A Yelp search for 'Best Fish & Chips in NYC' brought me to Dame. After a long work week, nothing sounded better than this comfort classic. I made a reservation for a Monday evening around 8pm. Even at this time, reservations were scarce. It's not a very large restaurant so I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. I ordered the Sourdough Bread & Butter, and the Squid & Scallion Skewers to start. The bread was crispy and tasty; a solid sourdough, but wasn't anything overly unique. The skewers were herbaceous and light. The green sauce was super flavorful - especially when dipped into by that sourdough. For my main I ordered the Fish & Chips (of course). Were they extremely good? YES. Were they the best Fish & Chips I've ever eaten? No, however this accolade belongs to an actual Chippy I ate at in the UK. As far as 'restaurant' Fish & Chips go however - these are the probably the best I've eaten. The fish was expertly fried and super crispy. The chips were thick cut and well-salted. My only complaint is there wasn't more of them. An extra handful of chips and you wouldn't see the bottom of the plate in photos - just sayin! For dessert I got the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Now this WAS the best Sticky Toffee Pudding I've ever had. Extremely flavorful. Extremely sweet. Would be perfect for two to share. As a solo diner, it was pushing my sweet tooth to eat the entire thing. But naturally, I did. The service was great. Super personable and attentive. I was seated at the counter overlooking the kitchen. Watching the chefs prepare every dish was fascinating and entertaining to watch. Definitely recommend this place! read more

A seafood centric restaurant? That's what Dame is. This has been on my list for ages and finally snagged a res to check it out. The resto itself is pretty tiny - probably why reservations are so hard to come by. As for the food, lots of seafood options. 1. The oysters were good albeit very rich 2. Sourdough was actually great especially with their cultured butter 3. Squid skewers were probably my fave. Perfectly cooked. That green sauce is herby springy and zingy. 4. Cucumber salad was pretty good. I liked the smoked mussels 5. Tuna was also good not much to say about it 6. Kedgeree was... just alright. I could have skipped this tbh. The rice had a bit of bite to it which I actually kinda liked. My friends thought it felt undercooked. It's basically just like rice soaked in a light curry 7. Sticky toffee / date pudding: I was excited for this since I've heard all about how Dame makes a banging one but this kinda fell short for me. The vanilla bean (sour) cream didn't really do it. Sour cream with a sweet dessert? I suppose it was to cut the sweetness but hmm... I've had much better sticky dates elsewhere Service was good. A small space in the heart of the Greenwich Village in NYC, Dame serves modern English fare with solid service all around. The menu may be on the smaller side, but everything on it was well seasoned, super flavorful. In fact, everyone pretty much orders the same things, table after table, that each time we saw an order we thought it was ours but it was going to another table... which, to us, meant this kitchen team likely has their dishes perfected. For us, it definitely seemed that way ! We tried the Negroni and the vieux carré cocktails, both made well that we enjoyed two of each. We tried the oysters, squid skewers, grilled cabbage, and tuna tartare smaller plates - all delicious! For mains, we got the monkfish and the fish and chips - succulent in every bite, and a nice portion for both overall. Then, for dessert, we got the Salisbury Steak.... Jk, it was a sticky toffee pudding (it just looks like a steak in pics!), which is typically my favorite dessert, hands-down anywhere. And here at Dame? We've been wanting to come here for awhile and it was definitely worth the wait. The fish and chips were every thing and more! We have been ruined for all others. We had the squid skewers as an appetizer and they were delicious, especially the sauce. Nice selection of beer and the vibe is casual yet special. The fish and chips really was that good. I'd come back just for that! Sticky toffee pudding was also delightful - I loved that it was a crust to it. The caramel sauce was too sweet for me but the crème fraiche helped (just wish there was more). The monk fish rice was not the best way of preparing monk fish IMHO - it ended up a bit mushy with I didn't think the flavor combo was good. I saw a video recommending this place as the best fish and chips in NYC and had to check it out. It might be the only fish and chips I've tried in NYC, but I'll take their word for it. The fish was fantastic- perfectly crunchy on the outside and insanely soft and fluffy on the inside. The flavor was perfect, with any fishiness balanced out by the lemon and tartar sauce, and no egregious oiliness. The thick cut fries were similarly expertly fried, and crispier than any chips I've tried before. It's a small shop, and maybe a bit crowded, but I enjoyed the ambiance. What the team at Dame has accomplished in such a tiny space is truly a wonder and a joy. While our dinner had a couple minor misses, our overall experience was really excellent. The service was the best we've experienced in a long time. Our server was an impeccable professional, welcoming and knowledgeable, with great recommendations. She took our entire experience up several notches. As