Omelet Shoppe - A Little Slice of Road-Trip Americana…read more There isn't much in Beckley when it comes to very early breakfast before hiking New River Gorge NP, so we picked Omelet Shoppe mostly because it was a few blocks from the hotel and, honestly, how wrong can you go with eggs and bacon? Turns out: wonderfully right. This diner is pure road-trip gold, the kind of place where time slows down just enough for the coffee to taste better. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, greeting locals with hugs, warm questions about their families, and the kind of genuine familiarity that makes you wonder if you've accidentally walked into a reunion. And somehow, they made us feel like we were long-lost regulars too. It was all very wholesome and slightly magical. The food was simple, satisfying, exactly what breakfast should be when you're about to climb, wander, and sweat your way through a national park. So good, in fact, that we came back every single morning. Because why mess with perfection? A true little gem, comforting, unpretentious, and warm in all the right ways.

Pros Quanity- My omelet, home fries, toast, and coffee were about $13, so very affordable for some greasy spoon- type breakfast. Cons Service- Our service was spotty, and not the warmest, but can be understandable. Taste- I may have gotten the wrong thing, but overall there wasn't a whole lot of flavor (until I added hot sauce...that helped). Speed- Came in about 8:30, and it was 1/4- 1/2 full, but still took about 35 minutes to get our food after ordering. Not the slowest, but could have been better. Overall could have been a worse experience, and if you are wanting some quick, simple, Waffle House- style food, this is a good place to check out!

We were on vacation and driving through and stopped at this restaurant for lunch. We had to wait quite a while for our waitress to take our order, but they seemed fairly busy. After we ordered, again, we had quite a wait for our food. Our waitress forgot to bring (or perhaps order?) the fries my husband ordered as a side. When asked, she said she would be right back with the fries. We waited and watched her go from table to table, chatting with locals and community members. Then she passed our table and said she would come back with the fries. She again disappeared, and reemerged and went to socialize with other tables. She eventually brought the fries. Although my meal was hot (chicken and dumplings, fried apples, and broccoli), my husband's wasn't (chicken tenders, fried apples, mashed potatoes). The fries, when delivered, were the only part of his meal that was hot. Near the end of the meal, the waitress appeared and came over to refill our teas. She correctly identified mine as unsweet and my husband's as sweet topped both off. Unfortunately, she topped off both of ours with the wrong kind of tea. Unless you are a local, do not go to this Cracker Barrel that is just off the interstate. You will be forgotten about and ignored if you are passing through.

I had what could mostly be described as a "meat puck" that was covered in sausage gravy that was the only thing that even made it edible. The cheese soup was borderline inedible, the coleslaw reminded me of baby food and WAS inedible. The only thing that resembled food was the biscuit itself which was ok, if a little "bready" Avoid.

Usually I only post reviews for great 4 and 5 star places or for terrible 1 star places. And I never review fast food type places. This one is an exception because the biscuits here are amazing! The place is kind of a decent breakfast type place. A bit like an IHOP or a Dennys, except for those biscuits! The biscuits are freshly made, not mass-produced and reheated. They are golden, fluffy, buttery, light, and utterly delicious. I would come back here again just for the biscuits. I didn't try the gravy this time but I think I probably ought to. It looked like it was probably pretty tasty too. Everything else was pretty average.

Omelet That Slide…read more Founded in 1948 by the eponymous Bob Evans in Gallipolis, OH. While no longer run by the Evans family, Bob Evans restaurants are now numbered somewhere around 450 restaurants nationwide (mostly in the Midwestern/Southern regions of the USA, altho they do have locations in PA, NY, & NJ). This location is not too far from Hwy 19 here in WV and would make a good stop for road trippers and commuters alike. The Good: *Friendly and prompt service *Coffee was classic diner fare *Prices are ridiculously cheap for large portions (please note I'm from CA, so take that with as grain of salt) *Large and plentiful parking lot *Biscuits were bomb AF *Chicken Fried Steak was not spectacular, but it got the job done. The eggs were cooked well; the steak was nice and crispy; and the hash browns were the classic representation. The Meh: . *Décor is on the non-offensive kinda boring classic diner motif. *While the food was all very good, nothing was spectacular and worthy of an immediate return trip. The Ugly: *Whatever you do, don't look at the calories for the food here. 0_o TLDR: Solid American fare that's a good solid stop when available, and also easy on the wallet, too.

I ordered the lemon chicken small plate and it was good. My husband ordered the turkey dinner. He didn't get much food or the cranberry sauce. Such a good selection of sandwiches, salads and pizza. We got an order of onion rings to start off with. They were delicious with there house sauce. I ordered Camp Creek Club with house made chips. It was on toasted sourdough bread with a hearty helping of ham, turkey, crisp bacon, lettuce and thick slices of tomato (I opted to leave off the cheese and mayo). The Ham and Turkey were not deli meat but actual pieces of sliced ham and turkey! My husband ordered The Nate which is a fried bologna sandwich. It came with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mustard. The sandwiches were huge and very good!. He finished half of my half and I got the other half to take home for dinner. We had to save some room for the ice cream. Half of the restaurant is the diner and the other was ice cream and cake. There was plenty of choices of both! It was good creamy ice cream. Annie, our server was wonderful and the young man at the ice cream side was so delightful. It was very clean inside and out. This was a definite good lunch stop!
