Cuz's is an institution in Southwest Virginia. The menu holds a variety of savory morsels that should please any palate. The decor is eclectic and the favorite table is in the old silo. My table had steaks, always a delight to the taste buds, prepared to order. I had the steak and seafood stir fry. Everyone was pleased with the food. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Cuz's, for some reason unbeknownst to me, has been a famous landmark destination for a few decades now. After years of hearing about it, I finally broke down and went there tonight. I'm guessing the novelty of the place - it's barn location and psychedelic livestock theme - is the reason it is mentioned so often around the area because I don't think anything about the food would keep people talking. I ordered the ribs, which were saturated in a vinegar based sauce that was simply too strong. Now, before you quip about sauce preferences, please keep in mind that I am a BBQ lover and I know a good vinegar based sauce when I encounter one...this was not one of those sauces. It was like someone took a can of tomato juice, added a little vinegar and poured it over the ribs. No nuances of sweetness or spice, just tomato juice and vinegar. The slaw that accompanied the ribs was just as offensive, waaay too heavy with the vinegar. As if my plate wasn't bad enough, the crab cakes my mother opted to try were absolutely horrendous. They were chock full of crab meat and had very little filler, which you would normally want in a crab cake. However, the meat was of questionable integrity. After one bite, she pushed the cakes away, so I tried them myself. It's very possible that the meat was spoiled. Neither of us kept the bite in our mouths long enough to know for certain, but they definitely weren't fit to eat either way. The only positive was the complimentary bread they served. It was a nice fresh sourdough that was served piping hot with lots of butter on the side. If it weren't for the bread and the baked potatoes that came with our entrees, we would have refused to pay for anything. The server was nice and removed my mother's crab cakes from our check (I didn't say anything about my ribs because I felt too embarrassed that we already had complained about the crab cakes, and I didn't want them to think that we were just trying to scam a free meal.) All in all, it was definitely a disappointing dinner. After years of hearing about it, as well as passing it on the highway, I had grown anxious to try it. I wish I hadn't bothered. read more

Twice a year we venture down to Bland, Va to do free dental care, it's or tradition to come here for dinner. Always a great time! The BBQ was a North Carolina style, which I didn't realize wasn't sweet like I'm use to, but a very strong vinegar taste. Besides that, everything is amazing such a fun place to visit! read more

An eclectic place to be sure filled with mismatched furniture. Very "out-there" for otherwise conservative and rural Tazewell County. Really funky and wild decor. Service was decent. Dinner started with some dense and tasty hunks of bread that had the faint taste of sourdough. Had the rib appetizer. They were just drowning in the sauce. The sauce was good and the ribs were smoky--more smoky than you generally find in BBQ around Virginia which I liked and meaty. But this was a mess to eat, even moreso than BBQ is. Entree was the smoked prime rib. Not much smoke flavor and the cooking was very uneven. Some parts were a perfect, juicy and buttery medium rare, outsides were so overdone they tasted awful and was so dry and touch, it could have cracked a tooth. The parts that were good, were very good. It's just that not all of it was edible. Served on the bone which is how prime rib should be done. All in all a decent experience. Let me tell you that the food here is so great that I almost died! Here's the story. So it was my best friends birthday party and it was being held at this restaurant, so it was me and 3 other friends: Tom, Sal, and Brian. We were about to order when I was like: "It's all on me guys" then I winked. They all cheered my name while they ordered. Little did they know I just got payed $500 before the party. So they all ordered and I did too. I ordered the biggest damn steak I've ever seen in my life! When we finished eating I was about to pay and the cashier said, "That would be $479" I was shocked. How could 4 people order $479 worth of food in one night?! So I payed and had no more money to pay for rent so I had to live in a box on the side of a road. I should have judged this book from its cover. From the outside it looks rough and gross and disgusting but after eating the food I realized it was so much worse than just rough and gross. Not only did it take over an hour to get my tables food (they forgot half of mine and then brought it out when the meal was basically over) when it actually arrived it was awful. The steamed veggies were not cooked and had no seasoning-- not even salt or pepper. The curry wasn't up to fast food standards and the pulled pork was WAY too expensive for how mediocre it tasted. The staff never refilled my water the entire 2.5 hours I was there and they messed up 3 out of 7 of our orders. To top all of this off, throughout the meal a strange unidentified liquid dripped onto us