You know when Mike C. says something is really good, it's likely going to be worth your time. I went to Dame with a taste for proper fish & chips, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! Ambiance is important, and this place has a lot of character. The outdoor seating is cute and makes you think of a veranda or lanai in 1980's Florida with the retro patio furniture and its kitschy flower boxes filled little plastic flowers. The inside is completely different with its classic, European market decor. I can see they take great care in curating the space, I even got a Satsuma! The friendly lady at the counter even offered me a glass of water. The food didn't take long and it was obviously made to order, because it was so fresh and hot. When I say this is the best fish and chips you will ever eat, I mean it. It was amazing! It was a hefty filet lightly battered and fried to perfection with the thickest fries I've had in a long time. I was fully after about half si I took the rest home and enjoyed it the next day. The only issue is, its far fir my house, lol. "this is my favorite spot in the city right now" - my girlfriend small place, great vibe, great staff, creative food well executed --what more could you ask for? Came here for a spontaneous date night. Found a 9:15pm reservation at the counter and they were super accommodating when the 6 train was 15 minutes behind. The crew behind the kitchen is as small as the restaurant and promotes a warm, cozy feel - especially when you're sitting at the counter. The menu is short and sweet, with an equal portion of heavy and light dishes. The chef clearly made a concerted attempt to lighten otherwise heavy offerings which is important because I'm sure literally everyone gets the fish and chips and it would be difficult for a party of two to enjoy another heavy dish. The dishes were creative and fresh, and the fish and chips was spectacular. Nothing special - just a really good fish and chips. Dinner came out to ~80pp with t/t and a drink. One of the more overrated places I have been to in nyc. They seem like they are trying too hard to be unique. We tried the skate cheek kebab which was ok but kind of bland. The fish and chips weren't bad. The chips were some of the best around. The fish part needed to be crispier. For appetizers we tried the squash app with crab and tarragon... it wasn't good. The mussels with cucumber was bad and had a weird texture. The olive cake was ok at best. I will say everything was beautifully plated. We went to three fabulous restaurants in New York on this short trip and Dane was definitely our favorite restaurant, (outranking Momofuko ko). Everything was unbelievably delicious. We had the grilled oysters twice, Those were hands down the best oysters I've ever had. We also loved the grilled squid, the skate cheek kebabs with the yogurt and the Manila clams. Of course we ordered the fish and chips. Better than anywhere on the planet, these fish and chips blew my mind. We loved the poached pears and our cocktails. Dame didn't disappoint. The latest incarnation of the Dame popup is very different from the first one I went to, but also incredible, with must try food from chef Ed Szymanski. While the first one was a sit-down a la carte and/or tasting menu in a cramped coffee shop, that setup is now a distant memory in Covid times. This is a walk-up and order situation, with newly added outdoor seats, and a small menu of excellent food (plus lots of drinks). The Fish & Chips ($18) is probably the best I've had, and similarly the Fried Fish Sandwich ($14) makes for a very satisfying meal. There is also a Tomato Sandwich ($10), and don't skip both desserts, including the Eton Mess ($8) and Ice Cream from Red Gate Bakery. Not only is the food some of the best you can eat right now during these crazy times, these good people are also donating all profits to worthy organizations in need right now, so it's a no-brainer to go support them as much as possible this summer before they eventually, hopefully, figure out a way to open the permanent location they have been planning for. My friend and I had been talking about trying Dame for slightly over a year before the dinner actually happened. The wait was, of course, due to the impossibility of getting a reservation. We finally went on Resy 3 weeks prior to the date we wanted, set our alarms for 11:59am, refreshed for an entire minute, and then scored a 7:45pm bar reservation on a Friday. After all of this, expectations were high - but we left the meal fully satisfied! The recommendation was to get 4 smaller plates and 2 larger plates. We knew this would be too much so we got 3 small plates and 1 large - even this was a little much, but I wouldn't have wanted to cut anything! Every single thing we ordered was excellent - tuna tartare and bottarga on toast, squid