Excellent array of foods with Old World taste. Both vegetarian pot pie and, my favorite, chicken pot pie which is one of my staples if they're not sold out. Prepared by one of the very nice brothers who've run the place for, if I recall correctly, something like thirty years. Challah, babka, and a variety of dried fruits, including my favorite, California apricots that I consider much tastier than the Turkish and other varieties. Well worth a look-see. read more

I called to ask if they had potato latkes and the woman on the phone said they were making them. I took a car service over and was told they were working on them and didn't know when they would be ready. I've been meaning to review for a while, but especially after buying their hamantashen the other day (for Purim) I had to give a shout out. The hamantashen are fantastic - IIRC they make their filling from scratch. Even the poppy ones aren't bad (and that is literally the best thing that one can say about poppy seed hamantashen). I frequently buy frozen spanikopita there as well (they're the only place that seems to carry Kontos brand around here), as well as other things. They always have a smile on their face, and the quality is always good. I just need to get a better sense of their schedule for different specialty baked goods - as an example, I once bought these great syrup-soaked Lebanese donut things, but I haven't seen them since! God I love to spend money on food. Not only food but expensive food. While I am far too modest of means to blow cash on fancy clothes, lavish furniture, or a no-expense-spared vacation I can fairly comfortably blow a wad of cash on fancy grocery items. Also, I am fat and it takes consistent eating to maintain my physique. But damn this is no ordinary gourmet market - cuteness and fanciness aside they stock slices of heaven and goodness on every shelf. The male proprietor was super friendly and offered cheese suggestions. He even cut a slice of rosemary goat cheese for me especially. Also, he smartly (because at this point I would have bought anything he offered up) turned me on to quince and suggested I paired it with my newly acquired cheese. Damn was he right - I have not only followed his adivce but also paired it with brie and even added it to salads (and I mist admit broke off a hunk and ate it straight from the fridge. I have a problem). On that same shopping trip I also purchased my first container of loose-leaf tea. So delicious! I will never go back to tea-bags again (that's what she said). Do I need a $7 tin of sardines? Well, they are from Portugal, where all of the best sardines hang out. Skins on, bone in and they're packed in olive oil. AND they're smoked? Yes, I do need a $7 tin of sardines. Of course, to make proper sardine sandwiches, I'll need a crusty baguette. And I just baked a half dozen, but they disappeared at a party. (My sourdough starter needs another day to recover.) Oh, D'Vine Taste sells baguettes? They've probably been out all day after being dropped off by another bakery. But wait -- they're HOT!? At 4 in the afternoon on a Sunday? They bake them on site throughout the day. Oh my. And only $2.25. Oh, I couldn't wait to get home with these. Their deli case looked tempting, but I was singleminded in my vision of sardine & goat cheese sandwiches. The proprietor was exceptionally friendly. The cash register was stocked with quality dark chocolate treats. Shining challah loaves in the front window. It's not perfect -- the bulk spice bins looked a little dusty and some of the canned goods were covered in a thick layer of must, so that was offputting, but most of the areas with fresh food seemed pretty well cared for. It's a somewhat strange place, but I like it. New York/BK have some great and huge markets full of ethnic specials worthy of a dedicated trip. This place is more of a local version... smaller, somewhat unfocused, but full of unique things not easily found in the neighborhood. I honestly can't say you should go there for something in particular. But I can say you should go there if you are in the nabe and want to explore options not particular, this a place worth visiting. On the fresh side, they have breads, deli selections and an olive bar. But what seems to set them apart is a United Nations approach to pantry stuff. Oils, sauces, etc. read more

They have a great selection of bulk spices and grains, teas and coffees, and have packaged bulk nuts and various kinds of fancy sugars and baking items... olive oils, vinegars, olives. I don't think this place wants to be open anymore. I got there at 10 AM, the door says they open at 9 AM. I asked them if they have any latkes, because it's Hanukkah. He said not yet, it was too early in the day. They make them later. I asked if I should come back at 1pm? He said 2pm would be better. I called then at 2pm and he said they were not made yet. I stopped in again at 4:30pm, on my way to pick up my son from daycare, he said he hadn't had time to make them yet And that I should come back in a little bit, maybe 6~6:30pm. I don't have time to come back. It's 430 in the afternoon during Hanukkah and you haven't had time to make the latkes yet?!?!?!? When are you planning on making them? I don't know, maybe they're actually in the process of closing down, the place was a mess, boxes everywhere, there was no food in any of the display counters. It's a shame, this used to be a good neighborhood spot to go and get food. read more

