    Pandan coconut pudding

I loveeee Malaysian rice plates!!! There aren't many options in the bay, so I am glad this spot is available. Parking: street/neighborhood Items: - Beef rendang rice plate: Good, but I prefer the chicken one more! - Nasi lemak and fried chicken rice plate: The fried chicken was gooood! Texture, batter, flavor. Amazing. I also really liked how there was two kinds of cucumbers: regular and pickled. Presentation was nice too. - Pandan coconut pudding: Soft and you can def taste the pandan coconut. - Roti and curry sauce - least fav dish of the night. Not bad, but roti was not what I expected/not as fluffy/crispy. And curry was ok. - Hartamas: Good if you're into sweet drinks! - Ampang: This was more refreshing, which i enjoyed more at the time. Some of the items I saw online weren't on the menu, but its ok. Everything was good overall for taste, presentation, and portion. Staff were friendly.

Everything was made well, but the flavor profiles just didn't completely hit. Got turnip cake, roti, chicken nasi lemak, and laksa. The turnip cake was tasty, if not a bit salty, but it had an excellent crust to it. The roti tasted fine, although I enjoyed it plain over dipping it with the provided curry sauce. The curry doesn't really taste like much. The nasi lemak had well made fried chicken, but the most flavorful parts of the dish were the anchovies, pickled cucumber, and peanuts. The laksa was probably the favorite dish. Shrimp and chicken were both cooked perfectly, but the broth could use more spice, shrimp paste, and coconut cream. Even the extra sambal to make it spicier didn't add any spice because it was more sweet. I wish they didn't hold back on the spice here. I could have been a pretty good dinner otherwise. Service was friendly, but food doesn't live up to my liking.

    Singapore chili crab and mantou

Come for: the chicken Know that: portions are small I came for SF restaurant week last month with a friend so excited about their singapore chili crab set menu. For $90, the meal included a crab and fried rice with 4 fried mantou buns. It was advertised to feed 2-4 people. We were skeptical and asked the server to confirm. She said it would but ended up being very wrong. (Note: we were a table of 2 normal sized guys) Crab (3.5/5): the sauce was good but nothing amazing. Went well with the mantou. The crab was pretty small and didn't have that much meat. Fried rice (3/5): also pretty average. The crab was flavor and meat was negligible. We ended up adding one more dish: the fried chicken which ended up being the best dish of the night. Cereal and salted egg fried chicken (4.5/5): juicy chicken, crispy, nice salted egg flavor. Would recommend. Service was average, ambiance was more like a date spot (smaller place) and parking wasn't terrible. Overall, for the price, I did not think the dinner was worth it. If I went again, I would center my meal around the fried chicken rather than the crab.

Special Malaysia night set menu was amazing. The star of the evening was without a doubt, the crab laksa noodle soup! Savory, and wonderfully fragrant. Service was pleasant and ambience was clean and simple. JYW recommends!

I have been languishing from the lack of good Malaysian/singaporean food here and I hoped Damansara would end the suffering The agony continues The ambience and interior of the place is cozy, the staff are attentive. But we know it's all about the food. I had Otah growing up and my grandma made it spicy, restaurants will never compare to your grandma so with that grain of salt, the otak otak here was pretty good, not spicy, with a nice flavour and mouth feel Laksa was not my cup of tea, I'm used to the very red/orange and coconut to make it thick, the broth herewas much more thin and, though, had a flavour was not flavourful(!) Roti was ok, but the curry sauce accompanying was also the same, thin and not satisfying in the mouth We also had nasi lemak, there was some serious lack in flavour here, couldn't pin it down, maybe if there were more salted nuts and ikan bilis it would have been better. Sambal was decent. We had tofu here and the flavour was only on the surface, no flavour reached inside the tofu and provided a bland experience Finished with chendol, actually pretty good, brought back my brain freeze memories of chendol at changi airport because I still eat too fast despite no plane to catch Unfortunately at their price point, I'd only come back to try the chilli/black pepper crab. My languishing resumes

