I just asked for the pizza chef to decide what to put on it (something all pizza chefs will gladly do). I've been to this place following my Italian friend's advice. No regrets! Pizza-yummmm!!! However... Trastevere has so many restaurants with beautiful terraces and ambience. We went to Dar Poeta twice during our two weeks in Rome and were impressed both times. It did not have the touristy vibe, despite the fact that it was recommended in Rick Steves Rome 2013 guide book. Great recommendation Steve! (or whoever works for you). Our favorite pizza is in the picture that I uploaded to yelp (The Superbufalo). Fresh, buffalo mozzarella, artichokes, and olives. If you're a pizza char aficionado, you'll be happy with this place as their pizzas had a nice char to on the bottom of them. We ordered a nice salad with tuna also. It was crisp and a decent portion. What really stands out about this place is the authenticity. Located in Trastevere, it's off the beaten path yet it's located in Rome's most beautiful neighborhood (in my opinion). The wine is a great value. A 1 liter carafe of house wine is 8 euro. If you don't make reservations for dinner, be prepared to wait, but not for long. On Saturday night at 8 PM, we waited for 30 minutes for a table. Menu prices are easy to see and the check always matched up to what we ordered. The servers spoke decent English, were very competent and communicative. I hope Dar Poeta doesn't get too popular by the next time we visit! Located on a quaint street -- I would recommend sitting outside as the restaurant's interior isn't anything special. Went here while we were on holidays in Rome having read such great things on yelp! We arrived and there was a queue outside of people waiting for tables which is always a good sign! We went in and were told the wait was 20 - 30 minutes so we left our name and went off for a drink. Came back 20 minutes later and were shown straight to our table. It was busy inside and all the food looked amazing. The service was a little slow and we had to ask for menus which was a little annoying. I got a marguerita and my boyfriend got a spicy pizza. They both tasted amazing! If a little burnt in places. The base was perfect, not too thick, not too thin. Perfect! :) We got a carafe if wine as well which was very tasty. All in all we were pleased with the dinner and it was very cheap. Much cheaper than other dinners we had gotten over the course of our holiday. This is probably the one we enjoyed the most. :) I was very sad at the end when i didn't have enough space to get the nutella calzone that everyone was raving about. Had to rewrite this review for the amazing amazing pizza we had last night. Four of us went and split four different pizzas. I cannot emphasize how much of a good idea this is. Our four pizzas had salmon and arugula (decent), goat cheese and pesto (amazing! the cheese was what made it), potato and sausage (our fave), and bufala mozzarella with basil (classic and perfect). This pizza is by far the best I've had in Rome. I think it's because the crust is super amazing. Like not too soft that it's not crunchy, but not so crunchy that it's like cardboard. The pizza here is THE BEST in Rome! The place is a little unassuming, as it's modestly decorated and located on a quiet side street, but the food makes up for the lack of visible character. There was plenty of both outdoor and indoor seating, so you probably won't need to wait for a table. Little do I know how much of an impact Dar Poeta and Rome will have on me, that it will follow me back to New York, that my gold leaf sun will be cloaked by storm clouds, and the memory of Roman pizza and a carafe will keep the artist dream glowing red like lava. Like salsa pomodoro. Leine and I meet two older gentlemen in a nearby bar. Trastevere is friendly, and they mention Dar Poeta's pizza. A much more substantial pizza than Da Baffetto, for instance. A real Roman pizza, they say. No flimsy crust. When I think of pizza in Rome, I think of squared things on the street. On the streets of Rome, I say. In Rome, I repeat. They top their pizza with funny things like zucchini. In the streets of Rome, I hold Leine's hand on Trastevere's Ponte Sisto and yearn for Napoli where Bengali immigrants sell bootleg cigarettes near the fish market. I usually don't equate Rome with pizza. But these two men swear by Dar Poeta. One has a mustache. He's large and imposing. A manly figure, broad, who tells me not to disclose my religion to anyone. Just to continue speaking Italian at Dar Poeta, ethnically ambiguous, and I won't see any trouble. Just good food. We order a salad with large pieces of raw mushrooms and thick slices of parmigiano reggiano. We douse the greens in olive oil. It's not the star of the show. I tell Leine, I want to be the star of every show I'm in. I mention Noah, that flimsy armed fool that works at MoMA. I say that he's like this salad. Mediocre and lucky to be in good company. Because the pizza arrives and it's amazing. The pizza is salty and chewy. It's rich and luscious. The place is bustling with pizza lovers. Noah is the salad piggy backing the art scene's Dar Poeta pizza. Talented folk like Robert Bradley, and yours truly. Leine loves the pizza here. She says, "I've never met Robert." He's a sore subject; I don't talk about him much. "Ill introduce you," I say. "He's so talented, he scares me." Leine is sensitive to all of my insecurities. She says she understands and then makes airplane sounds with a slice of pizza, moving it to my face like I'm a big baby. We drink so much wine here we laugh and we joke about Noah, Robert, and those men we met earlier, particularly the mustachio'd one, that perhaps he's waiting outside to kidnap us or something. But he's not. He's just a mensch. A guardian angel who pointed us to a good restaurant in an exceedingly tourist laden area, my favorite in all of Rome. read more