Right now I'm looking at a photo of taiglach, the Jewish pastry made with dough, nuts, honey, and cherries and served only during the High Holidays season to symbolize a sweet and fruitful New Year. D'Vine Taste makes their own. Amazing! Reminds me of my childhood in Borough Park! They also bake their own challah. Also baguettes. They offer a huge selection of middle eastern specialties, spices, loose leaf teas, a dozen kinds of honey, pastries, breads, many different kinds of olives, oils, prepared foods, myriad bags of coffees in the bean (which you can then have ground to any consistency you favor), cheeses, lox, fresh cream cheese, baba ganoush, hummus to die for... If you've never been here you're missing a remarkable experience. Each time I walk in it's an adventure, because something I've never tried before catches my eye. And the proprietors are the nicest, friendliest, most helpful and welcoming people in the world. They provide information about their selections, give you tastes of things to try, and remember you and greet you as a known and valued customer every time you walk in. D'Vine Taste is a neighborhood treasure, of the kind that used to exist when neighborhoods were neighborhoods. Stumbled upon this place looking for a few bagels. They have THE best bagels and the owners are the sweetest people. They gave me a few free bagels and talked about their shop history. My Earnest and Awkward Ode to D'Vine Please look upon kindly as I gush --- or rather, look away if such demonstrations embarrass. I'm taking efforts to write this without hyperbole, as this place deserves much more than my cheap verbal stylings. Whenever I tell people about D'Vine, I feel weird, happy tears replacing the words I mean to use. The love I feel is inappropriate. When stricken with the lonelys, that NY-brand of estrangement-from-the-world, I need only take a stroll to D'Vine to be gently coaxed into something emotionally engaging. There, I am reminded of what it's like to be coddled, what it's like to be cared for. I may need nothing, my larder might be full, but when I poke through the aisles, the husband and wife are always around, keeping an eye out, offering help. Never too insistent, always inquisitive. If I can't find what I want, they make a suggestion that's welcome, perfect. They're in love with what they do, and this generosity is utterly infectious. The selections in the store have been carefully edited, and there's nothing here that they feel ho-hum about. They're just pleased as punch to converse with you about it. As for the deli, everything is fresh and tastes unmistakably homemade. Homemade, meaning the seasonings have not been blunted; each dish is specific in its flavor. In My Basket: * Torta: Pita-shaped, lightly sweet, from Spain. These flaky crackerbreads have an addictive crumble. They're sprinkled with large sugar crystals and are elegantly, individually wrapped. The snack positively sings with the flavor of anise! * Rosemary Crostini: The fact that D'Vine carries this spares me an unfun trip to the only other place that carries this (Citarella). You think, "$5 for a bag of crackers??" But, oh man, the crostini will ruin you to all else. * Foccacia: Pillowy, not oily. Pebbled with olives, rosemary, salt, and cherry tomatoes. * Onion Bread: Pre-fab but fluffy. I throw these on a hot skillet for an instant pick-me-up. * Labne: Lebanese/Amenian yogurt cheese. Goat or sheepsmilk, erh, I can't remember. * Lamejun (deli): Armenian flat "pizza," topped thinly with ground lamb and tomato sauce. (I actually do wish there was a little more kick to this.) Heated in the ol' toaster oven, it's great with Labne and a sprinkling of Italian parsley. A light spread of chutney is a lovely addition as well. * Za'atar Manakish (deli): Pita-like flatbread dusted with a Middle Eastern herb mix. * Chicken Pot-Pie (deli): Croissant-like butter crust plopped atop delicious, chicken comfort. Otherwise dairy-free --- bonus! * Israeli Couscous (deli): More akin to pasta than couscous, these are BB pellets of curry-flavored goodness. * Fig Cake (deli): Fig paste, mega-studded with pistachios, cranberries, and a coating of sesame. (Made fresh every Saturday, sometimes out front by the window) ... I really could go on and on. I've never had anything bad from the deli-case, and if it's new to you, you can get an ample sampling of anything curious. To hear them trill about raw almond fruit (in season now!), urging you to "Try, try ... It's sooooo GOOD " --- I could pop with happiness. Their generosity is touching, guileless, and unaffected. They're so cute, so nice, and so vulnerable ... my heart is breaking. It makes me want to scoop them up and protect them from the evils of this world. As people and a place of solace, I would be crushed if they left my life. I love D'Vine like I love my parents, but this love is simple and really a lot less complicated. read more

