The waitstaff is attentive and capable and the ambiance is great for lunch or dinner. The menu offers a great variety of Louisiana options (surprise) to go with great burgers. The poboys are as good as you'll find in town. The muffalettas, in fact, were rated 'Best North of I-10' by the Chronicle. I can't say as how I've had all the options north of I-10, but I'd wager money they're the best west of the Sabine river. I highly recommend the crawfish eggrolls, crawfish etouffee and muffaletta as well as any fried seafood option. read more

Hidden little gem for naw'leans style grub! I was excited about going to eat here since it's been on my list for ages now. It's a quiet lil' place that is always packed, so off we went for some gumbo. We sat at the bar (which we don't mind doing, it's not necessary for the man and I to have a seat in order to enjoy ourselves) and Kay, our bartender, was awesome. We ordered some spicy cajun crabcakes to start. They were pretty good, but lots of filler. The 2 sauces we got with were spot on though - one was a spicy tarter kind of sauce and the other was some kind of spicy orange sauce. Both fantastic. I ordered the pork chop per our bartender's recommendation and the man got the shrimp. The shrimp was good - cooked just right and the sauce it was cooked in was okay - kind of runny. My porkchop was undercooked, so Kay took it off of our bill and brought me a new one. It was good, but again, not knock-your-socks-off. The two sides I got with it were the garlic mashed potatoes and some steamed broccoli. The man got this corn maque choux, which is a New Orleans specialty. It had corn, red and green bell peppers and some green onion it in. It was awesome! We also ordered a cup of chicken and sausage gumbo to split. That was outta sight. They also have happy hour all day on Wednesday, so we went on a great day for drink specials. This place probably would have at least gotten 4 stars if my porkchop had come out perfecto, but sometimes that happens. read more

Cypress Grill is a gem here in Southwest Austin. Located in the strip mall next to Gold's Gym, this amazing local cajun place serves quality food. I will venture here for lunch or dinner. It is a small place, but certainly is popular and fills up fast. They have a sun room area they can open up on nice days for outdoor seating. Cypress grill is serving a long list of cajun items, but they have many options. Great things to order are the blackened tilapia, seafood gumbo, muffuletta, po-boy sandwiches, catfish, shrimp and other items. Try the chicken tejano dish which is a grilled chicken breast with melted cheese and jalapeno strips on a bed of brown rice. I think the chicken tenders are quite awesome with the side order of honey mustard they serve. The pot roast dish is an excellent recipe they have with a side of mash potatoes and bread. You can get a good serving of chicken fried steak, rattlesnake pasta, or even a tasty burger. Dont forget all the great side items they serve and there rotating vegetable of the day. Cypress Grill has a fully stock bar for all sorts of great drinks. Sometimes on Thursdays they will have live music. They serve an excellent lunch special menu that is well priced. Weekends they offer a special brunch menu. Crawfish boils is every Tuesday and Saturday night when in season in the spring. Also if you like New Orleans style desserts, you should give this place a try. I have been going to Cypress Grill for a long time and all my peers have enjoyed it also. It certainly can get crowded at peak hours with its limited tables, but thats anything popular in Austin. My husband and I have tried all Cajun/Creole restaurants in ATX and this is as good as it gets. It is located in the same shopping center as Golds gym on W William Cannon across from Torchy's Taco. The staff is extremely and helpful when it come to suggesting an entrée and give us plenty of time to look over the extensive menu. We start off with a bowl of seafood gumbo. The gumbo have a great kick and they are full of crabmeat and seafood. I am salivating just thinking about the gumbo right now. For entree, I ordered the "Crawfish Delight" which is 1/2 étouffée and 1/2 fried crawfish tails served with white rice and french baguette. They were delicious!!! The portion was generous enough for 1 leftover meal. My husband got the "Stuffed Pork-chop" with rice and beans. The waiter said that it is the best pork-chop he have ever had in his life and HE'S NOT LYING!! The pork-chop was stuffed with cheese and "crawfish étouffée" like mixture, it was DELICIOUS! This is Austin strip mall dining at its finest. We dined here Sunday evening, on Father's Day after their brunch, so in sure they were slammed earlier in the day. Even so, they were able to get us a seat right away in their patio room. The patio door was closed during our dining experience, but it was overcast, hot and muggy so that's ok. The service here was decent. As I said earlier, they were probably slammed earlier in the day so they seemed a little light on staff. Our food took a little longer than average to come out. The food was definitely the best part of this place. I started with a cup of the seafood gumbo. Very fresh and full of flavor. I typically eat my gumbo a little spicier, but they have tobasco sauce on the table so you can flavor to your liking. For my Main entree, I ordered the chicken tejado with dirty rice and mustard greens. The food was excellent. It tasted like a home made dish, and was not too greasy considering what I was eating. My girlfriend got the fried catfish and it was amazing. I will probably order this the next time I done here! Oh good lord, it's been too long since we've been here. But we all know how life gets in the way of truly good things. I stand by my previous 5-star review. Service is still impecible and attentive. We only required a 2-top, so, even though it was a packed house on a busy Saturday night, we were seated immediately. So in my last review I mentioned killer 'ritas. Well, I'm here to slur about their kick-you-in-the-backside Hurricanes. (Well, it IS Mardi Gras season, after all. We just HAD to order them, ya know.) Sampler appitizer plate was wonderful. The boudin balls are excellent, as always. The egg rolls are quite tasty, with or without the sauces. The crab cake was tasty, as well, but never as good as something you'd get on the East Coast. But still ... tasty ... and gobbled up. The tilapia with etouffe and the shrimp en brichotte were excellent. And I seriously do not know what they're doing with their dirty rice -- it is SO good, and I do not care for rice of any kind usually. Like I said a couple of years ago, I am normally a "I'm full after the appetizers ... just box the rest up" person. I don't know what it is ... I just keep eating this stuff at Cypress even after I'm in full-to-pop mode. It's that good. Once again, I will say I am so very happy to have a good Cajun/Creole place in South Austin. i was here last Saturday along with some Yelp friends on one of the Welcome Wagon Socials UYE. This is usually a little out of the way and so I might not have ever made it here in my normal stride. However the UYE brought me here and i am so glad I found this hidden gem. I had the creole eggs benedict which was eggs done over easy with some awesome sauce all on top of some English muffin. I like the potatoes and was eating it at first and ithought this was OK. But then I took a bite of the eggs and muffin and ham and I was in heaven. I actually asked our waitress what was the most popular dish they had and she pointed this dish out to me as one of the favorites. My friends got different dishes but they all loved their dished as well. Great food, friendly service and the place was not too crowded. Will definitely come back if I am in this part of town or have that craving for great Cajun or Creole food! read more

