I would be shocked if there's anyone who has lived in Collinsville for more than five years that cannot say that Burt's chuckwagon isn't a hallmark of the town, as much as the ketchup bottle! I lived here in the late 90s and remember when it was on the corner of Clay Street, and I was drugged in by a couple of friends from high school, saying that they had the best food, I'm such a picky eater, and I didn't think I would be able to find anything at a place called chuckwagon, that I'd be willing to eat... oh, but I was wrong! They have something for every pallet and the food is all amazing! When I move back 14 years ago and saw it was no longer on the corner of Clay Street in 159, I literally felt a pain in my heart and I lived here for over a year before I mentioned to someone else how I was upset that Bert's was no longer around and how I couldn't believe it shut down, just to find out it hadn't, they had just moved a main street!! I was there with him 48 hours and oh my goodness how I had missed the awesome that is the Chuckwagon! Whenever I am asked what we should do for dinner by people who are in town visiting and they can't make up their mind on what cuisine they want, I tell him we're going to Bert's Chuckwagon, watch them, wrinkled their nose, tell them too late. I've made up my mind and that's where we're taking them and I get them there and I watch their eyes widen, as they try the food! Bert's is the best open secret Collinsville has to offer and if ever you find yourself, not sure where you wanna eat or have guests in town who can't decide between Italian/Mexican/chinese or just a good old burger, make the executive decision and tell them you're taking them to Bert's. Make sure that you emphasize the chuckwagon, watch their faces as they come to terms with what you just said and try and talk you out of it, but stay firm, stay quiet about what they're getting ready to walk into, and take them to Bert's! read more

One of our favorite places in Collinsville! We have been going here since their last location which I loved but the newer location is way bigger and more convenient. We are always greeted by someone quickly and service is always outstanding! I'm obsessed with their super tacos but that's because I prefer a flour Shell. If you like a corn shell better stick with the regular size. I didn't get one this trip but their mini pulled pork sandwiches are also a great choice! Every single time I walk in I'm greeted by name. They get to know you they know their community. They are so kind on Valentine's Day. Dan was giving out yellow roses to women and children that just needed a smile. The food is amazing. It's always got great flavor. It's always fresh. The bread pudding is something new in the last year or so and it's perfectly portioned into muffin sizes and there's always a super amazing twist to it and every week it's something different but it's only one flavor a week a until it's gone... so don't wait! If you love Coca-Cola, you'll love hanging out and looking at all the memorabilia around this place it's just iconic if you are from the area, you know Bert's Chuckwagon is absolutely the place to be. You will not find a better place to eat. I've been eating here since I could eat solid foods, roughly 40 years. Roger has been greeting people from the kitchen that whole time too. He remembers EVERYONE. When I was a kid my dad told me that when the restaurant was at the old location, a blimp pilot needed a place to land and Roger went outside and guided him down into the bank parking lot across the street and fed him tacos. Went to check out Burt's Chuckwagon based on a colleagues' recommendation. We really wanted to like this place based on the reviews and we knew one of the guys working there; unfortunately, it just didn't deliver. We all got the same entrée, the Super Mex Dinner which comes with a taco, enchilada, burrito, tostada, frijoles, and Spanish rice for $10.29 (fountain drink extra). It just didn't deliver. Nothing was particularly bad, but nothing was particularly good either. As a bonus, we each also received a free BBQ pork slider; this too was very dry and stringy. People obviously like this place as it has 4.5 stars, so I just don't know what happened. Maybe we'll try again and hopefully see what others are seeing, but it certainly didn't work for us this time. read more

Bert's definitely has its own thing going on. The restaurant is behind a little coffee shop in what feels like a renovated high school gym covered in old Coca-Cola signs. I loved the atmosphere and it fits perfectly with their menu. We've tried a few things. The tacos are super simple and super cheap. The cheese burgers have a nice flavor. The BBQ pork sandwich is dripping in sauce. Almost all the food here reminds of a high school cafeteria. It's nothing fancy, it's nostalgic, it's cheap and it gets the job done well. Yesterday I had the special. It was a pulled bbq chicken sandwich with onion rings on top.... And oh my! It was easily one of the best chicken sandwiches I have ever had. The meat was cooked perfectly and was put on a simple but fresh white bun. The onion rings added an amazing crunch. From here on out I'll be sure to pick up whatever the special is. The service is small town friendly. The place is clearly beloved by locals. Bert's is a really fun stop. Everything is so affordable I usually end up buying a whole bunch of stuff to try! read more

