My coworker loved her meal so much she saved half of it for dinner -- that tells you everything you need to know about both the quality and the quantity! The entire wait staff is friendly and helpful, but a special shoutout to our server Katelynn -- she is amazing! She even checked on us personally because she knew the kitchen had taken a while. We tried Midtowner for breakfast and one word to describe the experience is YUM! Their menu has a good variety, basic breakfast items but cooked at best. My favorite dish out of all we tried was their pancake! Cooked perfectly, fluffy, and it warmed my heart (I love a good pancake!) The chicken fried steak was also a good dish to order if you're wanting a hearty breakfast. Service was friendly and quick, ambiance is clean. Stopped for breakfast. They have a diverse menu, including a section for those who want something that is low fat, high and protein. My waitress was amazing. Friendly and professional. I opted for an egg white turkey omelette with fruit cup. It was delicious Very nice not to simply get a bowl of cantaloupe or melon; but rather, assorted berries and pineapple. Coffee cup never got below 1/2 a cup. Very welcoming vibe. Another Yelper said it felt like a community diner. I can see that but it's more. Airy and bright, with a small town feel. So many pictures on the walls - I love that. As a single diner, I was given the opportunity to sit anywhere rather than being relegated to the counter. That is always nice. We came here on a Sunday morning around 10am. There is plenty of parking so you don't have to worry about that. The restaurant was packed but a few tables had just left so we were seated immediately in the front corner. I ordered the hardy breakfast, which consisted of eggs, hash browns, 2 sausage patties, and 2 pancakes. The pancakes were the star of the meal. They must add sugar to the pancake batter because you don't need syrup on those pancakes. They were delicious. The eggs were stone cold. Like ice. I'm not sure how long that plate was sitting in the window before it was brought to the table, but I probably should've asked for fresh eggs but instead I just didn't eat them. The sausage patties retained heat better and were pretty good. The hash browns were fine as well. This meal did the job. My partner had the Midtowner which consisted of country fried steak, over easy eggs, and a hash brown. I tried the country fried steak and it was good so I would recommend that. read more

This was our first time here. The atmosphere was lively and full of nostalgic pictures. Someone was even there giving an interview with the local news channel. Nick was our server and he took great care of us. We ordered the number one (classic breakfast) and it was delicious! The bacon was so good we ordered more on the side. Absolutely overpriced pig slop. Seriously though, don't eat here. Stopped in because we had food vouchers from the hotel since the hotel was remodeling their restaurant. If I'd had paid full price for anything here, I would have been furious. To start off, they charge a mandatory 10% gratuity. Placed my order to go and still could not get it removed. This was followed by getting back to the hotel only to realize I was missing pancakes, grits and fruit. (We ordered the waffles, hardy breakfast, real deal breakfast meal, and scrambled egg sandwich) One of the meals we ordered fruit with ($1 up charge to swap for fruit) and received about 2 Tablespoons worth of fruit. WTH! Grits were put in the corner of the to-go box instead of a separate bowl. They tipped the box and of course the grits went all over the sandwich and turned it soft/to slop. Ended up trashing that whole meal. Ordered the cheesy grits with 1 meal thinking they would just throw a sprinkle of cheese on the regular grits. Nope, they were store bought cheese flavored grits. Hash browns were greesy. Pancakes and waffles were so sweet that even my 7 year old who loves pancakes (and sugar) refused to eat them. And that's without the syrup. Eggs were supposed to be runny but were over cooked. I don't think we got a single thing from here that was worth coming back for or even going for in the first place. First of all- Our server was exceptional. Great service- very attentive but not overbearing. Very sweet and very happy even though she was getting her butt kicked (it was extremely busy). Now- let's talk about the food. I got the Dirty Byrd (with scrambled eggs) and my wife got the chicken and waffles and we, of course, split them and shared (everyone does this, right? If not- you should!). We started our brunch with a spicy Bloody Mary for me and the Mimosa for my bride. We enjoyed our adult beverages moderately as we waited for our food that came out pretty quickly. The Dirty Byrd was silly- it was so good and the chicken and waffle was perfect. It was a Thursday morning about 730am so it was pretty empty - no wait to be seated and the food came out very