    Burmese Style Chicken Salad

    While walking around Clement Street, we decided to try Burma Superstar for lunch. There are some Burmese restaurants in the city, but this one is by far one of the most popular and has been here for many years. Service was wonderful and welcoming. We were seated at around noon, and people were starting to fill up the place. They have outside dining as well, which helps when it gets busy. Inside was a bit dark, having wooden furniture and paneling with Burmese decor and artwork. The menu is quite extensive, including a lunch menu, a regular menu, and a drink menu. Taking pictures of the many menus was a chore in itself! ***OUR PICKS*** TEA LEAF SALAD ~ fried garlic, peanuts, sunflower seeds, roasted sesame mixed with lemon juice, tomatoes, fresh green jalapeños, fish sauce, and dried shrimp. Definitely much more lettuce than any tea leaf salad I've ever had. I wasn't expecting this much greenery and was disappointed that there were less nuts, seeds and no fried chickpeas or beans. It was lacking the crunchy textures that I was expecting. 3/5 BURMESE STYLE CHICKEN SALAD ~ fried chicken slices, salad with cabbage, fried onions, cilantro, and dressing with garlicky kick. This salad was a bit spicy compared to the tea leaf salad. The fried chicken slices weren't slices but small pieces. I tasted more batter than chicken. 3/5 TOFU VEGETABLE KEBAT ~ Fried tofu cooked in onions, tomatoes, strings beans, bell peppers, lemon juice, coconut milk, jalapenos, & mint. This item was on the lunch menu and definitely not for sharing due to its small size. It's actually $1 more than the regular menu, because you get a slaw (without dressing?) and rice. This wasn't worth the price when you get a few cubes of tofu and a little bit of vegetables for $18.50. It was lacking flavorful and quite disappointing. And I'm not sure if they forgot the dressing on the slaw because it was naked! 2/5 OH NOH KAUSWER ~ (coconut chicken noodle soup) Burmese style coconut noodle soup with chicken, topped with onions, eggs, cilantro, lemon & chili. We thought it would be more soupy, but it was a thick, goopy type of gravy. The flavor was ok, but nothing special. This would have been better if it had been a broth with lemongrass, curry, and coconut milk. 3/5 Amazingly, this restaurant has been in business for over 30 years. People may have a different idea of what authentic Burmese food is like, so they will keep returning. They have those people to thank. Unfortunately, we don't fall into that category. We felt the food was overpriced for small portions and flavors didn't impress us.

    We ordered basil chicken samosa soup tea leaf salad and cocktails Personally I felt like the cocktails were too sweet and it was super hard to drink with the chunks of lychee. Food was good but I was not wowed like I remember from my childhood. Chicken had good flavor but could use a bit more heat and samosa Soup felt one dimensional. I mean nothing was bad but mandalay wows me more.

    We went here for lunch yesterday and had a great time. Our server, Andrew was fantastic. He checked up on us multiple times throughout the meal. This time, we noticed that the sticky fingers rib portion size is about 2x the portion size than what we had maybe a year ago. Still same great flavor and same price. I could recommend anyone getting this. We got the usual of the tea leaf salad, nan gyi thok, and basil chicken and it was great. Burma Superstar continues to be one of our favorite places with great service, food, and a cozy atmosphere.

