What a nice experience! I was quoted by Toyota service that my 2014 Prius' 90K maintenance would be around $750. When i checked with DMAC they quoted me $520. I had a noise with my serpentine belt and wasn't sure which pulley was the issue. Initially I went to Steve's auto shop but he was retiring and recommended Dana Meyer. I spoke mostly with Jen and she was super nice along with everyone else. They quickly diagnosed the issue (worn down and leaking water pump) and did the repairs in a day. Didn't feel talked down to at all nor that they were trying to upsell anything. In fact they were very transparent about pricing and it felt very honest. Genuinely nice people. I learned of Dana Meyer by word of mouth and the thing is I didn't know this person but I knew he was a prime (older) gentleman who lived in the neighborhood (Kensington) for awhile. I Stepped in for the first time was greeted by Jen, who was kind and well-tuned to my auto problem. She was not just the front desk Woman but she knew a lot about cars too...awesome:) my engine light was on and she was methodical in her approach in identifying the problem by first, utilizing the sources she had. Update: 3/2020 Another fast, friendly, honest and affordable experience at Dana Meyer! I had taken my car in to the Honda dealer for a recall, and on the way out they gave me a list of things they claimed were broken with a proposed cost of over $1000, and an offer that they could "help me out" by knocking that down to $900. I gave the folks at Dana Meyer the dealer's list of alleged problems when I took my Civic in for a 100k service. In the end they said my car was in fine shape and none of the supposed problems needed any work. Instead they simply charged me a very affordable price for a comprehensive inspection and some minor improvements, and located a very cheap salvage replacement for my broken side mirror. Our regular mechanic (a solo operator type) retired. So we needed someone new. Dana Meyer (and a few others) were recommended. After reading many reviews I somewhat reluctantly chose Dana. I understand he'll probably be more expensive than a solo operator but I also suspect he invests in his business and employees. So I gave it a shot. I had two prior mechanics work on our 2013 Toyota (one was a bigger shop that was very good at questionable upsells) so I had benchmarks on major and minor services following the Toyota service schedule. I'm familiar with the service schedule and looked at the estimate Dana provided. Seemed fair. I asked them to not rotate the tires as they are new and I got a small discount. The final bill was very close to the estimate and no unexpected service was required nor suggested. Also the rough estimate I was given over the phone was very close to the actual estimate once I made the appointment. Consistency is key. Felt good about the service and my interactions with the people at Dana. I also understand that not all cars are in the same condition so YMMV. But if there had been something unexpected I feel like I could have had a conversation with the mechanic and not be pressured into a decision. But time will tell. I'll return to Dana for the next service. I also looked at the oil and air filters to verify they had been changed. All good. And I really like their customer records system. I could review the final report from my phone thoroughly before pickup, and be prepared with questions. read more

Oh my gosh, I found my forever auto shop!! I had great anxiety, having postponed tuneups or work of any sort for a long thr(*cough*) years, due to my limited finances. I feared it would cost me an ever-increasing fortune; more so, I feared being chastised and embarrassed for having neglected my little Yaris. But a friend of mine had been waxing poetic about Dana Meyer Auto Care, noting how immensely kind they have been, to him; so, with my freelance work picking up, I finally saved enough and brought in my car. First off, Cat and the front desk team are so very warm and delightful. Cat's down-to-earth personality and good humor were encouraging, and not the slightest bit judgmental. She was mindful of my anxiety, and thoroughly explained everything they would do--a top-to-bottom assessment (which was quite informative), along with tuneup and oil change. Secondly, I found the prices perfectly reasonable--in fact, even with the additional work on my breaks, it came out to a couple of hundred less than I had anticipated. As for the negative review about their markups, nonsense: *all* shops mark up parts--so do I, when I need to make purchases on behalf of my design clients. Keep in mind, markups are, in essence, a labor expense: you are paying for another person's hours in sourcing and obtaining these items. For me, Dana Meyer's reasonable markup is welcome, in exchange for my being able spend my hours doing *my own work* of earning an income. As a freelancer, time really is money, and it's great to have a service shop I can trust to handle sourcing parts. Thirdly, that word, "care," in their company name: they took good care of my car--it feels light and smooth and solid; it purrs. They cared about me, not only as a customer, but as a human being (Cat and I totally bonded over our both being musicians!). And they care about each other--the interactions between staff were genuinely kind and familial--it felt good, being there. Earlier this week I went to Big O Tires here in Berkeley when I knew I needed tires. 3 hours later they called to tell me that their (air quotes) INSPECTION (close air quotes) uncovered $2,300.00 in urgent and necessary repairs. I told them thanks but I'd get a second opinion and promptly made an appointment at Dana Meyer. Good thing I did as Dana Meyer did a thorough analysis of my vehicle and provided photographic evidence that proved 0% of the repairs that Big O said were urgent were actually needed at this time. In my opinion, Dana Meyer Auto Care is probably one of the most respected automotive shops in the East Bay. Having been in business in a very competitive sector since 1975, it is obvious Dana is doing something right! I'd recently taken my mother in law's Hyundia Tucson in for a routine service, which as you might guess went flawlessly. With being in business for 44 years, Dana has been able to collect top notch staff, from his service writers to his technicians. They are true professionals in every sense. Although my service was minor, I did witness the staff giving some very sound advice to a longtime customer. This customer had been bringing the same car to Dana's for nearly 25 years; he LOVED the car. Unfortunately however, this car now has over 300,000 miles on it and needed extensive work. Even though the customer wanted to have the work done, the staff advised him that it was not worth it, and offered to help him find a new car, and inspect it for him prior to purchase! They turned down several thousand dollars in work to do the right thing for their longtime customer. There was a known pre-existing problem with the threads on the aluminum oil pan on my car, and it decided to totally fail when the drain plug came out. They were able to put a temporary fix on my car which lasted my 1500 mile road trip without leaking a drop. I'll be bringing my car back for a new oil pan at next oil change. I went here because three friends recommended Dana and his team. I had been going to a home garage mechanic for the last 30 plus years and was very nervous about going to a big shop. I know a fair amount about car repair. They did a great job with a difficult problem. I strongly feel they are honest and straightforward. I'd definitely go back for other problems. They really take care of you in a 'best practices' sort of way. Without asking, they did a 23 point check and found I needed new belts. Very useful. Jen and the office crew are great. Later, I went back to get a free check on the car's ECU monitors which I really appreciated. My one demur is that because I'm very budget conscious, I wish they'd talk to me about putting in a new thermostat before they did it. They put it in as 'best practices' in that current thermostat had likely blown out. They did stick to the upper limit of my budget, for which I'm grateful. read more

