I LOVE THIS PLACE! My boyfriend and I eat here CONSTANTLY! I get scared trying anywhere else because I don't think it'll be as good lol. Their naan is fantastic. I've only had the garlic one but it is so good. We usually only get one order for 2 people and it's enough! Their mango lassi is great for cooling down your mouth if you get your curry hot I got shrimp in my curry for the first time from here and they shrimp tasted fresh and clean. I do also love the chicken in it. Eating in the restaurant is a tiny bit awkward just because I think most people order food for to-go here instead of eating in. The space is pretty and very cleanly! One benefit of eating in is their fun little cocktail menu. I was quite surprised by how many different martinis they had! I feel like the price is fair as well. We hunted around for a decent restaurant who could help us out. The manager agreed to take our order and start prepping the dishes at 10:15 as we headed over from St Paul. The food was pretty good. The samosas are served with a jalapeño mint chutney and tamarind sauce. The tamarind was a little on the runny side from what I'm used to, but it was tangy and tasted good. I also got the spinach and cheese dish and it came with basmati rice. I opted for papadom versus naan-bread. I looked at several places before picking this one as I am not local. According to a fellow Yelper, this spot has been getting negative reviews for taking longer than expected on their food orders. Given my own experience, I find that surprising. As I wrapped up a day of coordinating the order and pickup of over a dozen massive painting canvases from several locations, Uber Eats pinged me to remind me of a nice current promotion - $15 off any order over $29.99. I have lots of fresh produce and a nice slab of salmon waiting for me, but it's also been a long week and I was exhausted enough to consider crashing without having not eaten all day, so why not? I chuckled that it took being reminded of a lovely promotional offer to treat myself to dining out once in a while. Well, take out - close enough. I was near the Quarry shopping center, so Darbar populated on the list of nearby eateries to consider. So close, in fact, that my order of chicken kashmiri, beef coconut curry, and garlin naan was minutes from being ready by the time I pulled up and managed to parallel a massive transport van directly in front of the place - I maybe hadn't thought this whole parking thing through when I chose to order from this location. Still, there were only two minutes left to process my order on time - there's no way *hops down from van* that the order would be *locks doors* done in time. *turns towards the restaurant entrance with phone in hand for order verification - *ping!* "It's ready! Time to pick up your order!" My phone read 19:39 - the exact deadline given for the order. Impressive. In hopping onto Yelp to write this and find the comment about long prep time leading to negative reviews, I wonder if the restaurant took note of said reviews, and if so, what changes were made to make prep time so efficient now that they met the expected time down to the exact minute estimated on my order. I'm game to reorder to test the timing. My interaction with the servers was all of one minute to verify who I was, but they were friendly and engaging. The brown bag was nicely packed and made the van smell like curry all the way back. Everything was lovely. The portions were as expected. Nothing stood out, but everything was decently good. I've always wondered why my curries from Indian restaurants never have vegetables in them, but I chalk it up to cultural differences. I'm used to Thai, Japanese, and Viet curries all being heavy on veggies, whereas my Indian coconut curry came with none, as is typical with my Indian curry orders - again, simply curious cultural differences, not a negative. If there was one thing I was (pleasantly) surprised at, it was the fact that "mild" meant, well, mild. I like a hefty dose of spice when I want spice, but when I specifically ask not to have it, I prefer not to get surprised by a hit of it. I get amused at how often I've dined out with non-spicy friends who don't even bother with the gray area of specifying "mild" and instead directly say "zero spicy," yet still get a fairly nice kick in their dishes anyway. We've even gone as far as to replace orders at local Indian restaurants only to still have my guests gulping down every glass of water at the table, fast. So yes, kudos to Darbar India for respecting requests for "mild, please." I love cooking at home and dining out with friends. It's rare that I order in for just myself aside from poke bowls, and I forgot that I typically eat smaller meals throughout the day alongside lots of fruits in between. I'm four meals in now, and there's one serving left - at basically $4.20 per meal, that's $21 very well