I'm just curious as to why I've never been to this gem before a few weeks ago. I've already been back twice. They have a really creative drink menu. Mexican martinis, raspberry martinis, watermelon martinis. Those are called watermeltinis or something. Anyway, they've got a spicy bloody mary that takes me right back to the bayou. It is spicy and delicious, and tastes like it might have bits of real squirrel in it. That's right, you know it's good. As for the food, I've only been aperitivo hopping thus far and it's been delicious. This place is awesome. 4 stars b/c it's good but not worth driving across town/the state for. We arrived right when their breakfast service was ending on a Sunday morning. However, they graciously allowed us to still order from their breakfast menu. I ordered the French Toast, it was made with French Bread instead of regular sliced bread with a small sprinkling of powdered sugar and a dollop of butter. Food is great but not exceptional. We decided to got out for dinner at the last minute and we wanted to try something different but close by. Cypress grill seemed like a good choice. We ordered New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp and they were really fantastic. The shrimps were sauteed in butter with garlic, red onions, Worcestershire sauce and Abita Beer and the sauce had a really unique flavor. The shrimp pasta Rockefeller was good as well in garlic and white wine sauce but the shrimps were really tiny. The best part was dessert since it was free:) On Sunday nights they have a flip a coin for dessert and the loser pays. We were really full but the Blackberry cobbler rounded up the meal nicely. read more

Just try it!!! It does take a little longer to get your food so order apps but our mains were so freaking good dessert was a must.

I don't often hand out the 5 stars, but this place has been so consistently good for so long that it has finally earned a "Yelpie" from me. The bad first, since I want to get it out of the way. It's small, and only some of the tables are inside with virtually no waiting area for those wanting A/C while waiting. Their happy hour, for being a place not downtown, ends too quickly to really be much of anything but something for the people who don't commute from South Austin. They only have margs on the rocks, not frozen (pet peeve of mine). They try to do music indoors, and the place is just too darned small for a band blaring in the ears of the customers. Also, it is in a strip mall that shares itself with a Gold's Gym, and the parking can be a major pain in the tail if you go when the workout people get there right after work. Phew. I'm done with that. Now the good. AWESOME food. I mean awesome. For an appetizer, I suggest the crawfish eggrolls. I'm not an eggroll guy, so I literally had to be taunted into even trying one. Basically, it is a wrapped cheddar, jalapeno and crawfish tail eggroll. It is usually served piping hot out of the frier, so I HIGHLY suggest cutting it open with a fork before trying to bite into it...you'll thank me later. If you want a dinner or lunch recommendation, that literally has worked with every family member of every color and stripe, is to get the blackened catfish filet with crawfish etouffee as a topper, pay the extra buck or so for the side of the gumbo (seafood if they have it), and don't forget to order it "cajun thunder" style. The Cajun Thunder is a cayenne-based mix of spices they toss over it at the end to add a little bit of heat to the meal. TIP: if you really like your cajun spicy, ask for the shaker of cajun thunder...they keep it in a salt shaker in the kitchen and they'll bring it to you so you can "thunder" it up yourself. They also make phenomenal home-made sodas, my favorite is the lemon lime. Until recently they were the price of ordering an adult beverage...but they started offering free refills making it a very choice choice. They make great desserts, particularly the Bourbon Pecan Pie. I suggest having them serve it to you warm (which means you have to plan ahead). The service is usually great, attentive and friendly. If you go often enough, it is well worth it to get a Royalty Rewards card with them as well...they tally your points and send you coupons for free appetizers and $10 off meals in the mail. Can't beat it. They also have amazing wine specials at some point in the week. And if you get lucky, perhaps you'll be there on Tuesdays during crawfish season. They serve great, spicy boiled crawfish until they run out at reasonable prices. And their fathers and mothers day (and other holidays like Easter) brunches are easily worth the money. How often can you have an omelette with an etouffee topper? Yeah...they most definitely get a Yelpie. read more

Cypress Grill gets good marks from most folks, but so far, I haven't seen anyone mention the weekend breakfasts. From 8:30 to 11:30 on Saturday and Sunday mornings, CG serves up some very nice omelettes (the seafood is best, or you can build your own), as well as Eggs Benedict or Napoleon, Cypress French Toast, and a long list of sides. Prices are pretty reasonable, too. It's the perfect place to stop before you hit Costco for your weekend stock-up expedition. read more

We were desperate to find a dine in option tonight. We were over take out and did not feel like cleaning the kitchen again. We decided to try Cypress Grill for the first time. The food was great, the staff was great, BUT the safe experience was PRICELESS. This establishment has gone above and beyond to create a safe environment that allows you to fully enjoy your meal. We were very impressed!!! Make shift plexiglass walls and a plexiglass window thing at the bar. If you are sick of take out or cooking and want to have delicious food and drinks in a safe environment, you can not find a better place! read more

