I have enjoyed Dagwood's for nearly 60 years. As an MSU student, I thought it was a very "classy" joint back then: Michelob on tap and beer mugs that had a unique handle; a curve connected at the bottom with a gap of about half an inch at the top. Big time, baby!! In those 58 years, the exterior has not changed except for a patio on the back side. The men's room is really small; much like Texaz Grill in Phoenix!! No door on the toilet stall to this day. Seating area has same setup; booths and tables appear to have been replaced over those years. Dagwood's offers 10 or more draft beers today. The classic MIchelob is absent. I had ham and bean soup, cheeseburger and fries. The soup is homemade and just what I wanted. Burgers are all smash-style; cooked to order and still juicy. To me, the fries are the hit; hand-cut fresh potatoes fried to order and great! Saturday afternoon was a little spotty but they got the job done. after reading several other shady reviews concerning greed, i decided to tell my tale. i paid with my debit card & next day reviewing my account, realized they had charged me an extra $40...i had a burger & a beer. of course, it was an "accident" although i had bad vibes from the bartender from the get-go. the owner left $40. cash for me behind the bar as a "refund", when i picked it up i was told by the same bartender "i know where to find you." i won't be going back ever & if YOU do, make sure to count your money...seems there's a trend! shame on you Dagwood's!!! read more

I can remember the first time I was here back in 1992 (yes, I'm old), I don't think I ever had a non-fast burger before, but I can tell you without a doubt this burger single handedly changed the meaning of my existence. Fresh meat, flat top grill that has been well seasoned over decades (I'm assuming it's not new) of use. I think one of the reasons I've been so thrilled with the recent smash burger uprising is because they remind me so much of these style of pub burgers. Coming back 30 years later, I can't say that much has changed. The burger was still delicious, the service was still solid and if you love dive bars and old classic pubs as much as I do, the decor was solid and pleasing. You get what you see here, there is nothing fancy, but everything is great. If you love burgers (or wings which are also yummy but drumstick style) this is an absolutely underrated spot to get a basic bacon cheeseburger and fries. As you can imagine, they have a good selection of beer and liquor along with tradtional pop. Can't wait to come back and get another burger soon. read more

I went with a party of 3 on a Sunday afternoon, and it was quite lively inside, you step through the door and the light instantly changes. Pretty good crowd for 3 pm on a Sunday. Service was good, waitress was nice. I got two Bacon Cheeseburgers with a sides of fries. And the burgers were very good, the bread was really nice and with the price so cheap it's easy to get more than one. The onions on the burger were very thick, so beware of that. Overall will be coming back regularly for the cheap burgers and atmosphere. read more

