My parents were big fans of the Gold Post so I ate here quite a few times growing up. It had been quite a few decades since my last visit when I decided to stop in and try it out again. My first return visit was quite pleasant and I was very surprisingly pleased as their shrimp gumbo actually tasted like gumbo which often isn't the case once you get outside of Louisiana. I also sampled their burger with a side of onion rings which was decent but the burger was more of a thin patty fast food style burger while I prefer the NOLA style thick beef patty. I made another visit to try out their poboy so I again got the shrimp gumbo along with a shrimp poboy. This visit was not as pleasant as the first as the shrimp gumbo just seemed off while the poboy was alright but the bread seemed a bit less than fresh. In NOLA poboy bread is good for one day and goes stale so then it is used to make bread pudding. The big poboy bread bakeries in NOLA have started to ship out their bread to other places and somehow have found a way to keep it fresh longer but it still just seems you can't get that same fresh poboy bread experience anywhere outside of NOLA. The ambiance of Gold Post is till 1970's fantastic with nothing being changed from the way I remember it as a kid so that is always nostalgic. The service at Gold Post is fast food style where you order at the counter but they do clean your table. Overall this is a decent joint and one of the few poboy spots in Hattiesburg, MS. read more

Fabulous little NOLA style sandwich shop. My brother used to live down the street so we been coming here forever. Here you can get roast beef po'Boys with brown or red gravy! Yay!!! You can even get them "dressed" Nola style with your choice of gravy. Yum Yum Yum! The shrimp po'boy is just as delicious with beautifully executed super crunchy savory battered shrimp, seasoned to perfection. The tiny bistro French fries here are Amazeballs, perfect marriage with NOLA po'Boys :)... AND, the red beans & rice are served traditional NOLA style with French bread. You can get a cup or a bowl, we got a bowl & took one home. The salads here are also worth the drive, they even have their own signature dressing. it's over 2 hours for us but when we need a NOLA fix with nostalgia, it's a Hail Mary to the "GoldPost." Let me say something about their gumbo as a resident from Louisiana. This is not gumbo.

Staff were very nice. I was greeted as I entered the door. Food came out quick. I ordered a roast beef poboy and a cup of red beans. I will say I should have read the fine print on the poboy. It was served with mayo mustard and tomato gravy on it which I found to be an odd combination. I wouldn't have ordered it if I had read the description but that's my fault. Red beans were thin and mostly rice. Roast beef was very dry. Won't order that again. read more

I have loved Gold Post since I first ate there in 1978! At one point I believe they were having some service issues but apparently that has been corrected. I ate there two days in a row while in Hattiesburg recently and the food was fabulous. read more

This is my second time visiting this restaurant and it's so nice! The inside is very clean & organized and all of the staff is really nice. The wait was about 10 minutes and everything came out super fresh and flavorful. The quality of the food lives up to the name of it being the sandwich house. I enjoy coming here and it's easily become one of my fav restaurants in Hattiesburg. read more

This is a place we frequently pass by on Hardy St. and wanted to try it. It is a nice, charming place. They have a drive thru, so that is pretty convenient if you don't have time to go in. The workers seemed nice. The food is okay. We ordered the dressed roast beef poboy with gumbo and fried chicken sandwich with fries. The gumbo was actually pretty good and flavorful. The poboy, however, had a weird aftertaste, and the meat was really soft almost like ground up meat and tasted like canned meat. The gravy didn't have much flavor either. Stopped in while passing through town, one of the only places we found that was open in the age of COVID. If you're looking for a tasty but greasy burger than this is your joint. I grew up in Hattiesburg and used to love the shrimp po boy s. They had the chewy real french bread with hugh shrimp that were cooked crunchy in a breaded batter. Well no more! Now the shrimp po boys are in a soft bread with lightly crusted small shrimp. NO WAY! What happened? Guess they got bought out and went the way of alot of places. Revamped and clean. Been a staple here since I've been alive going way back. Suggest the big Gold bacon Cheeseburger. If you like cheeseburgers. Best one for miles around. Not the biggest but the best tasting. Service is very quick even though they are busy most of the time. They use hamburger Buns instead of the buttered up Busquit type bun seems so many are fond of. read more

