This is my go to place for my little 71 VW van. I had a terrible experience with another mechanic that were supposed to be experts in vintage VW (in NE Portland). The turn signals on the van weren't working. D&M had to source and ORIGINAL part because the parts made modern don't last more than 3 months. Somehow he found one and it was affordable and now people can tell which way I'm turning. Also he did a lot of upgrades and tube ups even spontaneously fixing a fuel line filter/placement that is known the cause fires. Great place I'll be going back. read more

One word to describe my experience-integrity. Dave charged me $305 for a repair versus another local dealer that has quoted me $1300. He fixed my car and did not just follow the computer diagnostic and replaced parts. A true "old school" mechanic does what he did- a repair! I will always take a daughter's bug back to him and so should you. Great shop and great mechanic. Another great experience today (01/22/2019). Dave is the most honest, efficient and value driven shop I have ever had my vehicle serviced by. Dave at D&M Automotive has been taking good care of my 2002 Passat for the last three years. He came to me HIGHLY recommended by other teachers, and he has over and over proven he was worthy of their recommendations. One of the things I truly appreciate about Dave's service is the total lack of BS. If I need something done, he tells me, explains why, then gives me an accurate estimate. If it doesn't need to be done right away, he's honest about that, too. I've been on the verge of needing a clutch for about 13 months. I took my car in, he drove it and told me I am still OK. Most places would have just replaced the clutch and took my money! He's very busy, so an appointment is needed for routine maintenance However, the times when my "it's going to cost a lot of money" engine light has come on, he's always been able to fit me in. read more

Had an oil leak and Dave took a look - free diagnosis, said it was the main seal on the Vanagon. While picking up my Vanagon, i mentioned something in passing about troubleshooting the headlight switch and he pulled the instrument cluster, jumpered some points and confirmed, "yep, it's the switch that is bad". No charge for the diagnosis of the main seal and no charge to take a few minutes to help with my headlight switch. Very personable service when i wasn't even a customer yet!! Steering started going out and i knew it was something with the rack. Took it in and Dave gave me an estimate and said, "you can go the cheapo junk parts route, but you'll be back in. We warranty the good stuff, and that's what always recommend". He said he'd take a look at the tie rods as well and let me know if they needed fixing. He called me partway thru the day and told me that some part of the tie rodes (outer ones?) were perfect condition, original German stuff and I should keep them... nice! Once the work was done, it cost less than his estimate and the bus steers like butter! I scheduled this appointment on Friday for a Tuesday and he had it back to me in about 5 hours. When I picked up the bus, i mentioned again that the starter may be going out. He gave me a couple tips on the 2 types of starters that I could encounter. He explained in great detail how one would make the job more difficult, but he was betting I had the easy one. When I mentioned the starter seemed pretty easy to pull he said, "it really is a job you can do yourself, save yourself an hour of labor and pull it, if it doesn't need the bushing, you have the easy one.". I cannot recommend him highly enough. Always takes the time during his busy day to give a few tips, kept me well informed, was fair on pricing, and the service was fast. He also works with other local guys that run small shops for specialty work he doesn't do - nice that he is able to connect us to others in the car community! read more

If you have a Volkswagon problem this is your guy. Straight forward no BS guy. I've paid for auto repair twice in my 44 years and both were from him. He called me several times to let me know what was happening. Noticed other problems during the repair and called to discuss. I told him what I thought was wrong and he said that is rare. It's probably something else. It ended up being the problem I though but he investigated other avenues first that would have been much cheaper. Highly recommend. read more

Dave and his team at D & M Automotive Service are outstanding. I found them to be honest, helpful and reliable. I brought my Mom's 1972 VW Camper Bus in because it wasn't running. I was told initially that it needed a new clutch and new breaks aside from the battery. I was told later that the bus didn't need a clutch and I saved about $1,000.00. Dave giggled a little when I told him that "she'd never seen the rain" because she had always been garaged and hardly driven. But, when he allowed us to keep it at his shop until the transport picked her up, he nicely told me that he would put her inside at night. Not only was he incredibly helpful on the repairs, he gave me instructions on how to start her and drive her as it had been 12 years since I had taken her on the road. He referred a classic car insurance company and a transport company. Truly cannot say enough. You RARELY find someone like Dave and his team. When you do, treat them as well as they treat you. It has been a very long time since I have used D & M, since I haven't owned a German car in a long while. I used to go to them for all of my car related things back in my high school days. 17 years later, they are still just as impressive as they were back then. One of the few places I trust to give an honest estimate every time. My step son now drives a VW and he was here visiting and had some issues. On a road trip and passing through Portland, our 91 VW Vanagon needed an oil change and our fuel tank resealed, and we had the pleasure of working with Dave at D&M. He was amazing, got us in quick, very reasonable price and only did what was necessary to save us money. This place knows VW's too, saw a bus and 2 other vans plus several bugs and some newer VW' s as well. Miracle of miracles, customer service isn't dead! Dave made some recommendations on tires as ours were badly worn and made calls to local tire shops and one man alignment shops to get us set up. He was familiar with and recommended the Michelin tires that Gowesty suggests and made sure the tire shop knew what was needed and wouldn't short change us. This was above and beyond what we have ever experienced from a mechanic. HIGHLY recommend these guys and wish we could take them home with us! read more

