Other than that, we ordered ginger scallion lobster, Peking duck, fish plate, beef plate, noodle plate, you name it, they have it and it all tastes great! Towards the end, for dessert, they gave sweet soup and watermelons as freebies. For dimsum, we were seated in another room towards the back where the AC was blowing towards us, it was a very unpleasant feeling, so bring a jacket with you for just in case. The food was good, they got everything that I wanted: congee, fried dough, spare ribs, chicken feet and plenty more items. Cart ladies are nice. Back in March, I was here for a Chinese New Year's banquet with a very large group of people, where the head of the group rented out one of the rooms. As it was a banquet, I can't exactly comment on the prices, but the food was very tasty overall, with particularly good seafood. The service was quick, refilling tea whenever necessary. The following were the dishes in order: Shrimp Trio Appetizer: Included Har Gow, Shumai, and Shrimp Egg Rolls. Favorites were the shumai, then the har gow, and then the egg rolls. All the dumpling skins were pretty thin and good quality, with plenty of plump shrimp. Shumai in particular had a wonderful bouncy texture Steamed Pacific Oyster With XO Sauce: One of the unexpected highlights. Excellent XO sauce with a lot of umami and a surprising amount of kick with giant tender oysters beneath. I am not usually the biggest fan of oysters, but this was excellent Roasted Squab: Fun presentation with tasty bony meat. Not dry with a nice crispy edge. One of the meat highlights, outside of it being maybe a little bit salty Snow Pea Leaves With Dried Scallop: Fresh snow peas, but not much flavor from the compoy/dried scallop, with it more providing a gloopier texture. This was only decent Lamb Chop With Fried Garlic: Nicely aromatic, but the lamb could have been a bit more tender. Good overall, but not my favorite Lobster With Fried Sticky Rice: The highlight of the night with plenty of sweet, tender lobster meat, savory fried rice, and some lap cheong/Chinese sausage for extra texture. Easily my favorite, and that opinion was shared by many Stir Fried Satay Beef: Nice tender beef with a mildly sweet sauce. Tasty/one of the better meat courses Clams With Black Bean Sauce: Another highlight. Excellent black bean sauce with enough douchi for flavor, but not too much that it was salty. Clams were fresh and were all open. Sauce wasn't too gloopy either Chinese Broccoli With Preserved Meat: Nice texture with a bit of smoky-sweet flavor from the lap yuk/smoked pork belly and yet more lap cheong. Tasty Eggplant With Chicken and Salted Fish Casserole: Nice mix with tender eggplant, some juicy chicken, and not too much salted fish. Couldn't eat a ton as I was getting full/ concentrating on the dishes I liked a bit more Pork Belly and Preserved Vegetable Casserole: Pork was very flavorful, and the preserved mustard greens/mei cai was tender and too salty. Probably the best of the meat dishes, with a handful of folks taking some home Duck & Mustard Greens Rice Noodle: Nice wok hei with some pretty tender duck and a bit of tiny sourness from the mustard greens. Was running a bit low on stomach room by this point, so I didn't have much. Pumpkin Sago Dessert Soup: A thicker, richer soup with a bit of sweetness, but not too much, as expected. Located in the heart of Flushing, this restaurant is located next to other notable restaurants like Che-Li and even has a 85 degree bakery right across the street. Entering the restaurant and scaling the steps, you are greeting with a very large restaurant filled with circular tables with a large screen on the far wall. My friends and I happened to watch the Fifa world cup here and ppl went wild with every goal/attempted goal. Service is good as long as you are good at getting the attention of staff walking by. I came here for a family lunch on a weekend was able to find a table without much issue and did not need a reservation. Service: the service itself was okay. The restaurant is partitioned up into several different rooms where they will push carts in and out of the rooms themselves. I was seated in some place that almost looked like a back room, but it was still decorated in the dim sum restaurant kind of theme. Service itself was pretty consistent. We didn't have to wait too long to get any of the desired dishes that we wanted. Ambience: I think your typical staple dim sum restaurant ambiance was here. Definitely felt very conversational with family. Was not too quiet or too loud. Food: I don't think that the dim sum here was that good. It didn't wow me as much as I was expecting it to. I initially saw this on one of the Michelin Guide website, and I was expecting a little more out of this place. A variety of dim sum dishes were served on traditional push carts, making the experience feel authentic. My favorite was the warm sweet tofu pudding--it had a silky smooth texture and tasted fresh and authentic. We also ordered the ginger scallion lobster lo mein. The lobster was fresh, but the dish was a bit on the salty side. Pricing was on the higher end, with the lobster charged at $30 each and an additional $18 for the noodles. Asian Jewels Seafood Restaurant 敦城海鮮酒家 is probably the best known Cantonese restaurant in Downtown Flushing, judging from the restaurant's prior recognition in the Michelin