quickly. Coffee is very good here, it's a local and they brew it well here. We stopped on the way out of town for breakfast. We ordered the "Hardy Breakfast", which was delicious. We also ordered the "Skinny Elvis" and "Avocado Toast". The Skinny Elvis was delicious, the avocado toast unfortunately was not. The avocados were not ripe, and the flavor was bland and underwhelming. All the other food was good. Service was prompt and our waiter was friendly. We waited 5 minutes on a Sunday morning to be seated, but a large crowd walked in immediately after we were seated and many were still waiting by the time we were walking out the door. As a visitor to the town, I am not sure I would return again next visit, as I would want to try something new, but it served its purpose and was worth trying once. read more

I am a visitor to Hattiesburg and this was my first time at this establishment. I was brought here by my friend. The host was great. Greeted us immediately and got us sat. Our server was overall good, it just took some time between the steps of service. The place did get busier after we were sat, so I assume that was a large part of the delay at times. I loved the ambiance of the place, you could see the history on the walls and the vibe was right. Clean and well lit, but not terribly noisy even with it being busy. Now, to the food. The catfish with grits was sublime. Great crispy texture to the fish, creamy grits, well seasoned dish with a hint of heat. I give it a 9.5/10. I'm still thinking about this dish and we went there for breakfast yesterday. The sweet potato pancake was also excellent. Texture was a smidgen too soft for me and I wish I got a bit more sweet potato flavor but this pancake is still an 8.5/10 for me. I had to force myself to stop eating it because I was full, but it tasted so good I wanted to keep going! The cinnamon glaze is the perfect complement to this dish. Definitely try this restaurant - great story about the owner. I hesitate to return because it just seems a little discombobulated: Friends who went last week loved the omelet - we showed up yesterday & the menu was very very limited (no omelet option). The menus you see here or in their website may not be what they're offering that day & time. We had to wait to be seated because a DoorDash driver sat at our table while waiting for the order. ? He should have been directed to the very empty bar counter. There was obviously some huge confusion between the grill & the waitstaff - I counted 12 plates of food at the window & saw several tickets hanging, while five staff members kept talking and pointing at tickets and plates, but no one was actually doing anything. Finally two waitstaff left empty handed, the other picked up two plates & delivered. Rest of the plates stood a while untouched. I ordered chicken strips & waffles. The butter wouldn't melt - that says a lot. IF there was hot honey drizzled, I never found it. Fresh fruit was perfect. My husband ordered the two egg plate - he liked it (said biscuit was quite dry). Lots of people waiting to be seated - lots of tables waiting to be bussed. We've been here so many times now. We eat here every morning that we're in Hattiesburg. Youngest goes to school at USM and when we visit we always stay at Hotel Indigo and walk over to The Midtowner for breakfast. It's always amazing. Fast, friendly service. Excellent coffee. (They get their coffee from Grin and you can buy your own bag at Grin.) I always get the same thing. Two eggs, spicy hash browns, sweet potato pancake. Never been disappointed. Waitress takes order comes back and says I'm not kidding we are sold out of baked chicken how about fried. Out of baked chicken at 1230 must of had a run on it . The Midtowner is a really cool looking place in Mid Town Hattiesburg. The place looks like a retro diner. The service was great. But the food is not the greatest. I got the French toast breakfast. The toast was good but I think they could add more powder sugar and maybe some fruit? I've had French toast at other restaurants and they usually have at least fruit to go with it. I'm not a fan of the cheese grits, just bland. The corn tasted out of a can. The biscuit was pretty good and the fried okra. Chicken tenders were ok, nothing special about the fries. I was very disappointed as I have been here before and everything used to be stellar. It was a 20 minute wait for us to get a table. They were very crowded. As may be normal on a Saturday. The waitress was very sweet. She brought us back coffee a couple of times. My husband got his breakfast and the biscuits and gravy were cold. He got the sampler. I had ordered the chicken and waffle with the hot honey, and my husband was completely done with his and I still hadn't gotten my order. I canceled my order and paid $26, 20 for his food and coffee and a tip. I wasn't going to stiff the waitress because it wasn't her fault. And it was our first wedding anniversary.