spent: Thanks, Uber Eats + Darbar India! If you're going to come here, you should know what they do not tell you--that they'll charge you whatever gratuity they feel like, without your consent, regardless of how the food or service are. I'd always wanted to come here because it smells so good whenever I walk by. Something else to be aware of--the smell will sink into the fabrics of your clothing and also your hair. Went here for dinner, changed into my pajamas, and the next day my clothes still smelled very strongly as I was gathering laundry. I will say the food was good. Not great, but good. I got a beef biryani ($14.99) and salty lassi ($3.99). When the waiter asked if I was ready for the bill, he whipped out a card reader and said, "That'll be $24." The math is not mathing! I will never be back for that reason alone. They don't even warn you on the menu like other restaurants that there will be a gratuity, nor do they say how much it is, or allow you to see the receipt and charges before agreeing to pay. read more

It's soooo yummy. I usually go with tikka masala and it is very similar! I chose medium spice and it's got a hint of heat but goes away quickly. Next time I'll go up a notch but it's very flavorful! I live in the North Texas area where there are a lot of South Asian restaurants so I am spoiled. I was in town for a film festival and ate at Darbar twice. The staff was very welcoming and treated everyone at my table like family. The food is very tasty, hot and fresh. The menu is food from all over India and has many many options. There are a lot of Veg options as well. I would also like to add that the pricing is very reasonable. They do add auto-gratuity to your bill. I really didn't want to leave a review for this place because I don't want this gem to have a line out the door but I also truly believe this is one of the best Indian restuarants I have been to in a while. I have lived on Devon in Chicago and have spent quite some time in LA, NYC, and even India and I have to say that this place is a solid Indian restaurant worth visiting. And here is why... First, three stars is not a bad review in my book (most of my reviews are 3 stars). It means a restaurant is perfectly fine, but not doing anything terribly special or amazing. Darbar has friendly service and decent prices. I got the vegetable samosa ($5) but found them slightly charred with an excessively minty filling. The channa masala ($12) was good and vegan by default. But the dal ($12) was slightly too watery and not that flavorful. It wasn't offensive, though. The mushroom palak ($12) I don't think was vegan (Darbar doesn't label its vegan items, but I usually know my way around North Indian food and what's almost always vegan by default), as it tasted buttery and had a weird smell. It didn't taste good, though and I wouldn't order this again. The bhindi masala ($12) was fine, but nothing special. I did appreciate that it's not oily. The roti ($2) is vegan if you request it without butter and it was fine, too. On a whole I'm glad Darbar is around, but I think India Palace on Hennepin is slightly better (though India Palace annoyingly charges a $1.50 fee to order online, even for pickup, which is annoying). Dancing Ganesha downtown isn't bad either. If you're looking for lighter and slightly more interesting South Asian food, I would recommend Himalayan on Lake Street or Gorkha Palace in Northeast, both of which are Nepalese. Namaste Cafe on Hennepin is also good, but expensive. read more

Truly scrumptious! Every dish was a home run. I loved the Chicken Makhani (how can you not?), the Chana Masala was divine, and the Chicken Biryani (hot) was perfection. The experience of having eaten at this place was like watching an Indian movie. If you are reading this review and wouldn't know know how a typical Indian movie's storyline would look like, it has its highs, lows, happy moments and sad moments. Went with my wife yesterday and we were seated promptly. The server got our orders right away starting with the starters. We ordered a tomato soup and aloo tikki and we requested for a spice level of maximum. The problem with a lot of Indian restaurants here in the USA is that they add crushed peppers to spice up and the taste becomes raw on the mouth. It was the same case yesterday. Next came the onion naan and pakora curry. The pakora curry tasted too good and so did the onion naan. Just when we were about to finish up the naan, turned up the last piece and it turned out to be over cooked. We requested if that one piece could be replaced but the host was kind enough to get us a whole set of 4 naans. We were astonished by their level of customer service. We were done with the dinner and then requested for check. This restaurant has a paid parking place at the back and this restaurant validates the card so that you don't have to pay for it at the exit. The server