A restaurant that has both Cantonese AND Szechuan dishes?! How did I only just find out about this place now??? It's very unassuming from the outside, but decently decorated inside and quite spacious (there's a second floor too) which is probably why I've walked past this place so so many times and never stepped foot in. We were definitely lured by the $30 for twin lobsters sign outside. Twin Lobsters: as usual, this was my favorite hahah. Good flavor, not too salty, but could've used more scallions for me. A must order for this price, you really can't get it anywhere, especially with how meaty the lobsters were. Spicy Spare Ribs: oooh soo pretty, these come in the bird cage so, very very appealing. It was super crispy and had good flavor, but some of the pieces weren't very meaty at all for this price. Cold Glass Noodle Jelly: I've missed this dish so much! The sauce is more liquidy than usual, but the texture of the noodle jelly was perfection and the sauce was more sour than spicy, so could've used more spice. I was introducing this dish to a group who'd never had this before and majority enjoyed yayy Enoki Mushroom and Japanese Tofu Casserole: the sauce tasted like roast duck to me so this was extra umami. It's a smaller portion and also not served in a casserole pot but the tofu was fried beautifully, and combined with the sauce, this dish was devoured almost immediately. A must order! Spiced Beef Tendon: it says tendon but this was actually the beef shin cut, served warm in their sauce. It was good, but not what I was expecting though! Diced Chicken Eggplant and Salted Fish Casserole: I loved the chunkier pieces of chicken in this dish, but as usual, I'm always looking for more salted fish flavor, but I appreciated that it wasn't as oily as other places Sauteed Dried Squid: definitely quite pricey for the amount of squid you get. It's more like a vegetable stir fry so the squid was minimal, but it's a tasty stir fry though

I had a late flight and arrived at Flushing well past midnight but was hungry so went out to hunt for some late night eats. This place was opened until 3AM! It has an unassuming entrance (but maybe I'm just used to bug doors in socal restaurants) and was very nicely decorated inside. The ambiance was surprisingly fun and there were older people still inside eating and chatting. I was seated immediately because it was late and ordered the dandan noodles. It came out relatively quickly and the portion size was pretty big! It was spicy and delicious. If i'm craving late night eats again, I'd definitely come back

Very ethnically Asian, spot very cute and open late night. The servers barely spoke English but very accommodating and attentive. They had plenty of soup options and tea. We weren't too sure of what was in the dishes so we sort of made up our own. Chicken corn soup with a side noodles and shrimp. Very filling.

Cuisine: 8 Service: 8 Decor: 9 Value: 7 Overall: 8 One of the best places to host a large group dinner in all of Flushing. Most people see the first floor, which has beautiful decor, but miss the seasonal floral designs of the upstairs portion of the restaurant, with its private rooms. When you reach the second floor, it's quite stunning. I have now done a handful of events here with groups ranging from 12 to 30, and they all were wonderful experiences. Regarding the cuisine, they serve both Cantonese and Szechuan food. I'm usually scared of restaurants of this type because they don't specialize and can't do either very well. Luckily, not the case here. Below are lists of dishes and my opinion of its quality. Excellent: - Eight Treasure Duck (must preorder) - Braised Pork Belly w/ Preserved Vegetables - Sautéed Dry Squid - Regular & Spicy Spare Rib - House Special Frozen Crab - Fish Filet w/ Pepper - Mapo Tofu Very Good: - Oyster in Garlic Sauce / Black Bean Sauce - Rich Beef Golden Soup - Diced Chicken & Eggplant w/ Salted Fish Casserole - Dry Pot Cauliflower - Sautéed Fish Fillet - Peking Pork Chop - Salt & Pepper Pork Chop - Chongqing Style Chicken - Scrambled Egg w/ Shrimp Good: - Hakka Boiled Fish - Honey Walnut Jumbo Shrimp - Water Spinach w/ Bean Curd & Pepper - Sliced Pork Belly - Mouth Watering Chicken - Roast Squab - String Beans w/ Minced Pork - Sautéed Pea Sprouts w/ Garlic - Ginger & Scallion Lobster - Angus Beef w/ Asparagus - Sautéed Frog w/ Leeks - Braised Fish & Tofu Casserole Average: - Szechuan Spicy & Numbing Beef - Eggplant w/ Garlic Sauce - Singapore Rice Noodle - Pan Fried Noodles w/ Beef - Shrimp Fried Rice Skip: - Dan Dan Noodle - Spare Rib w/ Plum Sauce Other than the nice decor and delicious food, the service here is always friendly and helpful. Though sometimes a little absent due to being overwhelmed, the waiters and waitresses always tries their best to be attentive to our needs. I have no real complaints. I have been to this restaurant for lunch, dinner, and even late night snacks well past midnight. They close at 3:00am. It always hits the spot and remains a very underrated restaurant in Flushing. Give this place a shot! You won't regret it.

