We have been to Dan's twice (or both times we went to Luray Caverns). Dan's is a tradition in the area where you are hard pressed to find chain-restaurants. Order the steak for two. You will not leave hungry or disappointed. It's grilled to order. I, unlike my husband, like my steak not mooing. They cooked the steak to his liking, brought it to the table, I sliced off my portion and they took it back to finish cooking it. The kids steak was a generous size too as were the other kids' meals. The waitstaff takes the time to stop and chat (accustomed to tourist) and even gave us suggestions for what to do with our evening. Our glasses were kept full without asking. read more

The mixed review was worrisome before I went. I can understand that now. There were 3 of us that ordered steaks, and 1 was undercooked a bit, 1 was slightly overcooked, and 1 was perfect. I had the one that was cooked properly, and it was absolutely fantastic. But consistency is an issue. The steak itself was great. The appetizer was delicious. Decided to give this place a 2nd chance for my parents 45th anniversary. We called and had a reservation for 6:45. My parents got to the restaurant before us so the wait for the reservation was not a big deal. When we got to the restaurant, my parents were seated and had their drinks. We had to wait about 20 minutes on ours but we were forgiving because they were busy. The waitress took our order and we ended up waiting about 40 min or more for our food. But only half of our food came. My parents did not get theirs. The waitress said theirs would be coming out shortly. Okay, not that big of a deal. We politely waited to eat our food but after about 20 more minutes their food still had not come. We had no choice but to start eating before ours got cold and my parents insisted we eat. We saw our waitress and asked her to check on my parents food. She said okay and went to the back. Finally after a while later my parents food came. We had already finished our meal. I asked the waitress politely " sweetie, can you see if they can get a discount, they have been waiting a long time and we have already finished our meals" . She apologized and went to the back. This was the last time we saw her. About 10 minutes later a lady came to our table asking how our food was. She never said hi I'm ...... and I'm a manager here but we just assumed she was. We told her it was good and explained the situation to her. She then told us that one of the cooks just quit and a few other excuses and then left. My parents finished their meals and shortly after the same lady brought us our checks. To our surprise there was not even a tiny discount. I politely said "mam, we ask the waitress if my parents could get a discount for waiting so long. We finished our meals before they even got theirs." Here is her response. " Lady: Was your food hot?; Me: Yes; Lady: Was your food good?; Me: Yes; Lady: Then I see no reason for a discount. It's not the waitresses fault.; Me: I know it's not the waitresses fault but when management refuses to address the issues after a customer shares them, what are the customers to do? Lady: Well that's on the customer. We treat our waitress's good." She leaves. We decide to pay with the QR Barcode on our check because we had not seen our waitress since the food came and wasn't sure when she would be back. My husband see's the lady again and makes sure to tell her that we paid using the QR code. As we get up to leave, I ask the lady her name and if she is a manager. She said her name was Kathy and that yes she is one of the managers. I tell her okay we will be leaving a review. We leave to go out and I forget my umbrella and go back in to grab it. As I'm going back in " Kathy" is coming out the door. I think nothing of it. When I come out she is standing outside. I still think nothing of it and we told my parents goodby and we each got in our cars and left. About 10 minutes later my mom calls me and says she saw " Kathy" take pictures of our cars. My mom was upset and goes back in to ask why pictures are being taken. Kathy would not respond to my mom. Finally she see's another manager and ask him and he says it's because we didn't pay. My mom tells him that we paid using the QR code. She was very shaken up about the pictures, Kathy's rude mannerisms and being accused of not paying. She goes out to the car and this is when she calls us and tells us the bill didn't go through. Immediately we check our emails and it definitely says paid. We send the screenshot to my mom and she goes back in and shows the other manager. He tells her that Kathy said we were rude and made the waitress cry and even our little girl and that the screenshot was just on our end and it had to go through their end. 1st of all Kathy is a lier. We barely had contact with our waitress and when we did we were very polite, 2nd my little girl was never upset. She