I was coming to Dagwoods before everyone who works here now was born lol. Can't help myself that every time I come back to Lansing I have to have an olive burger with cheese to celebrate. Dagwoods has always been one of my favs since I was a young man. Nice to return to an old friend it fells like an old hug. Awesome old school beer and a shot local dive bar. Beers under $8, burgers are excellent and dressed appropriately with a big thick slice of onion. The full order of amazing fries is enough for two people. Service is prompt and friendly. Decor is mid-century bar complete with beer signs and an old wooden phone booth. We arrived at 6:30 PM on a Friday night in December and it WAS PACKED! Apparently it is quite the place to be and had tons of regulars. A kind couple allowed us to sit with them. We ordered the burger special (burger with cheese added, fries and a drink - either a soft drink or a 12 oz draft beer). it was amazing and a HOOT! Service was fabulous. Food was fabulous. As far as the ambiance goes at Dagwood's, I like the old style pub vibe and it's really cool that they have an old phone book in there! It is a bit cramped for space so you just gotta hope you're not too close to someone super loud and obnoxious like I was! My ears are still ringing from the noise haha. As far as service goes, the wait staff is very attentive and will never let your cup go empty which I appreciate! They're also nice and quick with the food but not too quick! Lastly, as far as food goes, I had something simple...their hand cut fries. They were a little undercooked but still had a great flavor and I loved that the skin of the potato was still on them! My friend got chips and salsa and you could tell the chips were homemade...absolutely fantastic and the salsa was delicious! DO NOT COME HERE ON THE WRONG DAY... Let me start off by saying that I have been a returning customer for the past couple of years, and that I have had great experiences eating at this establishment. However, this was not the case for my last endeavor. Simply sitting down resulted in my friends being treated as an annoyance and an inconvenience. Once our waitress arrived at our table, she THREW the menus at us, and then when she brought us our drinks, she SPILLED them all over the menus. We overlooked this but realized we had sat at a smaller table than what the size of our party required, and so we relayed that information to our waitress. We were then BLESSED with her reply being "Oh my f**king god, ok, go... do it... go!" As our remaining member joined us, he was treated with the same disrespect. As we now waited for our food, another couple sat in a booth beside us. The waitress stayed very consistent and met them with the same bitterness that we received. The couple was distraught. It was their date, and they, too, were just as confused as we were. Now for a curveball. It seems the waitress truly picks her favorites. A seven-party decided to show up after this entire scene, and she was giddy as all. The times she served them with a smile and attention were 10-fold than the mere peasants that we were in her eyes. Well, at least we were able to play some Pull-Tabs in the meantime...and win! Woohoo, we won a combined $90 with a single $75 Pull-Tab. The joy was IMMEDIATELY snuffed out when we received our cashout....there was no $75. No biggie. We then brought it to the astounding waitress that had been an absolute angel the whole night.......she rolled her eyes and brought the manager over with a very tangy "You deal with this" before leaving it to the manager. They did not believe us. The manager turned around after our inquiry, stating, "To be honest, sir, our waitresses make enough not to steal from you."....We never stated that; we just wanted our earnings. Lo and behold, it was accidentally thrown away instead of being scanned. The manager apologized and handed our winnings back. I truly feel bad for the other waitresses who have ACTUALLY been amazing in our past experiences (Even the girl on the left of your Facebook background picture). They simply dont deserve such a low-hanging fruit of a waitress that served us... It's not fair to them. This place has always been our go-to gold mine for the absolute BEST burgers in East Lansing (Great job, Chef!). It aches my soul to have to say this about our favorite spot, but this simply cannot go unheard. We entered with empty bellies and full of respect. We have been regulars of Dagwood's for quite some time...we can always depend on them for comforting and tasty and fresh bar food favs, amazing staff, and friendly community members. Dagwood's is a quintessential Rust Belt neighborhood bar-- but features an insanely cheap and insanely good burger-- in an age of burgers that are either too expensive or improbably large. I have not deviated from the burger-fries-and-beer menu as nothing else looks terribly compelling, but I'm still sticking with my five stars. A modest but serviceable beer list that allows you to either opt for a Midwestern Yellow Beer or something perhaps more exotic like a Midwestern IPA. Wait times either for a table or food can be quite long on a busy night, but the servers are great. There is a patio outside that's great in the summer and is enclosed and heated in the winter (suitable probably into the 20s°F). read more

I arrived just as the MSU/Duke game started and secured the last small table. This is a dive bar with a long history, well reviewed and popular. I will not be back as my experience left much to be desired. My waitress was charming and helpful, but I had to ask about the $8 special-burger, beer and fries. She should have led with that given its popularity, so I ordered the quarter pound burger and the handful of very soggy fries, in a basket. I don't remember tasting the burger, the fries were almost inedible, but the Budweiser on tap was surprisingly delicious. I watched the first half of the game, noticed I couldn't see the floor, but by the looks of the dirty, dingy ceiling tiles, I didn't want to. I didn't take a photo as it was not worthy of insulting my phone. I remember thinking I should have gone to Hopcat for some real food and cleaner conditions, so next time for sure! read more

Condiments were free, and it was 50 cents to add lettuce, tomato, mayo (all 3) So, was it a restaurant quality, Kobe beef, quarter pounder with premium cheese? Of course not. It's cheap burger. But it tasted good. I would surely go back next time I'm in town. Fries were so so and Bud/Miller are definitely not my thing. I'd skip the $6.50 meal and just go for a burger. And add an app - wings were delicious and the mushroom fries were 8/10. Oh, and our server was super! No rays of sunshine, but super efficient, and quick. We didn't have to say it and she got it. I came in tonight, October 18 to order a to go order for me wife and my father-in-law. I ordered my burgers with olive sauce on the side along with pickle onion, tomato, and lettuce. The bartender he had glasses a hat on screwed the order completely. There were no sides of olive sauce, lettuce, tomato, or onion on the burgers. I didn't realize this until I delivered this to my father-in-law. He hasn't had Dagwoods for months can't tell you about the disappointment. It's the bartender hat and glasses. He also screwed up the orders of the people to the Tight & left of me as I sat at the bar waiting for my food. Will I go back? I would say that Dagwoods has the best bar food in the city of Lansing. This is a true sports bar vibe with MSU memorabilia written all over it that is not in East Lansing, but in a somewhat gritty part of the Eastside in a good way. I have gotten their veggie burger with their fries and typically would get a Bells Two Hearted with it. Their fries are the best, except for one flaw which is they don't season them. If they changed that, it would get a five star. read more