Guide, recent recognition in New York Magazine's Grub Street blog, and volume of Yelp reviews compared with nearby competitors. The dim-sum and dinner services here generally rank among the better of the Cantonese restaurants in Downtown Flushing. I can generally recommend Asian Jewels or Emperor Seafood for dim-sum or dinner. However, there have been times when we've been disappointed by the food at Asian Jewels. We stopped visiting Asian Jewels for several years when the dim-sum unexpectedly gave us a food coma once; something we haven't experienced since at Asian Jewels, and never at other dim-sum restaurants. Asian Jewels offers king crab for $45 per pound, but we were sorely disappointed by this offering at a recent dinner. It felt like the restaurant didn't take the time to properly prepare dishes from a 10 lbs+ crab that cost $492. The main dish, King Crab with Garlic, Scallion, and Vermicelli, was poorly executed. There was excessive moisture released by the huge crab, such that the accompanying vermicelli seemed to be drowned in soup. The restaurant could have reduced the liquid to create a tasty sauce for the noodles and crabmeat. Some at our table thought the crab was stringy and rubbery. The King Crab Glutinous Fried Rice was also unremarkable; the rice was harder than expected. That said, the other dishes of the evening were generally on point. Other: It's generally best to visit Chinese restaurants for dim-sum on the weekend, as weekends usually generate enough volume for restaurants to justify offering their widest selections of dim-sum. Only the noodle and rice dishes you order through the menu. The dim sum here is excellent! Har gow is usually a good baseline dish to judge dim sum by and I can tell you the har gow was immaculate. I wish I had the stomach space to eat more of them. All of the shrimp and vegetable dim sum dishes were amazing. They were packed with flavor so you can take some of your vegetarian friends here. A trip to Flushing or Chinatown in the 90s and early 2000s used to entail a mandatory visit to one of the many dim sum palaces. In Flushing the best option used to be Jade Asian or Sweet-n-tart; in Chinatown, I always liked Grand Harmony and never understood the hype around Jing Fong. The general consensus now seems to be that Asian Jewels is the favorite of the few remaining large dim sum establishments. While the cart format is always stressful for a vegetarian, I enjoyed everything I tried here. The tza liang was super crispy, and the ha-cheong (I went pescatarian out of necessity) was perfectly done. The jiu-tsai jiao were also delicious. For sweets, we were too full for masaiga-bau by the time they came around, but the egg custard buns were not too sweet, and retained a nice savory yolk flavor. This dim sum spot is one of the most popular in the area, so I was excited to try it out. I went on a Saturday afternoon (~1:30p) and waited ~30 minutes to get seated. They give each party and number and call them up as seating becomes available. They have lots of the standard fair dim sum like shu mai, taro buns, and har gow. I went with a vegetarian friend though, and he had a lot of trouble with ordering. We asked for an a la carte menu and ordered a few items after stating he was vegetarian and said no meat or seafood. I can understand people with the carts accidentally offering him something with meat, but after explicitly asking and repeating he cannot eat meat or seafood, they brought us 2/3 dishes with meat. One was a tofu skin roll which was stuffed with shrimp, which we asked specifically about the filling It was a bit shocking how difficult it was for them to register what we were saying. In the end, we got a stir fry noodle dish with several vegetables for him. It was unfortunately so bland, lacked sufficient salt, and overly oily. The cart items we got were the veggie spring rolls which were well seasoned, crispy, and not too oily. The mushroom and veggie fill was tasty. We also tried a Chinese broccoli, which was well steamed, light. The oyster sauce (yes, he ate this because the options were so limited) wasn't really transformed much. It looked drizzled on with minimal changes. It was okay but definitely could have been better. The egg tarts were typical. I think they were a tad underdone for my taste but otherwise as expected. Pricing was a bit steep for the items we got. I've been to other dim sum spots in queens for far less (like in great neck) and the quality was just as good, had minimal waits, and was more affordable. I'd say this is a decent one given the location and the valet parking lot right next door. In this regard it's much better than New Mulan for example where you have to wait a long time for valet. As we pushed the heavy ornate doors we were greeted by the smells of yummy dim sum delights. We were seated almost immediately and then treated to an array of delectable delights by the ladies pushing the dim sum carts. I apologize for the lack of photos. We were so ravenous I forgot to take photos . We loved the shrimp rice rolls and plate of snow pea shoots which had to be ordered off the menu. We also had a bowl of century egg porridge and crispy dough bites wrapped in rice rolls. Service was astoundingly excellent. Everyone super polite and patient. It is usually a good sign when a restaurant has a bunch of people waiting for a