from the ceiling. I've been in for dinner 3 times...I asked which of the steaks I should order...answer....the Filet....I ordered...the Filet....now let me stop! Ready? ....no joke the Filet had to be 12-14 oz...is that possible...yep! Maybe more...so on three occasions I've had a plate full of beef and a veggie....and I mean a monstrosity cut of beef....soooo, two of the three times the beef was incredible but the third wasn't, hence 4 stars...two 5s and a 3. I really have no idea what I ate as a veggie and I'm sure they have desserts....but....I couldn't finish the cow! But I did wash it down w/ a Cabernet! They are not open in the winter! This place is a gem! I'm originally from Richlands and have lived all over and have to say my old hometown is lucky to have Cuz's. The food is great. This used to be a barn, but the barn burnt down and now you have a larger place to get huge cuts of meat! As good as the menu is I always find myself getting the prime rib. I went with my family, and we had a salmon, Thai Curry seafood (Damn it was good), a ribeye, catfish and my prime rib. The meal was great, and we all left full and happy. 4.5 stars. Finding Cuz's is like finding an oasis in Pounding Mill/ Richlands area. Unless you fanatically love McDonald's, it's rough finding a decent dining opportunity here. Friendly Holiday Inn (the only place you should stay in Richlands unless you are going to stay with Cuz's) staff pointed us to Cuz's and that's where we ended up spending all of our precious government per diem money for dinners. We had ostrich burger specials, thai seafood curry & bbq beef. Ostrich burger special was memorable, but seafood curry & bbq beef didn't ring anyone's dining bells or whistles during / after dinner. Like everyone here have already said, deco and atmosphere is definitely fun and colorful. This is not what you would've expected in SW Virginia and great fun can be had taking a quick stroll around the restaurant and surrounding cabins. Fun ambience to be sure. But my general impression is you pay for ambience, not food quality. Our waitress actually said to my husband that she recommended he order something other than what he first stated because "most people dont like the sauce." She brought him a sample; meat, covered in overpowering sauce. He ordered pulled pork instead and was satisfied. I wish they had a kids menu. My daughter didn't care for the $10 pizza. Ok... So my husband and I have dined here many many times and I guess I should have known better than to try the seared ahi tuna.... The atmosphere is fun and eclectic, the appetizers are great, the steaks are great, the tuna Is NOT. After receiving one plate of barely heated tuna, with a few steamed carrots and broccoli in the middle, and NO wasabi, I told the waitress that was not what I ordered. In my book seared tuna is just that... Nicely seasoned and crusted on the outside with a cool red center... This was FAR from that .... Yuk... The waitress was extremely nice and offered to turn it into some type of stir fry dish :/ Again, NO. I ordered ahi tuna and that was what I wanted.... So she took the plate and promised me seared ahi tuna.... When it arrived again, although a bit better than the first plate, it was nowhere near definition of seared tuna .... Oh well... I gave up... After having to ask for wasabi again, as it was not plated with, I concluded that this must be a dish on the menu not ordered very often... SO... Worst meal I've ever had. I asked about the Hong Kong Seafood Basket before I ordered it and was told it was "Grilled shrimp, scallops, crab, and lobster served with different dipping sauces.". NEVER WAS I TOLD it was a STIR FRY with mixed vegetables or dripping in a stir fry sauce. Tasted horrible. Tried to send it back and was going to order something different but was met with the comment "there is a difference in it not being prepared correctly and me just not liking it" and I explained that I even asked what it was before I ordered it and it was not what was described to me. Basically, I was met with a tough luck attitude until I said I was going to post this on Facebook. Then they started out with offering me half off the price, for an entree that I MAYBE had 3 bites of. Ridiculous CUSTOMER SERVICE! And one other suggestion, if you aren't going to add a description of the entree on the menu, make sure the server describes it properly when asked to prevent this scenario again. This is my favorite restaurant...and I am in no way trying to be dramatic. I've eaten at a lot of places in my day and I've not found food that compares. The atmosphere can be described as eclectic, redneck/asian bbq/whatever else. The menu features anything from Oyster K Bobs (my death row food) to Thai seafood curry, to steaks bigger than footballs. All served in a room thats looks rival the general "creep" factor of most modern horror films...weird paintings on the wall and action figures hanging around. I grew up about an hour from Cuz's and I feel like as a kid we made a trip there weekly...as did most of Grundy. It was NOT uncommon to find license plates on cars from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, etc...mind you these states don't border Southwest Virginia so thats gotta tell ya the food is legit. My only quarrel is that they aren't open all year...they close from mid november to sometime in the spring...i'm not 100% as to why...but it just does and we've all learned to accept it. So yeah...the food is great...prices are a little high but you get enough food to eat on for three days...and the experience is awesome. If you haven't gone....GO!!! If its too far...cowboy up and Go anyway...they have cabins to stay in! read more