had no idea what was going on with our food, and 3rd how is it our problem that you have a QR code on the receipt but have slow or no internet service to see if the bills are paid? While my mom is inside my husband tries calling the restaurant to make sure they know it's paid. He tries twice with no answer. The third time Kathy answers and my husband explains to her again that we paid using the QR code and ask if we need to turn around and show her our confirmations. Kathy says "no we didn't need to come back" so my husband tries to explain to her that we are upset about how we were treated and didn't like being photographed without permission and accused of not paying. She says well " if you had a business with a large bill you would understand. She then says she doesn't have time to talk and hangs up. My husband tries to call back to make sure we are good with the bill and possibly speak to another person but no one answers. Mom is still in the restaurant and Kathy comes out and tells her that we are harassing her because we have called 4 times. We wont be back! read more

The crowd felt like local as many people approached other tables for conversation. The kitchen service was a little slow but the food arrived super hot and fresh. I am 55 going on 56 and this was one of the worst dining experiences of my life. Both my wife and I agree on that. Truly bad food that was extremely overpriced to boot. The only reason this dreadful place is still in business is because the location is very rural and incredibly underserved and because of unsuspecting tourists that don't know better. I have not been to Dan's in 13 or more years it's been forever it seems. When I finally decided to come back was yesterday 3/4/18 with my 12 year old daughters for lunch. The place was not packed at all. We showed up around 230 pm there were 3 other parties seated. When we sat down the waitress took 10 minutes to ask is what we wanted to drink. She seemed to rush us the whole time we were there. She was very attentitive to making sure our drinks were filled, but when it came to order taking if we weren't ready she just walked away without saying anything. We ordered bacon cheese fries which were fantastic tasting they did take a long time to come out from the kitchen. The fries were supposed to come with ranch and they did not. We could not stop the waitress to ask because she was never accessible. We were seated by the window at a table for 4 and the table was an okay size but the window was dirty and so was the windowsill. When the food finally came out we ordered the steak for 2 which was about 2 lbs of steak and 4 sides. The steak was fantastic we ordered it medium and it was a little more rare in the middle then I'd like. The steak had a LOT of fat on it and I mean a lot. I shared that steak with on of my daughters. My other daughter ordered chicken fingers and popcorn breaded shrimp. The shrimp was completely breaded with the tails inside the bread. I mean the shrimp were made in a way you could just pop in your mouth but my daughter had to pull a tail out and pull the breading off everytime she ate one. When I asked the waitress she said that's how they are made with the tail hidden in the breading. The top of the a-1 sauce was filthy from other customers grubby hands and sauce. The waitress forgot our bread and butter until THE END AS WE WERE LEAVING. The food was good besides the broccoli that was half cold and under cooked. This is a very hometown sort of place. The staff were very friendly so we did our best to look past some of the grime - dirty glasses and silverware mainly. I got the ribeye with a Caesar salad and baked potato. The ribeye was extremely gristly - with only a small portion really being edible. The baked potato was great. My husband got the special with was also great- king crab legs, steamed shrimp and a sirloin. It was served on the smallest plate ever which is crazy trying to wield those crab legs - it was a sight! This is a 2 star restaraunt in Atlanta - but we aren't in Atlanta - We are in Leray, Virginia, where there is almost no restaraunts. We had the "Sirloin for 2" and holy f'n crap would I like to meet the two individuals who can put that steak down. I have uploaded a picture for reference - It is every bit of the 2 lbs they say it is. So if you get the Sirloin for 2, be sure you have four people. Overall, the steaks were decent but just a bit overdone. The best thing I had was the sweet potato. Perfectly seasoned with cinnamon and not too much butter. The service left nothing to be desired. Everyone from the hostess to the waitress were warm, welcoming and hospitable. Very good. My girlfriend and I ended up getting the prime rib for two. The thing is huge. I have a bottomless stomach and even I was impressed. It was delicious; however, I will say one thing: A bit unevenly cooked. We asked for it to be cooked