Had breakfast here. We both got the eggs with meat and grits. Only complaint was the grits were too salty. I am clueless how places can over salt food. Salt shakers are on every table. Eggs were cooked perfect. Bacon and sausage just right. Really like this. Has a very retro feel and taste. And the prices are very fair. Service was fast and friendly. If you're on US-49 near the US-98 junction on the outskirts of Hattiesburg Mississippi, you're likely to see a truck stop called Dan's Truck Stop and Cafe. Now, for the record, I love non-corporate truck stops, and there are still many out there, but they are a dying breed, especially when they feature a mom and pop diner. I've now been here on two separate occasions, and it hasn't disappointed me either time. The place has a kind of late 70s/early 80s charm to it. Tables on tile floor, art painted on wood trimmed walls. Feels comfy and familiar to me. My first go around, was late in the evening, and I was feeling breakfast, so I strolled up to the counter and looked at the menu. I'm a sucker for a good omelette, so I went with the Western omelette, and smothered it and the hash browns both in country gravy, so that's what I ordered. One of the things I love about truck stops is the large portions for a good price, and in today's economy, there's nothing wrong with that. I paid for the omelette, and found a table, and a few minutes later the girl who took my order brought it to me, with an exceptionally large glass of water. I dug into it, and while the egg was a little thin and not quite fluffy enough, it was stuffed with enough peppers, onions, sausage, bacon and cheese to make it filling enough on its own. The toast and hash browns were just a little something extra. But I ate every bite on that plate. That gravy was worth the extra cost and tied the whole thing together nicely. I was sated, and perhaps a little food drunk when I left. Today, I tried the Chili Cheese fries. Again, I paid at the counter and again they brought it to me, with that large glass of water accompanying it. The chili was obviously homemade and was of the beef variety without a bean to be found, there was plenty of cheese on it, and onions too! (Which I added to it.) it also was delicious and well portioned. Both times here, the service was friendly and great, and I left feeling full. Absolutely no complaints about this place. And since it's on my work route, I'm sure I'll be there again to try other things. read more

I usually stop here upon occasion. The food here is more like home cooked food. There are absolutely no complaints from me. The customer service is never hit and miss, they are always very nice. They offer blue plate specials as well as items that stay on the menu. Today we tried deep fried artichokes. They were good. I would write more, but I have to get going. I would definitely recommend! read more

Down home southern food, not a very big Selection but you can always have breakfast Anytime at Dans. Like others have said the food could definitely come out hotter. Spent a night here...First day I got a burger and it was pretty gross...It wasn't even 100% beef...It had fillers in it and you could definitely tell, yuck....the next day I got the breakfast and it was definitely below average...The toast didn't have any butter on it and tasted plain/old...The eggs were below average as well...I get breakfast all the time all around the country and this was one of the worst ones I've had....The server the first night was friendly but never came back to check on me. read more

On Highway 49 south of Hattiesburg, Dan's is a little "truck stop restaurant" with surprisingly good food and service. I ate there two days while at a class near there and whereas the artery clogging food is about as "healthy" as one would expect (being a roadside trucker diner in the Deep South) it was quite good. I had the country-fried steak and it was really well prepared. The first day it was ridiculously busy but I was seated and served quickly. The second day it wasn't nearly as busy but our food came late and we were rushed to get out of there. That's the main reason for the loss of the star. read more

OH-MY-GOODNESS I think I just had THE BEST burger in my entire life! I'm am not kidding you and in a truck stop!!! My beautiful Aunt told me the burgers were amazing and holy crap she wasn't kidding! I had the mushroom, Swiss, grilled onion burger. They are 1/2 lb of some dang delicious beef. The toppings were so so good omg! Giant cups for endless Diet Coke. (Bonus) This is really far from my Aunt in Lucedale and me down on the coast but I will be more then ready to take a drive up here anytime! You go Dan's Diner! The waitresses were loud, rude, and lazy. The food was not at all good. It took them 30 minutes to bring me room temperature chicken. My husband, and I sat down and ordered our food, grilled chicken and a burger, twenty minutes later they bring my husband's food. Mine was not ready yet. 10 minutes later they brought me mine and the chicken was room temperature. Pissed off I ate maybe 4 bites and was done because on top of it taking 30 minutes it was gross. how do you mess up a salad? Upon entering diner, we thought it was going to be good, friendly environment, waitress was nice. After ordering dinner, we received our salads, and a large group of about 15 came in. We waited over 45 min for our dinner, the group that came in atleast 15 min after us all received their dinners (some had the same exact order as us) we waited another 15 minutes before deciding to just pay for our salads and leave. The restaurant is very inconsistent with their food. I ordered catfish "fillets" and it was extremely skimpy! Then the next catfish plate had actual good sized fillets. Our waitress was Misty and her customer service was unpleasant. I will no longer come to this restaurant. read more
