What else can you say about a nursery born in 1947 that has the original sign up and plays 40's and 50's music? It's a lovely walk into beautiful well kept flowers and little garden trinkets. The koi swim around lazily, in a covered area that houses lovely plants for your shaded areas. The sunny side calls you with explosions of flowers and varieties not seen at Lowe's or HD. So they cost just a bit more, however the service and advice is fabulous! My garden always draws raves and I seriously owe it all to them! Come on people, it's local, it's awesome and it's a must!!! Great place. Wonderful, healthy plants. We have purchased many plants from them over the years. We came in a few Saturday's ago and while shopping, asked to use the restroom. The female clerk said they don't have a public restroom. So, i am confused. Over the years we have supported them instead of going to Lowe's and Home Depot, and when (while shopping) ask to use the restroom and the clerk says No! Is a huge slap in our face. Are tasking us to take our business elsewhere??? read more

This is one of my favorite nurseries to visit (we live about an hour away, so we always make this a stop when visiting family in Laguna). Wonderful staff, unique pottery and items (like the iron corner hose guard!! No ONE has those at their centers that I've seen). I'm particularly in love with their pottery selection (to the buyer, you have wonderful taste), because I like to buy pots that are long and tall and in small and large sizes and they are hard to find for a good price. Appreciate that there are many more decorated pots, like ones with the roses or lion heads or swaths of garland already decorating the outside of the pot (also hard to find unless you're paying $300+). The layout is also very pleasant, there's a lot but I don't feel like I'm bumping into anything, and it's like taking a walk, well, in the garden, so I see veggies and roses and all the seasonal plants in a nice succession, so I can focus haha, which is hard for me in a gardening center. Unique selections overall, from decorations, plants to garden accessories, and highly recommend. read more

Marissa, Marissa, Marissa!! My mom (Scottie) is in the process of moving into a new house in Laguna Beach, and we went to the nursery to get some new trees, outdoor and indoor plants and pots, along with soil and some other things. Marissa is incredibly knowledgeable about all the plants and how to take care of them. She listened when we told her what we were looking for, and showed us different options for both plants and pots. She is a terrific saleswoman, but she is also extremely personable; she makes you feel like a real person, and not a sale. We went in for a few things, and walked out with a lot more, but SMILING all the way. Her customer service didn't stop there- she called to let Scottie know that the delivery people were on their way this morning too! Marissa is an incredible employee, and you are lucky if you get her when you visit Dana Point Nursery. We'll be back! (We even bought a plant in her honor!) read more

Not the friendliest bunch, at least not to us. I have lived and owned a business in the area for the last 25 years and have bought hundreds of dollars worth of plants from this place. Both my wife and myself, however, have recently noticed an unpleasant trend in our interactions with the staff. On the last few occasions of our shopping there, we noticed that the staff, while quite friendly and chatty with the white customers, were dismissive and quite arrogant with us, who are not white. We thought maybe we're reading too much into isolated experiences until yesterday. After asking the person behind the desk ( who had just finished chatting merrily with another customer for a good fifteen minutes) if a particular plant was susceptible to damage by rabbits, we were rather dismissively told: "Why don't you plant it and find out, it's only a 4 dollar plant" . Not sure what to make of that but it was a complete 180 degree from her attitude with the last person. On a positive note, they have a pretty good selection of potted flowers. read more

I have been a loyal client of Dana point nursery for a long time. I would say I spend about $250 a week there. I was there last week with my husband and my dog. Brooke the owner, told me dogs are allowed in the nursery. As we were looking at the plants around the Koi pond my dog slipped and her leg fell in the pond. Within three seconds Brooke was over to us screaming about how the koi are her grandfathers and she can't lose anything else this year. Almost in hysterics. I explain to her that my dog was not hurting the fish but had slipped in by accident. She made me feel very uncomfortable to the point of where I just left and haven't been back since. I'm very disappointed how uncomfortable she made me feel for my dog slipping for a second. I don't see myself going back there anytime soon and if you bring dogs in that nursery be prepared. read more

My partner and I loved this nursery. Great selection and was an awesome opportunity to support a local, long-standing business in the community. However, we have been very disappointed in the customer service. We tried to return a plant that we recently purchased that already had root rot -- the process has not been easy or customer-focused. Employees were not pleasant and gave us excuses as to why we could not have a timely return or exchange -- boss has to inspect the plant, boss in and out...don't know when the boss will be back, boss can't look at pics of the plant, boss has to see it in person. They asked us to leave the plant with them and to wait for the owner to call us after they have inspected the plant. It's been over two weeks and still not have had a returned phone call or our money back. We are going to move forward with a charge back for this purchase. Such a shame. Owner needs to reevaluate customer service and return policies. read more

