The pastries that they had were also not as exotic as I thought they would be (scones, croissants, and a couple little pies) I tried a vanilla latte and a chocolate chip scone. A cute, immaculate shop with perfect looking desserts of every variety. In regards to measures for Covid, they do limit it to 2 people at a time in the shop. There is hand sanitizer at the door and there is plexiglass separating the desserts and employees from the customers. The woman helping me also had a mask on and gloves. I stopped by in the late afternoon, so I am certain I missed some other goodies. However, I still saw some crispy salted caramel cookies, small bags of Madeleines dipped in chocolate, beautiful chocolates, and lovely pastries on display in the cases. I also saw the famous stollen. Another goodie on the list for next time. After a good amount of time, I selected a lovely flourless chocolate cake and two raspberry mousse bombs. Both were fantastic. The cake was just beautiful. Simply, but perfectly decorated. The flavor was just as smooth as the beautiful icing covering it. Its rich chocolate flavor the perfect reward for a long week. The mousse bombs looked too perfect to touch. When you finally force yourself to break that shell you are rewarded with a light, delicate filling. This bakery is truly special! I stoped in to purchase a fruit tart for my wife's 35 birthday. I learned that whole tarts are only available by pre-order, but the owner was able to chat with the pastry chef and take my order to pick up a few hours later. A lovely local gem in Old Saybrook! You can't go wrong here--between the quality and uniqueness. Dagmar puts her whole heart into this operation, and it shows! I asked her if she could make this special Dutch cake for my grandmother's birthday, and she was the only bakery in the area that took the time to try out the recipe. It came out so good! My grandmother (who is from Holland) said, "it tastes like home". That only backs up my view that: Dagmar's is a taste of Europe on the shoreline! The lattes are also the best in town, in my opinion. What a treat for my first visit to Old Saybrook! It is tucked into a small location around the corner in the parking lot that also serves Denali. So get your outdoor gear and then come and enjoy yourself. We made a mixed box of apricot scone, poppyseed walnut cake, apple strudel, apricot-chocolate Bundt cake and a bunch of small cookies. My mom commented on how it wasn't the usual cupcakes. We love cupcakes but it was really nice to try something different. Everything was tasty. They also have tea, coffee, and a bunch of frozen and packaged items. Off to eat some now. Mmmmmm! read more

This was my first visit to the store and I tried a chocolate covered Elisen-Lebkuchen and a cappuccino. My first and only bite of the Elisen-Lebkuchen started with the meek flavor of chocolate. That vague sensation was quickly and decidedly overwhelmed by what tasted like a mouthful of cinnamon and not much else. As I took one more look at the cookie I noticed some type of hair stuck in the chocolate. Now the cappuccino, it was so hot that my first and only sip scalded tongue forcing me to spit it out all over my passenger seat. They had many other food options that looked appetizing but I'm not sure I'll be back anytime soon. read more

Don't rely on Dagmars. I placed an order for a Buche Noel 2 weeks ago for an early pickup on Christmas Eve. They took my credit card number as part of the order. I arrived at 11:30am on 12/24 to find that they had my reservation clearly marked "early pickup" but they had not yet made it. They asked me to wait 15 minutes while they made one for me. I thought I ordered a carefully created Christmas cake - especially for the $44 price tag (for a medium) - but apparently this was not the case. Plenty of excuses by the owner saying they had worked all night. Also they had already charged my card which seems wrong in itself. I asked for a credit which they gave me but I've learned my lesson. Don't bother calling Dagmars ahead - it means nothing. To be honest, we kept getting the Buche Noel from Dagmars every year as a tradition, but no one really liked it. We will be fine (and $44 richer!) omitting this as part of our Christmas celebration in the future. read more

A friend of mine suggested Dagmar's for their scones and we noticed they served lunch with a small menu of available sandwiches and soup. After asking for the Chicken Salad Sandwich I was told that they didn't have any...nor did they have any tuna or egg salad that was posted on the daily menu board...a BLT or Tomato & Mozzarella sandwich was all that was available...we went for the BLT...for $7.95 I was expecting a sandwich...not an appetizer. Throw in some chips or perhaps, since this is a bakery...for $7.95 throw in a cookie. Served on a plate with nothing else....the bakery items looked good but over priced. Probably not the best decision on our part to go to a bakery for lunch..Service could have been better...as we sat there waiting for our sandwich 3 people walked out as no one was there to serve them...they were in the back I guess making our sandwiches. read more

I've come for lattes and pastries for years as well as birthday cakes and have always been a big fan. Faced with the prospect of hosting a party for 100 people this year, I was really not sure how to proceed. Karen was super helpful at the onset and Dagmar closer to the time, from choosing the type of cake, to determining how much, to decorating. I can't say enough about the pleasure of working with them but especially the end product, a gorgeous and delicious Strawberry Cake (3 actually!). Many guests went back for seconds. The 90th birthday celebrant, my mother, had the biggest piece and squirreled away the last ones to take home with her. We received many comments on how wonderful the cake was and inquiries on where it came from: Dagmar's Desserts! I feel truly blessed to have this business nearby for our celebrations. P. S.