I had high hopes for Dar Poeto after reading several countless reviews on Yelp. Even walking up to restaurant, I was excited for the pizza selection, hearing it's the best in all of Rome. There was a 15 minute wait, which wasn't bad considering the amount of people waiting and the popularity of the restaurant. I ordered the rice ball which was a nice way to start the meal. This was accompanied by a half liter of White "House" wine for €4,00 which is a great price. The pizza menu was filled with delicious looking choices, so my fiancé and I narrowed it down to our top 3 and ordered two and selected one from each other's list. This is where things started to go downhill. We ordered the Siciliana and the Sampiertino. The Siciliana was okay. It was average at best. However, the Sampiertino was one of the worst pizzas I have ever had. The mottadella left the pizza slimy, wet and overly salty. I removed the ham in hopes it would taste better, but I could barely stomach it. The waitress asked if we wanted to box our leftovers and looked perplexed when I didn't want to take more than half a pizza back with me. At no point did she ask how our pizza was during the meal. I contemplated sending my back, but service was sparse and didn't want to worry about sending my food back. Totally disappointed, I wanted to leave, but my fiancé convinced me to stay for the Nutella and Ricotta calzone. This was a great dessert; a very unique pairing. It is served warm with pure cocoa on top, which was a nice touch. Just when we thought the restaurant redeemed themselves, we pay our pill and receive over €8,00 in change; all small coins. The cashier said they had no cash, which I struggle to grasp that being the reality. At this point, there is a bad taste in my mouth; not only from the food but the service as well. There was also a service charge of €2,00 that was not indicated at the beginning of our meal. It clearly states there is no cover charge, but then included a "service charge". I was under the impression that service charges were not permitted in Rome. Do not waste your time with this restaurant. read more

Outstanding spot. The best pizza I've ever had (lived in Italy for 20 years so that's saying something). Only better pizza in the world is probably in Naples. They also do a Calzone alla Nutella which is obscenely good. The waitresses are all really nice, the place itself is great, and the prices are more than reasonable. The house wine isn't bad. The one problem is that they don't take reservations, and the place is ALWAYS packed (because the pizza is so insanely good). So get ready to wait outside the restaurant for a good 30 - 45 minutes. My friend and I started off with two bruschettas (mashed zucchini & cheese + honey). THE PIZZA CRUST ROCKS. My favorite part of a pizza is the crust, so after ordering the "Dar Poeta" pizza, I was NOT dissatisfied. The crust was flaky and fluffy at the same time. I accidentally ordered the one without a tomato sauce base, so I asked for sauce on the side and poured or dipped my slices into it. The sauce isn't the specialty here, but the crust and light cheese was fantastic. Really fun place. The worst part of it is - too popular with Americans possibly because it is recommended by Rick Steves. (I'm American, but I'd rather hang with Italians in Rome.) It is still authentic and Trastevere is a great neighborhood - worth going in the evening and enjoying the Italians being Italian. Even in February it was "happening" and the piazza was crowded. The pizza is not as thin as some other Roman pizzerias. It is more like what Americans would except from thin crust not the crazy paper thin Roman crusts. The waitresses are all friendly and attentive. The food was great and the house wine was enjoyable. If the same food & Americans were next to a major tourist attraction like the Vatican I'd probably give it 4 stars. Dar Poeta has consistently been one of the highlights of my study abroad experience. First thing's first, the margherita pizza is amazing, some of the best I've had in Rome. I'm not much of a crust eater, but the dough is so out of this world that I end up finishing the whole thing. The atmosphere is great as well, it feels very quaint and authentic tucked into a quiet alley. When we arrived, the restaurant looked fairly busy. But luckily it is very spacious and the four of us were seated almost immediately.
