I stopped by at Damasco Mediterranean Cuisine on my way back home from Joshua Tree National Park. This is the second time that I eat here and it won't be the last. I order the chicken kabob plate and this is delicious. The chicken is juicy and every side that forms part of this plate, compliments one another. You have spicy, crunchy elements that burst in your mouth. I enjoyed the fact that they provide you with a garlic paste dipping sauce that is filled with of flavor. The service is great. They check in to ask how you are doing or if you need else. That check-in makes all the difference. The serving size is on point. I eat good and I could not finish my food. I was excited to try Damascus Mediterranean Cuisine based on the ratings, but unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. We ordered the Combo Kebab plate, which is one of the most expensive entrées on the menu at around $30. Given the name and price, I expected a generous assortment of meats. Instead, the plate came with only a few small pieces of beef, a few pieces of chicken, and a single kefta skewer. The overall meat portion felt surprisingly small for a premium combo platter. More concerning, the kefta appeared undercooked, which made it difficult to enjoy the meal. We also ordered the homemade yogurt drink. While I understand traditional recipes can vary, this version was overwhelmingly garlicky. My wife couldn't drink it at all, and I wasn't able to finish mine either. The ordering experience was also frustrating. I asked whether there was an appetizer sampler or mixed plate that would allow us to try a variety of items. Instead of suggesting a combination or accommodating the request, the owner repeatedly encouraged us to order multiple appetizers individually, even after I explained that it would be far too much food for us. Service was another weak point. There was no visible waitstaff available to answer questions or assist diners. Whenever we needed something, we had to walk toward the kitchen area and try to find someone ourselves. To make matters worse, the meal came with only a single piece of pita bread and no meaningful sides, which made the already modest portions feel even less satisfying. Overall, I left feeling that the food quality, portions, and service did not justify the price. While this restaurant has a high rating, I personally found the experience well below what I would expect from a good Mediterranean restaurant, especially compared to similar places elsewhere. My heart and belly are full! Please, do yourself a favor and make a trip to Damasco. To me, coming here felt like home. The service is fantastic. I believe it was the owner helping us today and he was so kind! We came in for my birthday and he brought me a rose and birthday balloons. It was so kind, and made me feel extra special! I would never expect anyone to go out of their way like that, it was very sweet. The food here is amazing! I would highly recommend the baba ghanouj and the chicken kebab! Falafel: 6/5 The perfect falafel. No other flavors than chickpeas and herbs. Perfectly fried and has such a light and fluffy texture, I was shocked by how great these were. A must get. Combo Plate: 5/5 A solid plate that can easily feed 2 people or be an excellent appetizer for 3. The rice was a huge star, savory and definitely not an afterthought. You can basically try their whole menu from this plate. The meat is seasoned well, maybe slightly on the overcooked end, but has a very nice and uniquely Syrian sort of flavor (from what I know, but what do I know). The garlic sauce and spicy sauce are also a must with the meat! They complement it very well.The kefta kind of tasted... spoiled but I have had meats on kebabs taste like this before so... do with that as you will. It was the most flavorful though! Chicken: 4.5/5 Beef: 4/5 Kefta 3/5. Rice 5/5/ Mixed Pickles: 4/5 I'm not a huge pickle lover but I appreciated that these did not have a searing vinegar kick. They taste very similar to other Middle Eastern and Eastern-European pickles I've had in the past, but have a homemade vibe to them. Tastes great with the meats. Hummus: 4.75/5 REAL hummus. Velvety and has clear flavors of tahini and olive oil. Delicious, hard to do better than this. If you want to try how hummus should taste, this is the one. Grape Leaves: 3.5/5 I was looking forward to these but they had that really mushy texture like they were from a can. I enjoyed the sweet drizzle on top (I think it's pomegranate molasses) but it was whatever. Flavor is slightly sour and slightly grandma-fridge-esque. Syrian Tea: 5/5 Not sweetened, tasted very strongly of cinnamon and cloves. Easily gave 3 people 2 cups each. Delicious, warm, and helps start and end the meal. Very Indian "chai" vibes if I had to compare it to anything. Oh, it tastes like Korean cinnamon tea without the sugar! Ambiance: The dining room literally looks like a nursing home/an old church building from the 80s. Come for the food! Service: Service was kind of slow but the workers are very kind. Wow, what a hidden gem! So glad my husband and I decided to stop in for dinner. This is some of the best food I have had from a restaurant in a long time! Everything was so flavorful and fresh. I ordered the keftah kabob plate and two falafels, and my husband got a gyro wrap. Everything was so delicious. I loved all the different components that came on the plate, especially the cabbage salad and the pickled items. You get a lot of food, so the value feels great. First off service: what can I say about this place, it is great, the service is outstanding the man who helped us has a heart of gold. My family and I have already come back to this place after trying it for the first time. Now for the food: phenomenal! You get a hefty portion size. The presentation of my beef shawarma dish was very well done, it features beautiful colors with that bright Mediterranean glow of greens, yellows, reds, and even purples. Flavor of the food is so good and the whole dish is a journey that you want to complete. From the yummy hummus and pita bread, to the beautifully