They have potential, and there is clearly a loyal following of locals. The barkeep and some locals were having a great time visiting, and we found ourselves a seat. We were not sure about the ordering process, and after a few minutes started trying to find the pub website and look for a menu. Eventually a menu was brought to our table, and we put in an order for beer. Turns out, half of the items on the menu were not available. When we did figure out an order, more items were made not available. We settled on a NY style pizza. We did not get the toppings we ordered. Good news: the crust was very good, and worth another try! Even the leftovers were delicious the next day - not all pizza can do that. They do not know how to pour a Guinness - which is too bad, because that is a favorite beer of ours. We switched to another tap and had a local red. The tap selection is decent. The place has a very casual atmosphere, and many locals come and go and seem to have great conversation and know each other's business. Overall, a place with great potential, especially for regulars. Hopefully, another visit will be more successful for exploring the menu which sounds good. read more

Cute place in Richmond. We were staying in the area and tried this place out after arriving. Pizzas were awesome and HUGE. Other members of our party had sandwiches, salads, and one of the quesadillas and were pleased with the offerings. Seemed like a lively joint with a steady crowd throughout the evening. I've not done a yelp review in many years, but felt compelled to put my two cents worth in for this one, Positives: This eatery had a pretty good atmosphere -a fun, little pub. Although we did not order a pizza, the ones that went past our table did look and smell very good. Negatives: 1) the service from BOTH our waitresses bounced back and forth between friendly and snappy/irritable 2) an hour and a half was MUCH too long a wait for 2 quesadillas, a sandwich and a salad, and 3) the food, when it eventually arrived, was just "OK". One of these days, I'm going to order the pizza. It looks delicious. On this particular evening, we were short on time, though, so ordered a panini, steak quesadilla, and nachos. The nachos were great. Loved the fact that they were in a ring instead of a pile. Every chip had salsa on it. The Panini's were good as well, but it took forever for us to get our food. I am updating my reviews to reflect my changing opinion about Old Goat. I still love the food, and if you can get in there and try it, you should. What's new: take out is a no go, frequently, because of a lack of staffing or a shortage of dough. Store hours are new- closed Tuesdays and possibly more in the future- again staffing issues. Their website- absolutely terrible and non-useful- who even updates it or their social media? No clue, but I'll tell you what, whoever owns this place had better get it together and invest into the business and consider paying people more money to work there. My son visited Maine from Hawaii and I could not think of a more authentic place for lunch and a craft beer experience than The Old Goat. The moment we entered we were greeted by the friendly bartender, placed our order and asked for a cribbage board While we enjoyed a fiddlehead beer we enjoyed the sun filled table by the window. Go to the goat! Great food and beer, friendly locals, lovely interior. The paninis are amazing - delicious and made with an abundance of great food. I had the Reubenator and its one of THE best reubens I've ever had. The varieties of beer was vast but not so overwhelm you don't get lost in a mile long beer list, half of which you don't know anyway. Caters to Regulars: Outsiders will be treated as such I really wanted to give this place a better rating but I could not and I will explain. I've been eating here off and on for 11 years. I live in the next town over so this place is fairly close. Today,I was in the mood for pizza and beer so I popped into The Old Goat. I arrived just after lunchtime and saw a smattering of customers, one person at the bar, and two other small parties at a couple random tables. I had my heart set on a Guinness and some pastrami pizza. The service was horrible. In fact, I felt as if the bartender/server was annoyed by me. Upon sitting down she handed me a menu then she hurried off. The "menu" is a collection of four or five loose-leaf pieces of paper stacked up in no apparent order. One page was a listing of paninis, the next appetizers, salads and specials, and the pizza selection. I finally caught the bartender/servers eye and ordered my Guinness then pulled out my laptop to do some work. As my drink order was being processed - an older couple entered the establishment and it was apparent they were regulars. They hadn't even sat down before the bartender/server set about getting their "usuals" and even placed their food order with the cooks before my beer ever hit the table. Minutes later, this happened again when another regular came in and took a stool at the bar. The bartender/server was all over it. She made sure he was taken care of. He was promptly served his drink and greeted warmly which left me sitting alone feeling as if my order had been forgotten. But, I gave the bartender/server the benefit of the doubt. I assumed she was waiting for the Guinness I ordered 10 minutes ago to rest (after all there is a proper and improper way to pour a Guinness). When the bartender/server appeared with my beer I was, not surprisingly, disappointed in the lack of care my Guinness had been shown as she placed it on my table, hurriedly, lazily, last-minute. The Guinness in full separation mode as it had not rested before being topped off. I knew it should have been the first drink pulled long BEFORE two other regulars walked in. And, the fact that it had not been properly poured OR rested tells me the bartender/server either needs training, or simply doesn't care. Old Goat for shame on you! The establishment that prides itself on a wide selection of beer, letting a pint-o-the-black be served like that?!? (it wasn't even a real pint). As I drank my beer, others whom had come in after me had already received their food before I was given the opportunity to place mine. I tried to catch the bartender/servers eye but she was on her phone or chatting with the patrons at the bar. Eventually, I managed to catch her eye and placed my order for a pastrami, roasted red pepper, and kalamata olive pizza. I ordered a second (improperly poured) Guinness. My pizza took a long time to come out. I was disappointed in the quality. The crust was thin (and that's fine) but it was very dry, beyond tough, tasteless, painful in the mouth to chew, and flat out overly cooked to the point I couldn't even cut it with a knife. I resorted to eating just the toppings as the crust was stale as stale could be. That said, the red sauce is seasoned well, tangy and enhanced by the salty pastrami which gets nice and crispy while being cooked. I enjoy the way the warm roasted red-pepper provide a smooth, silky, mellow texture that pairs deliciously with the tangy, firm kalamata olives (this is a flavor combination I invented on my own as I tend to enjoy the saltier flavors to the sweet or savory). The building itself is a neat old place with minimal decor, high ceilings, brick walls all married together to create a pub-like feel. One Yelp Reviewer wrote about the dart board hanging on the walls between the women and men's restroom, this is still (dangerously) the case. The back-end of the establishment, where the food is prepared is cluttered with stacked cases of soda, beers, and other beverages that would normally be out of sight. To me, that is an unsightly mess. Overall, it felt like the owner has let things slide and has become comfortable catering to the "regulars." As a non-regular, I definitely felt like I was annoying the bartender/server. I think the reason The Old Goat has managed to stay in business is due to it's location and being the only pub in the sleepy little town of Richmond, Maine. The quality of the pizza has plummeted. I think the large assortment of beer and regulars is what's keeping the place going. My entire dining experience lasted over two hours from seating to paying the tab. read more