I LOVE this place. I moved to Lansing 4 years ago and have been there often. It's a personal place that is populated by the neighbors and working class on any given day. The food is bar food, but it's above average. It's fast and more than affordable. I love the atmosphere. It is most always packed, and deserves to be. Get a Dagwood burger, a pitcher of beer, some wings and enjoy a romp through time when customers were valued and appreciated. Outstanding! A+ read more

Not what it used to be. Burgers are average for the price. $5 onion rings are a joke. Frozen and about 1/3 of an order at any other restaurant. Feta dip is good, but such a small amount for the price. My burger came out as a single hamburger, when I orders a double cheeseburger. In the end, my wife and I were not happy. We are usually happy just getting out on a Friday night. Heads up, they charge extra for a tall vodka and tonic. I guess there is a tonic shortage. read more

Boy oh Boy there's a lot of great things I discovered about Dagwood's. Being from MSU I unfortunately overlooked this place during my time there, and I now I realize that I've been missing out. On a recent Sparty weekend visit I decided to check them out to watch the football game and ended up liking them so much that I went back the next day and the next day. I promise to never ignore or neglect Dagwood's again, there's lots of goodies to report here: - Came here on a MSU Football game night. It was packed yet plenty of TVs at all angles for your viewing pleasure. Unfortunately even though Spartan fans showed up to watch the game Sparty didn't show up to play and lost by 24pts. Yay! Oh well, plenty of beers here on tap and bottled - let's have another one. - The waitress was really nice and attentive - even though she was super busy and hustling around I was able to flag her down every time I needed something and she came through - great job. All the waitstaff here were great and help each other out. - I was interested in the Veggie Burger but asked for her feedback and she enthusiastically recommended the Bacon Cheeseburger - ok sounds good - let's do it with lettuce tomato, mayo, and onion w/ a side of fries and some fried dill pickle spears w/ ranch. - Food came out in timely fashion - especially with it being a full house. I also got a 12oz mug of draft beer - something w/ Orange Blood in it - and it was tasty good. - Oh my those fried pickle spears were really good. And the ranch here tastes like it should be - very flavorful. Trust me, some places do screw that up but not Dagwood's. - Another Wow Factor - the Bacon Cheeseburger was da bomb! The edges of the burger patty were crispy from the griddle and I got an onion slice as thick as the patty (see pic) which made me happy since I love onions. It's probably one of the best Bacon Cheeseburgers I've ever had - nothing fu-fu about it - just straight forward medium sized that tasted great like it came from a well seasoned griddle. - The fries were just fabulous. Fresh cut here and you can tell - and piping hot. I need to try the chili cheese fries next time. - Another Wow Factor - the bill. I got a cold beer, bacon cheeseburger w/ fries, pickle spears w/ ranch for $15.50! Holy Moly now that's what I call "DMAGA" - Dagwood's Making America Great Again. Great prices, tasty food, and bang for the buck too - I was more than satisfied. Dagwood's made such a great impression on me that I went back there the next day to watch some NFL w/ a couple of friends and went for that Bacon Cheeseburger - which is now my go-to - and it was as good as the night before (that's called consistency). My friends got the Fish Basket (very good), the Reuben (very, very good) w/ fries (awesome again), and that Feta Cheese Dip (not too shabby). I got a Reuben to go - and oh yeah - it was pretty straight forward sandwich that hit the spot. I do recommend. This place doesn't need my review, it's been around long before I was born and will probably outlast me. You're either gonna come here or your not. Dagwoods is usually busy and can sometimes be difficult to find a seat. When you find one, it will be comfortable. Every seat in the house has a back so you can lean back and relax. The kitchen is right there for you to observe if you'd like. I think it's entertaining. The food is extremely low priced and is good for the price. Not the best food in the world but def a great value. The people who work at dagwoods are pros who work fast and don't mess around. They're right on top of things in this fast paced environment and keep under control. Know what you want to order so you don't slow them down. read more

Been going here for the past 30+ years and I've had good and not so good. I will say, they have wonderful fried mushrooms and pickles. Handcut fries I had high hopes for, but they need to rinse and cold bath these before frying. Also, I find that most of the fried food now has a look and taste like they don't change their fry oil that often. I would start here and change out that oil daily since they fry so much of their food. All-in-all, it's bar food and you should only expect this. I went to MSU and never knew about this gem, we found it waiting football traffic to die down 10 years after I graduated. Now we go on a yearly basis when we make our way up to state. I was looking for a good burger while in town. After reading the reviews, I decided to give the Dagwood a chance. Know this... it's not a sports bar, it a bar. It's dimly lit and a little cramped. BUT, the burgers are amazing! The onion rings were good, the waitstaff were quick and friendly, and food came out of the kitchen quickly. 10/10 will definitely be back again next time I'm in town. read more