Chongqing Styled Chunk Chicken, Enoki Mushroom and Japanese Tofu Casserole, and Water Spinach with Bean Curd and Pepper
    Billy C.

We were a group of four looking for some family style canto food that wasn't hotpot or KBBQ. We heard about 698 Cafe and decided to give it a try. We ordered six dishes. Shrimp with Walnut, Salt and Pepper Fish Fillet, Enoki Mushroom & Japanese Tofu Casserole, Chongqing Styled Chunk Chicken, Water Spinach with Bean Curd, and Spare Ribs in Beijing (Peking) Style. The shrimp and walnut is a classic dish that was well made but not the best we've had. Saucy and delicious with fresh shrimp. Walnuts were not stale and lightly glazed. The salt and pepper fish was my personal favorite. The batter was seasoned well. The fillets were light and fluffy. Each bite made me want more. The enoki mushroom & Japanese tofu casserole was piping hot and flavorful. Wish there was more enoki though! The Chongqing styled chunk chicken was spicy and addicting. 698 cafe uses pieces of chicken with bones and chicken skin as well. Be mindful when chomping to avoid bones! The water spinach was delicious! Fresh and flavorful. Cooked extremely well. The spare ribs were great. The meat was juicy and the sauce was a perfect balance of sweet and sour. A great pairing with rice! Overall, the food was delicious. Service was slow. Feels like an old timer restaurant, saw a bunch of older men leave their table of food to use another table to play cards, haha. The type of place to drink beer and hang out all night long.

As the former site of one of my favorite Sichuan spots (#1), I'm so glad it's found new life in the form of 698 Cafe. It is also a Sichuan-based establishment, with an added emphasis on Cantonese cuisine, which is less plentiful in Flushing. Overall, I've been happy with my experiences here and hope to try more items. The modernized decor gives me the same vibes that casinos often have: no one can tell what time it is because of how muted the decor is. This might be deliberate, since they're open late (#2) each night. There is plenty of room for groups of all sizes and there is even a separate room for karaoke and private dinner parties. Their Chinese name ("新東溢豐") is more akin to "New Eastern Abundance" which is fitting for their menu, which is chalk full of variety, complete with photos and descriptions. The presentation is also on point, with splashy platters just perfect for a family style dining session. Prices are going to be slightly higher than the average place, but thankfully the food also follows suit. The Canto selections are pretty decent, but I think the Sichuan side is a bit more robust. Their Chongqing chicken is plenty spicy and the hanging pork belly with sliced cucumber is a nice effect for the social media food porn. The mapo tofu is extremely underrated and the dry hot pot is a nice and sizable portion. The poached beef in hot oil is also very tasty and their seafood selection is excellent, particularly their lobster and steamed fish dishes. Surprisingly much of the staff is both Canto + Mando friendly, which is not overly common in these parts. They've done a good job of keeping us fed and friendly throughout each visit. While I don't think they produce their best food during their later hours, I feel good knowing I can still come here without having to worry about the crowds to indulge in some serious multi-regional Chinese variety. __________ (#1) R.I.P. I was just looking for a quick bite, standing outside 698 Cafe thinking "why not?" From the outside, it seemed casual -- but the interior was surprisingly elevated. It was quiet since it was mid-afternoon, but what happened next? Not quiet at all in my memory. I ordered the Grandma's pork belly with preserved vegetables and shrimp with walnuts -- two dishes I grew up on. The pork belly? Deep, traditional flavor cooked to perfection. Took me right back to my grandma's kitchen. And the shrimp with walnuts -- I've had that dish more times than I can count, but not like this. At 35, this was the best version I've ever had. Even the broccoli was perfect -- buttery, crisp, and cared for. They say you remember feelings more than moments -- and in that moment, I felt like a kid again. No stress, no worries. Just pure, present joy. This was more than a meal -- it's a memory in the making.