I have been taking my VWs to Dave at D&M for almost 20 years now, and in all my life, I have never met a more honest mechanic, nor one that bends over backward to keep from spending my money. You want specifics? Where do I start? First example. 2 cars ago, I had an intermittent problem that made my 92 Jetta run like someone had mistaken the gas filler for a vomitorium. It mostly happened on a hard turn, but was hard to reproduce. And after shutting the car off, no problem. Dave had my car for several iterations trying to reproduce and fix, and progressively replaced components and had me try it out-- without having charged me yet-- to see if that fixed it, as he couldn't ever reproduce in the shop or test driving. Eventually I got another job and wasn't on his side of town, and accidentally found the issue on my own when checking something else (a broken wire that only flexed on a really hard right turn, triggering the "limp-home mode" in the computer. So problem solved, but when I sheepishly remembered (a year later) that I had never paid him, I called him up to embarrassingly confess my transgression. Here remembered me, but said I only owed him for the part, since he had failed to ultimately resolve my issue. Seriously. Another was when I mistakenly looked at the idiot light with a dipstick (appropriately) flashing when I started my car, so I immediately shut it off, fearing my oil pump was out. (I checked the oil level, it was full). I had it towed there, he didn't see an issue, but replaced the oil pressure sensor for a nominal price, and told me the pressure looked fine so that was the most likely cause, and he topped all of my fluids in case it was another light. Hmm, another light. So, I got back in and thought about that while driving home. This car does have another light which looks like a genie lamp, which I had failed to notice. "Why is there a genie lamp there? Oh, oil. Crap, that means the other one isn't a dipstick (like I evidently am), it's, uh, a thermometer. Coolant level. Man, I'm stupid." So Dave didn't ridicule me, and didn't take advantage of my temporary stupidity. Classic Dave. I could go on and on with stories of how Dave always treated me right, but this is already too long for most readers, so suffice it to say, he has always fit me in in emergencies (broken CV joint on the road), had quality work at fair prices, used quality parts, employs good mechanics, knows his stuff, is timely on the repairs, and communicates well, always confirming before proceeding with repairs after an estimate, and has earned my unmitigated trust and respect for the last 19 years. I have to twist his arm to get him to even think about doing an unnecessary repair just to make me feel better, and in the end he'd rather lose money than earn it dishonestly or unnecessarily. I would trust my VW to no one else, and could not recommend them more highly. read more

Spectacular does not express how great D&M is! We recently moved and didn't have a local auto mechanic. We were initially very skeptical of D&M's substantially lower rates, but turns out a deal really can be that good!! We took in a Subaru to get some spark plugs replaced. D&M's work was done fast and on time, even with one spark plug breaking on them. I highly recommend D&M and will definitely go to them in the future. read more

After being really crunched with time my car wasn't running well. I brought my VW in early one morning, without even speaking to them. By the time I called at 9am to inform them of the car they had already hooked it up and essentially diagnosed the problem. By mid afternoon the car was fixed, they accepted payment by phone and I picked it up later that evening after they had closed. It was a huge relief to get my car fixed. Life happens, and when everything crashed together this week, it was fantastic having a company take the time to get my car fixed and back to me in less than a day, without an appointment. I had called a service shop the night before and he said he had an opening in two weeks. I know I'll use D&M again if I need car service in the future. read more

I'm not one to normally review anything, but D&M is so good that I felt I had to. Dave goes above and beyond what I've heard about any or experienced at any other mechanic shop. I called and told him the engine codes I'd been experiencing, and he helped me troubleshoot over the phone, told me how to fix it on my own if I was so inclined (and I am) and ordered the few parts that I needed. The parts were available for pickup in less than 24 hours (maybe I got lucky, but regardless it was really fast). I went in, and he checked to make sure the parts were an exact match before selling them to me. Total cost was for the parts alone. AMAZING! I've also gone to him in the past with a few other issues and everything was taken care of within the timeframe provided and even once for less $ than estimated. At the end of March, I took my car to D & M Automotive to get a rear brake job because another shop (Clay's Auto) had told me the previous November that it wouldn't be safe for me to drive my car much longer without having the rear brakes replaced. The quote Clay's Auto gave me was quite high, so I put off doing it until I got my tax return, at which point I called D & M (on the recommendation of a friend of mine who said they were really good). Since D & M was less expensive and I had a phone conversation with Dave that convinced me that he knew his stuff, I decided to have D & M do the brake job for me, instead of Clay's Auto. I'm so glad I did because while I was sitting next door in the coffee shop, waiting for the work to be done, I got a call from Dave who told me that I didn't need a brake job, that I had 10-20K miles left on my brakes, depending on my driving! It's been my experience that any other repair shop would have simply done the brake job, but not this shop! They didn't even charge me for the time they took to check out my car and decide it didn't need any work done! I was so impressed!