In one of the best places to dine from the list of the Melting Spots, I have Damansara off the bat. I have to visit this Malaysian restaurant for one big reason, to try the medium spicy laksa bowl one last time. This is now my second time trying one since Tang Bar in Stonestown Food Court. I'm itching to try other Malaysian treats as well. Visiting Damansara is like I already set foot in the streets of Kuala Lumpar without leaving the big city. Inside, I can smell the aroma that is similar to Thai spices, but everything I order on the menu is truly Malaysian! Even though I'm the only one dining here, everyone working in Damansara is very nice. The only table I sit is where the sunlight shines through the curtains and into my food and drink as if they're in the spotlight. For my appetizer, Roti Chanai with vegan curry dip. While the roti is nice and fresh, the mild dip delivers pleasant tones of a bit of tart and savory flavors. That's something new for my palate! Then comes the star of tonight's dining experience, Vegan Laksa! Adding an extra spiciness can bring a total of three chili peppers, yikes! More coconut cream? Extra noodles? Or more laksa broth? None of the above! I can smell my bowl of broth a half dozen inches away. The laksa spices definitely hit the spot. And since it's medium spicy, it's practically painful, but a man like me can handle this much spiciness based on how much my body can take it. As for the mushrooms, green beans, and tofu cubes, they're all in good quality. Red bean coconut shaved ice with pandan jelly (Chendol) never disappoints. I can handle the frozen chunks similar to when I handle the laksa spices. I like how my female server comes to my table every time since I'm the only one dining. Everything from a laksa bowl to shaved ice was perfectly executed; all made with such promising efforts. There are still many restaurants where I encounter spicy foods before I decide to fall back to choosing a mild level. May their business continue to shed more light for La Cocina.

Came here for a quick dinner. Popiah was fine. Was not a fan of the raved about cereal fried chicken. Did not try the classics and opted for the chili pan mee and it was spicy! But was lacking in flavor for me. I'll come back and try the nasi lemak and laksa next time. Thanks!

Crab fried rice was good, the only thing is I feel like it was a bit overpriced for the portion sizes we got. This was a restaurant week deal, and the crab fried rice was and priced to share for three people

Situated right off San Jose Ave, Damansara is a cute little mom and pop restaurant (malaysian own from KL). Went on a sunday and parking was pretty easy. We got reservation but it was pretty free, so prob was not necessary. There was only one waitress and she was very attentive. She checked on us every now and then to make sure we had everything and refilled our waters at least 3x. We enjoyed the otak, laksa, fried chicken. The popiah was ok, good but likely wont get again. The cendol was ok also and will get again as it is mom's fav dessert. The mee goreng fel like malay korean to me. I made that term up but the sweet and spicyness made me felt that way. It is way saucier than traditional malay mee goreng. It felt quite fusion. Will return to try the coconut laksa next time to comepare and get the roti canai. Total came to $120 for 3, so ~$40/person. So little southeast asian food left in the city. Pls go support them!

Excellent service! This is the ONLY Malaysian restaurant I care to go to in SF for the last year or so... that one place in Chinatown is super lacking in the one thing quintessential to Malaysian cuisine: hospitality. Damansara thrives at making their guests feel at home and I love bringing family and friends here. We had the rendang and omg...having been to KL many times over the years I am so picky about the texture of rendang and Damansara is the expert, if not the maker of the best I've ever had. You can tell they really take their time slow cooking their meat with imported spices. The laksa was amazing and the cendol was just like the kind my grandmother used to love to order at the food court in Midvalley. Damansara is truly the next best thing to a plane ticket back to Malaysia. Cant wait to try the chili pan meen!!!

as a singaporean-malaysian, I was excited to try this! I did not have to wait for a walk in on Sunday night, but I arrived around 6. food came out really quickly, and the staff were super nice and attentive (filling our glasses often). the dishes seemed pretty authentic, but I wish the sambal was spicier. I also wish the rendang was a bit more tender and moist -- it was a bit dry. the laksa was complex in flavor and not spicy at all. I wish they were more generous with the egg and shrimp. in general, pretty pricey but worth a try if you have never had Malaysian food.

We came by for dinner early on a Saturday. We had classic dishes - beef rendang and the laksa soup. The food tasted good; rich and spicy. Maybe a little too rich/spicy because i felt a little gassy afterward, but that may just be me. We didn't have any cocktails but they did look good, asian inspired. Overall a good experience, a little on the pricier side but the quality seems to justify it. Peanut allergy: some items have peanuts - we let the waiter know and i had no issues with cross contamination here.

Malaysian restaurants are rare, and this one seems authentic. Ambiance is nice-casual and the restaurant is very clean. Service was very friendly! We only tried the Asam Laksa, which is my favorite Malaysian dish. The flavors were right-- which is honestly so rare. The shrimp sauce (in the spoon) and the mackerel tamarind soup really made it feel real. However, the noodles were overcooked and really short, the soup was very salty and I wished there was more broth. Definitely had the potential to live up to the stuff in Malaysia, but it fell a bit short. Would be willing to try this place again to explore more of the menu. 3.5-4 stars for now!

The menu warns of possible undercooking, but doesn't say which dishes. If it applies to only certain non-vegan dishes, please add a symbol saying which dishes. I'd be surprised at beef rendang or nasi lemak. Are they subject to this warning?