table during the weekend lunch period. In the mood for dim sum, my friend and I joined the queue. The wait was long, but we passed the time by walking around Flushing. However, the wait ended up being a bit faster than what was quoted, and we missed our number being called. We thought we were going to have to wait all over again, but the very kind hostess got us on the next available table. We were at a shared table, which was a large round table with a couple on one side and us on the other side. There was plenty of space between us, so it kind of felt like we had our own tables. Inside the bustling restaurant, a handful of dim sum carts skillfully navigate their way around. The carts come around at a fairly decent pace, but some come around more often than others. If what you want is not on the cart, just keep waiting for the next one to come around unless it has run out for the day. I am a creature of habit and always have to have har gow and siu mai, but there is a lot of delicious dishes to choose from, like the pan-fried stuffed eggplant. Wide variety of dishes, excellently prepared, chaotic banquet table type scene of the type I grew up with in San Francisco, in other words, perfect. Going early is a really good idea if you don't want to wait 30-90 minutes for a table, but that's pretty on point for any good dim sum place on a Saturday. I was excited to try dim sum at Asian Jewel as they are a Michelin Recommended establishment. I parked nearby at a private lot, but I did see that they had a rather tight valet lot right next to the restaurant. Upon entering, I was greeted and immediately given an assigned number for my large party of 9. They seemed very efficient and got us seated once the majority of us were gathered, I had no idea how large this restaurant actually was until I was guided through many large dining rooms that were all connected to one another. There was lotsa hustle and bustle going on but not in a chaotic way. I had a large back table which turned out to be good and bad. When the carts came around with assorted small bites it was hard to get their attention and by the time we were shown what was available a lot of the food came to us either cold or just lukewarm. I only recall a few small dishes where the food was hot. The taste was good but nothing stand out. Also I really like my food hot and it's not ideal when your table is at the back of the dining room. The ambiance here is nice but I did not find it very different from other Chinese restaurants in the area serving similar dishes. We ended the funeral here with a delicious banquet to spend more time with family and friends and were not disappointed. Food was seasoned just right and came out hot and fast. We were seated in a tight corner against the wall even though other tables were open, which felt a bit uncomfortable. I've been here for dim sum and evening dinners. This place is so amazing for its terrific food. It is often busy and the locals know where to go for great food. For dim sum, the carts are out and about with freshly steamed dishes. The cart ladies are so efficient. They will show you what they have and then push additional dishes on you to try. They are also motherly, urging you in Chinese to eat the food while the food is hot and not let it sit. They are sharp eyed, looking for diners who express interest in the dishes in their carts. It is a crowded, noisy, and wonderful place. You eat, look for dishes that catch your eye, and then eat some more. You also get to watch all the other diners enjoying food with their family and friends. For dinner, it was always done family style. We usually order lobster and shrimp dishes, as it is a seafood restaurant. However, all their other dishes are really good, so it is hard to say what is a favorite dish. I came here on a Sunday around 10:45am and thankfully didn't have to wait for a table (when we left, there were probably 30 people waiting to get seated). The decor is more contemporary at this restaurant compared to something like Emperor Seafood which is more traditional. There's a good amount of tables available, and we're seated in the side room closer to the bathrooms. I had all of my favorite dim sum dishes and they all tasted great, but unfortunately I did develop a stomachache (didn't eat anything else that morning besides dim sum). Came here on two occasions and sparingly took pictures since I was relatively unimpressed with the majority of the food items here. First time I came here was for new years eve dinner. Ordered a wide variety of items, with the best item being the honey walnut shrimp item. The bill at the end of the night came out to $92 so felt a little bit of sticker shock for what I had that night. Came here a couple of days later since I was curious about dim sum here and again was just underwhelmed. Some of the items tasted stale, but was mostly unimpressed by how bland all the items tasted. It satiate my curiosity about this place since I've heard great things about the dim sum here. We've had dinner here twice recently and both visits were pretty solid in food and service. The staff were super attentive with our group of 13. All of the dishes we ordered were tasty. Large shrimps, juicy chicken, fresh vegetables and fish. Asian Jewels has become a regular for family bday dinners. Bonus in Flushing, they have valet parking. read more