skewers, grilled cabbage with mussels (which they made dairy free for me, thank you thank you!!!), and the fish and chips. Each dish was delicious, expertly prepared, and I thought the pacing of when they were brought out was perfect. Had some of the bread to soak up sauces too - and the bread was SO good. A nice bottle of wine from the Austin Powers side of the wine list tied it all together. Vibes at the bar were also great! I would absolutely come back to Dame doing the reservation the same way. I would not wait in line on a Monday for several hours, but I don't think it's necessary to! All in, spent about $115, so it isn't an every day place, but left very happy. Shoutout to the best roommate for getting a res here! It's one of the hardest reservations to get in NYC, so I suggest preparing for it a few weeks in advance. That being said, the food here is mind-blowing, some of the best seafood I've had, ever. My roommate and I shared 7 plates (including dessert). I suggest this approach because the more you can try here, the better. Here is what we had: 1. Oysters - highlight of the meal; they were perfectly seasoned with a soft chewy texture that sent me to heaven 2. Tuna tartare on toast - second favorite; the cubes of tuna literally melted in my mouth 3. Smoked whitefish croquettes - lovely texture; paired well with a spicy red sauce 4. Squid and scallion skewers - squid was perfectly crispy; paired well with an unique green sauce; only reservation here was the scallions, which didn't seem to add much to the dish 5. Fish & chips - the speciality here and absolutely excellent; the fish had the texture of a cloud 6. Kedgeree rice with curried crab - the gravy for the crab was thick, flavorful, and not too spicy 7. Blueberry tart: I have no words for how insanely soft, flavorful, and subtly sweet this was - don't sleep on the dessert here Overall, I would highly recommend this spot to anybody looking for a seafood meal that will leave them wanting more. My pescatarian palate loves a restaurant dedicated to seafood, but as soon as I set my sights on their reservation site is when a NYT review extolling the virtues of this restaurant was published, leaving me with nary a chance at dining here. Trying to reserve a table was like trying to buy concert tickets--- I played whack a mole with the time slots and missed every time, until one day I got a 10pm table, the last of the evening. Their super compact menu indicated careful intention with each dish that took up precious real estate on that one pager-- the dishes that leapt out to me were the squid & scallion skewers, grilled cabbage with anchovy & gouda, smoked whitefish croquettes, and the famous fish & chips. I will say that the fish & chips which propelled them to local fame was the most boring dish on the table. Sure the portion was huge, fish was fresh, and the batter nice and crispy-- but the flavor depended on the vinegar you had to generously coat the fish with in order to taste anything but fried, flavorless batter. I find fish & chips overall a monotonous dish, and the famous one here didn't change my mind about that. Everything else was quite delicious though, especially the grilled cabbage. Dame also has a nice compact list of cocktails and an impressive long list of wines. I stuck with a cocktail and a cider, which went really well with all the food and great, patient service. They're set to open another restaurant called Lord's soon, and I look forward to the new concept this team has in store for the NY seafood scene. read more

I've been told this place has the best fish and chips, so was very excited to try it out. Reservations were hard to come by and I had to book this place about 2 weeks out. The restaurant is very small so I would say only slim beautiful people should eat there. If you're big, you'll feel like sitting in the middle seat in the coach section of an airplane. While the waitstaff was generally accommodating, the waiter that served us seemed abit unfriendly, and he forgot to write down a dish. I would skip the bread and butter, it's nothing outstanding but is a cheap option to fill your belly for $5 (you might as well try something else since you can do this at home for less). The butterbean salad was too salty (the dressing should have been lighter and did not have to be so salty since the anchovy is very salty), so the bread did help with cutting the sodium. The best thing we tried was the squid and scallion skewers, it was prepared well, tender and tasty. The fish and chips was the largest dish, and it came out crispy and flaky. I did not enjoy it because the oil they used to fry this was not fresh, which gave the dish a dark color overall. I would not order it again, but if you're coming here the first time, I would say it is a must try as their signature dish. read more

