I typically don't bother reviewing chain restaurants, but.... This one is special. This DQ has a view that five star restaurants would envy, and has plenty of it. The dining area is spacious, and sits on the New River at the base of the New River Gorge. You order old school, walk up to a window, simple menu, then either dine in or head out. My wife's family all came from Hinton, West Virginia, so we go back every couple years to visit. This visit was very special since we were here to bury our son's ashes in the old family plot atop the mountain. And every visit must also include hot dogs at the Dairy Queen in town. Dunno whether it's the toasted buns, the wieners, the fixings or the ambiance right on New River, but just the best southern dogs (mustard, onion, chili and coleslaw) ever! Not to mention the shakes, malts, etc. And if you stop in on a Saturday night, I believe you would the majority of town folks stopping by. After all, we travel from Tampa area to get here! Great food and great ambiance. Just a caution, they do get busy at times, but worth the drive and the wait. read more

We were charged the full price of a soft drink when I requested a cup for water. If this is in fact the policy, the customer should be notified that they are being charged the price of a soft drink. Instead, when I asked the girl why I was charged the price of a Coke, her response was "well this way you can get anything you want from the fountain machine" . Pathetic... zero common sense. I could understand being charged .20 or .25 for the cup but to be charged the full price of a soft drink is ridiculous. Poor training and poor customer service. We should have been notified before card was charged. read more

Ok hadn't been here for quite awhile..I prefer another local place. Now this place isn't bad but I don't think it's as good. Hot dog was decent and burger was very thin..fries where very skinny ? Love me some corn dogs! Our local Dairy Queen is famous for the West Virginia slaw dogs which is mustard, onion, chili sauce, and coleslaw. I'm a convert. My favorite ice cream treat is a peanut butter cone, while people with bigger stomachs get the Blizzard. They recently announced breakfast is back, so head down for some good old biscuits and gravy! read more

I usually stop by here to get a Blizzard when I go to Hinton. Pipestem Park and Sandstone Falls is near. Hinton is a beautiful town and I'm glad DQ is there to have a place to get ice cream. read more

This has to be one of the prettiest Dairy Queen's in America. The front is deceptive because the back dining room has huge glass windows that look 180 degrees at the new river. Takes eating a Blizzard to a whole new level. read more

This is one of the most unique Dairy Queen's in the United States! It's truly the last of its kind! It was built to over the New River and has huge bay windows that over look it! You almost feel like your on a fancy boat while you eat your food! You order right at the little window just like the old school way! The buns are grilled and you can get fresh Cole slaw on your hot dog! It's so good and a southern style hotdog! You get quality food here and I always have to stop when I come home! I hope this stick around and I get to take my kids here one day and let them experience the old school Dairy Queen way! read more

I tried the legendary hotdogs, and I just don't get it. The chili had little flavor, so the dogs were bland except for the predominant flavor: bitter onions. Almost totally absent was the sweetness of the cole slaw. Two hotdogs, small fry and small drink are $10. Imagine, a hotdog dinner for a family of four, $40. It hardly seems a value. Excellent, friendly people what work here! The menu is very interesting on the good side! The Peanut Buster Parfait came out looking just like the marketing pictures and tasted perfect, as was the cone dipped in chocolate. Friendly, fast service. Tasty treats. Love the food when I go. But last time I tried to call food in, it was 7:30 pm, website says they close at 9, and no one picked up. I called 2 more times and sent to voicemail. I'm not stressed about not answering the phone, just that they may have closed early. I've seen them close up at 8 before when it says they are open til 9. And never do they post that they are closing on Facebook. Would be nice for them to announce when they are closing , it would save me a trip down from Pipestem. read more

You don't go here for the food. You go here for the beautiful view and unique experience. This location does have a much larger selection of items than most Dairy Queens though, with items like reuben sandwiches, pulled pork, etc. The cheese fries were a yummy snack to share after running around in the sun! read more

Great location and dining room. Good hot dogs. Better than most DQ locations I've been to. A little pricy for the product but not a big deal for lower cost foods they sell. Service windows are crowded, slow and even during the heights of the pandemic were extremely lax in enforcing masks, distancing, etc. Makes you wonder how clean the kitchen is on an average day. read more

This is a fine dining establishment that makes awesome Oreo blizzards. This particular Dairy Queen menu also features breakfast sandwiches, fish and chips and corn bread muffins. My husband and I have eaten here a lot this year- it's spectacular! Everything is always fresh, hot, and prepared exactly as requested. The customer service has always been five stars as well. All employees are kind and courteous. As for cleanliness, you cannot possibly ask for anything more than what this business does- tables are cleaned often, doors and windows are cleaned often, and restrooms are always clean. Keep in mind that this business stays busy all summer long with traffic off of the river, so to be able to keep a place this clean with employee shortages being what they are nationwide...they do a great great job. read more

Mainly because the dining area sits a few feet above the New River with gorgeous views of several mountains and then there is the great hot dogs, sundaes and everything. When its crowded, good luck finding a parking space! This is the same Dairy Queen I went to in childhood when there were swings and a little electric merry-go-round with horses where the new upper dining room now sits. Dairy Queen, Hinton is one of my absolute favorite places to spend time, but the quality of food has gone down hill over the years. The ambiance of the place is lovely - breathtaking views and clean tables, chairs, etc - as well as a lengthy menu give this restaurant an advantage, but their performance fails in terms of food quality and staffing, as well as pricing. This Dairy Queen lacks special deals that other Dairy Queens offer, and their prices are nearly double that of other local DQ restaurants. A simple order, such as a BLT - took 15 minutes to prepare and lacked mayonnaise. The sandwich was made sloppily, there were no condiments applied to it. The cheeseburgers were dry and over cooked. To top this off, every fountain drink in the restaurant was flat. Avoid this place if you're hungry - it makes for an excellent place to kill time with an expensive ice cream or a bag of fries however. read more