first-timers, we ordered the two dishes that appear most popular: the squid and scallion skewers and the fish & chips. At our servers recommendation, we added the kedgeree curry rice with crab. Unfortunately, our squid was a little overcooked and underseasoned, so we didn't have the greatest start to the meal. However, the fish and chips lived up to our high expectations. Definitely a can't miss. The rice dish was also excellent, with richness and great spice (as well as being spicy), just a bit on the small side. We ended the meal with a delightful Brooklyn grape and chamomile tart. Elegant and refreshing, it made a great close to a dinner with dishes on the heartier side. We sat at the counter and so got a clear appreciation of how much Dame accomplishes with so little space. I'd recommend sitting closer to the kitchen end for a better view, but nonetheless we enjoyed the counter experience. And we loved the vibe set by the 90s pop played throughout service. Tiny but mighty! I've walked by this spot a few times but it's overshadowed by it's popular neighbor, Dante. I'm obsessed with summer tomatoes and saw on their IG they had a heirloom tomato sandwich til the end of the month and knew I had to have it. We weren't lucky to get resys, but grabbed a drink next door while waiting for them to open on a Friday evening. I walked over to ask how long the wait would be and the host had an outdoor table. The weather was perfect and the sidewalk wasn't chaotic so we agreed. Although their menu is small, they had a ton of options we wanted to try. We ended up getting a fantastic bottle of Basque wine and 6 dishes to share. We got the oysters, sourdough bread with anchovies, zucchini blossoms, scallop and tomato skewers, heirloom tomato sandwich and the curried crab rice. There wasn't anything I didn't like. Everything was so fresh and bright plus paired well with the wine we chose. The staff was amazing and so friendly. Everyone we talked to was great and it's refreshing to have engaged staff. We've been to a few spots recently where the staff could care less. You can tell the people here really enjoy the food as well. We can't wait to go back for the massive fish and chips. read more

I ate here about a month ago with a friend. Oh my goodness, their fish and chips are AMAZING! This is probably the best fish and chips I've ever had. The sticky toffee pudding was almooost perfect. The sea salt they sprinkled on top made it too salty and they needed some vanilla ice cream or some kind of vanilla sauce to cut the sweetness. Dame is a British bar/restaurant, came here after a visit to their sister restaurant Lord's. Vibes felt a bit more upbeat and upscale here like a bistro. Staff were welcoming and very efficient in this tight area that still seeming accommodated many guests. I went with the crumpet with rarebit sauce - it was fine but I didn't really taste the rarebit sauce, not sure if it was buried by other ingredients or not enough. The leeks with anchovies was solid and I didn't really taste much fishiness. The sauce was tasty. Finally the fish and chips - I'm not much of a fish and chips person but had to try with the high praise it gets - again as someone who doesn't seek out or eat much fishiness and chips it was a solid dish and with the chips, but didn't find it memorable. I probably need to visit the UK and taste more fish and chips here for comparison but it wasn't really that noteworthy for me, I think it's just purely personal taste. It has a nice fried crisp and bit of oily taste and was tender inside. The accompanying sauce went good with chips. Came here specifically for the fish & chips, it didn't disappoint. It clearly is the best fish & chips in nyc for a reason. The fish is crazy moist and plump in terms of portion size. The chips are properly crispy with as much fried surface area as possible. I don't think i can be exceeded other than maybe adding a little more seasoning to the fish, but it was otherwise excellent. The sticky toffee pudding was just ok, it needed ice cream on top instead of creme fresh, but they don't have a freezer. Service could have been slightly more attentive for a small restaurant, considering the menu isn't big or confusing. I'd go back if I'm in terms mood for fish & chips. read more

Dame is a rare British seafood seafood restaurant and has been on my list for years to try. They specialize in fish and chips (were solid), but they have a nice variety of different seafood small plates to try. Some better than others. The kedgeree with curry monkfish was a highlight, though wish there was a little more fish for the price. Same with the skate cheeks, which was a super tiny portion for $24. The photogenic squid skewers were a bit lacking for me, but the cucumber with smoked mussels were fab. So it was up and down for me, but overall I liked it. Very tiny inside, so would recommend coming with 2, maybe 4 people. Don't think they can accommodate a party larger than that. I recommend giving it a try if you like seafood! read more