Must haves: New Orleans-Style BBQ Shrimp (ask them to add the cajun spice thingy) and Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie. The shrimp came with a very flavorful gravy soaked in all the cajun spice mix. One bite of the french bread dipped in the gravy took me to a completely different place (New Orleans probably !). My husband got the jambalaya. It tasted good too, but I am not a very big fan of jambalaya or gumbo. The next best thing was the delicious, buttery and perfect slice of chocolate pecan pie. I still get dreams about this pie. I wish I could explain in words how good it was ! and apparently, they even sell it by the pie. I know for sure what dessert I would be making/buying for my next house party. I've been here for brunch twice and have had the omelet and crawfish etoufee. Both have been phenomenal-- rich, flavorful, and not too spicy, which is important for me! The service is quick and friendly, and even when they're busy (which is always), they are still on top of things. The parking lot has lots of parking and this spot is just a couple second drive on William Cannon past Mopac. Highly recommend! read more

Hungry for some traditional Cajun food, we first picked a different but highly ranked restaurant and drove there. We were disappointed in the puny menu we decided to try somewhere else. Back to the car we went to search again. Hmmm, we landed across town at Crypress Grill, even more reviews, and we checked the menu online ahead of time. Now this is more like it! Every traditional Cajun dish and a full complement of Abita beer to go with it. This is one of the best Shrimp PO Boys I've had in a while, cooked perfectly, and the perfect fresh bread just made it complete. I couldn't stop there, so I also tried some chicken and sausage gumbo, some Jambalaya, dirty rice, as well as a cup of red beans and rice. All of which were great, but the Gumbo and Jamabalaya stole the show for me personally. Out of habit I asked for some Hot Sauce and some Tony's, both of which they brought to the table. However, I am SO glad I didn't use any on any of the dishes. No seasoning required. The flavors were great just as they were. Pretty liberal use of salt in the dishes, but hey, it's Cajun. Have a beer or two and enjoy it. This place may not scream good traditional cajun food in your list of choices, but trust me this is the Cajun restaurant you're looking for. For the price it is definitely underwhelming. Had the seafood platter and got the fried oysters +$2 and they were very small and overdone to the point of a hard rock. They're fries were over salted and they forgot to bring my Cesar Salad. Had to ask the waiter to bring my salad. The good was the fried shrimp and fried crawfish. Definitely wouldn't come back especially with Evangeline Cafe right down the street, less expensive and better food. Wait staff were nice minus the mishap with my order. Our first visit, but probably not our last. The fried green tomato sandwich was top notch with a nice thick slice of green tomato rather than the tasteless paper thin slices some restaurants serve. Great Cajun food find, I would recommend making a reservation on the weekends, it gets crowded. There seemed to be a wait, but we got seated right away. There was music so it was nice as well, can get a little loud. But it was fun, the food is down home Cajun cooking. The boudin balls were delicious, I really enjoyed it. **this review is for bread pudding only** I had the hankering for some bread pudding. It's not an easy craving to subdue so I ended up driving down to South Austin to hit up Cypress Grill. The establishment seemed legit and I'll definitely be back for, what looked like, their back mac 'n' cheese. A patron was munchin' on a plate of that and it looked dank af!! Anyhoo, the bread pudding i recieved was a small end piece and they gave me two containers of glaze which seemed like overkill. The pudding was more like a bread on the edges, which is interesting, and pudding-y in the center. It was good, but just kinda slackin' in size. The glaze is epic! I'd say 3 star for bread pudding and an extra star for speed of service, cool staff, and glaze being dank af! read more

