The food tastes really good, but lately the service has been disappointing. There have been several times when items were missing from my order, and the staff did not seem very professional. I understand that mistakes happen, but it's frustrating when the same item is forgotten over and over again, especially since I visit this restaurant often. Another issue is the portion sizes. For almost $30, I expected a much larger catfish and shrimp platter. The catfish portions were so small that they looked more like chicken tenders than catfish fillets. I can't believe I never came here sooner! I met Heidi who is exceptional! She helped me plan out my meal so I could try as much as possible. The clam strips with seasoned well and were super fresh. They paired well with their amazing tartar sauce. I got the 1/2 and 1/2, French fries and onion rings also seasoned very well, fresh and crispy. You had the ability to sit inside or outside; however, on this quite cold day we opted for inside. All of the food was freshly prepared, seasoned to perfection and served piping hot. There was a young lady (I didn't catch her names) but she was able to multi task, get people's order correct and never get upset or annoyed even when the person on the phone seemed to want to know the price of every menu item. Must of it is fried seafood but oh so good. I usually get the mild white fries fish. It is a quick service spot with some picnic tables out front. Most of the time I've taken it to go. The prices are decent. I've always parked along the busy street and it has never been an issue. Small place. Plainly decorated. The service has always been fine for me. No complaints on my end. They're friendly most of the time. Other times it's just regular order, pay and thank you. Even though the fish is deep fried its not very oily or greasy. I hardly see any greasy residue in the containers it comes in. They've always seemed to be using fresh oil. They must change the oil frequently because I can tell when it's old oil that hasn't been changed recently. There's usually a taste difference and also the food absorbs the oil more and it's soaked into the food. That's not the case with place. They're located in a not so great section in New Haven on Whaley Ave but I luckily haven't experienced anything negative relative to the area. We got the onion rings, which I have to tell you were The Best, freshly made onion rings we've had in quite a while. After reading so many positive reviews- I had to see it for myself and wife. We got there early at 11:30 AM and found nearby parking. Note - there's no parking permitted in front of the building. So start scouting for parking when you're about a block away. There's only street parking. No meter , although the street signs notes only 1 hr parking permitted. When we entered D'Amato we were greeted by a wonderful staffer. She was very patient and polite. We felt very welcome as we decided to order the deboned whiting with onion rings and the Cod fish with steak fries. We enjoyed our lunch and had some leftover to snack on tonight. The restaurant was very clean and neat. If the weather is nice you can sit outside in front of the store on one of their picnic tables. They have 2 entrances . The door on the right is for takeout and the door on the left is for dining in only. I found D'Amato seafood to be a casual and laid back place to lunch out. Warm lobster roll was good. Fried scallops and whole belly clam were fried well, but had too much batter for my taste.

Had the scallop + whole clams, and a cod plate. The batter was light and seafood was fresh, what else can you ask for? My only complaint would be that the food seems a bit under-seasoned, but that may be a good thing so we aren't shoveling extra salt in with the fried food. Also I wish the cod came with a more interesting carb rather than plain white toast. But all in all, the seafood itself was better than I've had at some other fan faves. Sadly they were out of catfish and white chowder but the person who took our order gave good recommendations for substitution. The lobster bisque was good but I wish the temp was a little hotter. Overall this spot ranks highly among comparable fried seafood joints. I do appreciate that the place didn't smell at all of fried food or seafood/fishy.