A friend and I were able to get a 5:30p reservation at Dame on a Saturday. We were seated at the high top/communal table near the window. For drinks I went standard with wine, but they have a nice array of options for any palates. Foodwise, we went with the sourdough, grilled oysters, squid and scallion skewers, snap pea salad with crab, and fish/chips. Everything was amazing honestly. As a seafood lover, all the options were fresh, flavorful but simple. Nothing was over seasoned or greasy. We left comfortably full. Ambiance is great. It's a cute, tiny place but not noisy. The playlist they had going was fun and made for great background music. Waitstaff was wonderful as well. Attentive and kind throughout the meal. Overall, Dame is an excellent restaurant. TLDR: I would order the fish and chips and skip the rest. We were able to walk-in and get a table out of the two outside or wait until 9pm for inside seating due to the popularity of the spot. I felt like the garnish was not a good accessory to the scallop and the green oil was very limited in depth or variety of flavor. Sourdough & butter - the most crispiest bread i've ever had! almost so crispy i was afraid of breaking a tooth. your run of the mill bread with your run of the mill butter. needed more butter, butter needed more salt - in fact, maybe everything needed more salt. Fish and Chips - the main attraction (and for good reason!) the most well-thought out dish in my opinion. the fish was very light with excellent fry on it. you can really tell the chef did well thinking everything else (thinking of the very light and specific beer used to batter). the bigger chunks in the tartare sauce. the crispiness of the chips, which yielded both meat and an excellent crunch. my only drawback was that we had to ask for more tartar sauce -- a small issue but what is with the disproportionate nature of all of these adornments? overall, more than i'd like to spend on a meal that was for the most part lackluster outside of the main attraction. i would likely not dine-in again, but perhaps would order the fish and chips to-go next time. read more

I've been wanting to visit Dame for years, but reservations continue to be exceptionally hard to come by*. Now that I've eaten here, I totally get why: casually competent service, cozy/intimate environs, and exceptional execution on the cuisine round out a truly delightful dining experience. As evidenced by the special callout on their menu, the fish and chips are easily the star of the show. Having lived in London for a couple years and enjoying this dish around the UK and Ireland, I can confirm that Dame's rendition is superb and deserving of all the praise that's already been lavished upon it. There must be some chef-y alchemy at work to execute the shatteringly crisp crust on each fillet. It's even more impressive that the batter sticks so well to the meat. More often than not, once you bite into a dish like this, you rapidly end up with two disparate entities on your plate: naked seafood and an empty starch wrapper. That wasn't the case here. Also, I'm assuming the tartar sauce didn't come out of a squeeze bottle. Even that offered layers of flavor that surprised and delighted. Assuming we manage to score seats on a return visit, I'd skip the blowfish tails. They were novel, but didn't awe to the level of our other dishes. The other highlight of our meal was the tuna tartare. It was easily one of the best versions I've had in memory. Dame's a super cute neighborhood spot that I hope sticks around for awhile. I'd come back in a heartbeat (especially if someone else is willing to go through the hassle of snagging resos). * I suspect that the only reason we were able to score last-minute day-of reservations was because the weather was unseasonably warm for early November. Perhaps Dame wasn't anticipating it'd be nice enough to set up outdoor dining until the last minute. We ended up taking advantage of sidewalk seating and comfortably dined in t-shirts. I had tried skate for the first time as well here, an interesting fish but it didnt stand out to me in any way. Some of the better items were the curried monkfish and the squid and shishito skewers. Had heard excellent things from the NYTimes and The Infatuation about Dame so figured I'd give it a shot now that the hype and difficulty of securing a reservation died down. The restaurant itself is still extremely small, with about 20 or so seats and I appreciate that Resy gives you the heads up on your table experience. Unfortunately, they don't tell you that the non-back chairs means sitting at a communal table (of about 6 people) which would have been helpful to know - especially if you're the unlucky one in the middle of two pairs. On the food, the skewers were excellent and filled with umami flavor. Perfectly cooked, they were extremely juicy and a great pairing - even at $14 a pop. Their most notable dish, fish & chips, was excellent as well and was fresh and flavorful. The fish was cooked well, without being too dry or crispy and the chips (fries) were large and satisfying. Unfortunately I couldn't say the same about the other dishes, such as the curried crab rice which fell flat and was extremely one-dimensional. Dessert was tasty, although not the most visually appetizing and the lobster salad could have been passed on as well. One of the best solo dining experiences I've had this year. As someone who has attempted quite a few ways to cook an oyster and orders every dressed oyster variety available at a restaurant, Dame's Hollandaise preparation might be the absolute best. What they're churning out in this tiny space with a kitchen the size of a toddler's playpen is probably best enjoy by solo diners, but you'll wish you could bring the whole family. Having spent a good amount of time in England, I truly never thought a place in NYC that specialized in fish & chips would be all that special. Dame proved