I have come to this place alot and have bought quit a bit of plants and pots from them. They have a nice selection of plants and trees and the property is well kempt. HOWEVER I don`t think i`ll be back..My gripe is somewhat minor but, put a bad taste in my mouth. We just moved here from SF. we are in escrow on a house so I planned on coming here to buy our plants for our new home. When we came in the other day (mind you i`ve been there alot in the past and bought items here.) I had to use the restroom really bad (number 1- sorry for the "tmi") I asked the guy whom i`ve seen many times before if I could please use the restroom, I was practically crossing my legs. He said "no", but I could walk over to the bakery and use theres. Now mind you i`m not just a passer by and not some random person walking down the road. I asked if that`s where they go? He then said (no) it`s because our bathroom is torn up and out of order. That`s what you should of said to begin with ! I`m a little floored that you being a public place that doesn`t have basic facilities for you customers...Only because I questioned you is why you made up the bathroom story which is what you should have said to begin with. I walked around with my partner disinterested at this point and had to leave to drive back to my house in Laguna Beach to relief myself. This is when we went to San Juan and discovered the Plant Depot.. I`m sorry but I will not be back here. As a business owner myself I only let MY clients use the facilities at my place of business not random walk by`s , You guys should too.. read more

I love Dana Point Nursery! I've been coming here for years and especially love the pots, fountains, statuary, and uncommonly seen plants. I have two bird baths from them and a charming stone planter that I converted to a ground level bird bath by using a stopper. I have a very classical looking concrete dog, life sized, that sits by my fence in the backyard appearing to gaze out at the ocean. Interestingly, our own two dogs love to lay near it when they take their sunbaths! I used to enjoy the parrots in the large aviary, but they are no longer there. However, the meandering koi are tranquil and lovely to see. Overall, this is the go to place when you are looking for something to set your garden, patio or atrium apart from all of the things that you just see "everywhere". read more

Dana Point Nursery. WHAT A SAD STORY. Opened 50 or so years ago by this most wonderful couple Harry and his lovely wife. We have been going there all that time. When they both passed away the business was taken over by their daughter Cathy and everything stayed perfect. Cathy now has passed away and the granddaughter Brooke is in charge. It has gone from our beautiful and customer oriented neighborhood nursery to a place where friendly customer service is history. Katie who only works one day a week is the only one with any real caring about the customers. MANY OF US HAVE BEEN SHOPPING THERE FOR DECADES. And Katie has real talent for all the plants and organization and presentation. I went in there (for the last time) a few weeks ago. Store is a mess. No artistic displays. Not organized for easy purchasing. I went in to take back a plant that died one day after the purchase. The new man in charge wouldn't take it back and suggested that Brooke should call me. Still waiting for that call. Nobody cares. read more

The advantage of this nursery is it's variety. The plants are not all in top condition (we did visit in August, the toughest time with heat and pests) but some are, and you could probably find most of what you're looking for here. I was particularly impressed with their succulent selection which was up there at Roger's level. They also have a nice gift area and even childrens gifts. I found a couple indoor plants that were at similar price as California Greenhouses. Overall a worthwhile stop if you're in Dana Point, and there's a cute pond with huge koi to amuse the kids, too. read more

I've never been a "plant" person, but my interior decorator friend convinced me to get rid of my artificial indoor plants and replace them with real living plants. She turned me on to Dana Point Nursery and I couldn't be happier! Mike delivered two large trees for a high-ceiling area of my home. He was great and extremely knowledgeable in instructing me on caring for the trees. Over the last couple of months one of the trees has not been thriving and has been losing leaves. We called them and spoke with Kathie, who I think is the owner, and she was extremely helpful and gave us some different things to try. A couple of weeks later, Kathie called us to ask how the tree was doing. Wow! Great customer service! But it gets better! I went into the nursery today and Kathie offered to make a house call! She and Mike came over and inspected the tree and offered more helpful information. They said to give it one more month to determine whether tree can thrive in its less than ideal (not enough sunlight) location. They said to contact them in a month and then we can make decisions then. I hope the tree adjusts to its location and thrives because its beautiful and the height is perfect. None the less, I know I'm in good hands with Dana Point Nursery and will be using them exclusively for my plant needs. I love supporting a small local business. And, I LOVE their small business "above and beyond" customer service! read more