I have lived in Richmond for years and finally tried the Old Goat. The food we had was very good. I had a Chicken Quesadilla which was delicious and my husband had the Royal Hawaiian that was made on large bread that looked homemade. I would have given a higher rating, but we had a similar experience as Desi-Rae - had we been regulars we would have been all set. We seated ourselves, a bartender came with menus, and when we asked for water with lemon the atmosphere changed. She went back to the bar where there were half a dozen customers she obviously knew, and it was quite a while before our order was taken. When taking our order my husband was going to ask for a pear cider, but she left too quickly. It took a while to get her attention to ask for one. Excellent food in a cool setting. We go there every 2 or 3 weeks and everything is always excellent, Shelby usually waits on us and the service is great. I recommend the cubano Tampa style, Shelby (Buffalo) Quesadilla or the nachos. The nachos are done one way very well, don't try and screw it up, they won't let you anyway. These are a lighter app, not your typical bar nachos mounded with pizza cheese, generic salsa and whatever else is in the kitchen that leave you wondering why you bought them. All the food is done extremely well, there is no deep fryer so no you can't get fries with that. You can get a meal and leave feeling full without feeling terrible like you ingested a salt lick that just rolled off a Sysco pallet. This is a pub, it can be loud and if you want water you're getting tap water. If you want soda you're getting a bottle. The owner Scott is friendly but witty and direct, I've read some take that as unfriendly but I think they need thicker skin, unfriendly is not accurate, he's a funny guy. I also saw someone noted the lack of decor, the old goat is in a historic building that used to be an old bank that had been redone into a pub setting, it's cozy and comfortable. This is a great pub, if your high maintenance or can't handle an at times loud bar then maybe it's not for you but you'll be missing out. read more

Awesome pub serving some of the best pizza in the state. True NY style. It smells incredible when you walk in and the pizza that comes out is 100% legit. Servers are friendly as are the bar patrons and the owner. Yeah it's a bar, some colorful characters abound, but what did you expect? The other reviews maybe were looking for a bland chain. This place has character and is making some damn good pizza along the way. I actually left scratching my head that this place isn't much more well known because it has all the trappings of a place that will wind up exploding with hipster foodies looking for incredible pizza. I was at the Old Goat on July 23rd at 3pm. It took so long for the server to take my order. Maybe because she saw my suitcase and that I wasn't a local...not inviting at all. Once she took the beer order she went back to her friends at the bar and waiting another 10 mins to get my beer. Also, I ordered a bruschetta which was delish. Again she took so much time away from the customers as she felt her friends were more important. Despite the poor service, I felt it warranted another trip as I heard the pizza was the best. Came back Friday, July 30th, with friends and thank goodness we had a server with a smile on her face. Service was still slow, and the owner needs to get more help. This place doesn't give you ice...so don't ask. They do however serve chilled glasses and cold beverages. The pizza is great...like really good. Only one size is served: large. The minus point: -1 for the place not being properly ventilated. When they make pizza there should be a built-in fan above the stove. You WILL come out of the pub smelling like pizza: 100% guaranteed! So, I hope you like the smell of pizza :) -0.5 for having the dart board placed right in the middle of the men's and women's bathroom. Most people who are regulars will know Scott and just know him as "well, it's his bar that's who he is," and then they go on living their life and drinking beer.
