French fries, with Friday special. The perfect texture and consistency
    Kendra L.

Dairy King is a must stop location. They have any kind of food you can think of on their menu, and they have ice cream as well, let's not get them confused with Dairy Queen. I enjoy going to Dairy King, they have two locations one in Trenton and the other is right down RT50 on Breese. However I have come to know this location very well, as the staff is always so friendly and their service is always quick. They have a drive through, dine-in(with outdoor seating), as well as the option to call in orders for pick up. This is a family owned business, it often reminds me of the old TV show cheers, where everybody knows your name. The food is always fresh and tasty. They offer daily specials throughout the week, and also offer happy hour. I love their cheeseburger with fries and a side of Nacho cheese typically but on occasion I will venture out and try somthing different. Today I got a philly cheese steak, which was to die for.... no pun intended, with fries, which are crispy and full of taste, the inside is a nice, warm full of burst potato when you bite into it. Yum. The inside of the Resturant brings me back to my childhood, you order at the counter then they call your name when your food is ready. There is ample seating on the inside and out. It is pretty roomy. The staff is very helpful here, and always remember you when you come back, which is nice. I forgot to add one thing Dairy King is known for is their Ski Slushies, you can pick any flavor to put in there, just like any slushie. You can even do a different soda of choice as well. However ski is a soda bottled and made right down the road in Breese at Excell, and it is so so good. It's a citrus soda, but made with real sugar cane. When I order mine I do half frozen/half regular ski. It is the perfect consistency. The soda doesn't get watered down with ice, and your slushie isn't all ice after drinking a few sips. Plus it lasts awhile. Another one of my personal favorites is Blueberry ski. All in all I highly recommend Dairy King to anyone, don't let a long line scare you, they move quick, and remember they're nothing like dairy queen. If you get lost, just look for the penguin trash cans. Or the little penguin signs, then you've made it. Oh and one more important note. They do take cards, but they charge a card fee.

Ski - local drink. Like a Mountain Dew.

Stopped in another local joint! Right at 11 and the dual drive through was packed!! And I was one of those lucky ones to line up early. They had an extensive menu with plenty to choose from. Prices were very good since this is a small local place. Ordered a double cheese burger and a local favorite "Ski" for the beverage. Not a big soda drinker but had to try it. Much like a Mountain Dew but bottled locally and is the favorite in this area. Both were very good. I actually got my lunch very quickly and they ran it out to my car since it was ready before the persons in front of me, so I was able to get out of line and enjoy lunch without waiting. Did not go inside as I was heading to the airport. I'll stop back in when in the area next time. Good food... good mood!

A perfect weather day... for a penguin!

A locally home-grown joint that you won't find anywhere else. Love the penguin out front. We stopped in at lunch time and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Menu is very large so right away I knew that there must be a lot of frozen and pre-made foods but took a chance and was not disappointed. Wanting something light, we went for soup and chili, some fried pickles and soft drinks. They admitted the chili wasn't home-made but it was still very tasty as was the chicken noodle soup. Pickles were OK - maybe a little over-cooked. Lastly, the place is very neat and tidy! I'd definitely stop again next time I'm in the area.

Ok, this was our 1st time and it won't be our last. We went to Trenton to pick out some lights and decided to stop at The King to see what all the fuss is about. The menu is extensive and a bit overwhelming so we stuck with the basic Double Cheeseburger, Fries, Onion Rings, A Banana Malt and Lemonade. These were the best burgers around. JummHot and Juicy. The fries were crispy as well as the onion rings. The Lemonade was Real Lemonade!! The Banana Malt was so good make sure you get it with Real Bananas. There are 2 locations one in Trenton and one in Breese. This place was so good even the Hubby said he would drive the hour to eat here again... We have a Winner!!

This is a great burger and championship fries. A definite stop if you're in the neighborhood and worth a trip from St. Louis.

Staff immediately seat you with a menu with the usuals for Illinois farm country AND there's always a few fish items of the menu (fish fry every Friday in German Catholic communities!). I stopped I. For lunch and had an amazing Reuben on toasted rye with house chips for $8.95! Perfect size, the meat wasn't fatty, and a surfeit of chips! My companion had their pulled pork on brioche; the sauce was was the right mix of tangy and sweet, and the pork was tender and juicy! (Lots of places have dry pork dressed up with a ton of sauce.) Enough space for a small to medium office lunch with quick and attentive staff, great prices, and a slow small town vibe--this place is worth the back country drive.

