You have to stop by. The beautiful thing about our visit around 12-1 was how empty and quiet the area was. Only one couple was seated and there was so much silence, and that's something to appreciate when you're constantly around tourist groups in Rome. I won't say it's completely non-touristy, but it's the most non-touristy place you'll get for being in Rome. Also, the pricing is great compared to anywhere else you can eat. It's €8-10 for a whole pizza for yourself, and it's definitely a big size. I got the potato, pesto, and mozzarella pizza €8.50 and it was just fantastic. THIS is THE PLACE to go for pizza in Rome! Ate lunch at Dar Poeta twice during my recent trip to Rome. The restaurant is located across the river in Trastevere. I recommend showing up early especially if you are looking to eat outside. We tried both the Lingua de Foco and the Taglialegia pizzas. Both were very good but we preferred the Lingua de Foco, though it's not as spicy as described on the menu. We also enjoyed 0.5L of house wine for $4... can't beat that. Highly recommend! read more

It is tucked in the Travestere neighborhood and is around a few corners, but the place is amazing! As expected, its a little small. So expect a small wait or to be bumping elbows with your neighbor. Just get over it. Their pizza choices are overly plentiful. I dont know how one makes a decision. They are all based on italian dishes like a "cacio pepe" pizza etc. We went with the Taggliano - again it was the middle of the afternoon and I dont know that we were starving but they had AC and we couldnt not stop. Seasonal pizzas, giant calzones, $4 carafes of wine...simplicity at its best! Be warned: there can often be a long line. But come a little outside of regular dining hours (6 or 7:00) and you can skip the line. I don't think there's much else to eat aside from pizza (except some bruschetta) but why even bother when you can have incredible pizza? Mine had tomato sauce, mozzarella, fresh peppers and some sort of soft cheese that melted into the pie. My husband had a calzone with spicy sausage. This was without a doubt the best pizza we had in all of Italy! The whole area was hopping, so I was worried we'd run into a wait but I think it's just far enough off the main drag that people don't run into it. We were sat out front right away. I was fortunate to be staying in a flat just above Dar Poeta in the Trastevere district on my trip to Rome in May of 2017. They are famous for their yeast free dough. Busy spot so time your visit well. I had the advantage of ordering take away and waiting to here my named yelled out from downstairs! it was ok. like a lot of places we've eaten at, i don't understand the hype of dar poeta. i ordered the salmon pizza with a suppli and croquetta and my wife ordered a sausage pizza. my salmon pizza was good. i wanted something different than the red sauce meat pizzas we'd been eating and the salmon was very refreshing. the dough was good. they burnt the crust of my wife's pizza, which kinda sucks cause we waited for a while for the pizzas to come out. and this was the only time in our time in italy where our crust was burnt so you can't tell me that's normal. the suppli was great. we both loved it. the croquetta had great flavor, but a little too starchy for us. there wasn't a wait for us. we arrived around 5ish in august and were seated promptly. although the place was nowhere near packed, they wouldn't allow my wife and i to sit next to each other since we were squished between a wall and another table. they made us sit across from each other meaning one of us was right up against a wall and the other was right up against another person's back. i mean, c'mon. allow us some space while no one else is coming in to be seated at the same table as us. i'd say this place is worth skipping. it's not bad, but there's better places. read more