By some miracle, I saw that there was a prime opening for the Friday after Labor Day and grabbed it so I wouldn't have to spend another Monday waiting in a long line to get a table. We decided to order all the dishes we were eyeing but didn't have a chance to try on our first visit, except for the oysters, which are a most order every time no matter what. My oyster was just as delicious as I remembered it the first time, so I hope they keep these on the menu forever (it changes every few weeks). This time, our favorites were the grilled squid and scallion skewers and the grilled monkfish large plate. We also ordered the mussels and cucumber salad and raw scallop and melon small plates, which were also very good, but not outstanding. I imagine my opinion of the scallop dish may have been different if my palate hadn't already been overwhelmed by the heavier sauces of the other dishes and the herbaceousness of the skewers, so I think it was a mis-step to serve that dish after the others had already come out. We ordered the bread to wipe up the sauces from the small plates, which was a good move as it was phenomenal and there was indeed a lot of sauce. Ironically, the Eton Mess for dessert was the highlight of our meal. It was delightfully refreshing and I loved the combo of berries and cream with meringue. Stunning presentation, too. So dessert is a must here, but I would skip the alcohol menu, or go with a glass of wine. The cocktails are nothing special, we tried the Pimm's Cup and it was okay, but I would have expected more creative drinks to go with the inventive food. Service was top notch and everyone is super friendly and helpful. Absolutely love the staff here as much as the food. Accessibility: Despite some challenges stemming from being located in an old tiny space, the folks at Dame have the right attitude towards accessibility. I was given a choice of tables outdoors (I specifically asked to sit outside) and there was plenty of space for me to park my chair next to the table on the patio. There are no steps to go inside, though most of the low tables are booths. They keep doors and windows open for good ventilation. The bathroom is tiny and not accessible, but they have an arrangement with Mermaid Inn next door, which does have a more accessible restroom, which while not perfect (the location of the sink may make it difficult for some to do a side transfer), it worked well for me. I really appreciated this proactive solution because most of the time I get a "Sorry" and a shrug, making it my problem to figure out. read more

Food is okay, service is good and ambiance is....small. We scored 8pm reservations at the counter on a Tuesday night and upon walking in we immediately saw why it's so hard to score a reservation: it sits all of 40 ppl at full capacity. The best dish was the trout with uni and peppers covered in what looks like a poached egg but is actually sabayon (aerated hollandaise if you gave the same face i gave when he said it -confusion ensues-) it was perfect. Do not get the blowfish unless youre into pulling a gazillion tiny bones out of your mouth while still trying to get fish meat off. The fish and chips (which this restaurant is known for) were in my opinion just okay. They were def the better fish and chips I've had but it's not enough to get me to come back. The desserts were okay, definitely share the toffee amongst 3-4 people because between the two of us it was still too much. All in all, I'd say if you can get a reservation without trying, give this a shot but by no means should you sit at your desk at 11:59am frantically refreshing the page to get those coveted reservations at 12pm 3 weeks in advance. Dame is a shockingly good British inspired seafood restaurant. The space is small and cozy but never felt cramped and the wait staff were lovely without ever feeling overbearing. We started the meal out with the grilled oysters with green chartreuse hollandaise sauce. The oysters themselves were a bit small but my god, the hollandaise sauce was absolutely fantastic. I'm quite thankful that chefs are starting to practice more what bartenders have been preaching for years, chartreuse just makes things tasty. I would have been happier with meatier oysters but the hollandaise was just so damn good that we were excited for the every dish that came out next. We were recommended the sourdough bread with butter to mop up sauce with and although I am a tad miffed at paying for bread, I am completely fine with it if it is as good as this. Super thick slices of flavorful, grilled sourdough bread with a smear of perfectly softened butter. Suffice to say, we happily soaked up every plate of sauce we could with the bread. The squid and scallion skewers tasted exactly as expected but was just executed very well which is something I felt with for a great deal of the dishes