Hands down one of the best brunches I've had in Austin! Mattie's is located on a beautiful property with indoor seating in a historic home as well as outdoor seating in their beautiful gardens. Imagine dining in a garden oasis surrounded by stunning oak trees and peacocks! It was awesome. The food was for the most part fantastic as well. Mattie's has always been on my radar ever since moving to Austin 6 years ago, but until now, I have never had the chance to check it out. My fiancé and I made a last-minute, day-of dinner reservation for 9pm (we like to eat late, so the timing was not an issue for us). We were a little confused at first when we arrived, given that it is in a residential neighborhood, but we found free street parking just in front of the property. There is also $10 valet parking available on-site. Mattie's is located on a beautiful, stunning property with tons of trees and garden spaces, as well as a few other businesses (ex. I think there is an inn there, too). The restaurant itself looks like it used to be a gorgeous, huge house that they converted. When you walk in, the host stand is at the base of a big staircase. We checked in and were immediately seated. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, and we quickly ordered the biscuits as a starter, a beet salad, and the duck and risotto for entrees, as well as a bottle of wine. Our server let us know that the entrees are really big portions and we would likely have enough to take home (which ended up being true). The biscuits were so delicious. $8 for 2 biscuits, which were a good size, drizzled with honey and a side of butter. The beet salad was also tasty, with iced goat cheese, nuts, and some other ingredients. The duck and risotto were huge portions. Mattie's is definitely expensive, but you seriously get what you pay for, which is not something that can always be said for an expensive restaurant in terms of portion sizes. Let me start by saying that the chef who made the coffee french toast has this down 100% and it was probably the best french toast Ive ever had. Now as for service, hence the 1 star and if I could give zero I would. The lady who had the ipad in her hand (i approached her to ask if theres a ramp) she pointed and said its over there - waaaay around the corner of the house. For FOH, please get some etiquette training! We had reservations and it still took a good 30 min or so to get seated. So I went to the bar to get some cocktails for brunch. The girl tender sucked - I spoke to her and her response was rude. The dude tender was awesome and very nice and accomodating. We agreed that our server was having an off day bc she wasnt having it. I also noticed I was the only non-white person in the entire 2 rooms. Hoidy toidy and was I sitting in a plantation? Seriously guys get w the program. The only thing we liked were the peacocks and the INN looks modern and nice with an event canopy area in the back of the house. I started with a mimosa, which was good but seemed like I was getting someone's left over glass since it was only maybe half full. We got the biscuits and strawberry butter to start. The biscuits were not warm and the honey drizzle was everywhere. The knife and the edges of the plate they brought with it was covered in it so we were covered in it. The burrata and peaches salad was ok. The peaches were not great, some had an overly fake smoke taste while some had zero taste altogether. This is a truly unique dining experience in Austin! You pull into the driveway and are immediately greeted by many peacocks - there was even a baby peacock while we were there. The ambiance is 5/5, great restaurant with plenty of parking and wait staff is very nice. If you arrive early there is a bar you can get a drink even order food. We got a few appetizers tonight which were all good: Peaches and burrata Pimiento cheese Carrots Most of the table got the steak frites. This dish for the entire table was completely oversalted. The French fries were inedible for everyone there was so much salt. Literally. The steak also had too much salt. If the weather is nice, I highly recommend sitting outside, the peacocks are beautiful and it makes the whole experience feel extra special. This would also be a great spot to take out of town guests. There's no parking lot, but they offer valet and I was also able to find street parking pretty easily. The service was okay. They were very busy when we went, and the staff seemed a bit stressed and not as friendly as usual, but it was still fine. I ordered the congee and added scrambled egg on top. I happily saved leftovers from my fried chicken eggs benedict since the portion was so large. My friends ordered the green chile pork chilaquiles, flat iron steak and eggs, and brioche cinnamon rolls. I got to try all of them. The cinnamon rolls were such a warm and delicious starter. I thought the green chile pork chilaquiles were really good. I wasn't a big fan of the chimichurri sauce on the steak and eggs, but my friend really liked it. I think that entree is good if you really, really love meat/protein because there are no vegetables. I put in my reservation that we were celebrating two birthdays, and the server brought out two little chocolate mousse cakes, which was so sweet of them. They were beautiful with a candle on each and little happy birthday signs made out of chocolate. The service was impeccable, although I read that may not have been the case for other reviewers. I had a fantastic birthday brunch experience here, and I would highly recommend Mattie's for a special occasion. We each paid an average of $30 plus tip. Food: ok to preface this.... I am from the South. And I have a certain expectation of southern cuisine. So for me, it wasn't the best I ever had, but wasn't terrible either. You could tell food was made with quality ingredients. Portions large. My husband had the creamy spring ricotta (no meat). Surprising it was a little spicy. I had the fried chicken, mash potato and salad. The chicken batter was kind of bland to me but clearly the chicken had been marinated in some type of hot sauce. So it had a kick but not a crunchy skin flavor (if that makes sense?! I'm biased to Gus's or T22 for my fried chicken). Our server recommended their biscuits (2) with honey and pumpkin maple butter were good. My 3 