I see the menu no longer mentions the 20% equity fee, and says a 20% service fee may be added for parties of six or more. Can anyone confirm that they no longer have any other service fees, either an equity fee or a San Francisco mandate surcharge?

Only service fee for large parties.

Is there outdoor or patio seating?

No, it's 100% indoor seating. Also, tables are close together. I understand this, because it's a small place. If you're trying to distance, you may be uncomfortable unless you take care to go off peak times and have a back up plan nearby just in…

It was my favorite for an extremely popular dish now prominent on Irving Street near 12th Avenue, my introduction to their famous staple chicken wings. I continued to periodically get them here until they closed. Fast forward forty years and a friend invited our group here for a birthday lunch on summer Saturday at 12:30 pm. Running late from my morning errands, I arrived shortly after the meal was ordered (Forgive me for possible inaccuracies and incomplete information) since our host ordered seventeen dishes for our party of 12 to feast on family style. Here's a summary of the highlights. Favorites in no particular order: a. Chow Kway Teow (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=OXyh4S0Zwn0zipsVbIfDRw) - flat rice noodle stir-fried with shrimp, Chinese sausage and eggs; this is a classic dish using chow fun as the base and a mix of ingredients. My favorite. b. Basil tofu (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=yyuLG6v-DwEePR0j1kArYg) - tofu and shiitake mushroom in basil sauce; I enjoyed the ingredient mix and the sauce made everything balanced. c. Singaporean curry noodles (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=W1xq3h8e0WW7u20WyKJB9w) - glass noodle stir fried in our special curry sauce with shredded chicken; not your typical version as it is glass (as in transparent) noodles, a more slippery texture. This is also wet and made with mushroom slices. My 2nd favorite. d. Sambal okra (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=a5na569KcDG96eS9q_kHVg) - Wok fried okra with spicy sambal sauce; I enjoy the texture of okra though it's an acquired taste. The spice level was perfect for me, medium with a lean towards spicier. The other notable dish is the Hainan chicken rice (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=hCAhsBqrYfSFKP1mKg7Sjg), steamed chicken served with rice cooked in broth and ginger. It came with three sauces, a special soy sauce, garlic ginger sauce, and a bright red chili sauce. It was well made though I wished the rice was more fragrant. The restaurant was empty aside from our party when I walked in at 12:45 pm for several diners came in as our meal progressed. The two young ladies who tended to our party were efficient in removing empty plates and refilling our water glasses. In reading other reviews, the chili dungeness crab seems to be a popular dish. Maybe on my next visit.

While folks loved to rave about Burma Superstar, I came here for its more homey and community feel. Recently, it looks like they got recognition from James Beard, which changed the population who came here. Since I wanted it to stay around longer, I don't mind. Overall, the food is very good. It has more authentic items like the Burmese Fish Chowder or Tea Leaf salads, as well as Thai and Chinese style Asian food. On warm days you can choose some of the lighter fare and on cold days, there's warm and comforting choices. What soured my last experience was the initial staff. I came in the early evening, with a service dog, and the staff who greeted me was noticeably uncomfortable. They immediately asked if I could sit outside, while gesturing toward the dog. Since it was a cold night, I asked to be seated inside. The staff consulted with 2 other staff members, specifically about the dog, until another staff came to inform me that all inside tables were reserved. The restaurant was half empty. I informed them under ADA, I can't be treated differently due to the dog, but they vehemently insisted there were reservations. Rather than argue, we agreed to be outside in the cold. When I began to sit at one of the outside tables, they insisted I move to another table in the corner. It felt very much like I was being treated differently. After we sat down, the service was quick. I've never had such a fast meal at a sit-down restaurant - we were in/out in 45 minutes. While we were eating, I saw multiple people go in and get seated inside. In fact, for the majority of the time we ate, the people arriving were seated immediately. I could give them the benefit of the doubt that these were all reservations, if I didn't clearly hear their staff ask how many people were in their party. If they had a reservation, why would that question be needed? Further, because we were seated outside, I kept having to be mindful of people walking their pet dogs and potential aggression toward the service dog. This happened multiple times as people were doing their evening dog walks. The sad thing is that I would have considered this place a 5-star rating were it not for the first interaction with staff. The food was great (as always). The service was quick. And despite us being outside, they came and checked in with us many times. First impressions are very hard to overcome, and the feeling of being unwanted never left me as I dined. In hindsight, I really should have just left.