medium and there were areas that were a bit too red. You know, how it gets that semi-gelatinous look about it when it's undercooked. This was easily remedied, however. We were fairly stuffed by the time we got to that portion, so rather than sending it back, we just took it with us, reheated it later and were ready to go. I know that's rather unacceptable to a lot of people though; and usually would have been for myself, so it's something they'd certainly want to work on. In terms of sides, the spinach and artichoke dip was lovely, as were the hush puppies and french fries. The hush puppy order was rather small, however. I'd say that less than ten came in an order. It just seemed a bit minuscule. The dip wasn't that plentiful either, but it did the trick. The artichoke dip comes with tortilla chips. I would have preferred some sort of bread, but the tortilla chips were fine. I would return to this place, but I might just be a little more careful for how I order the prime rib. I have a feeling that if I ordered "medium rare"; that would bring it a little closer to "medium". I know it's a bit of a pain and one shouldn't have to make such accommodations for the people cooking the food but hey...people are allowed to make mistakes. read more

I sent the prime rib back and ordered the fried shrimp thinking it would be generic but fast. Instead they were so over-fried I could barely get a fork in! We ate here just as Covid was really ramping up, so I'm giving them the benefit of doubt. My husbands burger was burnt (literally burnt) and they sent it out. Any cook would've noticed they burnt it but still it arrived at our table. My husband picked at it, ate his fries and we left. Folks that go here are more or less the locals. We on the other hand were traveling through for Luray Caverns and stopped here because we thought a "Steakhouse" would be a bit classy. There was 3 tables full when we got there, we were table #4. The service was good, we had a good waitress and she was tentative (I guess because the place was a ghost town) and was always refilling our tea's and so on. She was also very friendly. The food was a completely different story. Was not even mediocre food. It was frozen or advertised as something it was not. It was overpriced and its was cooked horribly. The restaurant was not very clean, there were cobwebs on the ceiling and the booth seats were cracked, taped over, cracked again and that was taped over. Our table was sticky and the grime in the window was stomach turning. I found a little restaurant called Brookside a bit further down the road. If you are not starving travel another 10-15 miles (+ or -) down the road to this place. They have a complete menu AND a really good buffet (and I am NOT a buffet person at all). read more

I recently had an opportunity to dine at Dan's steak house. I live in Front Royal, Virginia, and wanted to take my wife out to dinner for St. Valentines day. I was looking for someplace other than a chain type restaurant, but better fare than is normally found local to me. Dan's Steak House met all our expectations. The restaurant is located up on the Luray side of a mountain, between Luray and New Market on Route 211. The building appears to be older, but has a homey nostalgia feel to it, due to the aged pine planking interior and wood seating. It is definitely what I would call a family friendly restaurant. I made reservations because of the holiday, and we were seated immediately upon our arrival. Throughout the meal, our waitress Shayna was excellent. She ensured we never ran out of drinks, and checked on us at a pleasant pace during the dinner service to ensure we liked our meal. The menu has a wide variety of reasonably priced selections, including seafood in addition to Steaks. We ordered potato skins, two salads, two Porterhouse steaks, sweet potato, and macaroni and cheese. All of the food items we had were very good, and the steaks were cooked exactly as we requested. Additionally, timing of when the food items were brought to our table was spot on. Unlike many restaurants, we had time to enjoy our appetizer, then our salads, before the main course was served. We did not feel rushed, in contrast to some other establishments where we have dined. Dan's Steak House, began to fill up quickly during our visit, suggesting that Dan's seems to be a local favorite. Well, 3 stars feels a bit generous... The place was cute and quaint. We had a reservation for 12 and they seated us right away. We asked the waitress if she wanted to know how we'd like the bill split before we started but she said she'd figure it out at the end. This she did with an amazing competence! We were all dumbfounded that she could split it up so easily and quickly and without any errors! The food. The salads were fine. There's not much you can do to screw up a dinner salad. My friend had a steak salad was was highly impressed. The steak on her salad was the best steak anyone at our table had. 2 couples ordered shrimp or crab leg extras with their steaks and were thrilled with the quality and quantity of the seafood. 