They are a sister company to their neighbor Aburiya Ibushi, so naturally after eating there, we came here for dessert. Immediately when you walk in, the order/cashier is right there. You have to order your items first and then go find a seat. During a busy night it's packed, so patience is key, as everything is made to order. We opted for a bar/countertop seat and it did not disappoint. We got to talk to the servers and see how everything is made up close. Everything was delicious from the hot and iced teas to dessert. My only suggestion is to remove any of your limited item signage or make a notation on the signage when you run out. Truly one of the highlights of our entire trip. The cocktails and dessert were incredible easily some of the best we had in Hawai'i. We ordered the Matcha Old Fashioned and Sencha Gin Soda, and both were so beautifully balanced. The Matcha Old Fashioned in particular was genuinely one of the best cocktails I've had in my life. Creative and unique without being overly sweet or having any one flavor overpower the others. For dessert, we had the Matcha Anmitsu, and WOW. The matcha flavor actually came through rich and complex while still feeling light and balanced. On top of the food and drinks, the ambiance was amazing and the service was excellent. Everything felt thoughtful and intentional from start to finish. An absolute must if you appreciate matcha, Japanese flavors, or a really well-made cocktail. Cha To Gelato Zen is a Japanese tea shop meets modern simplistic elegance. Opened in Kapahulu in May 2023, I am happy to have been able to experience the changes it's undergone over the years. The owner now serves unique alcoholic tea libations, handmade Japanese sweets inspired gelato flavors and traditional Japanese anmitsu desserts alongside loose leaf tea offerings. The matcha lattes here are amazing but I love their hojicha latte even more with its earthy but well balanced flavors. Hands down my favorite tea shop of all time in Hawaii, and also what inspired my own tea hobby/journey through the years. Counter seats six. Pay at the POS above the gelato display case. There is metered street parking, but being on Kapahulu Avenue...parking can be rough. This afternoon I dined in at the counter because it was hot outside, it must've been higher than 81 defrees F. I requested a double gelato - Matcha and Kinako, which came wiith brown sugar syrup. Excellent. Initial visit, I had a takeaway Soda Float: their June special. It was a white tea with white peach gelato...though it seemed more like a sorbet, but what do I know.... and yuzu syrup. You can customize your own soda float. July's gelato flavor is lychee. Hours are from 200p till 1100p, closed on Wednesdays. Actually, their hours are more differentiated than that, e.g., Fridays and Saturdays are open from 200p till midnight. After dark bar hours start at 600p. Staff is very courteous. Love this cute classy cafe with its authentic Japanese dessert and tea selection unlike anywhere else I've been to in Hawaii. They have an interesting selection of Japanese flavored gelato including miso, black sesame, Kinako, azuki and green tea of course. There was a Yuzu ginger gelato which is more of a sorbet too. You can get traditional accompaniments like shiratama (mochi) and azuki (beans) . I only wish they had more non dairy options for us lactose intolerants. My friend got a Matcha latte which she really liked. Another friend got Kinako gelato with mochi topped with chocolate sauce that paired perfectly! I would take Lactaid to eat this! Teas: -Kabusecha kara which had a bitter umami profile . It started out nice and mellow and turned bitter at the end. Love how they give you the percentage of caffeine. -The Kansaku was a nice mild tea that our server Nana explained must be served at a lower temperature to allow the hand rolled leaves to steep properly . So if you like piping hot tea, don't choose this. -They also have traditional whisked matcha if you want an extra boost of caffeine and antioxidants! Potent! Everything is beautifully served in hand crafted ceramic dishes and presented on wooden boards with a simple flower. You feel like you're in a cozy cafe in Japan. So thankful for restaurants that open just a little later for those of us who are hungry after 8:30. We luckily found parking along kapahulu so tried 2 new places: Aburiya Ibushi (9:30pm) and Cha To Gelato Zen (10:30pm). As we walked back to our car, we walked past Zen and noticed it was packed. And it was a Tuesday night! Great that there was a menu on the door so we could see what the excitement was all about. Appeared to be fancy matcha drinks and desserts with a gelato bar. Decided since we had free parking and the line didn't seem too long, grabbing a gelato to take home shouldn't take long. There was only 1 person working to serve the entire restaurant! She had to make every fancy dessert! Omg. But as I watched her, I realized that she was so sweet to everyone and worked very efficiently. We actually did not wait long at all, as there were only 3 orders ahead of us. When it was our turn, she let us sample the gelato flavors. We ended up buying twice as many scoops because they were all so delicious! Not cheap but tasty! We got the azuki (creamy because it's mixed with marscopone), black sesame, miso (taste kinda like caramel), and seasonal watermelon (only for August). The matcha chocolate was very unique. The matcha was so so delicious, probably the best matcha i've had in the US (considering i'm from socal LOL)! I got the samidori with oat milk after referencing the chart on the menu which was super