We have been there a couple of times...the first time was not all that great. The food was bland, the service was even worse, and the price tag was so not worth it. I went again for a friends birthday and I had the cajun eggs benedict...redemption! The service was still ick but the sauce made up for all the other downfalls. It is not often that you eat an amazing appetizer sampler, much less a seafood one. I was not expecting such a great find in a strip mall. Normally an appetizer tray might have some fried shrimp and hushpuppies, but here you get some rowdy junk. Cypress Grill is kind of an odd eatery, and the joint is pretty cluttered. It is located in a large center with a workout facility and lots of shopping stores. This would definitely be the place to blow your workout if you happen to be hungry for fried goodness after a bout at Gold's Gym. So if the appetizer platter was so delicious, why does CG not get a 5? The other stuff was not so great. I started with the seafood gumbo, but I am sure that my first bowl was chicken and sausage gumbo; 93% sure. I got the seafood gumbo, but there was still no shrimp or crawfish as advertised. They even claimed that my first bowl had chunks of crab... if your crab taste like chicken, you certainly have a problem. Also, at $5 a bowl that is 3/4 filled with rice is pretty steep. The seasonal crawfish platter came with slightly soggy corn and a mushy, underseasoned quarter potato. The crawfish were spicy enough, but $7 a lb. did not do it justice. Now... onto the aforementioned sampler: 1 crabcake, 3 boudin balls, and 2 crawfish eggrolls. The crabcake had a thick deep-fry crust, and the inside was soft with a small crunch from the veggies; the tarter-ish sauce was solid. The 3 boudin balls were perfectly fried, and the inside was moist; the Remoulade sauce was rich. The crawfish eggrolls did not have much crawfish, but the creamy cheese and jalapenos were pleasant inside of the awesome crust; the chipotle ranch was cooling. Cypress Grill offers a great dining experience, but the gem here is something that is normally overlooked. I must say that there are not many places in Austin that offer boudin balls, deep fried crabcakes, and crawfish eggrolls. They have my vote; go check them out. read more

Went here last night and had nothing but a good experience. I am not a huge fan of the Cajun food but they gave more of a variety for a spicy weenie like myself. Our waitress was very attentive and even put up with my toddler deciding every so often that one seat was better than the other. I like this place... We come here a lot after going to the gym since it's so close. The staff is always nice even though we are sweaty and disgusting. And they are quick to fill up my husbands water, which goes quick after a work out. Everything I've tried is good. There isn't any one thing I can't live without though. I had been here once before before Covid and I don't remember what I ordered but it was kind of meh. My family though enjoyed their meals and since this is a neighborhood restaurant I decided to give it another try. I'm glad I did. I ordered the shrimp po-boy and it was absolutely delicious. The bread was perfect po-boy bread, crusty on top and flully and soft in the middle. The tomatoes and lettuce were crisp and fresh and the fries were piping hot. I ordered the large with the full intention of taking half of the sandwich home and giving it to my son but I ate the whole thing it was that good. There was so much shrimp in the sandwich, a few of them fell off while eating so I asked for some tartar sauce. I was only one of four patrons in the place so I get that customer service is much easier in the time of Covid, but I hope this establishment keeps the momentum going as Texas "opens up" and makes the dine-in experience as amazing for every customer as it was for me. All good people!! We have been there SEVERAL times as it is in the hood and have never had a bad meal. I have had a good portion of the menu and to be honest I haven't had anything I didn't like. The atchafalaya catfish is awesome. I LOVE the crawfish linguini, the poboys are good. All menu items are between something like $7-$15. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and convenient (at least for me) location. Waaaay better than Evangelines in my opinion. Cheers! read more

When first I stumbled into Cypress Grill, the smooth jazz greeted me at the door like a gentle breeze on that hot summer day. Starving with my sleeping 3 month old in tow, I pulled into a strip center West of Mopac settling on a sub sandwich. Poboys, Étouffée,Gumbo etc plastered the window and called me away. Immediately greeted by a smiling young gentleman, I had planned to take my pot roast poboy to go but changed my mind quickly after another meal hit the table next to me. I did not regret the decision and quickly ate every bite! I immediately told my husband we would have to go. Upon our return, the bright warm walls, images of NOLA, and collection of awards and local art greeted us like coming home. Abita beers, boudin balls, étouffée, and jambalaya hit the table in delightful waves, each almost more delicious than the previous. As we gorged ourselves on the jambalaya and étouffée, we couldn't stop remarking at how good it was! Creamy, well seasoned and filled with generous servings of their respective meats...we even went as far as to clean the plates with the nearly superfluous garlic bread.(not the focus of such a delicious plate) We will DEFINITELY be returning, again and again. Oh goodness. If I lived in Austin I'd probably brunch at Cypress Grill every weekend. I love the concept of a cajun brunch, and the brunch here fit the bill. Our group of 5 was promptly serviced in the small restaurant. We had two servers attend to us and they were both so nice! Now let's talk food. I got the Eggs Napoleon--an english muffin smothered in crawfish etouffe and cheese and gloried with a poached egg. So much yum. The crawfish was tender, juicy, and the sauce flavorful. The poached eggs were smooth and golden and runny. I chose the cheese grits for my side-lots of garlicky cheesy flavor there. I just had to try the red beans and rice, so I added that as an extra side. Substantial and savory with the perfect ratio of beans to rice. Our group also enjoyed the Cajun Hash-lots of yummy bits of meat and potato--and omelettes--customizable to your liking. The mimosas were $3.50, and you can pick your choice of orange, cranberry, or grapefruit juice. Both the cranberry and grapefruit mimosas were decent. A great little joint! One side of the restaurant is kind of indoor patio, with a wall that can be removed to let in fresh air. read more