So I ate the Goldpost Sandwich House today for the first time, even though I've lived in the area all my life. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door by the most pleasant young lady. The experience continued to be above par and the food was absolutely amazing! Definitely check out the gumbo and their signature house dressing with a salad. I grew up in Hattiesburg and have eaten at the Gold Post literally hundreds of times. Food has been consistentaly great for decades! Love the BBQ beef, chicken as well as the time tested gumbo with a grill cheese and the red beans and rice. As for as negative comments about the staff. Insert eye roll here. These people have always been nothing but friendly and helpful. Take your time and read the reviews that the people at Yelp filtered out and chose not to apply to the Gold Post average. Have only eaten here 2 times, and the first time was about 14 years ago. My wife likes the food and it wasnt bad. Really wanted to try the gumbo but they only sell it on certain days. I got a patty melt and it was ok and my wife ordered the grilled cheese and vegetable aoup. The soup had a slightly sweet flavor which i wasnt fond of. But she enjoyed it. The place tries to give a New Orleans vibe with the pictures on the wall and the food. But what struck me most about the place was a picture of a black man with those super-big lips. Love their daily specials. Food comes out pretty quick so I grab lunch here quite often. Shrimp poboy, gumbo, and grilled cheese were all pretty good. Their website says they use the best bread out of New Orleans to make their Po Boys. That is a blatant lie. I've had a better sandwich roll from one of the grocery store mega bakeries than that soft roll. The Shrimp Gumbo was passable. I wish I could like Goldpost a little bit more. It's been around forever, and one wishes it would be a compelling alternative to the corporate Sandwich place next door. The food is pretty good, though the onion rings are usually a little undercooked, and they seem to run out of things often. The larger cheeseburger or the shrimp poboy are good. However, this place has kind of a fading, tired feeling to it. And It feels dirty. The ceiling tiles and fans are covered in greasy dust. It seems like the owners or manager lack the energy to keep the place looking clean and fresh. This place has good potential--lots of nice booths and a good location. It would be nice if you could take a number and have your food brought to you. It would be a great spot for breakfast. Or what about pizza? (there's no place to sit down and eat a pizza in the USM campus area). Maybe they could get wifi and serve coffee? There's plenty of open table space here throughout the day. All of this is easy for me to say, I know, but it just feels like there is a lot of missed potential here. The Goldpost is a local landmark, with some character and a few tasty sandwiches (and the service has always been civil, though not the fastest); however it feels like maybe the owners just don't have the time, money, or initiative to turn this place into something really outstanding. The Gold Post always has wonderful food and pleasant employees. I have never eaten anything there that wasn't wonderful. Nowadays I usually get the shrimp po-boys dressed as they regularly do with shredded lettuce, tomato, mayo. Ask for the side pickles too and you get the wonderful pickles they used to automatically provide but now do on request. There is Tabasco sauce on every table. The negative reviewer, Scott D., must have been at some other restaurant other than the Gold Post when he ate out as I have never encountered bad attitudes there and I have eaten there since the mid 1970s. Even though there has been a change of ownership in the intervening years, they STILL have the same perfect po-boys they did then. The last time I ate there was the last time I ate out -- in August 2012. The Gold Post is one reason I still live in Hattiesburg -- you can't take it with you. This is one of my favorite places. Not just because I grew up eating here. Not much ambience except to those of us who love it but comfortable and pleasant, reliably GREAT FOOD which is not always findable in hattiesburg. Love the barbecue plates and po-boys, potato salad especially. That Scott D. seems to have PMS or something guys shouldn't have. Guess he was sour at who he was meeting? Thing is the Gold Post cashiers, unlike much of the rest of Hattiesburg, have great attitudes always. Agree with Brenda W.'s review completely. (Why do we wade through filters for the sane reviews here? There used to be more good ones? Where did they go? Are other po-boy places envious of this place?) The bread is slightly different than it used to be, but my dinner partner had to tell me it had changed so it isn't as dramatic as Jeanne in Petal thinks. This was my father's favorite restaurant. Every time we came down to Hattiesburg to visit family, we always had to stop in to Gold Post. He would get an oyster Po Boy with gumbo or red beans and rice. While I would get a shrimp Po Boy. Their Po Boys are so addictive. Now that he's gone, I'll be sure to keep up the tradition by visiting this location. Fond memories, good feels, and great food. I can't wait to visit again. :) read more

Gumbo had great flavor, but it was mostly liquid. Not very hearty. In an entire pint of gumbo, in fact, there was one piece of okra. ONE! In my brought-up-Southern world, that's just wrong. Gave it a try last week with some coworkers... we were not disappointed, the seats were a little worse for wear, bit the gumbo and grilled cheese hit the spot on that cool day.