Everytime my husband, and I come here we have a great experience. Always great service, and food. We choose this place specifically for special occasions because we know we won't be disappointed. Food is always consistent, and delicious. Being from the Louisiana/Mississippi line this place is ridiculously authentic. Also, the cocktails are definitely not short handed. I'm a tequila girl, but I'm buzzed after one happy hour (4 dollar) margarita. Husband loves the blackened salmon, and I love anything with crawfish! And the jambalaya is to die for! Yum. Amazing, real Cajun food. You honestly cannot go wrong with anything on the menu here. Personal favorites for me? Atchafalaya Catfish covered in Crawfish Etouffèe! Yum, yum, yum! For sides, get the steamed broccoli. I don't know what those guys do, but their broccoli is addicting! Who knew broccoli could taste THAT GOOD. Incredible. Also, their po-boys are authentic, with bread flown in from Leidenheimer's Bakery in New Orleans. They even have a "skinny menu" now for those of you that still care about your waistline. No, the aforementioned items are not on that menu. Maybe the broccoli though. For those of you past the point of caring about your waistlines, get the bourbon chocolate pecan pie! OMG! You will have a "When Harry Met Sally" moment... except you won't be faking it. Honestly, can't say enough about this place. John Haug is the owner and he really does care about his customers. Word of caution however. When ordering food to go, do check your order. They most often are missing items, unfortunately. It's happened more often than not for us, unfortunately. When possible, we eat in, but we have elderly folk and it's hard to get them out sometimes. It's a cool atmosphere, though, so worth hanging out there. Plus, the bartenders are fun! Came here for their Crawfish they serve on Tuesday's until they run out. When we arrived there was a line and was told that the wait would be 20 minutes. Not sure if it was 20 minutes that we waited but the hostess was knocking names off the list as the people had either left or she couldn't locate them, so I was glad she was going through the list pretty fast. I ordered their 3LBS crawfish, at first thought that this may be too much but I was able to finish it with no problem! It came with the usual corn and potatoes. They were big and really tasty compared to other crawfish that I've had, I will definitely be going back again before I leave. read more

Have yet to try the crawfish while here, but they have a great crawfish delight dish with etouffèe and fried tails! First time here a few weeks ago and it wasn't that busy on a Friday at 5pm ish. Took forever to get out male waiter and he wasn't friendly at all. Very disappointing. Food took awhile to get to table as well and it was only two of us and not a full restaurant. Food is totally delicious. Willing to give the customer service another chance, but if it happens again I'll probably continue to go to Evangeline Cafe off Brodie. A little pricey as well. For 15 years we lived 4 miles from Cypress Grill and went to their Saturday brunch nearly every week. The food is awesome and the wait staff is great. We loved the holidays when they have the buffet. Everything we have eaten is wonderful - eggs, pecan pancakes, chicken fried steak, etc. Unfortunately, we are now 400 miles from Cypress Grill, so... we miss it. read more

I usually have the lunch portion of the little pot roast which is perfectly portioned with the mashers.... Last night I think I got the full plate as there was a ton of meat compared to mashers... Wish there was a tad more mashers, but what a gripe : ) Too much meat... Not enough veggies... Too funny! Thanks for keeping such a wonderful restaurant open and running at full speed. Ordered food to go, three well done Salmom salads (were undercooked) $17.99 each, and an order of very average tasting, small portion, fries $2.99. Accidentally tipped $10.00 a little extravagant tip for a to go order, especially in light of the undisclosed $3.00 packaging fee. So disappointed to look at itemized receipt in the bag while cleaning up to discover a $3.00 packaging fee which they also charged sales tax on - a whopping $$74.99 for 3 salads and a small portion of fries!!! Feeling annoyed and ripped off-want a meal to go, order it in, have a waiter serve you, dirty dishes, take a bite, get a to go box and take it home. Make sure the salmon is cooked all of the way through first and don't bother with the fries, they are a complete waste of money and calories.