Pork belly with preserved vegetables.. young chow Fried Rice

We were going to have a really late lunch. It was too early for people to have dinner so we were given a big table even if it was for two. Really nice staff, pot of tea on the table for us. We were given a good amount of time to look through the menu. We wanted to splurge a lil since we've been eating healthy for a few days...so I ordered braised pork with preserved vegetables, shrimp with walnuts, and young chow fried rice. Everything was pretty good. I don't eat Chinese food that often but I'd say this was one of the better Cantonese restaurants; the dishes are a lil pricier but the quality is better. Considering I pay $20lb for raw shrimp.. $31 isn't too bad for the shrimp and walnuts. We were able to have 2 meals from this dish. We had enough for dinner later that night since the shrimp are jumbo sized. Definitely one of the best we've had.. the pork belly was good but a lil salty but it was yummy with a plain white rice. The young chow fried rice was delicious as well. Lots of wok flavor and lots of shrimp. L said it was the best he's had. He finished it all. My brother took my mom to 698 cafe just 30 mins before us but thought the food was just okay since he ordered from the lunch special menu. Our food was a lot tastier than what he got since he was looking for food with very lil sodium for my mom... So we're definitely coming back here again and trying more items. Bringing my mom back here to get the fish...

We had passed by this restaurant multiple times heading to other restaurants we felt had better food, and never thought to give it a try. We were pleasantly surprised how tasty and fast the food came out. The waitresses were so friendly too! We would definitely eat here again when we are in the area!

Some of the best Szechuan food you'll find in NYC! Flushing is the real Chinatown, not Manhattan anymore. I ONLY go to Flushing for Chinese food. This place is the best in its class. The waiter was excellent! They stay open late for all of you night owls like myself. Modern, pleasant decor, not typical of most places in Flushing. This is never a problem for me as I'm interested in the food!! But a nice added bonus!

String beans with minced pork (干扁四季豆)
    Matthew H.

Came by for dinner on a Friday with a friend - it was decently busy as we ate with a good number of tables coming and going. We had: Hakka boiled fish (客家水煮魚) : massive portion size! Also, really spicy. Very generous helping of fish pieces and I liked a lot of the other ingredients in the soup as well (the glassy noodles were my favourite). Probably best to eat with larger groups, I think it was a bit beyond the ability of the two of us to make a big dent (and we ended up taking home the vast majority of it lol) String beans with minced pork (干扁四季豆): generally a good choice. The string beans were a bit less cooked than I'd prefer (I love when they're slightly softer but still crunchy, these were on the harder side), but still not bad. Not a lot of minced pork which was a bit disappointing. Also not very spicy, was a good contrast to the other dishes we ordered Chongqing styled chunk chicken (回味辣子雞): so spicy :0 the chicken was very yummy and juicy (although more pieces were unexpectedly bony so be careful of biting down suddenly). As expected the sheer amount of peppers made each bite more and more numbing - could be a pro or con, depending on your spicy tolerance. Would recommend this dish for sure. Portion sizes were rather large - we ended up with SO much leftovers to take home (a common ending for family-style Chinese restaurants when you come in small groups I suppose). In that vein the high-ish price point was actually somewhat reasonable. But, there are a lot of good Chinese restaurants in the area that are better and/or cheaper, so I'm not sure if I'll be back in the near future.

Starting off, the numbing szechuan chicken was my least favorite of the dishes - the pieces of chicken were really tiny and there were a lot of peppercorns. I wish they made the pieces of chicken slightly larger as it was irritating to slowly pick it out towards the end of finishing it. Now, what went well were the stone pot with the fish. Normally not a huge fan of fish, so if I can enjoy eating fish a place has done well in preparing it. The soup was really flavorful and everyone at my table enjoyed it. The sweet and sour pork was also nice. The breading was crispy and the sauce had a nice tangy flavor to it and the texture was interestingly satisfying. The grilled beef ribs and bao buns were one of my favorite. The beef rib was very tender and went well with the buns and condiments that were provided.

Rating closer to a 3.5. We stumbled upon this place and it's not bad! Very empty inside even though…read morethere are lines surrounding the block due to the tea shops. Pleasantly surprised by how flavorful the food was. The garlic string beans are my favorite. Very garlicky, blistered well and flavorful. The pork was pretty good too. I think the boiled fish doesn't taste as fresh as I wanted. The fish had a bit of a muddy flavor which threw it off a bit. They also keep the bones in there so it was kind of hard to eat. The place has a lot of authentic dishes that might scare off non-Chinese people. There are trotters, intestines, offal, rabbit, etc on the menu so if you're looking for American style Chinese food, you should go elsewhere. Overall not bad. Service was standard, ambiance was casual.

