Lobster Roll, Calamari Order, New England Clam Chowder
    Abigail C.

On the way to NYC I made an effort to stop in New England for a lobster roll; D'Amato's was highly rated in New Haven! There are two parts to the building- one side for takeout only and one side for dine-in. I ordered a lobster roll, side of calamari, and a cup of clam chowder. Oh my goodness...hands down the best lobster I've had in my life! The lobster was super fresh and served on a buttery fluffy roll. The "side" of calamari was huge, and also came with 2 pieces of toast. It wasn't greasy and the calamari was well-spiced. The clam chowder had generous clam bits and felt like a warm hug. To anyone who needs a good seafood fix- D'Amato's is the place!

Wasted $44. See the burnt scallop all of them were like that

Just bought a seafood platter with Clams Shrimp, Filets and Scallops. The scallops had burn crumbs from the bottom of the fryer attached to them. Whomever fixed the order should have discarded those scallops. The clams were tough the rest of the food was soso. Definitely not up to the standard that D'amatos use to stand for. All the seafood should have the same golden appearance as you can see that's not the case. I will not go there again. Next time I will go to The Sandpiper where the quality and taste are A number 1. That was $44 wasted

I can't believe I never came here sooner! I met Heidi who is exceptional! She helped me plan out my meal so I could try as much as possible. The clam strips with seasoned well and were super fresh. They paired well with their amazing tartar sauce. I got the 1/2 and 1/2, French fries and onion rings also seasoned very well, fresh and crispy. The lobster roll was on a soft, buttered, toasted bun, a squeeze of lemon and I was in heaven. The outdoor seating is great.. can't wait to go back!

Whole belly fried clam platter came

Ordered whole clam Platter several times and it's always good but this last time it was more toast fries and onion rings than clams very disappointed in the little amount of clams

Excellent fried clam strips. The platter is very generous and enough for two people or one very hungry Yale student. Food came shortly after order. The dining area is spartan and a bit cool in winter., but we came for the food. Staff was friendly.

Great spot for fried seafood. Friendly service, she recommended the fried shrimp, which was crispy, tasty, and tender-- about 6 with the lunch special. Fries were actually potato wedges (yum). Onion rings were lightly breaded more like onion straws. Fried catfish was so flaky and delicate. Tartar sauce was yummy. I didn't ask my friend how the hot dog was but there was no evidence of it so it must have been good. Chowder was hearty and thick.

My first lobster roll since moving to Connecticut! Great taste -- wish the serving sizes looked more like the other reviews photos though.

Delicately fried not greasy at all! I really appreciate the fact that the dine in side did not smell like grease. 10/10

Service always friendly. I would drive 40 minutes one way at least twice a month. Food tasty and fresh. It all came to a halt last summer when I dined in with my family and saw a dead roach. I couldn't finish my meal. They say shrimp are the roaches of the sea, and still I cannot bring myself to eat at an establishment with roaches. Best of luck to you. Hope you get the bug problem straightened out. Absolutely not false! Actual paying customer. The dead critter was on the take out dine in side on the left side of the building. The dead roach was by the garbage cans in front of the register. Have absolutely no reason to lie on a business. I am surprised this was the only review that mentioned it. But maybe you contacted yelp on those to get deleted.

Nice place to eat with very fresh lobster rolls! The lobster rolls only had 2 pieces of that pointy ended, rubbery, foam-like end-of-the-claw pieces I don't like. It was full of very fresh and perfectly cooked claw and knuckle meat. The platter came with your choice of french fries or onion rings. We got the onion rings, which I have to tell you were The Best, freshly made onion rings we've had in quite a while. We'd actually ordered them, hoping they wouldn't be that good so we'd be able to have one or two and be done! :) But they were clearly made fresh and the batter was perfectly light... to die for! We polished off the entire basket, not meaning to. If they use the same batter for their other fried seafood, I bet it's also amazingly delicious. The coleslaw tasted fresh and was delicious too.

When you want high-quality fish that hits the mark every time, this is the definitive New Haven spot. It's a no-frills, reliable establishment that respects the craft of fresh seafood. The fish is consistently fresh and prepared with the kind of precision you only get from a place that's been a staple for decades. It is the perfect anchor for a "two-stop" dinner; the move is to grab your fish here and then head over to Sandra's Next Generation for a Miguel veggie plate. The environment is straightforward, focusing entirely on the quality of the product rather than unnecessary fluff. Pairing a meal from here with the sides from Sandra's is the ultimate local hack. It's an elite combination that delivers the best soul food and seafood experience in the Elm.

The view from the deck was also excellent, and the cocktails themselves were delicious. A lot of the appetizers were very good. The tuna tartare and the mussel curry were both inspired dishes; the mussels in the sauce had great flavor, though the portion sizes overall felt small. The blistered snap peas with preserved lemon were also delicious. That said, for a place with "oyster" in the name, we expected a wider or higher-quality selection, perhaps including some from Canada, rather than the fairly standard options from CT and MA. Unfortunately, the main dishes missed the mark for us and didn't offer enough food. The sea bass was overcooked. the accompanying lima beans weren't cooked all the way through, and the dish lacked depth of flavor. The skate wing and the shrimp mains also fell short, with the shrimp having a very odd, mushy bland flavor. To finish, the pot de crème had so much cream and so little actual chocolate that there was almost no chocolate flavor. On a separate note, navigating the QR code menu was pretty obnoxious. Restaurants should really just offer traditional paper menus; people stare at screens all day and come out to engage with each other, not look at a phone again, and constantly have it on the table. While I appreciate Fair Haven Oyster's creative concepts, their tinned fish with pickled sides, and their great starters, the execution on the mains and the portion sizes left something to be desired, especially at these price points. This was probably our sixth time going to Fairhaven Oyster. We've been going over the past few years and my overall takeaway is that I will definitely return for the drinks, the great atmosphere, and some appetizers, but will not be ordering mains.

The service has also been excellent, and it's hard to complain about the beautiful patio seating overlooking the water. Now, let's get to the meat of the issue--no pun intended. My girlfriend ordered the NY Strip steak medium rare. It arrived completely well done--not even remotely close to what was ordered. We politely asked our server (who was great throughout the entire experience) if the kitchen could remake it medium rare. A few minutes later, a replacement steak arrived that was somehow even more overcooked than the first one. At that point, I asked to speak with a manager. We were initially offered 50% off the steak, but in what world should anyone pay even a penny for a $40 steak that was overcooked twice? Unfortunately, the manager was combative from the start and essentially implied that he didn't believe my girlfriend hadn't eaten the steak. Anyone who enjoys steak rare or medium rare knows that a well-done hockey puck isn't exactly appetizing. After he stormed off, the steak was ultimately removed from the bill. However, the entire interaction felt unnecessarily aggressive and unprofessional. As a former restaurant manager myself, I would have immediately comped the steak and apologized for the mistake. In fact, given that the kitchen failed twice to cook a steak anywhere near the requested temperature, I would have strongly considered comping the entire meal out of embarrassment. It's unfortunate because the food is generally very good and the location is beautiful. What should have been a simple service recovery turned into a disappointing experience because of how management handled the situation.