3 couples ordered the sirloin for 2. It was enormous and varied from rare in the center to charcoal on the edges. And every inch had fat and gristle. One of my friends had a ribeye that had a solid piece of fat as big as my fist and wrist. Unbelievable! I had the prime rib, took 2 bites and sent it back. It was bad enough to put me off steaks for life! It was tough and very fatty and gristly. They took it off the bill and just charged for my potato and salad. That was fine. The staff celebrated my daughter's birthday by bringing her a massive slice of the BEST chocolate cake. Seriously, this piece was 1/6 of a 3 layer cake. The 12 of us shared it. In short, it's a nice place, the food (except the beef) was good but they'd be better off getting a better quality of meat. Waited 50 minutes for 4 barbeque sandwiches and 2 salads. The sandwiches were tasty, but 50 minutes?! At least I seem to recall the sandwiches being good. By the time I got mine, I was so hangry, I ate it in under 3 minutes. The soda was flat, so were the sodas they replaced them with. You get 2 choices there...$20+ steaks or small $8 sandwiches. Not much in between. We did get $14 salads, but they were not even as good as a salad you can get at a coney place for $7. The whole meal was aggravating. I would not recommend Dan's. Keep driving. We have gone past thIs place millions of times on our way to the in-laws. We finally decided to stop on our way home this summer and we absolutely loved it! Not only were our steaks cooked to perfection, they were the best we have ever tasted at a restaurant. The Baked Potato's were huge, and the toppings were actually placed correctly with the butter and cheese in first so it melted. Salads had fresh veggies, and the dinner rolls tasted like dessert!! Service was impeccable and the cost was very reasonable. Went back again this weekend and had the same experience!! I recommend this to anyone traveling through the Shendoah on 211!! read more

Terrible! The only good thing was a server! Bloomin Onion, crab bowl dip! Bloomin Onion was like a mini onion the dip was disgusting, the crab dip was served on top of a cold hamburger roll which we sent back! Travelled to Luray from Philly to spend a week in Shenandoah and stumbled upon Dan's Steakhouse. And boy I am glad I did. Dan's was among, if not the best, steak places I have ever eaten at. I got the Prime Rib and my wife the Filet. Both were awesome, and the Filet was particularly so. So were the baked potatoes. Wow. If you are in Luray, you simply must go to Dan's, and come hungry, the portions are huge. read more

First time visiting the Luray, VA area and found Dan's while searching for some seafood. Turned out to be pretty good! The wife and I are both foodies spending years in Manhattan tasting wares of many cultures. We had the clams on the half shell for an appetizer and then tried the seafood pasta and the seafood combination. All of the seafood was fairly fresh, and cooked properly. The seasoning was a touch sodium heavy for health conscious eaters, but we still enjoyed the food! Our server was very polite, attentive and non-intrusive creating a nice dining experience. Seems to be a popular location for locals and it filled up rather quickly around dinner time on Saturday. Didn't actually try any steak, but as for some seafood offerings for those far away from the coast, it was a good experience. 5 stars would be reserved for amazing food experience. This place was awful. The waitress seemed to be trying her best but it took us a long time to get noticed and offered drinks and the food took forever to come. I had the Louisiana Cajun Style Catfish; what this translated to was two pale, barely seasoned fried catfish fillets for 18.95. To be fair, they did come with a side of what appeared to be canned green beans and a cold baked potato, but it still seemed somewhat overpriced. One of my dining companions had the spaghetti, which was overcooked and mushy. My other companion had the steak, which was ordered medium well and came unevenly cooked, so raw it was bloody in spots and grey in the middle in others. Seriously, this food was not just not good. Touted as having "the finest steaks in the Shenandoah", well, maybe before the cook got a hold of them. Customer service experience was just OK. When we first walked in no one greeted us. There were several servers and one hostess walking around. We stood there for a good five minutes before I approached someone at the counter and she told me to hold on and get this.... she wasnt doing anything. We had m a staring contest before I approached her. The food was alright. We waited for 30min for the appetizer and one hour for our main course.