I can't say nice enough things about this place. The family has run this store for as long as I can remember, from uncles to kids, to aunts and sisters, all from Lebanon. Their selection is great, the middle eastern dishes fresh and authentic, and their coffee (shh, I didn't tell you!) is some of the cheapest in the neighborhood. Also, they make amazing fig/nut creations, original from the one of the family members. It's like an amazing nut/fruit bar, held together by sheer force of gravity. Even though we have other high-end stores now like Union Market, I will continue to patronize D'Vine Taste for making Park Slope a friendly and tasty neighborhood. read more

The friendly Lebanese proprietors are definitely a plus to this place, which has awesome baclava, assorted Jewish baked treats, and the only local bulk grain/spice bins I've seen (because who really wants a whole spice-rack container full of tamarin, right?). What you'll find here: over 100 olives, more than 250 cheeses, many different types of halvah, and an extensive bulk spice selection, to name just a few things. One of the few hold out's in a neighborhood that used to be known for its unique, privately owned shops but is now filled with too much of everything and where there's no shortage of chain stores, D'vine Taste has, luckily for us, survived. You will never find anyone but the owners there, as it's family run the quality and service never suffers. Their homemade bread is the best I have found in New York and puts other N.Y. trendy brands like Amy's Bread, to shame. I order in advance and bring it with us on trips because it doesn't get any better and I don't want to be without it as the alternatives are subpar. This is a fantastic spot!! It's a moms and pops shop that carries and makes gourmet international food! They make their own cheeses: aged goat cheese better than the ones I had in Paris, lebanese chankleeshe.. any Lebanese food and desserts you can think of. They also make fresh bread of all origins: Lebanese, German, french. It's pretty incredible. And they have a bunch of spices in the back.. but the best part are the owners. A family that is super friendly and extremely talented. On top of all the foods and cheeses they make they carry a great selection of products: craft beers hard to find including the pale ale 961 Lebanese beer, great olives, tons of spices... I was so happy to find a place where not only can get all the Lebanese food I want, 961 beer, and spices but also gourmet french cheese and bread that is super hard to find! read more

ok, yes it breaks my pocket but some of these foods i can not find at alternative places. like their7 flour nut and fruit bread. costly for me but once again, i can not find anywhere. so at least 3x a year i make that special trip. the proprietor made a special quest for me by baking the bread for me to pick up later that day. WOW. glad i waited. i am about to go right now for my spring feeling foodies day. then he showed me other things in the deli for me to try. this food i ate for the rest of the week. YES! they are in pk slope and im in bed stuy, and they will deliver! i read an earlier review and i will be trying the baguettes that are backed throughout the day and try some cheese, goat or brie perhaps. and the flavored hummus was heavenly tasty. everything about d'vine taste is amazing.. the most gorgeous handmade breads, hamentashen, etc. labane, olives and the gooiest dates that are other worldly. their attention to details and devotion to sourcing clean ingredients without any additives is admirable. their prices are definitely on the high end but so worth what you receive. i always feel greeted with so much warmth, kindness, and care. we love you all, please never leave park slope! read more

The only positive thing about this place was the selection of specialty foods. However, the staff could not have been more unpleasant. The group of people by the refrigerated cases glared at us like we were unwelcome stranger in their home and the cashiers could barely look up from their lunch/magazine to make eye contact. The one girl that rang me up literally only used 1 hand for the entire transaction because she was still eating. HELLO- we were the ONLY customers in the place!