Everyone who lives in Collinsville is well-acquainted with Bert's, as they've been around seemingly forever. Food is better than what you'd get from a typical diner, and they will almost always get my business over the fast-food joints. Plus the price is a heck of a lot cheaper!Nice, funky atmosphere, and super laid back and friendly staff. If the owner is working ( and he usually is) he might entertain you with one of his awful jokes . This really breaks my heart. Years ago, when Bert's was in its original location, you couldn't even find a spot to park, it was so busy. Like, crazy busy all day. The lines went out the door, because it was just that good and worth the wait. EVERYONE was behind the decision to move it to its current location on Main Street. You mean, ample parking and more tables and more room in general?! YES YES YES. Now? It's a mere shell of what it was back then. I ordered the burrito dinner that comes with beans and rice. Standard Tex-Mex fare, but that's what Bert's is known for. Oh, I'm sorry. What they USED to be known for. My "burrito" was hardly burrito-esque. It was a bean and cheese wrap (see the offensive photo I've included). No meat. Just beans and cheese. Great. I can't even pick the limp d*ck up. The woman who filled my cup didn't even look up from her phone to say "thank you" after putting the tray on the counter. She was texting at work, so it must have been important. I'm leaving my half eaten food and going elsewhere. If I wasn't starving when I walked in (and so excited about coming here for the first time in years), I would have left it and walked out right away. What a disappointment. read more

Best: vanilla cokes Full disclosure... I've been coming to this place my whole life and love it. Love the owner. Love the food. I miss the old little A frame hole it the wall it used to be in. I grew up on the bbq, vanilla or cherry cokes (my mom always had the chocolate Coke), and super tacos. And when they added fried ice cream sometime in the late 80s/90s I was hooked on that too. Those are the go tos, although I have to say my memory of the super taco shells is that they were better when I was growing up. My recommendation is to get a jr. BBQ, which is slider size, so you can still get a taco or something else to try. And of course a true vanilla or cherry coke. Long live Bert's! read more

We found this place on Yelp while traveling to Chicago. It's about 3 miles off the highway in downtown Collinsville and shares a storefront with a coffee place. Bert"s is a no- frills kind of place but the food is very solid and the prices were very reasonable. The staff was exceptionally nice. The Bbq and Mexican offerings seem to be most popular. We will definitely go back on our next trip through. read more

So sad to see this place close down - it will be re-opening at a new location but this place was a Collinsville, IL icon. Literally, every kind of comfort food you could think of... burgers, mexican food, ice cream, ribs, chicken, fried goodies.... You name it! The tacos are the best and the price is ALWAYS right. A family of four ate for 14 dollars! My great uncle's family runs this place and they truly take pride in what they do and have raised a family inside this place. It's so sad that they were bought out by the Illinois Rte. 159 expansion project. They will reopen at 101 E. Main in September, go visit them! read more

Growing up in Collinsville I always seem to take for granted Bert's Chuckwagon, until we almost lost it due to the 159 expansion. Luckily we were saved when Bert's relocated about 2 blocks away on Main Street in downtown Collinsville. First off, don't expect fine dining here this is good food done simple & right. Bert's has a little bit of everything however the best thing to get here is the Mexican, especially if you go on a Monday night to take advantage of the Mexican buffet which is a great value at only $8.99 for some amazing food. I also have to stick with the classic pork tenderloin sandwich, which still tastes the same as it did over 10+ years ago. Another great item to try after your meal is the fried ice cream, I think that I usually have to end every meal here with this great desert, in fact its probably the best! Prices are very reasonable, and the staff and management is very friendly. This is a true Collinsville landmark, right along side the giant catchup bottle. If you are in the area you need to stop by for some cheap good food. read more

We stopped at Bert's while on a visit with family. Everything is served in styrofoam or on disposable plates, which made it feel like a high school basketball game. The menu had a lot of variety, and it was a crowd pleaser, but still... it was just a little strange. The buffet wasn't open, so the lights were just off in one half of the restaurant. It felt like maybe we weren't supposed to actually be there. We asked the cashier what would be good to order since we are from out of town and her response was, "I don't know, something cheap, like the tacos" While the food was good for the most part and the coke signs were cool, there were a few other factors that just put us off. I honestly can't get enough of their tacos!! I do like their build your burger style of doing things, but I still keep running back to the tacos lol.... This place used to be in a tiny corner spot on Vandalia and was ALWAYS packed with a line wrapped around the corner.... Now that they are on a main spot on main street with a TON of space, it's an even greater spot to come and hang while you enjoy their laid back relaxed style of food...