My parents grew up near Hinton and always told us about the glories of the slaw dogs from Hinton DQ. They were not lying. Every time we visited extended family, a visit to Hinton DQ was in order. Eating overlooking the river was a special treat for this Indiana girl used to flat scenery. Add to that the fact that the hot dog buns are Texas Toast, the chili is perfectly spicy, and the slaw perfectly creamy, and you have yourself a diamond in the rough. Great hot dogs!!! read more

Located on the beautiful New River, this local town favorite has an incredible view from the main dining area, which served as the perfect location for a town meeting. We not only had a great experience hearing from the Summers County residents, but we also truly enjoyed the view overlooking the river and the wonderful breakfast spread that was provided. The Dairy Queen is a good place to eat and very popular with everyone. However, we were there last night and the place was filthy dirty. Every table in the lower dining room was dirty and customers were forced to get a wet rag and bus their own tables before sitting down to eat. The rest room was dirty and needed attention. Even the outside area was filthy with table tops full of spilled ice cream and chocolate sauce. There are so few places to eat at in Hinton, one would think that the owner/manager of the Dairy Queen would want to have a clean restaurant since so many people enjoy the food and the view at this restaurant. This place it at least one of the better choices in the Hinton area.. But they can be a little slow and sometimes a little rude. The banana splits here are the best I've had from a Dairy Queen anywhere though.. So that always makes it worth my time :) read more

As a resident of Alderson (a town not near hinton), this place is considered a legendary restaurant, and a must go to place if you're visiting the area. Great atmosphere, beautiful view of thr river from one of the two dining areas, and AMAZING food (specifically their hotdogs and cheesburgers) all combine to make a great eating experience. But I do have one complaint. The staff can be a bit rude at times. For example, when they messed up my mother's order, the waiter gave a heavy sigh and took the food away, and didnt return for probably 10 to 20 minutes. I went up to the counter to see some staff members gathered around the food, talking and laughing, not doing their jobs. I had to actually flag down a cashier and tell her what happened, and within 5 minutes they gave us back the correct order. So basically, this place has AMAZING food, but not so amazing staff. read more

When we first moved to Talcott, Summers county West Virginia from hell, aka Logan, WV - one of the first places my Dad found for us to eat at was this Dairy Queen located on the New River @ Hinton, WV. My Dad didn't take us out to eat much at all and of course we didn't have McDonald's, Burger King or any of those things most people today grew up with, so this Dairy Queen was the greatest thing on earth for us to find can you imagine being a teen in 1963? When we got a treat this is where we went and it wasn't close to our house it was a bit of a drive ?maybe? 15 miles. The one reason that he would take us here is because they made the best Hot Dog ever made on earth. I remember that taste from my teen years one that has never left me. While leaving the area I stopped here to see if it was still good. The minute I walked into the place I was blown away with what I saw. A large dining room inside and a large dining room with glass all around that maybe used to be a porch on the river edge!! I was like Mary Tyler Moore going into Chicago for the first time!!! After all these years a Hot Dog could not possibly taste the same as it did to this skinny little country girl. But I let my anticipation grow. I asked the girl working there if they had good ones and she answered "well, we do have them". So she said what will you have? I said "Give me a Hot Dog with mustard, onion, chili and slaw. and a small strawberry milkshake (can't beat DQ ice cream anywhere)." I found a place to sit out next to the river view. (Which is a sight in itself - the New River is one of few "North flowing" rivers in the country.) How cool, they even served it to me. I was absolutely in "Heaven" no Almost about it!! The long anticipated taste of that hot dog from my teen years --- here goes the first bite. ????? OMG!! It was exactly the same! I was amazed just amazed! Over the taste of a hot dog, go figure. My tastes are simple and this is why. I have looked for this taste ever since I left there. How can a restaurant keep the same recipe thru 50 years (that I'm aware of don't know when it opened) 50 years of the same Hot Dog Bun, chili recipe!! Yes I do get excited over the little things in life. Needless to say I left the area on a delicious note. So my word to you is this: if you are ever in the area of Hinton, WV - The Bluestone Dam - you must treat yourself to a Hot Dog at this Dairy Queen. read more

This is the best Dairy Queen out there. It is legendary and lives up to the chatter around the state. It's menu goes beyond any I have ever seen at a Dairy Queen. It is also perfectly located, with it's lower dining room literally hanging over the New River, so during all seasons you can watch the river. To me, it's merely icing on the cake that they also serve Blizzards! read more

This ain't no ordinary DQ. Their breakfast is justly famous. Sit by the river, indoors and climate controlled, and watch the purple martins in their houses just outside. They have the usual DQ items, but more, too. read more

My family, approximately 20 of us, have been staying at Pipestem State Park for over 20 years. My parents, when they were children grew up in the area. All of us get to the Dairy Queen at least two times during the week stay. The menu is like no other Dairy Queen. The food is fabulous! Hot Dogs and Bar-B-Que with Slaw is awesome. All of us, 4 generations, enjoy sitting in the back room overlooking the New River, along with the variety of birds and butterflies. Staff is friendly and certainly go out of their way to make you feel at home. read more

I was born in Hinton, but have lived in Va for over 50 years. Yet I do not patronize Dairy Queen restaurants here. WHY? No toasted buns for the hot dogs, sometimes the buns are even stale. But in Hinton's DQ the hotdog buns are freshly toasted and yes the chili is delicious. No where in Va. have I found a DQ that has such a gorgeous view. The Hinton DQ has the feeling of a hometown, sit-down restaurant, not a fast food attitude of grab your bag of grub and get out. And yes, I do remember the playground at the Hinton DQ.
