The shrimp rice crepe wrapped me in its warm embrace while the fresh shrimp was almost crunchy, steamed just right. The chicken feet will always be one of my favorite dishes, they marinate it well and it's usually very flavorful. We stopped by Ocean Bay Restaurant for Sunday dim sum. The menu has all the typical dim sum favorites, and everything we ordered was satisfying. My favorite was the shrimp cheung fun--it's one of my go-to dim sum dishes, and this one did not disappoint. We also ordered from the menu the pan-fried noodles with beef, which came in a surprisingly large portion and was very tasty. Service was quick, and the food arrived without much wait. One thing to note is that the dining room feels a bit tight, especially with the traditional dim sum carts moving around the aisles. My family has been coming here since its heyday as Ping's and have pretty much been on the wary side since the rebrand. Since we have relatives who live on opposite ends of Queens, this location has always been a good halfway point. Two things: 1. This place is truly exhausting during dim sum on the weekends. People will try to get on top of you (and I don't mean that in the best way). 2. Dim sum selection is intentionally small and service is slow to provoke you to order the expensive entree dishes. The dim sum is nothing to write home about at all and is just sufficient enough for any dim sum craving. There's no consistency with the quality, as well as the quantity. The same also goes for the large dishes, though I've only eaten dinner here once or twice since the new management, and there wasn't anything memorable. Service is generally okay, but the employees are definitely overworked during the weekend lunch hours. The teens in our family raved about the salted egg yolk fried crab. We have dined here a handful of times since they've opened in the last few years and noticed their service gets better and better with every visit. The wait staff are really on top of it. They keep a mindful eye and also offer a delightful dessert service at the end of the meal, fresh cut fruit with sweet tong sui soup. This spot used to be "Ping's", which shut down a few years ago. It's slightly different in the inside. There is a section that was converted into to two banquet rooms for private functions. The food is still wonderful. We loved everything. The sauce for the seafood pan fried noodles could have used a little bit more seasoning. The service is great. The noodle basket was, thankfully, not very hard that I was able to pick-up the egg noodles. I always enjoyed the floral shaped cut carrots. Sautéed Roasted Chicken The chicken was hard particularly the skin as I felt it was overcooked. Cantonese-Style Ginger Scallion Lobster The protein of the lobster was cooked very well that it was easily able to be removed from the lobster's shell. This place has been my family's go to places for dimsum for years and we were back today. We came around 12:30 PM and the line to wait for a table was crazy. They give you a number to call when your table is ready. The wait was only 20 minutes but there wasn't much room to wait so everyone was crowded around the front, so I suggest getting there earlier closer to 10 AM. We ordered our usual beef chow fun, steamed ribs, shrimp rice rolls, shu mai, chicken feet, and beef stomach. Everything from the steamers were super good, hot, and flavorful. Crazy crowded during weekend dim sum hours for sub-par dim sum. Ever since the old Ping's Restaurant closed down a few years ago and rebranded, I was always curious as to what would be done with the space --- in comes Ocean Bay Seafood Restaurant to try to carry on the dim sum tradition here. Unfortunately, the dim sum was a pretty big let down. First, I read that there is a small parking lot for this restaurant up on Goldsmith St and that you only have to pay a few dollars to park there. If that's the case, then we completely missed it. To put it lightly, parking is a nightmare in this area, especially during prime dining hours for dim sum. Luckily, we found a parking spot only 1 block away on Queens Blvd within 15 minutes, but patrons can easily circle for 30 minutes with no luck. In addition, Goldsmith St is super tight to the point of having 2 way traffic is impossible, but somehow it's a 2 way street. We arrived at about 12pm on a hot Saturday afternoon and didn't get seated until about 12:50ish. Waiting was not the issue because I will wait all day to try food if I have to (ok maybe not all day, but you get my drift), but the wait area WAS a huge issue. The restaurant isn't all that big and with all of the people waiting in the cramped space to escape the heat, it absolutely became a fire hazard. When we were finally seated, food came over fast and furious as the dim sum carts circled around the tight restaurant like an F1 race. They pretty much have the usual dim sum fare and we were able to try their pork dumplings, chicken feet, beef and shrimp rice rolls, steamed meatballs, steamed spare ribs, sticky rice, egg tarts and coconut jelly. Also, since we were in the celebratory mood - like VERY celebratory mood, we also ordered a shredded chicken pan fried noodle, flat rice noodle with chicken AND 2 Cantonese-style lobsters for good measure. I mentioned the disappointment in the food and the negative feedback was mostly centered around the dim sum and the fact that some of the saucy dim sum dishes - like the steamed spare ribs and chicken feet had a "slimy" texture to them. The sauce was a bit too gelatinous and thick for my liking. The pork dumplings were OK as were the rice rolls. The egg tarts, which they served the larger variety, were excellent. As for my favorite dim sum dessert, coconut jelly, it was rather flavorless compared to other restaurants. The pan fried noodle was decent, but once again a bit too "slimy". The 2 lobsters were good, albeit a bit smaller than we anticipated. Overall, our experience was meh. The parking in the area is tough and the wait was expected. However, they have a little bit of work to do on the flavor of the dim sum and need to do something about the sauce on the dishes. Every time we go here, something annoys us. Last outing for family CNY dinner there was the ribeye dish for 33 which had barely .5 lbs of meat/rest was mushroom. For vegetables on some of the dishes they went with the cheapest celery. Standouts were snow pea shoots and roasted chicken. They also messed up our fish order, gave us deep fried instead of sautéed. On the weekend, their kitchen does not open till 11 am. I got there when they opened at 10 am on a Saturday, and there was no wait. It quickly filled up by 10:30am. There was a huge crowd of people waiting when I left at noon. I have eaten a lot of dim sum and this place surprisingly good. The shu mai is actually quite good. The Dan tat is very smooth and tasty but you can tell they use lots of butter. I liked the beef fried hor fun, but wish there were more noodles. The snow pea shoot is actually very good too. I liked the rice noodle with shrimp as well. The atmosphere is typical. Chaotic. The bathrooms were decent. There is an also a small back section that is nice for sequestering kids. This place used to be Ping's and was our go-to dim sum place for the neighborhood. Glad to see that the location has finally reopened and we are welcoming ocean bay seafood restaurant with open arms. Dim Sum wise - the quality is great even for takeout and all the rice skin for the dumplings and rice rolls is stretchy, fresh, warm, and nicely chewy. The meat inside was plump for the har gow and shrimp crepes, and not overcooked. Shrimp chive dumplings were a fave, and have the egg- flavored wrapper and lots and lots of chvies for a deep chive flavor and prominent textural component. Also- one cool thing they have here that's newer to mainland Chinese cuisine is rolled up chun fun noodles that are cut width-wise so you get little bundles of it, stir fried. Look for it in the specials section - they serve it with seafood. I forgot the name of it in Chinese but it's something you won't find everywhere just yet and is my Chinese parents' go-to dish when coming here. Came here for afternoon dim-sum on a week day; place wasn't too packed and was quick to be seated. There are the wheeled dim-sum carts with the typical fan favorites; nothing out of the ordinary. The Shrimp rice roll tasted okay, but needed to be special ordered from the waiter; I like the water-chestnut cake (liked the bouncy texture); ordered a special pan fried chicken noodle- the meat tasted a bit strange- don't think it's fresh.