seasoned beef over yellow rice, moving to a light salad and pickles and top it off with a delicious lightly cooked tomato. It is an experience you want to have again. Sauces: I had dipped my beef in a red sauce that was provided that bursts with flavor and has a nice kick of heat, but it's not overpowering. I highly recommend trying it alongside your meal. Definitely support and keep supporting this business! I feel as though it is primarily treated as a to-go order place, which is fine, but if you ever get the chance, dine in. I came out from Orange County to visit my family in Yucaipa before Christmas and I wanted something more homemade and real than all of the fast food or heavy restaurants out there. My mom found Damasco and knew how much I love this type of food. She drove down and ordered in person and got my the combo plate with chicken and beef plate, with a side of grape leaves, and tzatziki. She said that when she ordered they were so nice and very accommodating. The food is made to order so she had to wait a bit but that was no problem. She was glad to. There were a lot of pick up orders and the place was consistently busy, which I was happy to hear. I truly enjoyed my food! The chicken and beef were so flavorful and the rice was amazing. I loved the grilled tomato and all the pickled veggies. The tzatziki with the pita bread was delicious. The grape leaves were fresh and very tasty. We told my aunt and uncle about it, since it was their house we were staying at, and how they absolutely have to go eat there. Next time I'm out there I will definitely go here again. read more

My daughter and I dropped my granddaughters off at girl Scout camp in Yucaipa this evening. Before heading home, we wanted to stop for dinner. We found this Mediterranean restaurant on Yelp and decided to check it out. It's a small and humble restaurant, but such a gem! The food was outstanding! Rojeh was incredibly welcoming and made us feel at home. I ordered a Diet Coke with my meal, my daughter ordered a cup of the Syrian tea. It was so aromatic, I ditched my coke and ordered a pot of tea. It was brought out in the most beautiful kettle. I felt like royalty drinking it. What a great little find! Dining here gives you a great opportunity for some wonderful Syrian food. Small town Yucaipa, located in Apple Country at the base of the magnificent San Bernardino mountains, is delightfully quaint, with a very small, historic downtown filled with many coffee houses and antique stores. But, each year, before April 15th, Mr. B and I hop in our car and head to Yucaipa to shiver and shake as our devoted tax preparer does some kind of mumbo jumbo on all our tax documents. Afterward, we always look for a stiff cup of coffee and/or a tasty meal, to soothe our souls. Being our first visit to Damasco, I admit, the first impressions were a bit rough. Damasco is located in an aging strip mall that is quite battered and neglected, hidden in a residential area outside the historic district. Dollar Tree is the anchor. But food- seekers such as myself know that these are the kinds of places where treasures are to be found. Damasco fits snugly in that category. Don't let outward appearances keep you from discovering the little culinary jewel that hides inside. You will see two entrances. The one on the right leads to the to-go order side and kitchen. The one on the left is the entry for a small dining room with 15 tables. While rather stark in decor, you will find fresh flowers on each table, exoticly patterned tablecloths, and authentic Middle Eastern music videos and cooking shows on the TVs in the dining room. It's clean and neat. Josh is the owner and head chef, an immigrant from Syria many years ago. His finesse with creating drool-worthy Syrian cuisine is quite impressive, growing up in a family that has been in the restaurant business for at least 45 years. He is warm, delightful, and very welcoming. The menu offers nice choices that cover a wide range of budgets. My first surprise was realizing the real menu's prices were much less than what I had expected. This impression was no thanks to my reading the excessive (30% higher) menu prices posted by Grub Hub, especially the Lamb Chops, an absolute must with Mr. B. I had nearly talked myself out of eating here. But, ignore the GrubHub menu. Unfortunately, there is no website or recent Yelp menu pictures to set things right. The Lamb Chop dinner came on a huge dinner platter. The meal consisted of a generous pile of yellow rice pilaf, a cold, cooked cabbage salad, Persian pickles, traditional pink marinated radish, a grilled tomato, a lovely pool of homemade hummus (and pita chips) drizzled with fine olive oil, and the 4 prime lamb chops, nicely grilled. The Chicken Kabob meal had the same sides and 8 tender chunks of marinated chicken breast that were lightly charred and moist. Both were great! The obligatory, creamy garlic sauce was excellent. Josh also provided a cup of his unusual spiced "catsup" sauce, house-made, that regular catsup haters like myself can not resist. You will enjoy both. On a small table near the front door, there was a stack of small containers containing homemade baklava. In my family, that is impossible to ignore and can lead to a temporary black-out, with a few sweet, buttery crumbs on our lips as the only forensic evidence once we regain consciousness. So, of course, we bought one container, the pistachio-filled one. And after we had put all our leftovers (Yes!) in containers to go, we took a nibble of that dessert for the gods. This baklava was some of the best I've ever had... made lovingly like they had made it for their own family...huge, thick mouthfuls made of buttery filo, packed with nuts, then soaked in a very light, honey syrup. It was delicate, not sweet, and exceptional. Josh then surprised us with a tiny cup each of cardamom espresso, on the house, to chase down that lovely pastry. A perfect ending to a delightful meal. I would not hesitate to return. This is a wonderful adventure, well worth seeking out. Thank you, Josh, for making our day so special. read more