    We had surprisingly never tried this Burmese restaurant even though it's been around for 30+ years. Met up with my brother and wife who live nearby for a 5:30 dinner, but all they had was outside seating or a half hour wait, so we sat outside. (I later learned you can book a resie on Yelp.) One of the outdoor seating areas has glass walls so it wasn't freezing, but no heaters. The other one is fairly open for hotter days. It's cutely decorated with paper lanterns. Service was fast and friendly. We started with spicy margaritas and Tsing Tao beer and complimentary taro type spicy chips. All items can be shared, so we started with two Platha orders, which are hot flatbread served with a yellow curry sauce. There were about 6 pieces each and very yummy ($14 each). We also got an order of the Sticky Fingers appetizer, which were bone in pork riblets in a caramelized, sweet garlic & soy wine glaze ($15.50). Very yummy but kind of a pain to chew off the bone. My husband thought they were oxtail. We then had the large portion of Superstar Shrimp, wok-tossed shrimp with chili & garlic sauce, comes with side of broccoli ($34.50). They asked what spice level we wanted between 1-5 and we got a 2 so not too hot. We had two orders of coconut rice on the side, which is a jasmine & basmati fried rice made rice cooked with coconut milk, with brown rice, chickpeas, topped with fried onions ($5.50 each). I could have eaten a bowl of this! My favorite was our last order, the Spicy & Crispy Chicken, deep fried chicken in a sweet and tangy spicy sauce with chili & garlic ($30.50). It was like an amped up sweet KFC but no bones and delish! We also had Sonoma county Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and both were reasonably priced. We opted for dessert at Toy Boat one block down. We split the bill and it was $130 each couple with tip, so not outrageous. We will definitely be back to try more items soon!

    Single seat near the kitchen, was super noisy and busy traffic, but that's okay. I came to eat and not to impress anyone. If there were others in party might have waited for better seating. At least indoors on cold night Other prime seating for large parties Dinner crowd Packed and line at 4:45pm All size parties. Monday night!! Fiery vegetables tofu, packed some good heat. Nice medley of kale, green beans, red pepper. Super flavorful sauce. Plenty of tofu, no skimping here. Coconut rice. Good addition. Came out to about three good size combination servings which I wolfed down after no lunch. Thai ice tea coconut milk. Great for non dairy Maybe salad next time Gratis chips with shrimp given to table next to me Left my wallet on the table. They got me before I left!!

    My go-to spot for Burmese food! Would recommend going early/calling ahead of time to confirm wait times though, as it can get pretty crowded during peak hours. The inside gives a cozy vibe, and wait staff are very attentive. What I've tried: - Tea leaf salad - MUST GET! A staple when it comes to burmese cuisine and this one never disappoints - Platha and dip - great option for an appetizer! Wouldn't say it's a must for me but I definitely wouldn't say no. The dip reminds me of a creamy curry and is super comforting! - Moh Hinga - catfish noodle soup - a great option if you love fish soup! I'm not sure I could eat a whole bowl myself but I almost always get it to share family style with others. - Pumpkin curry - so delicious! This is something I hadn't tried until recently and discovered I actually really like it and this one did not disappoint! - Chicken basil stir fry - quite salty, and nothing super extraordinary but I'm a sucker for thai basil so I still really liked this dish paired with a side of coconut rice. I could pass on this dish next time, or maybe ask for less salt to be added. Burma Superstar continues to be my go-to when craving burmese food in the city!

    All of the items are always a good first try. Coconut curry soup was good but had minimal chunks of chicken. Tea leaf salad is good, they mix it for you. Garlic noodles were ok, didn't taste much garlic. They give free taro chips. Service though is definitely kind and attentive! Place is kind of small but has outside seating.

