Cuisine: 7 Service: 6 Decor: 5 Value: 10 Overall: 8 Large storefront on Queens Blvd with lots of take home Chinese food options. Inside this establishment, you'll find a small bakery, a Cantonese bbq meats section, a bunch of dim sum to go, and many choices of cooked dishes sold by the box or pound. On this night, I shopped at the Chinese supermarket connected by a doorway to buy some groceries. Didn't feel like cooking for the next few days, so went buck wild on buying take out. It started with a huge tray of deep fried lobsters weighing in at about 3-4lbs for $25. Then we bought some dim sum, baked goods, and desserts. There was a huge sale on cuttlefish at the BBQ station, from $14 down to $8 a pound that day. I ordered half of a whole cuttlefish, which worked out to be around $9.50 for a big box. Btw, the best item of the night agreed upon by the whole family. About to head home with two big bags of food and one huge tray of lobsters, I expected to pay at least $100 for everything. However, between the discounts and the owner giving us free food for placing a large order, it turned out to be $79 in total. Can't beat the value. With a little traffic, the lobster's batter was not as crispy as I wished, but flavor was excellent and it was fried well. Many of the items were good to very good, so not much complaints on the food. For takeout going forward, this place will be on my list of favorites.

The decor of Da Pai Don looks kind of old and shabby. We have a little concern with its cleanliness. The options are various from BBQ pork, dim sum to Hong Kong style pastries with reasonable prices. However, we didn't try anything since they only take cash.

I'm always so impressed with the sheer number of dishes that are offered here within such a physically small space! I like how they also pack these dishes in smaller containers, so you can pick and choose them to pair with the many types of dim sum they have - some of my favorites are the "sheng jian bao" (super flavorful pan fried pork buns) and shumai, though the shumai are a bit small and not as worth as the baos! The spring rolls are pretty popular as well but I found them to be a bit too salty. They also have many Asian bakery goods (their coconut-covered mochis with peanut filling have a wonderfully soft and chewy texture and are enormous), roast meats, and the classic meal option of rice with 3 sides and a soup! Tip: if you visit around closing time ~7:30-8 pm, they'll likely fill your box to the literal brim with food and there's also usually a bogo offer for whatever dim sum that still remains for that day :) remember to bring cash!!

My favorite is the Fish Congee, but the Sampan Congee is another favorite of mine. In general, all of the congees are consistently good. As for the roast meats, I think their best item is the Soy Sauce Chicken, which is made well. The rest are decent, but I would rather go to Five Loaves & Two Fishes nearby instead. The stuff I would skip here are items like their Wonton Noodle and Rice Rolls. Both are made poorly and not up to par versus the best around. Anyway, I believe this is not a Cantonese roast meat shop that can deliver everything I want. Regardless, I rarely drive by without stopping in to pick up some congee and possibly half a Soy Sauce Chicken.

Shun Wang is one of the 2 joints in Elmhurst that serve authentic, fast-style food nostalgic to most of us from Cantonese households. If you grew up going to Big Wong and Wing Wong (or any place with a clear view of a hanging roast pig on the window), Shun Wang will bring back nostalgia. I'm biased since I spent a good chunk of my childhood eating this kind of food in Chinatown, but Shun Wang's food is just sufficient enough to fill those cravings. Their price points are pretty high for Elmhurst (where most restaurants haven't raised the prices the way Chinatown or Flushing have, luckily), and their food is just OK. I mainly go for the sake of eating something I'm familiar with my whole life, and people I can still speak the language with. My parents go to their Flushing location and said that the quality has fallen since covid.

Service was minimal at best but they just seemed under staffed honestly. And when the server did come by, she was running quickly to and from. The place was not busy when my friends and I were seated. But there was a back room in guessing that had occupants since she was missing in the front seating area. (There was a two person table occupied in the front near us). My party of three over ordered but that was intentional because, any purchase over $100, you get a free lobster and each of us had items we wanted, figured we would doggie bag the leftovers. All in all a great value. The lunch spread had over 7 dishes and we got the free lobster. I was especially happy to see Fried Milk on the menu as an appetizer. They also provide complimentary salted peanuts and pickled radish and carrot slivers. I recommend the snow pea shoots, fried milk, clams with black bean sauce and the Chinese Broccoli with Filet beef. The other dishes like the lobster, noodles and sweet and sour pork were executed well but just not my flavor profile. And with my food allergy, I couldn't try the shrimp with walnuts but it was my friends' birthday so she ordered that for her treat. It looked great! There's complimentary parking if you validate your ticket with a nearby garage, but you need to spend a minimum.

We were famished and only focused on what yummy dishes to order. My wife, son and daughter all contributed their suggestions and we ended up ordering pan fried whole flounder, half of the roast chicken with garlic, filet mignon with Chinese broccoli, fried rice with chicken and salted fish and everyone's favorite dish salt & pepper squid. Once we placed our order and were enjoying the roasted peanuts and free spicy cabbage we realized why everyone had their winter coats on, it felt like they had the AC on and it must have been 55° in the restaurant. I told everyone that once the food arrived things would warm up. Each dish that came out of the kitchen was perfectly cooked and was delicious. The salt & pepper squid with it's minced jalapeños kept us warm enough until the half chicken with garlic and filet mignon and Chinese broccoli came out in rapid succession. The star of the show turned out to be the giant sized pan fried flounder which was not only big but quite scrumptious. Unlike the little scrawny flounder that most other restaurants usually served this was a quite large and very meaty and perfectly cooked. The last dish to come out was a very large plate of chicken fried rice with salted fish. If it were not for the lack of heat, I would have given Chef Wong Bistro 5 stars!

I found the space noticeably larger and more polished than a typical neighborhood Chinese restaurant, with round banquet tables, seafood tanks, spacious dining sections, and a comfortable setup that balances casual dining with traditional Cantonese banquet restaurant energy. It stays open late, which makes it especially convenient for post event meals, group dinners, or nights when most nearby spots are already packed or closing down. The seafood dishes were some of the biggest highlights for me. I tried the lobster specials and a plate of scallion stir fried clams, both of which came out rich in flavor and generous in portion. The lobster fried rice also stood out. A lot of the food leans into classic Cantonese banquet style cooking with bold, savory flavors. The beef chow fun caught my attention for its strong wok hei and slightly charred edges on the noodles, while dishes like the ribs, fish maw soup, Singapore mei fun, and kung pao chicken gave the menu that old school Hong Kong café and seafood restaurant feel. Even the smaller extras and desserts felt oversized and filling, from large portions of ice cream to fresh hot noodle dishes that came out steaming from the kitchen. Service felt quick and efficient, especially considering how large the restaurant is and how late they operate. My food arrived fairly fast, particularly the stir fried dishes and noodles. The restaurant handled both large groups and smaller tables comfortably. The overall flow felt more traditional and fast paced rather than highly polished, with staff focused on keeping tables moving and food coming out consistently. Overall, 698 Cafe works best for late night cravings, group celebrations, or any time you want a proper Cantonese seafood feast without worrying about the clock. I would come back for the lobster fried rice and the wok hei noodles alone. The portions are big, the kitchen moves fast, and the energy stays lively well past midnight.

Pork w/ Thousand Year Egg Congee was one of the better ones around the area. Somewhat thicker than I prefer, but tons of stuff and quite flavorful. I would say that the Shrimp w/ Egg Sauce on Rice was pretty decent too. On the downside, the Fried Fish Fillet w/ Bean Curd was not what I hoped for. While the bean curd was cooked well with plenty of flavor, the fish had a thick batter and over fried, not tender at all. Another underwhelming dish was the bland tasting Dry Sautéed String Bean.