So I went to Cypress Grill looking for a good muffaletta.. the meat and cheese were spot on, but the entire sandwich seriously lacked in olive oil (and the olive salad wasn't plentiful enough). The worst part though was the bread, which was just a hamburger bun. If that's the "Best Muffaletta this side of I-10" I'm going to go cry! The gumbo tasted like it was home-made and not something just heated and doctored up (like most places serve it). Definitely a good choice. And lots of good sausage to boot. Fries were good, but would be much better with some kind of seasoning. Perhaps salt would be a good starting point... Side salad was good too, mixed greens with spinach, shredded carrot, and a couple tomato slices. Nothing too special, and not exactly perfectly chilled, but no big complaints either. Fried shrimp couldn't get much better (juicy on the inside, crispy and relatively light on the outside).. except they lacked seasoning as well, not an issue with good cocktail sauce, but the cocktail sauce wasn't unique at all. The menu is vast and interesting enough to warrant a return visit, which I will be making. read more

I was lured in by the Crispy Oyster Caesar Salad, which unfortunately they were out of. From discussion at a table of regulars, it sounds like they have been having trouble getting oysters in lately. Instead I had the crab cakes (spicy, fried but not greasy, massive for an appie, $9.69), a side of mustard greens and a side of red beans & rice (both $2.79). I wasn't crazy about the mustard greens, but I loved the red beans & rice and would definitely come back to make a meal out of two orders of it (they do offer a red beans & rice entree, but it comes with sausage). Pros: Fair beer prices, pretty solid etoufee and dirty rice Cons: If you don't get a reservation there seemed to be a pretty long wait. Also, the waiter spilled ranch on the empty seat at our table and we had told him we might be expecting a person to join us but he let the ranch sit there for the entire meal :/ I don't know if this was a pro or a con but EVERYTHING seemed to be fried. We got the sampler plate and every single item was deep fried, even the crab cake. I find that when you do that all your food kind of starts to taste the same. We got the Atchafalaya catfish and the crawfish etoufee and both were good. Nothing I would write home about, but good. I had the quarter Muffuletta with Chicken & Andouille gumbo. The gumbo was pretty good with a proper roux base. The andouille was hearty and lean. The Muffuletta was pretty close to authentic New Orleans style. There were very minor tweaks that I expect have been made for the typical squeamish Austin pallet. There was less use of olive oil than I am used to, but I found the change interesting. The bread itself was spot on minus the olive oil. The meat and cheese were proper temperature melted together. The olive dressing was pretty good, but with less of it than I expected. Still I was happy with it. read more

The hostesses seemed overwhelmed which was understandable. The staff is very friendly and they do their best to accommodate all of their customers. The drinks were good and strong. The food was fine. Everything was fresh and the plates were appetizing. We enjoyed it but didn't love it. Nothing was wrong, no mistakes were made, nothing forgotten which is great when a restaurant is so busy, but it didn't blow us away. read more

It's all about their specialities which include fried catfish and mudbugs, Jambalaya, gumbo, étouffée, red beans and rice and more. Wow. Knocked our socks off. And apparently they have regular crawfish boils and a large annual Mardi Gras Party. Will be a new regular place for us for sure. read more

I've been here many times before but, I'm not sure what happened to the previous cook. I ordered the grilled catfish, substituted the white rice for the dirty rice and a side salad. I started to eat the fish and dirty rice and found that the fish was dry and the dirty rice was hard. I tried calling to speak to a manager but none answered. Don't Judge a Restaurant by the Outside! We were trying to go to lunch at the Sushi place a few doors down but it was Sunday and they were closed so we just looked around and picked this place at random. From the outside you'd never expect it to be this good. I had a Loaded Biscuit because I wanted breakfast and my fiance had the Trout. We ordered craw-fish bites to start with. Ben hasn't gone that crazy over fish in a long time. He savored every bite and I stole a few pieces of his Fried Okra when he wasn't looking. My loaded biscuit was to die for! The gravy was thick and creamy and rich, the biscuit was the backbone of the meal. I had scrambled eggs on top of mine and the meat was so savory. Ben was stuffed but still decided to order the brownie dessert which was amazing! This is probably our new favorite place! read more

Came in for brunch at about 1pm on a Saturday , the atmosphere and food were great! There was no wait, service was quick and pleasant. We got the napolean benedict, the Cajun hash, and the biscuits and gravy. We loved all of it! Will definitely come back when we get that Cajun craving again! read more