    I'm so excited to say that I finally tried Burma Superstar, after so many years of it being in my saved SF spots! We went on a Sunday night and luckily we remembered to get on the Yelp waitlist so we didn't have to wait too long. Instead, we used that time to look for parking LOL! After circling around the neighborhood a couple times, we were able to find parking so just be persistent in looking for parking! The inside of the establishment is a bit on the smaller side but the ambiance is very homey and cozy feeling. The bathroom here is also very clean, which is another plus for the city! Our server was very attentive in checking up on us every now and then, and also informing us of their dinner special! We came at a good time since it's currently SF Restaurant Week, so they were doing a Dinner Special for 2 people for $75 and select beverages for a discounted price. Thankfully, the items they had listed on the dinner special were the dishes that we wanted to try! For appetizer, we chose the Platha & Dip and added chicken for an additional $2. The platha was really crispy and not overly oily, so it was good on it's own! The dip used was a curry that had a strong minty, complex taste. I would give this dish a 3.5/5. For salad, we (of course!) chose the Tea Leaf Salad, which was my personal favorite! The server was nice enough to toss it for us and so each bite was a perfect combo of the fresh lettuce, tomatoes, crunchy nut and seed toppings, and slightly bitter but umami fermented tea leaves! It's a crazy, flavorful explosion in your mouth each bite! Definitely a must each time you eat here! For main entrees, we were allowed two items. We chose the Firecracker Cauliflower and Chicken w/ Fresh Basil. The Firecracker Cauliflower was a saucy, fried, garlicky concoction and is a good dish to get your veggies in! It tasted reminiscent of the garlic sauce chicken wings from 3Star in Vallejo, minus the chicken! The Chicken w/ Fresh Basil was a typical stir fried dish with lots of fresh veggies. Both dishes were delicious, but I would definitely get the Firecracker Cauliflower again! For sides, we got the Coconut Rice and Burmese Fried Rice. We weren't too fond of the Burmese Fried Rice since the texture of the brown rice was a little too hard and it tasted too strongly of turmeric. We absolutely loved the Coconut Rice though! The rice was a pillowy texture and the coconut flavor gave it a slight sweetness. For drinks we got the Iced Thai Tea, which was at a discounted price of $6 due to the dinner special, and the Lychee Mojito, which was at the regular price of $13. The Thai tea tasted like your average Thai Tea. The Lychee Mojito stole the show because it tasted very strongly of fresh lychees and the mints weren't overpowering at all. The drink didn't taste like an alcoholic one either! All in all, Burma Superstar is definitely a superstar in my list! Definitely come check them out, especially during this week since they have a great deal for restaurant week!

    Great Burmese food. The side of rice was very dry but the cauliflower and chicken were excellent. Samosas were great tasting and good sauce. Soda is steep at $4.50 and mandate fee 5.5%.

    ALL ASIANS AND ANYONE WHO LIKES THEIR FOOD FLAVORFUL, BEWARE OF THIS TOURIST TRAP. After waiting 25 minutes at our table before we were acknowledged (in which they handed us a small batch of complimentary chips) , our waitress finally took our order, but not before she went on a spiel about taking a part of their salad sweepstakes. Apparently if we order three of their salads we can be entered to win some kind of prize with merch or gift card at the end. I had to double check where i was again. I thought i was eating at a restaurant, not some kind of lottery scam, so we promptly denied this casino gamble and went ahead to order. We got the classics, or what should have been. Tea leaf salad, platha, garlic noodles, burmese style curry, and coconut rice. At this point, my mouth was dry, after not having been served water for thirty minutes, so we also asked for our waters. Now at this point, im trying my best to be kind. I get it. Its busy, sometimes you cant be attentive to every table. Ive been a kbbq waiter before, i completely get it. The food comes out (the salad and the platha first), where the waiter roughly stirs up the salad (an old burma superstar trick) as the leaves fly all over the table. We had to ask for water again, since our original waitress forgot our waters. Whatever, we have our food. Perhaps the food can redeem this experience. The tea leaf salad is carried by the tea leaf sauce. The rest of the vegetables are limp. You can tell the owner wanted to see where they could cut costs, and they decided that the freshness of the vegetables was secondary, since the tea leaf sauce flavor overpowers. The platha was fine though. Good, not great. Ive had better. Then the beef curry and the garlic noodles. The beef curry was good, ill give them that. The garlic noodles were terrible. It offended me by how pathetic its attempt to recreate this dish was. I imagine the owner/chef thinking that if they include this on the menu, tourists will pick it thinking that they ate an iconic asian american sf food staple. No garlic flavor whatsoever. Scallions cut without any attention to detail. The sauce flavor was uninspiring (think like a microwavable trader joes meal) and the noodles cold. This was the final straw. And we still hadnt gotten our waters. At this point, we are furious. Weve spent $100(!!!) in food to be treated like literal shit, and the food we eat we dont even finish. We quickly pack the rest and decide to go home. I truly love food. I love going to restaurants and being inspired by how chefs present their food to their customers. I love to cook for people. Its such an act of love and service to have another person eat the food i make. This food was a slap to my face. "We just want your money." The restaurant is telling me. "We're coasting off the laurels of food blogs from 2016." "We are the restaurant that white people recommend to their asian coworkers. We don't care about the culture a restaurant brings to this space. We just want your money." I used to love this restaurant. I had it for the first time in 2018. It was my introduction to Burmese cuisine. To see it being this popular baffles me. It hurts me to know that tourists come here expecting a great SF meal and end up disappointed. They go back to their homes, telling others that SF food is so overrated and expensive. You can tell a lot about a person by their tastes. If you like this restaurant, i will assume you are someone who votes republican.

