we like burnt crust. That's probably hit or miss with wood-fired pies. They have a small alcohol selection and at least a couple of house cocktails, wine, and along with their 5 beers, probably another 5 guest taps with things like Bissell, Goodfire, Unibroue, a really nice line-up. We sat at the bar, but the small section of seating by the windows overlooking the river would be pretty sweet. I wonder if they have any capacity to add some outside seating facing the river, come summer. Our bartender was pretty busy not just tending to bar customers, but making all the other cocktails for the place as well. She didn't necessarily have a lot of time to talk, but was friendly and got all of our substitutions spot on. If I lived even a bit closer, I'd probably be here once a week. As is we'll have to plan our trips and hope more beer reaches Portland, but you Augustians (Augustarians? Augustites?) have a gem here. read more

I'm giving this place my Chicago seal of approval for pizza! Came to Maine for a family vacation and when I heard we were going to have pizza, I had no expectations of the good pizza I know from Chicago. I actually work in the food distribution business and am lucky to have tried sooo many pizzas around the greater Chicago area. But I've NEVER had a wood fired pizza like this! I tried "The Diner Closes at 2am".... Yukon potatoes sliced thin, cheddar, mozz, bacon, eggs, green onions on a smoked ricotta sauce with a maple syrup drizzle... Perfect wood fired crust, held up wonderfully but not overdone. I couldn't believe I was having pizza like this in Maine!! Staff was SUPER nice and helpful with our huge party and questions about the brewery downstairs. If I'm ever back in Augusta, I'm definitely coming here for pizza!! read more

Been here twice before the official opening and once after. I honestly do not have anything bad to say. The home brews are stellar, especially Old Federal and All Souls. The guest taps rotate and are mostly great local brews. The menu suggestions of their pizzas are excellent (The Diner Closes At 2 and Mill Park are awesome!) also have a great list of ingredients to create your own concoction. Definitely not your run of the mill combo of ingredients but so delicious together. The atmosphere and HUGE farmers style communal table is fantastic and gorgeous. I am so happy that beautiful downtown Augusta is finally starting to bloom again and Cushnoc definitely fills a missing niche in the area. I've already highly praised/suggested this establishment to my friends and colleagues and will continue to enthusiastically do so. Top notch beer and pizza. The staff is always helpful and cheery (how do I got a job like that?). Events they have are always a good time. I made it to the playoffs in the Intergalactic Pinewood Derby and had a blast. The place was packed and it was a Monday. It is really great to see the new businesses in the area bringing Historic Downtown back to life. When one place has an event it helps all the places around. The recent hot chocolate event started by Circa 1885 spread to the other businesses. I don't care what anyone says, bacon goes with everything. read more

I really wanted to like Cushnoc Brewing - given their role in the revitalization of Water St.. The menu is limited to pub appetizers, salads and creative pizzas. The very thin crust pizza was excellent - among the best I've ever had - and the craft beer (we tried the porter) was outstanding. The restaurant is housed in an industrial style building with a view of the river from the mezzanine tables. The big spoiler for us was the noise that reached OMG! levels during a sedate Saturday lunch - I can't imagine what the din must be like when the place is really busy. Our party of three had to yell at each other to be heard and we were pleased to be done with our lunch and back to the relative quiet of a motorcycle filled Water St.. This was our second and likely last visit to Cushnoc. Though the food and drink were outstanding, the owners need to install some fabric or acoustic tiles to mitigate the din. It's not a place to go for a peaceful meal, good conversation, or serene dining experience. Maybe the resto will evolve into a take out pizza and six pack place were the ambiance is not relevant and the food is the big draw. read more

The tomato sauce they use already comes with 9 grams of sugar per 1/2 of measuring cup & after they de-can the sauce they add more sugar; expect 15-18 grams of sugar per 1/2 a cup of sauce. read more

Newish place on Water Street. Decor is industrial and sterile. They have large cans of tomatoes on tables. It's a bit strange. The purpose of the cans is that they rest pizzas on them. Pizzas seems to all be a bit on the hipster/trendy side. This is not your normal pizza joint. I had a thai influenced pizza which didn't really work for me. They brew their own beer which is pretty good. I had one that tasted like a pine tree which was a new one. Worth a visit to see whether this is for you. read more

Decent beer and pretty good Covid set up. The pizza was delicious. I'd give it 5 stars however the service down on the lower level was less than desirable. I was the first guest upon opening and the server spent more time talking to me about how I'd have to vacate the table in less than an hour and a half than listening to my questions about the beer. I over heard him with other guests when they arrived talking about they're beer being flat and asking if that's how it's supposed to be. He just was like I'm not sure what to tell you I poured it from the same tap I poured hers from. Additionally I wanted to purchase a beer glass to take home because despite his service it was a nice place with a good view. But he brought be the worst most disgusting glass I thought at first it was still wet as I'd expected he just took it out of the wash to give to me. Nope, just grabbed the worst one they had and sent that home with me. Disappointed in the service from one particular server so I won't hold that against them.