We have been hearing for years how awesome this restaurant was. We finally got the chance to try it out. NOT impressed!! Not cozy, felt like we were in the twilight zone. Very strange decorations. As for the food... I got the mac and cheese with lobster. Absolutely horrible!!! The lobster was decent, but it was a small portion and was very milky with NO flavor! Staff seemed like they could care less if we liked our food. All in all...will not go back and would not recommend this place to anyone. Do not know what the hype is all about. Aweful. I've never been so insulted at a restraunt. There is no sign outside referring to dress code but apparently you cannot wear a hat. I wouldn't have imagined a place that is 30 different pastel colors would have a dress code stricter than any casual dining restraunt. Perhaps the tears in the seats of several of the boths just add to the charm to some, but not to me. I was informed at the greeter's station that hats were not allowed at the tables. Upon being seated, away from the main dining area by the owner, I overheard a conversation were it was stated, "They come in a lot on Saturdays" by staff. If I had known about the rule beforehand it would not have been a problem. I just happened to wear a baseball hat today. In the past, I worked in a restraunt for several years. I have never made anyone feel like a second class citizen and imaging I would have been fired if I did so. As a guest of any restraunt I always tip well, I am polite, and in general dress well (aside from today's hat). I have not been to this restraunt since last year but I will say I will never be back. The food has been good in the past but nothing I would write home about. Service in the past has been on par with other restraunts as well given I was always dressed in a shirt and tie. No food is worth this insult however. I left Cuz's to the sight of a few of the staff along with the owner (suspected) standing and waiting as if they expected us to leave. This is no way to treat people and not the action of one person, but many at the same time in a coordinated effort. I never write reviews and generally let things go. I felt like this was above and beyond however not due to the rule, but the classification and treatment by staff as being different. I thought others should know. read more

This is a MUST TRY, if you're in the area. It's really unique, and that's what we're all really looking for right? They have a HUGE 36 oz smoke prime rib called "Hunka". If it's your first time here, and you might not be back, you have to get eat and you have to eat the whole thing. You will be intimidated when it arrives, in heaven while it's in your mouth, and miserable after it's gone; but you will have conquered the beast! Oh, and they have morels seasonally too! And they cook them so very well! It was better that what I could do at home. Crazy place in the middle of no where. Not many choices other than a few chains. I love the atmosphere. I have eaten here many times during business travel. The food has always been great. This last time I ordered a veggie pizza. I could see in the kitchen and hear their conversation. I knew when they fixed mine because they were laughing about the veggie pizza they were going to give me. I got a pizza crust with tomato sauce and green peppers. The waitress delivered it and gave me a funny look. Then she came back and said she didn't think the pizza looked right and could she get the owner. I said sure. The owner came back and asked what she could do to make this better. She ended up bringing me a plate full of various toppings so I could put whatever I wanted on the pizza. I ordered dessert and it was "old" tasting as if it had set around for a while. So my take on this experience is if you go for the meat and seafood it all good but if you want to change anything or order something special forget about it. My daughters and I love the catfish, you have to try it.....we don't care much for fish, but with this homemade beer batter and homemade tarter sauce, you'll be in heaven......so awesome! I've been going to Cuz's since the beginning of time! Took 4 neophytes there this week who had never been. First of all i told them, get ready to expect a atmosphere in a former dairy barn that looked like it was painted by a bunch of drunk hippies. Not degrading the place but it does have a unique atmosphere that must be appreciated. Once inside, they were very impressed! We were seated and catered to to the nth degree! The service was above and beyond, very helpful in explaining the menu to the neophytes! We all had the smoked prime rib and it was absolutely awesome! This place is a holy ground! You must experience it to understand. The food was awesome...nothing like you will ever experience. I told our crew somewhere in your life you will talk about Cuz.s and someone will say "Hey i have been there!" This is truly a SWVA jewel place to experience.
