The food tastes really good, but lately the service has been disappointing. There have been several times when items were missing from my order, and the staff did not seem very professional. I understand that mistakes happen, but it's frustrating when the same item is forgotten over and over again, especially since I visit this restaurant often. Another issue is the portion sizes. For almost $30, I expected a much larger catfish and shrimp platter. The catfish portions were so small that they looked more like chicken tenders than catfish fillets. The manager, Hidi, spoke with us privately about one of the mistakes, which I appreciated. However, after dealing with the same problems repeatedly, I'm disappointed. I love coming here for fresh fried fish. There are two entrances on the right is to go and the door on the left for dining in. Today we dined in and ordered my absolute favorite, the fish and shrimp combo. Walk up to counter place order and food is delivered to your table by number. On the way to NYC I made an effort to stop in New England for a lobster roll; D'Amato's was highly rated in New Haven! There are two parts to the building- one side for takeout only and one side for dine-in. I ordered a lobster roll, side of calamari, and a cup of clam chowder. Oh my goodness...hands down the best lobster I've had in my life! The lobster was super fresh and served on a buttery fluffy roll. I can't believe I never came here sooner! I met Heidi who is exceptional! She helped me plan out my meal so I could try as much as possible. The clam strips with seasoned well and were super fresh. They paired well with their amazing tartar sauce. I got the 1/2 and 1/2, French fries and onion rings also seasoned very well, fresh and crispy. Just bought a seafood platter with Clams Shrimp, Filets and Scallops. The scallops had burn crumbs from the bottom of the fryer attached to them. Whomever fixed the order should have discarded those scallops. The clams were tough the rest of the food was soso. Definitely not up to the standard that D'amatos use to stand for. All the seafood should have the same golden appearance as you can see that's not the case. I will not go there again. Next time I will go to The Sandpiper where the quality and taste are A number 1. Banger. came here as a stop on a road trip and was worth it. The only thing I knock is the price as for two people it came out to 100 for two lobster rolls and a seafood plater. The lobster rolls were so good and with no filler. The bun was perfectly buttered and the lobster was so sweet!. The seafood plater came with fish, clams strips, shrimp scallops and they gave so much sauce. Each was cooked to perfection and the we had leftover and they still tasted so good and it wasn't dry at all. Everything was moist and great tasting. This was my first time visiting' New Haven and D'Amatos seems to be a local favorite. Small and quaint establishment with on street parking. You had the ability to sit inside or outside; however, on this quite cold day we opted for inside. All of the food was freshly prepared, seasoned to perfection and served piping hot. Nothing but good food and great service. There was a young lady (I didn't catch her names) but she was able to multi task, get people's order correct and never get upset or annoyed even when the person on the phone seemed to want to know the price of every menu item. Must of it is fried seafood but oh so good. I usually get the mild white fries fish. It is a quick service spot with some picnic tables out front. Most of the time I've taken it to go. The prices are decent. I've always parked along the busy street and it has never been an issue. Small place. Plainly decorated. The service has always been fine for me. No complaints on my end. They're friendly most of the time. Other times it's just regular order, pay and thank you. Even though the fish is deep fried its not very oily or greasy. I hardly see any greasy residue in the containers it comes in. They've always seemed to be using fresh oil. They must change the oil frequently because I can tell when it's old oil that hasn't been changed recently. There's usually a taste difference and also the food absorbs the oil more and it's soaked into the food. That's not the case with place. They're located in a not so great section in New Haven on Whaley Ave but I luckily haven't experienced anything negative relative to the area. Nice place to eat with very fresh lobster rolls! The lobster rolls only had 2 pieces of that pointy ended, rubbery, foam-like end-of-the-claw pieces I don't like. It was full of very fresh and perfectly cooked claw and knuckle meat. The platter came with your choice of french fries or onion rings. We got the onion rings, which I have to tell you were The Best, freshly made onion rings we've had in quite a while. We'd actually ordered them, hoping they wouldn't be that good so we'd be able to have one or two and be done! :) But they were clearly made fresh and the batter was perfectly light... to die for! On a recent excursion to New Haven, friend and I found this little gem not far from our final destination (Ikea). The gentleman who took our order did so quickly and efficiently. After reading so many positive reviews- I had to see it for myself and wife. We got there early at 11:30 AM and found nearby parking. Note - there's no parking permitted in front of the building. So start scouting for parking when you're about a block away. There's only street parking. No meter , although the street signs notes only 1 hr parking permitted. When we entered D'Amato we were greeted by a wonderful staffer. She was very patient and polite. We felt very welcome as we decided to order the deboned whiting with onion rings and the Cod fish with steak fries. We enjoyed our lunch and had some leftover to snack on tonight. The restaurant was very clean and neat. If the weather is nice you can sit outside in front of the store on one of their picnic tables. They have 2 entrances . The door on the right is for takeout and the door on the left is for dining in only. I found D'Amato seafood to be a casual and laid back place to lunch out. I took 2 photos which appears to be the same as previously taken over the past years by others. I guess when you got the formula down and if it's not broken - why change it. Had the scallop + whole clams, and a cod plate. The batter was light and seafood was fresh, what else can you ask for? My only complaint would be that the food seems a bit under-seasoned, but that may be a good thing so we aren't shoveling extra salt in with the fried food. Also I wish the cod came with a more interesting carb rather than plain white toast. But all in all, the seafood itself was better than I've had at some other fan faves. Sadly they were out of catfish and white chowder but the person who took our order gave good recommendations for substitution. The lobster bisque was good but I wish the temp was a little hotter. Let me say that everything was fried perfect crispy and the fish was fresh. It was so much food I was like done looking at it all.
