My boyfriend and I happened to stumble upon this little place of delight while going to the Cox building next door. After eating there for the first time (which was about a month after they opened), I was extremely excited because the fish was so fresh and they did not drown the sushi in sauces as do most other sushi joints (namely Tennou and Sakura). While I am very enthused about Daiwa and its menu, I still like to go to Cafe Zen from time to time, but nowhere else.
The staff was what really made my experience though. Everytime I go there, I always look for Susie (I'm not quite sure if that's her name, but I know it's pretty close, it might be Susanna). She's always really friendly and has the biggest smile on her face. Every time I go there, which is pretty often, she would recommend new rolls or any special items they have for the day. One thing that she got me hooked on is uni! You guys should definitely try it; it's actually sea urchin and is more delicious than it sounds. Susie recommended it to me along with a shot of hot sake, and I swear it was like heaven in my mouth.
A few other rolls that was recommended to me that I love are the Lapalco Roll, Kimchee Hamachi, Mango Salmon Special Roll, Po-Boy Roll, Daiwa Special Roll, heck, I like all the rolls there.
Anyway, the Lapalco roll consists of snow crab, tempura flakes, and spicy tuna, topped off with a drizzle of spicy mayo. I usually like my fish whole and not mashed up, but this roll is soft, tender, and absolutely delish!
The Kimchee Hamachi has some greens along with yellowtail, carrots, and kimchee sauce wrapped in rice paper; the reason why I love this roll is because it's light, fresh, and simple. It's definitely great for summer!
The Mango Salmon Special Roll is good, but it's very similar to ones that I've eaten elsewhere. The only thing I don't like about this roll is that it's not made with fresh mango. The canned mango just doesn't taste right. I know it's hard to find the perfect mango, but honestly, I would rather the roll without the canned mango.
The Po-Boy Roll was actually my first roll at Daiwa and the first that Susie recommended as I wasn't an avid sushi eater then. I explained to her that I did not eat raw fish and had not had a good experience with sushi. She then recommended the po-boy special roll since it had no raw fish, it was a special roll, and it had a lot of cooked seafood in it. Let me tell you, even if you had never eaten sushi before, try this roll. It will definitely get you hooked!
I go to Daiwa very often and am disappointed to say that while the food is still good, I just feel as if Daiwa has let themselves go a bit and the rolls aren't as meticulously wrapped as well as it used to be. Usually, the presentation and sushi rolls are very well-wrapped, but from time to time, my sushi will fall apart before it hits my mouth.
I do recall that Daiwa used to have a manager named CK. I'm not exactly sure where he went, but I felt as though he gave good company and also did a good job at recommending rolls. Every time I came in to dine at Daiwa, CK was always able to recall my name and some of my favorite rolls. Now, as often as I come in, neither the sushi chef who owns the place nor the takeout girl ever calls me by my name. I have to admit, I do feel a bit under-appreciated since CK and Susie has gone.
In addition, I am sad to say that some of my favorite waiters and waitresses have since left Daiwa. Actually, since I come very often, I've seen many waiters/waitresses come and leave all the time. It's been a long time since I've seen Susie, and while Tony (?) wasn't the most efficient waiter, he did take the time to talk to me, which I very much appreciated. I'm glad to say that one of my new favorites, Terry, is still there. I definitely recommend her as a waitress as she is very attentive and hard-working (she has three jobs!).
The reason why I give Daiwa only three stars is because the service hasn't been the same, and sometimes I feel as if management is pushing away everyone. Just the other day I was eating at Daiwa, and saw one of the sushi chefs (Ken, I believe?) yelling at Terry furiously in the middle of the workday. Now, I'm not going to say whether he has the right to yell at her or not, but as a customer, I don't want to be in an environment like that. I come to dine and enjoy my time there, and listening to someone yell at another person is not my ideal sitting.
All in all, Daiwa is a pretty good sushi joint with really creative rolls. However, there can be some improvements with the sushi quality and along with management. read more