My husband and I booked a cabin at Hidden Lake Winery for our anniversary at the recommendation of…read morefamily who raved about their experiences there (although it had been a few years since they'd been). After reading some concerning negative reviews, especially with a very rainy weekend forecast, we worried about a lackluster atmosphere and being confined indoors. We even agreed to cut our losses on the cabin and leave early if the experience was truly as bad as some reviews suggested. Thankfully, our stay was the complete opposite--a delightful surprise that exceeded all of our expectations! The cabin was spotless, cozy, and beautifully maintained, with no bugs inside (despite plenty outside, as you'd expect with any cabin in the woods). The jacuzzi was clean and relaxing, and we enjoyed complimentary breakfasts of bottled water, orange juice, and delicious muffins. We were even charmed by playful and curious baby foxes outside the cabin one morning. One of which came right up and peeked through our door window! The winery itself was a highlight. The food and wine were phenomenal. Quick and good service as well. We didn't do a wine flight, but requested to taste different wines at the bar before buying a glass and there was no deposit charge for the glasses as some reviews mentioned. There was plenty of covered outdoor seating that let us enjoy the views and atmosphere, despite the rain. Indoors, the upstairs offered board games and stunning views. Bartender Jeremy and owner Steve were friendly, attentive, and went above and beyond to accommodate us with anything we needed, and even offered some great conversation! Steve's 3 dogs often accompany him to the winery and they are so gentle and sweet! You'll also find pictures of them throughout the inside of the winery! While heavy rain prevented us from hiking around the lake or to the waterfall, we had an amazing weekend. We can only imagine how amazing of an atmosphere it must be on a sunny day with live music! We left feeling grateful for such a wonderful anniversary and eager to return. I truly don't understand the negative reviews. Give this place a shot!

Unfortunately, all of the wines were slightly less than just OK. Definitely don't recommend any of them which was disappointing. The biggest negative was the fact they charge a five dollar glass fee for every glass to ensure you return it when you do a tasting. I've never seen this at a winery before. Frankly, most vineyards encourage you to take their glass so they have the enduring advertising. The highlight of our visit was the patriotic theme and sincere appreciation for our service members. Thank you for that.

As seen in my Savvi review, we were in need of safety pins in the middle of rural America and Casey's was the only store we found. I parked to the side of the building and ran in to see if they had a travel sewing kit for sale. Brad was still stressing in the car. They had nothing with safety pins for sale. We were totally out of luck. Or were we? Not here in Aviston, IL. One of the ladies looked at me and said, "Someone having a wardrobe malfunction?" I told her yes, not a bad as Janet Jackson's, but we were having problems and didn't want to leave our friends wedding. As luck would have it, her daughter happened to be in the store too. This lady who had never seen or meet me before sent her little girl home to get a bag of safety pins out of her sewing box. While the little girl was gone, I went back in to get cups of ice so we could fix drinks out of our cooler. I was so happy they were helping me get safety pins I gave them a $1 for ice. The other worker looked at me and laughed and said, "Ice don't cost that much." here's your change. I told her to keep it and they refused. The little girl (I'd say she was 10-11) returned on her bike with a bag of safety pins of all sizes. I went back to Brad in the car and began to use all the skills I learned doing costumes in theater. Pants were pinned well enough to give him through a reception as long as he didn't get out on the dance floor. When I went back inside to return the unused pins, (I did keep a few extra in my pocket just in case we had a relapse) I presented the young girl with a $10 bill for her kindness running home on her bike. She, like her mother said, "No thank you, I am just paying it forward and you do the same." Wow, that was amazing to hear from a 10 year old. I told her I believe in paying forward and I still wanted her to have the $. I suggested doing something nice for someone else with it, she gave in and took the $. On the way home, we stopped again to say thanks and buy some sweet treats for the ride home. They say there is nothing like southern hospitality, but I think the country folks are even better.