    Visited a Friday night around 8PM and the place was very busy. However, only had to wait ~30min for an outdoor table for my party of 4. Ordered the sesame beef and the spicy and crispy chicken with coconut rice. Portions are very generous, so from the rice both me and my friend were able to eat, same with the meats. The sesame beef was crispy and sweet. The spicy and crispy chicken, to my surprise as someone who doesn't love extremely spicy food, was not that spicy, but perfect for my palate. Overall, great food! I've visited this restaurant multiple times and rest assured I will continue to come!

    I came on a weekday evening for dinner and there was a lot of people in the restaurant, but we were still able to get a table immediately. Service was pretty fast. It can be tough to find parking since it's located on a busy street. Items ordered: - Tea leaf salad: My favorite appetizer! The menu literally says "it's a party in your mouth" and I definitely agree. Salad is crunchy and comes with so many toppings and rich with flavor. - Platha and dip: Similar to roti and overall delicious! I really liked the curry dip. - Moh Hinga soup: My friend recommended this soup and it was delicious! Has a pretty strong fish/seafood flavor but I liked how the flavors of the other toppings still paired well altogether. - Burmese lamb curry: First time having this dish and it was great, rich in flavor and lamb was tender. The food is always so delicious, would definitely come back to try other dishes!

    No they are NOT open on Christmas Day ! But go soooner ! Its a unique fabulous cuisine in the Innner Richmond neighborhood of the west side of San Francisco

    No but across the street there's a coffee shop you can sit and wait

    Do they use monosodium glutamate(MSG) and or chicken powder? We are very allergic to both.

    Not sure... but they sure do use large amounts of sodium chloride, 8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-nonenamide, and the sulfur compound allicin.

    Is there a long wait for lunch? How about on weekdays?

    Hit or miss. It's a popular place. Sometimes you wait a bit (and drink tea). It's pretty quick turnover though.

    What kind of vegan options are there?

    Quite a few options- pull up the menu!! So good.

    Does Burma Superstar have any low carb options? And if so, what would be the recommendations besides a salad?

    They have a lot of meat and fish options that don't come with rice. If you want rice you have to order separately so that's always another low carb option other than just eating their salad.

    What should a first timer order?

    A must - Tea Leaf Salad!

    Is the food spicy?

    It can be! If you are sensitive avoid ordering the items which are indicated spicy on the menu and ask your server to make any dish non spicy!

    Do they take reservations?

    You can call ahead to get on the waitlist. We tried to get on the waitlist while in transit for lunch last month and they said not for lunch but they you can do that for dinner. Recommend trying that

Artichoke needed some level of salt to even out the heavy lemon but well cooked nonetheless 5. Brussel sprouts were flawless 6. The sorbet is amazing! It's how I expect strawberry ice cream to taste but lighter and fresher. Overall, would I come back? Absolutely Would I recommend it to a friend? Already done lol