yr old devoured his buttered noodles. For dessert we had the hummingbird cake. Again not bad but not really a wow. One word of caution if you bring children- the juice choices were orange and grapefruit which my son doesn't drink, and the server offered lemonade. Just know that a kids' lemonade is $6 and it's not sweetened, it's basically lemon squeezed into water. So my son didn't drink it at all. A waste on our part and we didn't know until we got the bill. I usually travel with his liquids but forgot this time, so this was on us. But $6 for a kids size drink is a tad bit ridiculous if you ask me. Service: excellent service. Server seemed knowledgeable and experienced with questions about the menu. Timely and frequent check ins. Ambience: unique and beautiful property located in an 1800s farmhouse. Feels like stepping back in time from urban Austin that surrounds it. Of course the big draw is the free ranging peacocks. The peacocks didn't really approach or bother. I had the most fantastic dinner at Mattie's with my fiancé for my birthday. It was our first time coming and we were hoping to see the peacocks but it was dark out to they were asleep sadly, but our dinner more than made up for missing them! The restaurant is a beautiful home with a super interesting history, they gave us a pamphlet to read about it which was lovely. Our server was excellent and we were seated immediately with our reservation. We started with the vodka back porch tea, we're not a huge fan of sweet drinks and this one was perfect, not sweet at all. We had the octopus special with mole for our appetizer which was our favorite thing we tried! We heard it was a brand new menu item so I hope they keep it. For our main course I had the fried chicken, which came with mashed potatoes and salad - it was fantastic and very generous portion sizes. My fiancé got the grilled chicken with panzanella salad, the grilled chicken was huge!! He really enjoyed it but liked my chicken and salad better. I believe the restaurant was previously a home converted into a dining restaurant, very cozy! I think the food was decent, the fried chicken was probably my favourite - it was really juicy and crunchy. The bread pudding tasted good, very soft and spongy. The green chilli was decent but the chips were soggy because they put too much sauce on top of it. Overall I think the experience was great with good service. I feel this place was great in everything but the actual food. There was a ton of street parking, the servers were attentive and the place was cute but the chicken egg biscuit were kinda terrible. I have no idea how they managed to overcook chicken thigh but they did. The seasoning was also way too salty that I basically felt bloated and wasn't hungry rest of the day. The only flavor I tasted in that dish was salt. I would say that this is a great place for drinks and photo op but definitely not dining. Usually I wouldn't be so harsh if the food was decent or even average but this was not even an average Austin dining experience. The food was actually bad. Although they mentioned a lot of reservations were coming in, they offered us seats at the bar either downstairs or upstairs. We chose upstairs, and I'm so glad we did. He was busy making drinks but still took the time to chat and answer our questions about the place, which we appreciated. For our meals, I had the breakfast plate and he ordered the fried chicken eggs Benedict. They were decent, though not particularly memorable. Sawyer was an amazing bar keep! Prompt and spot on with a Cabernet and Lemondrop. Very tasty pimento cheese app. We were seated and the only stumble of the night, we sat unattended for about 10 minutes. However manager popped over to apologize and Michael out wait staff stepped up and they more than compensated for the wait with incredible service the rest of the night. We had entree of braised ribs and an entree of salmon. Super tasty. Priced well and our food came out amazingly fast. Push it was our anniversary so complementary champagne and desert. Overall: Mattie's is beautiful! Surround by grand trees and peacocks, this is a great option for an event or just a cute spot for friends. I've been to Mattie's twice now and the first time the food was good but the second time was disappointing. Both times, staff have been kind and helpful. What I Got: - Biscuits: I really their biscuits. I'd recommend to get them for the table. - Lobster Cobb: I really like the lobster cobb! It's a huge salad with chucky pieces of meat. The bacon came out VERY cooked (it was black, so burnt) and we sent it back for new pieces. - Chicken and Waffles: This was not good. The serve did let me know that it would be a chicken cutlet and their take on a bread pudding (it's their biscuits but bread pudding style), so not chicken and waffles at all. I had their fried chicken eggs benedict, which consists of fried chicken sitting on a bed of buttermilk biscuits, topped with two poached eggs and hollandaise sauce, and served with a side of green salad. It was a little bit spicy but so flavorful, and the portion was large. To drink, I tried their iced chai latte with almond milk, which was delicious. The service was superb. My friend and I lost track of time while eating and were the last people to leave, but we were never kicked out or felt rushed to finish, which I really appreciated. November 19, 2023 came in this weekend from Galveston, TX, and every time I make this trip, my friends let me pick the restaurant this place fills up very quickly, we had an 11am reservation, and there were 25-30 people in line waiting before 11 am! this historical home is beautiful and the trees... they're huge and everywhere. LOVE it was misty rain all day, so I wasn't sure I'd see a peacock; we didn't see any when we got there but when I left... and got to the end of the driveway...here he comes from down the street! If only I could give a 1000 stars review... What a magical place. From the atmosphere, historic home, impeccable service, outstanding food and genuine kindness from every staff member. Thank you thank you thank you for making our first visit utterly beautiful. Shout out to Maggie, you are a gem. We had a handcrafted iced latte, back porch tea, fried green tomatoes with crab salad (literally chefs kiss). Entrees were insane as well.