here. Scallions blackened, squid charred till just tender, all perfectly seasoned and topped with a green sauce that just wakes things up enough. The raw scallop, melon, and fig leaf oil was quite neat, scallops were just luscious little pillows of meat and the sauce and fig leaf oil gave everything a grassy, bittersweet note which I was quite a fan of. Tuna tartare and bottarga on toast was served on the same great bread. Tuna is really meaty and just tasted super fresh and bottarga is an always welcome source of salinity and savoriness. Grilled summer squash with crab and tarragon was okay, crab was light and crabby but I remain a non-believer in summer squash. At most other restaurants, I would be quite happy with it but here it was just kind of okay. In terms of mains, we just had the fish and chips and the skate wing with chanterelles and corn because we heard so much about the fish and chips (and it's a good bit cheaper than the other mains). The skate wing was some of the best fish I have ever heard, certainly the best fish I've had cooked in the French style. Chanterelles were as good as chanterelles should naturally be and they were cooked to a wonderfully bouncy but tender texture and the corn was as sweet as summer corn should be. The skate wing had an absolutely lovely meaty texture and only just cooked through, we were literally picking bones clean for every scrap of meat. The pan sauce was also delicious, savory but brightened with enough acidity to feel fresh. The fish and chips are what most people are coming here for and I can confirm that it is, by a country mile, the best fish and chips I've ever heard. It is still very recognizably fish and chips but with an extremely light and crisp batter and super soft, tender fish. The chips, are thick but also crispy on the outside, the ideal structure of a British style chip. The tartare was quite nicely balanced and they also bring out a bottle of ketchup and malt vinegar as well, the malt vinegar was quite a bit less acidic and more savory than the standard commodity malt you typically find. I think my only complaint would be that the bits of chip under the fish got a bit soggy. I can kind of see it presentation wise, it does feel a bit more like the standard vibe of a fish and chip to have everything scattered underneath the fish but i was craving more perfect chips. We also had the sticky toffee pudding which was basically the best sticky toffee I've ever had. Toffee sauce was dark and rich caramel but flowed quite satisfyingly and the pudding was also dark and rich. They topped it with was seems to be creme fraiche which I ended up liking over the more standard vanilla ice cream. The tartness of the cream just helped quite a ton with balancing everything out without taking away from how indulgent the final dish felt. At this point, it's pretty clear I quite like this restaurant. The most pedantic complaint I can muster is that they need to stir their cocktails for longer, they are a bit too warm on serving and the ice they have in the cocktails is not particularly pretty compared to the garnish, especially for the Pimms cup. The cocktails themselves tasted solid, basically up to spec as standard recipe but they feel priced a touch high considering they are so standard. Honestly the mocktail menu looked more interesting on further review. even if they aren't making their own shrub, it would have been neat to see them use it for one of their cocktails. If this was a cocktail bar, these complains would carry a fair bit more weight but as is, I'm basically just grasping at straws finding a thing to dislike. If you enjoy seafood at all, you absolutely must pay a visit to Dame. read more

I didn't like Dame at all unfortunately, which was a shame considering how excited I was to get a prime reservation on a Friday evening. First, I checked in with the host, who wasn't able to find my reservation at first and was VERY snooty about it, almost implying that I wasn't "good enough" to eat there. I was appalled at the way I was treated before they found my name on their list, at which point the tone totally changed. I ordered calamari and the famous fish and chips. The calamari was gummy, tough, and barely edible. It was like chewing through tire rubber. Would not recommend it at all. The flavor from the sauce was tasty but not nearly good enough to counterbalance the texture of the squid. The fish and chips was underwhelming. A few weeks prior I had been at Disney's Epcot and ordered the fish and chips from the England pavilion and I kid you not - theme park fish and chips was better than Dame's. At $26 for not a huge portion, it's also wildly overpriced. This was a mediocre, expensive dinner with poor service. This was my second time at Dame and it's a serious, serious restaurant -- Probably top 5 in NY for me. As someone who's