My regular mechanic was very backed up with work when my head gasket started to go. So I looked on RepairPal and this shop was recommended. It was convenient because it was close to my kids' schools and I'm over there all the time anyway. They got me in immediately, for which I'm grateful as head gasket is a huge job. The price tag made my head spin a bit, but I was expecting it to be really expensive anyway. I have a bit of an inkling how much work goes into a head gasket replacement. I was given a quote and left my car for the better part of a week. I got it back yesterday. I'm thrilled with the service. They didn't just replace the head gaskets but a whole bunch of peripheral stuff that was getting old and would need replacing soon anyway. And it came in under the original quote. My car's 12 years old and it runs so smoothly and quietly now it's like I have a brand new engine. The staff was wonderful and friendly, Cat made everything as painless and transparent as possible. I feel bad writing this review, because everyone who works here is very patient, kind and informative. About 6 months ago, I took a used car I was considering buying into Dana Meyer for a pre-purchase inspection. It was a 2012 Mazda with about 30k miles. They were kind, checked me in, saw I was nervous (I've had bad used car buying experiences in the past, but was trying to be responsible this time by paying top dollar at a highly related mechanic). An hour later, they gave the car a clean bill of health and said it was in great shape to buy. I'm upset because about 1000 miles later, the catalytic converter broke. No accidents, no rough riding. It was an internal failure that had been building up. The dealer I bought from worked with me on the repairs, as they were still under warranty. So I got lucky. But if I hadn't been lucky, I would be out $3k while holding Dana Meyer's "clean bill of health." I want to like this place but it's hard not to feel swindled. I paid $165 for a car inspection that couldn't find a massive, internal catalytic converter failure. read more

After spending 3weeks with a friend near the Russian River we set out for our home in New Mexico on July 4. We didn't get far before a knocking sound alerted us to a problem. I figured breaking down in familiar territory was a good idea so we made it to Berkeley near where we had once lived. After contacting a friend for a mechanic recommendation, I was told that Dana's was the best in the area! First thing the next morning we took the car in, they sent us off to a delicious breakfast spot down the street and told us to call back in 2 hours. We authorized the repair and we're told if the parts were available the car would be ready by the next morning. That same afternoon tho we received a call that it was ready to go sooner. Do yourself a favor and read all the low reviews and don't be fooled by 5 stars. Cat was nice taking care of problem, however when challenged, didn't want to talk or return my calls. Over $5000 is repairs that never fixed original problem to diagnose why my battery is dying. Owner says "it's a pain in *&^ to take out and put battery back in place under the seat". Here is a news, it's literally your job. Just want easy tasks I guess. I have never met a mechanic who doesn't take care of their customers. Run, and never look back. read more

This review falls in the "better late than never" category. I cannot remember the last time I wrote a second review for a business--in fact, I am not certain that I have. Rewind to last June; I entered the Twilight Zone when it came time to get my smog certification renewed. After the third attempt--and failure--to pass the smog test, I suddenly remembered the adage about the definition of insanity, and called my long-time mechanic Dana Meyer. Cat told me to bring in my car, and that they would get to the bottom of the problem. I instantly felt better because I knew that they would. They did, and not only that they did so with "warp speed" and $50.00 under the estimated cost. Seriously, when was the last time that happened to you? I cannot recommend this business highly enough. Kat is a professional in every sense of the word. She anticipates situations, and takes initiative to help to help the customer have a stress-free experience. Plus, she is really a nice person.