I love burma superstar! This place is such a classic San Francisco spot. My first few visits were…read moreactually at the Oakland location. I had never had Burmese food before. There are so many amazing dishes but I would really recommend coming with a group and experiencing this spot family style. That's the way to do it. Parking can be tough so it's not a bad idea to take alternative transit options. Also this spot can be super packed at popular dinner and lunch hours like on the weekend. For the salads I highly recommend the tea leaf salad especially if you've never had it before. It's quite unique. The mango salad is quite good too with the unripen mangos so it isn't super sweet. It has a zesty dressing. The rainbow salad is good but it's more like a cold noodle dish and less greens so depends on what you are looking for. The samusa soup is good! The coconut chicken soup and noodle dishes used to be my favorite thing on the menu. But now it's a little to heavy, creamy, and rich for me. I would recommend sharing this one because it's so tasty. I love their coconut rice great with any of their curries or to complement the protein dishes. The garlic noodles don't wow me but they're good and great to go with a meal. The sesame chicken is good and tangy but it is breaded chicken. So depends on if you are up for that. The chili lamb is super good and so is the beef curry. They have a rice dish with chicken and shrimp that is good too. If you are okay with sweet things the mango chicken is good. And then they have some spicy dishes that are good if you like the spice. I don't love their green beans which is sad because I usually like this style of green beans which. They're a little spicy for my taste but maybe that's exactly what you are looking for. Burma superstar is honestly a comfort place for me at this point.

I've been to several other Burma Superstar locations, but unfortunately this one didn't live up to…read moremy past experiences. I came on a Sunday during lunch and was seated immediately, which was great. However, the service felt off from the start. The person at the front didn't greet us warmly and seemed uninterested. Once seated, our server, a young woman, appeared disengaged and not particularly happy to be there. She spoke very softly and seemed annoyed throughout the interaction. The only time she checked on us was about a minute after the food arrived, when everyone had just started serving themselves. After that, she never came back. We ended up waiting quite a while for the check, and the person at the front ended up helping us. As for the food, it was honestly pretty average. I think there are better Burmese options in the Bay Area now. 3/5 - Roti The dipping sauce lacked flavor, and the roti tasted like it wasn't made fresh. It was hard on the outside and arrived about a minute after ordering. 3/5 - Garlic Noodles with Chicken The noodles were thick and somewhat bland. They weren't served very hot, and the chicken was shredded rather than the style I expected. 3/5 - Chicken Basil Stir Fry It was saucy, but the flavors were muted and didn't stand out. Overall, this location felt like it may have been better in the past. Between the disappointing food and forgettable service, it wasn't a memorable experience. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars and would likely try other Burmese restaurants before returning.

Heard great things about this place and came here on a Sunday with some friends. Make sure to come…read more30 mins before opening to put your name down, the wait is very long and they run out of their specials towards the end of the night. (We came 20 mins before opening and wait was already 60 mins). The restaurant was small and cozy and the staff was very friendly Clay pot rice: this was my favorite dish out of everything we tried. The rice was perfectly oiled and crispy and the sausage was delicious Mapo spaghetti: I normally don't go for fusion dishes like this but this dish was surprisingly very yummy. A little too salty though if I were to be picky XO escargot: the XO sauce was delicious with the milk bread that it comes with. Steamed cod: this was one of the specials of the day and I'm glad we ordered it! The fish was very soft and light. Overall, great experience, yummy food, but not sure if it's worth the wait!

Five of us dined here to celebrate a birthday. According to the one who managed to get the…read morereservation, it's quite popular and the reservation is one of the coveted ones in SF. Anyway, having tried it, I can say it was good, but not so good that I'd expend that much energy to secure the reservation. Have to say, service was really great. Servers were attentive without being overbearing, which is always welcome. We ordered several dishes and dined, as they suggested, family style. To start, we were given two complimentary dishes, the roasted peanuts and the smashed cucumbers; both were nice appetizers. We ordered the Chiu Chow green beans, the Mongolian beef noodles, the claypot rice with lop cheung and bacon, the salt 'n peppa prawns, and the whole fried petrale sole, the last two being on the day's "specials" board. The winning dish was definitely the green beans. All the food was good, but seemed to be a bit overly salted and highly spiced. The piece of beef I had from the Mongolian beef noodles was tender, but one of my friends thought her piece was a bit tough and too chewy; we all thought the beef could have been cut into smaller or thinner pieces. We also shared two desserts since it was a birthday celebration (there are only three options offered). We had the red bean shaved ice and the mango pudding. Both were good (not "oh, boy, yummy" good, but good). Nice to try. The price wasn't outrageous ($200 including tax and tip), but I think this will be a "been there, done that" experience for me unless a friend absolutely wants to go again.