eaten through a majority of the menu after two visits -- you really can't go wrong. LOWS: Not many lows here -- thought the smoked whitefish croquettes weren't as flavorful on this visit but still delicious. Additionally think they can expand their cocktail offerings, though it's clear Dame's focus is wine and I will say I do appreciate that the cocktail list feels like a perfect pairing to the style of food (mostly gin based, earthy, clean, refreshing cocktails). One of the hardest reservation to get but I would say it's worth a try (whether it's worth revisiting is a different question). Most memorable dish is the grilled oysters as it was just such an unique flavor and no oysters I've had tasted like that. Dame is the quintessential NYC restaurant that gets pretentious as quickly as it got hot. The food was fine, but underwhelming, overpriced, and paired with horrendous service. We arrived on time for an 8:30 reservation. We were seated a little after 9. We waited over a half hour, standing awkwardly in the tiny, cramped restaurant. This was despite the fact that there were bar seats available with menus and hostess materials scattered across them -- the hostess told us they couldn't be moved. There was also a regular, two-sided booth available -- one of only two in the restaurant -- but management was using that to serve as storage for a few dozen glasses... So we waited... once eventually seated, our party of two squeezed into the only side of a one-sided booth with a table top too small to accommodate us both comfortably. Oh well. No other tables available... the normal two sided booth just had to hold all those glasses I suppose... While waiting the half hour after our reservation time for our table, we were offered some drinks... a nice gesture. But of course, they threw these on our already pricey bill at the end of the meal. Onto the food.. first we ordered the bread and butter. It took 15 minutes to come, but once finally received, it was good. The smoked whitefish croquettes and tuna tartare were outstanding. The radicchio salad with chopped egg, anchovies, and capers was swimming in dressing and ridiculously salty. We were drinking water all night. The dish was a wet mess. The fish and chips were good, but nothing special. A paltry, pathetic portion for the $30 price tag. It's one small piece of fried fish with French fries! Dame disappoints. It was bizarre. The space inside is small with only a few tables and a bar. The bathroom is tiny with a flimsy sliding door that doesn't lock. This is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC! Everything is delicious, the staff is amazing and the vibe of the restaurant is super chill. If I could continue to get reservations for this place I would go over and over again. Love it and my favorite are the grilled oysters, tuna tartare and fish and chips. I went to visit this place with some friends and we all split one takeout order of fish and chips because we found this place thru this YouTube video: https://youtu.be/JgA6GWAtIAo The video definitely made the fish and chips look super good which made us all want to try it. It's on the pricey side but I think it's understandable since they talked about using high quality ingredients in the video. I think you can say we had high expectations for this dish. After trying the dish I would say you can tell the fish is fresh and high quality. Also, it was lightly fried on the outside. The fries I think were just okay. I don't think I would come back to get it again. For me, it was one of those once in a lifetime experiences because my wallet can definitely not handle getting this dish more than once. I think its pretty good since fresh ingredients were used but I wouldn't say it was mind blowing good. Worth a try if you wanna splurge on quality fish and chips! read more

Hmmmm, it seems the reviews of this restaurant are on quite the opposite ends of the spectrum. Fortunately, I will be writing a pleasant one! First things first, if you do plan on coming here, check your iCal in advance because they have quite limited reservations. They release availabilities 3 weeks ahead apparently and I understand why after visiting tonight - its such a tiny place! Secondly, prepare to bring proof of your covid vaccination. The hostess does check with you before she allows you to be seated. I highly appreciate them being one of the few places in the city right now to take this initiative while many establishments are lagging behind. For starters I ordered the (apparently) controversial grilled oysters ($5ea), squid skewers ($14), tuna tartare on toast ($22), lobster tart ($36), bread and butter ($4), and eton mess ($12). Okay so for me the oysters tasted perfect. There was the smokiness from the grill, and the creaminess of the hollandaise (perf for dipping sourdough). No vodka shots