me wrong. The menu is a bit limited and it's mostly (all?) seafood, which I am for. The space is very small (especially apparent when you try to use the bathroom!) so definitely need a reservation. We sat at the kitchen counter seating and the service was shockingly quick (especially how quickly the food came out). They recommend 4-7 dishes for two: Started with the grilled oysters: these were delicious and torched before our eyes. However, at $5 each, could've skipped. Squid & scallion skewers: this is apparently all the rave and I get it. The char of the squid was excellent and the sauce (no clue what it is) did wonders for the scallions. Whitefish croquettes with the chili oil sauce: This was my favorite of the night. The outside was so perfectly crispy and the inside so perfectly soft yet not mushy. And the chili oil sauce was a fascinating choice that worked well with what could be a blander white fish. Heirloom potatoes with the lobster: This was mintier than I expected but appreciated the mix of tomatoes used. Wish there were more lobster pieces, though. The crunch was unexpected but seemed necessary. Grilled blowfish tails: This was probably my least favorite, mostly because I hate small bones in fish. You're given the option of eating like a chicken wing or using utensils and I recommend the latter. The flavoring is quite nice once you get the meat off the many small bones. FIsh & chips: Truly amazing. The chips were so nicely done and it was a good portion of them (surprising since some of the other dishes were on the smaller side). But truly the star was the exquisitely fried white fish. So tender but with an amazing crisp. Added some malt vinegar just for fun but really could have eaten the fish as it. The price is on the heftier side but not terrible for the area (albeit we did not venture into drinks as the prices there were astronomical). Absolutely worth the try. read more

Third visit to Dame and damn, it's always a great time. We ordered a bunch of new plates off their summer menu: - Morels stuffed with Shrimp (4.5/5) - fresh, acidic dressing engulfed the morels stuffed with shrimp. Great start to the meal. This was in the top two for others in ny part of three. - Zucchini Squash with Peekytoe Crab (5/5) - my favorite item of the night. The green onion soubise with the fresh basil and the garlic breadcrumbs add a majestic and delicious complexity to the dish. - Skate Entree (4/5) - almost a 5/5 if the green sauce hadn't been under salted. Loved the cook, texture and taste on the skate fish. - Fish and Chips (repeat order) - this time however, I found both, the fish and chips, oilier than usual. Hence a 4/5. Side note, I do wish they served mushy peas with this to create the holistic English FnC vibes. - Sourdough Bread and Butter (5/5) - another repeat order. Nothing to fault. Lovely meal. Food is AMAZING, service is wonderful. A little confused on our second reservation so we have to wait outside for nearly 40 minutes starting at 9 PM . Regardless, the food and friendly staffs are make up for it. The Squids, deserts, fish & chips, oysters are the best! The few blocks of MacDougal St. south of Washington Square Park are jammed with restaurants and comedy clubs. Dame is a tiny, tasty English seafood spot here. The Mermaid Oyster Bar is next door. Dame has 5 tables, one communal high top and 7 bar seats, plus 4 tables outside. The bar separates the dining area from the open kitchen. Reservations can be a challenge due to its small size. Pretty much everyone orders the fish and chips. I started with the whitefish salad atop fried polenta, topped with trout roe; tasty but slightly fishy. I got one grilled oyster (they're $5 each) to try, and it was excellent, topped with a green hollandaise. I'll order more next time. The fish and chips were also very good They use hake, a firm white fish. The breading was super-crisp and not too heavy, the chips were proper. Tartar sauce, lemon, ketchup and malt vinegar were available. The dessert selection is small--eton mess or a sticky toffee pudding. I got the eton mess, which appeared to me to be more like a pavlova--a crisp meringue shell topped with custard and a passionfruit-rhubarb compote--very tasty no matter what you call it. A last minute decision to visit Dame turned out to be an unexpected highlight. Typically, reservations here are snapped up well in advance, but luck was on our side. The setting is intimate with just a few tables and an open kitchen with a ton of energy. The staff orchestrates the meal with precision, each course arriving at just the right moment. The menu is spare, but tightly curated. We ordered the green asparagus with smoked whitefish brandade, the tuna tartare with bottarga on toast, the signature fish and chips, and the sourdough bread with butter. The standout? Without question, the tuna tartare. Close behind was the fish and chips, a beautifully battered piece of flaky white fish, which more than earns its reputation. If one dish fell short, it was the asparagus and white fish brandade. While each component of the dish was solid, it lacked a defining element to give it a distinct edge. Love the fish and chips, tuna tartare and oysters. The restaurant has a small interior, so definitely get a reservation. The one dish that I did not care too much for is the lobster salad as there are not too many pieces of lobster meat in that salad, and it tastes like the lettuce leaves are the main character instead. read more