First time dining here even though I've walked by here for years. Came here on a Wednesday and…read morethere was a wait. Pro about this is that it's a good sign that the food should be good. Con about this is, I didn't realize there would be a wait so I didn't bother making reservations on Google so we had to wait 40 mins. No seats so we decided to go hang out at tangram while we waited and waiting for her text/call. The little one has been hyped up so much from mukbangs that she's constantly craving crawfish. I mentioned to her that a couple places in Flushing sell crawfish Chinese style and she wanted to try. Did a search on Yelp and saw someone recently raved about the crawfish here. Every order of crawfish comes in 2lbs and we ordered the spiced flavored one. This crawfish gets an A++. Little one loved the flavors and freshness. So tasty. Not only that, but these were probably the biggest crawfish we've ever seen! Even the claws had meat! We also loved how they chopped off the top of the head to removed the "filter". We also ordered a couple small dishes to try. For cold apps we ordered the pigs ear and okra. We love the crunchy texture of the pigs ear and the more we ate it, the more addicting it got to eat. Okra was also a bit. For the skewers, we ordered the lamb beef and intestine. Honestly the lamb and beef skewers were probably the worst ones we've ever tried. It was a struggle to finish them. The meat was tasteless, hard and overcooked. No fat ratio at all. The pig intestines were perfectly cooked. Love when it's crispy. We love finding a place that's been around that's actually a huge hit for us. We will be back. If you spend $120, they will gift you a huge carafe of passion fruit tea.

Food: The food is delicious here! This is a small chain with locations in Flushing, Brooklyn, and…read moreeven Edison, New Jersey. Hot Space is known for their grilled fish served in a large pan (kept heated with a flame underneath) with various toppings that you can choose from including enoki mushrooms, cabbage, veggies, fish tofu, soft tofu, kelp, lotus root, black fungus, rice cakes, ramen noodles, and glass noodles. They have options for the flavor of the broth/grilled fish including mala spicy, spicy tofu (comes with soft tofu), garlic, tomato, and more. Their menu also includes appetizers and other entrees including crawfish and shrimp. For appetizers, we tried the grilled fish tofu skewer, cold tofu with preserved duck egg, and grilled eggplant with garlic. I would recommend all of these appetizers. If you enjoy fish, this place is worth trying especially because you can customize it with toppings that you like. When you spend $120, you can get a free tower of a sparkling fruit drink (it was just okay so don't go out of your way to spend $120 just to get the drink). Free dessert , herbal jelly in milk, comes at the end of the meal, but this wasn't too enjoyable. Service: Staff members were very friendly and helpful. They came around to refill drinks frequently. Ambiance: The restaurant is a good size because it has two floors. Good for both small and large groups. Seating is comfortable. Overall, I would recommend this place!

Service was minimal at best but they just seemed under staffed honestly. And when the server did come by, she was running quickly to and from. The place was not busy when my friends and I were seated. But there was a back room in guessing that had occupants since she was missing in the front seating area. (There was a two person table occupied in the front near us). My party of three over ordered but that was intentional because, any purchase over $100, you get a free lobster and each of us had items we wanted, figured we would doggie bag the leftovers. All in all a great value. The lunch spread had over 7 dishes and we got the free lobster. I was especially happy to see Fried Milk on the menu as an appetizer. They also provide complimentary salted peanuts and pickled radish and carrot slivers. I recommend the snow pea shoots, fried milk, clams with black bean sauce and the Chinese Broccoli with Filet beef. The other dishes like the lobster, noodles and sweet and sour pork were executed well but just not my flavor profile. And with my food allergy, I couldn't try the shrimp with walnuts but it was my friends' birthday so she ordered that for her treat. It looked great! There's complimentary parking if you validate your ticket with a nearby garage, but you need to spend a minimum.

My family and I had dinner at Chef Wongs Bistro on New Years Day and we were very glad we did. The…read morerestaurant was fairly full and the strangest thing almost all the patrons were wearing their wool hats and coats while seated at their tables. We were famished and only focused on what yummy dishes to order. My wife, son and daughter all contributed their suggestions and we ended up ordering pan fried whole flounder, half of the roast chicken with garlic, filet mignon with Chinese broccoli, fried rice with chicken and salted fish and everyone's favorite dish salt & pepper squid. Once we placed our order and were enjoying the roasted peanuts and free spicy cabbage we realized why everyone had their winter coats on, it felt like they had the AC on and it must have been 55° in the restaurant. I told everyone that once the food arrived things would warm up. Each dish that came out of the kitchen was perfectly cooked and was delicious. The salt & pepper squid with it's minced jalapeños kept us warm enough until the half chicken with garlic and filet mignon and Chinese broccoli came out in rapid succession. The star of the show turned out to be the giant sized pan fried flounder which was not only big but quite scrumptious. Unlike the little scrawny flounder that most other restaurants usually served this was a quite large and very meaty and perfectly cooked. The last dish to come out was a very large plate of chicken fried rice with salted fish. If it were not for the lack of heat, I would have given Chef Wong Bistro 5 stars!
