this a wonderful little greasy spoon diner. yes it is great if you have been up all night boozing it up (of course that makes it Much harder to obey the no swearing signs) but it is also great for a weekend late 'fill your tummy with grease and whimper about it for hours later' breakfast. and the food is really very good for diner food. (i think they even have meals!) they have an artery-killing cheeseburger with a fried egg that i have heard solicit a moan or two while the grease drips down your chin. plus i have never paid more than $5. you simply can't beat that. well maybe you can. the local color that attends makes the price even more appealing. oh - and they do grilled homemade corn muffins. sigh. read more

I have to admit I haven't been to Dirty Dan's in years. That doesn't matter. The emmy bull burger is a very large burger, that if I remember correctly, comes with cheese, bacon and a fried egg on it. Back in the day I would go to this place at 4AM after a long night of boozing in the college ghetto. One night I really impressed the owner because I ate two emmy bull burgers with all the fries. Fantastic food and fantastic service! We were looking for new place for diner type food and we have found it. This place, like others have described, is the definition of a "greasy spoon". Small unassuming, but oozing with its own charm. I had a ham and cheese omelet with a side of home fries and hash. Everything was delicious and I left stuffed. Excellent joint. Great food, great value for the money. And not very much money! And my wife doesn't like when she comes out smelling like the food cooking, and she commented that her clothes do not smell. So that's good news all around! I had two eggs, bacon and some awesome crispy hash browns, my wife had the same. Perfect on all counts. Our son had a short stack of pancakes, and the chef made them like Mickey Mouse ears. i literally grew up over within the smell of dirty dan's in the air at wee hours and weekends. back when the neighborhood was not "hood" (but certainly the student ghetto) i lived with my backyard facing theirs and got to smell the tasty goodness daily (big up 125 spring st). you want breakfast?! first and foremost the potatoes there are bar none delight. tom(although a lot of people here call him dan, a misnomer, dan is a tribute to the owner of dan's place 1 and tom's mentor/boss) kills the grill and takes no written orders no matter how busy it is . i am still in awe of his skills. the omelets are sick. i was addicted to the western as a kid. now as an adult i do sausage, onion, and cheese. i have never done a burger, but i would bet my life that it slams. 25 years later i am still on omelets which should say something. the corned beef hash is excellent, and the grill gets a nice crisp on it. try any dessert on the counter (ranges from german chocolate cake, coconut cake, muffins, and white cake w vanilla frosting) and you will be happy. i am usually so full i have to take it home. plus the place has at least one member of APD in it at all times, so you know you are safe. i don't live in the neighborhood anymore but take a trip home for breakfast. GO HERE ASAP. you have no idea what you are missing. read more

This place is delightful. I first came here three years ago before I moved to Albany and had a great experience. I now live in the area and returned to find that Dan's is just how I left it --- a greasy spoon serving up solid food with friendly customer service. On my most recent visit, I stopped in around 11:30 a.m. on a Sunday. The place was moderately busy, but there is a lot of seating (40+ spots), so there wasn't a wait. I sat at the bar and was greeted by a waitress within a few minutes. We ordered coffee, two eggs with bacon and home fries and the corned beef hash. Portions are huge and the food is solid. Our bill was for $18.00 and they're cash only. I suggest sitting at the bar on your visit so you can see your food and all the other orders being made. The next time I come, I'm going to try the breakfast sandwich (comes on a huge kaiser roll) or the pancakes. read more

The management expects only the classiest mafks to engage in table-friendly down-home pinky-lifting conversation up in this piece. Leave your potty talk at the door. If you don't, you run the risk of hurting the waitresses feelings in addition to putting a fringe upon that much-coveted Times Union Review it's been waiting for. I am going to be using the words "dirt" and "grime" a bit more than i normally would in a restaurant review. DO NOT LET THAT DETRACT YOU!!!!. There are two kinds of diners that I know of. The first are the diners with silver/chrome structures with menus as long as the Gideon Bible that are open 24 hours that you can get whatever you want whenever you want. And then there is the other kind of diner. The diner with weird hours that has a small menu and is caked with dirt and grime. You can see the wear and tear, both on the inside and out. This diner is the latter. And that is ok. Because they do breakfast right here. As everyone says here, I got something with the sausage, and it is pretty cool how they do it. They take it out of the casing and cook it until it gets a nice char on the outside. But the star was the homefries. They reminded me of really underdone fries from Nathans, and I mean that in the best possible way. They were slightly crispy with a full potato flavor. They could have used a bit more salt, but they were awesome. read more