Real life started after I had my first meal at Dar Poeta. Even though I had the Sarmonetta a few years ago, I still distinctly remember it. It was a beautiful night out with my roommates from my study abroad program, and we stumbled upon this wonderful establishment filled with generous waiters and waitresses. I ordered the bruschetta, and the flavors were wild. The bread had a nice crunch to it, and the assorted dips made the night an adventure. The Sarmonetta tasted like heaven. The cheese was godly. The salmon and cheese were melded into one, and I felt unified and whole. Anyhow, this is the best pizza I've ever had in my life and I hope I can come back to Italy just so I can come here again a third time. Pizza here is incredible. The space fills up so quickly so come during American meal hours. Italian meal hours tend to be later (9/10 pm on a weekday) so coming before then will ensure you don't have to wait super long. The whole area is quaint. The pizza is thin crust and the crust is chewy and crunchy at the same time. I highly recommend the pizza with all the toppings! 1 pizza is enough to fill up 1 hungry person. Came here after my friend highly suggested it. It's a little far off from the main hustle and bustle of Rome. It's located across the river in a little alley that didn't look as if any other businesses were on that street. Came in and enjoyed bruchetta, a pesto pizza pie (pesto, potato, mushroom and cheese), and the heavenly nutella/ricotta calzone. I know it's frowned upon to share the pizza but my friend I did so anyway. It was one of the best pizza's I ever had. Very delicious. The bruchetta was just okay, wasn't bad but wasn't mind blowing either. We then shared the nutella/ricotta calzone (small). The small portion can be easily shared among 4 people. It was so big but so good! The filling was very generous. I thought it was really good but maybe because my friend hyped it up for but the pizza was definitely the highlight of the meal. Don't get me wrong the dessert is good and definitely worth trying. The servers were nice and the restaurant felt more like a place locals frequented. Critically acclaimed as the number two example of Roman pizza. Screw the reviews, it's good eats. Sure it is not Da Remo but it's great in its own right. The blistered and burnt crust is thicker, the toppings the same quality. The environment the same but ultimately what makes it great is a matter of personal preference. Friendlier to tourist but still locally Roman. You still need to try and fit in. Start with the assortment of bruchetta. The bread alone with it's chewy interior and uber crisp crust will have you yearning for more. Go for the chef's selection that varies by the day. It is made so each person gets to enjoy one of each of the six selections. The pizza; much thicker than Da Remo. The crust is equally well blistered. The hardwood smoky bitterness equally strong but the toppings are more plentiful and boy are they good! The freshest of milky mozzarella, the earthy, well aged prosciutto; yum. Just keep in mind the fresh mozzarella makes for a wet interior. Bottom line, more substance than Da Remo but not the same level of perfection. Do try the name sake Dar Poeta with mozzarella, zucchini, ciauscolo, garlic and spicy chili peppers. Delish with the perfect balance of heat and umami goodness. Tourist OK but still, mostly Roman. Do not disrespect their culture. Pizza eaten with a fork and knife. Speak Italian where possible. Never ask for a custom pizza. Keep it friendly with your neighbor. OK rosso vino della casa. Do not opt for the bottled alternative. You will instantly be labeled as a snob. Very reasonable. €15 per person. English spoken if you lead with Italian. Open for lunch and dinner. Advance booking recommended. Side note: Never before have I been so embarrassed to be an American. "Ugly American" doesn't even begin to describe the inexcusable behavior of a couple seated next to us. Getting upset that the waiter did not speak English, or no English menus. Voicing loudly how she had to wait 30 minutes for a table. Flagging down any person they saw asking for more water and wine that was right in front of them. Getting upset that no one brought their check. Bravo to the inebriated waiter who gave them the finger as they left. read more

Dar Poeta I'd seen rated as one of the top pizzerias in Rome prior to visiting; thus, when I finally made it over to Italy, this was a must visit for me. The past is located in the Trastevere and it took me a few minutes to find it, but not long. They have some outdoor seating as well as 2 floors. The place is all brick inside, with the wood burning oven out of view. Service was friendly and efficient. This is all great, but the pizza ended up being just good. The pizza I got came with aged mozzarella, anchovies, and zucchini flowers. THe combo of the anchovies and mozzarella went together beautifully, with the zucchini flowers adding in another layer of depth. My only issue with the toppings was that the mozzarella and achovies were really balanced, but the zucchini flowers were not; if they have broken them up a bit, this could've been avoided. The main thing that bothered me was the crust. They explicitly state on their menu that is defies normal style characteristics, but I just didn't get it. It didn't have much crispness to it, nor wetness or rustic flavor; it was kind of just blah. Not bad mind you, just unremarkable. The whole thing wasn't a world beating pie like everyone promised me I'd have in Italy, but it was still unique, good pizza. Would I go here again? Yes, but I would try something different. The larger problem is one of competition. With the Campo D'Fiori, Da Baffeto, and several other contenders in walking distance, I can't say I'm going to seek this place out like I did last time I was in Rome. If I lived nearby I'd be singing another tune, but with only a few days in the city I will probably try somewhere else next time. One day I may return, though. read more

I've been to this place following my Italian friend's advice. No regrets! Pizza-yummmm!!! However... Trastevere has so many restaurants with beautiful terraces and ambience. Best pizza I had...in Rome and anywhere in the world! In our short 5-day trip, Dar Poeta was the only restaurant we returned for round 2 because it was so good. You have to try this place at least once! Even though it's tucked in the alleyway of Trastevere, Dar Poeta is not a secret to locals and seasoned travelers thanks to travel guides, and it has been a popular choice for a good reason. Forget the antipasto and the insalata and go straight for the pizza! You won't find your familiar choices on the menu because instead, the menu is full of interesting combinations of toppings. Here's my tip: As long as the topping list doesn't have anything that you are allergic to or strongly against, just go for it! I didn't even what I had in the 8 choices I made because all of them are delicious in their own ways. Okay, I lied: my favorite is the namesake Dar Poeta, which has spicy salami and something else. I didn't really care what else is on there because it's so good! Each pizza is €10 on average and can feed 1-2 people. If you want to avoid the crowd, go before the normal Italian dining time (7 PM for dinner) on the weekends. No matter what though, you have to make a point to dine here once! This was the Best Pizza experience during my latest stay in Italy. We experienced Pizza from Sorrento to Milan and Dar Poeta was the clear choice. The wood Fire Oven delivers perfect crust, the Buffalo Mozzarella creamy and delicious. Of course they are best known for the Nutella Calzone which is a must order. Do not leave here without trying that. The waitstaff are extremely nice and helpful. Prices are very reasonable. I just hate it when restaurants are stingy with the amount of ingredients on my pizza. Not here, not at Dar Poeta. Totally recommend the pizzas with meat (given you're not vegetarian), their sausages are aaaaaawesome! They also serve the 'authentic-potatoes-on-your-pizza'-varieties, but I'm not a fan of those.