here (please refer to other disgruntled reviews of oysters). The squid was also cooked nicely, tender, with a hint of lemon and char. The tuna tartare was very good. Nice sized chunks of fish, umami from the bottarga, all on top of an almost crostini like toast with an aioli type spread in between. The lobster tart. Oof. I had to stop myself from inhaling this thing. Gorgeous lobster, corn, and morels piled on top of the best puff pastry I've had in this week/month/year/life? Although, one thing I did notice was the menu saying it had snap peas while mine had green beans. So together, the corn and green beans felt like a...Green Giant situation (???) that detracted from the lobster. However, I would still recommend this as a must try! The hostess recommend the Eton mess for dessert. She described it to me as a whipped panna cotta with berries and meringue pieces. The meringue chunks are sprinkled with bits of different crushed peppercorn, which adds an interesting hint to your bite. Would recc all the dishes I listed above. Although I had gotten their fish and chips over the summer, I wanted to try Chef Ed's dinner creations. It's a really tiny space that seats no more than 10 people indoors, so most of the seating is actually in an outdoor structure that, while sheltered, won't do much if it's actually raining. Nevertheless, the outdoor setup is pleasant and while you are right next to traffic, given how tight Macdougal Street is, cars aren't really whizzing by. *Standouts* - tuna tartare with bottarga and toast: Fresh and succulent tuna chunks showered in a rain of bottarga on sourdough bread that's chewy with a crunchy crust. - cucumber salad with smoked mussels and dill: Well-balanced flavors and textures, I love the smokiness combined with the fresh cucumber and dill flavors. - fish and chips: immaculately cooked as always, with a light and crisp batter, tender fish, and the chips are well-seasoned and crisp. It is still fish and chips, so there's nothing mindblowing or innovative about it, but it is one of the finest specimens of its variety. *Good* - grilled mackerel with new potatoes and mint: I thought this was a little too oily, and the skin was not as crisp as it could be, but the little potatoes were smashed and fried and had little morsels of fluffiness woven in between crisp and crunch. - sourdough bread and butter: they give you three half-slices of a boule. Just keep that in mind if you have a table larger than 3; you'll be fighting over the slices. - eton mess: The meringue, strawberry, and custard trifle was a simple classic done well. I think the same custard was used in the tart, so depending on whether you like meringue or butter pastry shell, that'll help you decide. - cherry and elderflower custard tart: I think the thin pastry shell here was outstanding and I loved the succulent and macerated cherries. *didn't care for* - Oysters with green chartreuse hollandaise, $5 each: This dish was set on fire tableside, but unfortunately my oyster just tasted way too boozy. I didn't like the flavors together at all and it brought out the worst in the booze and the oyster. - warm lobster tart with morels and snap peas: I was expecting a harder crunchier tart shell, but what I got was more of a fluffy and soggy Yorkshire pudding/popover situation. The lobster was overcooked and a bit rubbery and was not accentuated by the morels and snap peas. Service is a bit off; and after the first round of smaller plates, the hot food took a while to come out. And yet we had to be rushed out after our 1.5 hour time slot was up. read more

After waiting for weeks with Resy notify set, we were super excited to snag a table at Dame. However, the entire meal was pretty underwhelming, and overpriced for the portion sizes. The grilled oysters arrived lukewarm instead of hot off the grill, and the hollandaise sauce didn't work well as an accoutrement. We found that the chartreuse liquor wasn't cooked off well, and the whole experience read like taking a shot of vodka. The whitefish croquettes were decent. The squid and shishito skewers were also fine, but they were tiny for the price point. We finished with fish and chips, which was the only part of our order that we truly enjoyed. However, for $26, there was only one small piece of fish served to us. The second piece on top looked like fish, but when we cut into it was just batter. We were looking forward to trying dessert, but didn't even bother as everything else was so mediocre. Oh well. read more

When you think of the Village, a restaurant like Dame comes to mind. It is cozy and radiates character. Dame can be very crowded but the bar offers some very tasty cocktails. Often they add their own twist. I ordered the lemon tagliatelle which was flavorful and filling. Overall, this is a good place for your Village experience. read more