helpful! Really nice nutty aftertaste and stronggg rich matcha ! After having Chinese food and some beers, we wanted dessert. Usually it's very tough to find parking anywhere on Kapahulu Ave. We were kinda lucky. The green tea is very creamy. There's no pieces of crystallized ice in it. I also tried the Kinako ice cream. It tasted so good. How good? I bought a pint of each to take home. I got the matcha anmitsu that comes with 2 gelato flavors of your choice, 4 pieces of mochi, red bean paste, 2 pieces of strawberries, jelly, brown sugar syrup, and whip cream. Everything we had was sooooo good. The Strawberry Matcha and Hojicha was perfect. Not too sweet and so balanced. The gelato that both my sister and I had was delicious. Met up with a bunch of friends here over the weekend. We all ordered separately and it's a nice small space that you can easily chat and converse as it's homey and quiet. They ask that each customer order only one dish per person (not including drink) as they have only a few workers and to ensure good experience for all customers. The location is the only thing I can say sort of sucks, located off kapahulu about a block and a half away from Safeway there's not that many places to park or walk from. I'd suggest coming down here with a small group of people in one vehicle or taking a nice stroll. The husband and I were still on our fast (no soft drinks, no matcha, coffee, etc). Not to worry we're all just stuffed from the Izakaya, beer, and just say no to Cobra Kai lol. The subdued lighting and natural wood details reminded me of tea shops in Kyoto, yet this was on Kapahulu, but owned and operated by legit Japanese. Polite, professional, and attention to detail... is what separates this spot from the rest. Cha To Gelato Zen offers Japanese inspired Gelato flavors and Tea from Japan. Desserts are the focus here, yet they also have a full bar and homemade cheesecake! We decided to each get two scoops of Gelato paired with suggested Tea. The most difficult part was what flavors should I choose. Not much choices (under ten), however all looked delicious. We chose UJI MATCHA + JAPANESE MILK TEA, and the third order was KINAKO (roasted soybean) + JAPANESE MILK TEA. All paired with Bancha TOMOE FROM SHIZUOKA.The mystery came when I was the first to order the MATCHA, but eh instead received the KINAKO GELATO! All good as it was amazing! In the end, Cha to Gelato Zen was a great choice and for a moment I felt I was back in Japan! We chatted a reunion in Iga, birthplace of Ninjutsu, and our delicious choices, albeit on the pricier side. One even picked up a few slices of homemade Cheesecake for mother. If you need to park your car, you'll generally have to rely on street parking, whether it is along Kapahulu or the various side streets. Cha to Gelato Zen is a premium tea experience. This place feels like such a hidden gem. Located in Kapahulu, parking can be difficult with a few paid spots in front, but be patient, it's worth it. When you enter, they have a very small seating area with a few tables and seats along the bar. They offer different tea beverages, along with alcoholic beverages and ice cream desserts. Everything is made very intentionally and handcrafted to perfection. We ordered matcha lattes. You can see from the signs that they highlight the different matcha that they have and the different flavor profiles. We watched as they whisked our tea and crafted them into lattes. They do have different milk options. They use a sweetener in the matcha latte, so if you'd like it plain, you must request that. We were on a matcha trip for sure and went with the strawberry matcha latte and their strawberry mochi special with a scoop of black sesame gelato. Let me tell you, the matcha was insanely good and the strawberry puree used was so darn fresh. Literally nothing like the oversweet, artificial syrup tasting strawberry matchas you see across the board. Atmosphere - Cute, there's seating maybe for around 6 - 10 people because there is a "bar" set up to get your matcha and teas and then seats by the window. It's so cute! Service - Great! They are friendly and you're able to do a gelato sample. Cost - I believe the flight was around $14. We shared Matcha Anmitsu, Hojicha, and Matcha. It was nice to smell fresh brew of good quality tea. They even smell different. Hojicha and Matcha were light but good quality. You get to choose 2 gelato. Our selection were Kinako and black sesame. They were good. Yes, drinks are made to order. No shortcuts. In our now oversaturated matcha market on Oahu, Cha to Gelato is my favorite place to go for matcha. I've been going ever since they opened. And though the shop has been through a few iterations, the employees have always been kind and consistent with their drinks and gelatos. Cute spot in Kapahulu. Ended up coming here for a night cap ~ dessert after a nice dinner around Ala Moana. We were lucky to find street parking but I believe there's a parking behind the building. We sat down by the bar and per the staff, they serve alcohol only on Thursdays. We ordered the Matcha combo and Green Tea combo for around $45 total for the 2 of us. MATCHA COMBO = Ceremonial matcha and I chose the Samidori, strawberry white chocolate gelato, and it comes with cold brew tea. GREEN TEA COMBO = my boyfriend chose the Gyokoru Chidori which had a high caffeine content, strawberry white chocolate gelato with mochi, azuki bean, and wafer toppings. The vibe was so nice and chill. They were playing instrumentals of disney songs which we love. The shop was full of customers but it was still peaceful with a moderate chatter.