gave back the card and to the grand exit we could have asked, we were still made to pay for the parking. I ate at Darbar yesterday evening and thought the food was okay. I was excited to try this restaurant because they had a ton of gluten free options and they were marked clearly on the menu. When we arrived, we were seated right away and didn't have to wait. For an appetizer we ordered Alu Tikki and for entrees got Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Biryani and a Mango Lassi for a drink. The drink was good but all the other items I thought were okay. The chicken wasn't as tender as other Indian restaurants I've been to but I didn't get sick from anything due to cross contamination. Really enjoyed dining at Darbar! I can't believe it's taken me so long to try it. The atmosphere is really charming and the decor is "fancier" but not over the top. It's a great spot for a date night or with friends and family. They had reasonable prices overall compared to other Indian restaurants around the area (I was expecting to pay more actually since it's right in Uptown). Their garlic naan is delicious and just as expected. The mango lassi could've been a little chillier but it was good. I got the shrimp masala which was amazing. Shrimps were a good size and you get a generous portion. The sauce is so tasty and the veggies inside worked well with the dish. I enjoyed it a lot and would reorder for sure. I had an amazing experience here for an early dinner. The food and service was out outstanding. The ambience of the restaurant is so relaxing. Everything was very clean. We ordered one Patron margarita and two glasses of wine. For food we ordered three appetizers including: LAMB SAMOSA, SEEKH KEBABS, and CHICKEN NAAN. All were very tasteful and satisfying. My goodness, I didn't expect good Indian food in MN but this has been a new low, the biryani is an absolute joke, so bad you can't even tell it's biryani, looks like Asian fried rice , they used the wrong rice type and no spices at all that were good , so regretful and won't be coming back. Food is ok, not great. Auto-gratuity was not mentioned and I was prompted with 18/20/25% tip options. So of course I hit 20% like I usually do, wondering to myself why the cost was so high (two entrees and two sodas came out to $90+) and I was rushed out of the door before I could even talk to the manager. Of course this % is the percent *including* the auto gratuity, so we're talking this place charges you 50-60% in tips. It is also very loud and waiters and waitresses are coming to your table every 45 seconds or so to ask how things are, but also asking if we want to order anything else. It really irked me as I had to say "I'd just like to enjoy my food, thanks" and they were coming by every minute still to "check on us." There's just way better food in the area. This place is an open design and is incredibly loud, so if you're at one of the tables in the center you have to yell to the person sitting across from you just to be heard. I've ordered or eaten at Darbar 25+ times and it is never not fantastic. Some of the best Indian food I've ever had and I've been to India! I typically get the chicken tikka masala, garlic naan and veggie samosa and it's spiced exactly as I order it and everything is consistently delicious. This is really close to where I live and I've been meaning to stop by here to try it out. We went here on a Wednesday night. The ambiance was AMAZING! It wasn't crazy busy in there. There wasn't any crazy loud music playing the background. The lighting as dim but not so dark that you had to squint at the menu. The way everything was set up and the colored lighting made everything glow. Just sitting at our booth felt nice. I need to mention, as silly as it was, even so it was a booth it was very comfy. I have mixed feelings about booths because the seats can be cracked and the cushioning sometimes be uncomfortable. Food wise I was very impressed. We had vegetarian Samosas, they were huge! For our entrees we got two different dishes. My boyfriend got shrimp curry and asked for "as spicy as they could get it", and they delivered. I got a Mushroom Masala and I really really enjoyed it. I have to admit I am not very familiar with Indian food so I had to google the food up first before I made my decision what to order. Service wise was slowish. Everyone was super nice and we liked our interactions but it took forever after we got our food to get anyone to get us our bill. Highly recommend going to this restaurant. I ordered paneer tikka masala and garlic naan last night and oh my goddddd. It was phenomenal. I've ordered some pretty underwhelming Indian food in Minneapolis (lacking seasoning and crying out for salt) and this was such a pleasant surprise. The seasoning was perfect, it didn't need any additional salt, and the sauce was rich and flavorful, also the ratio of sauce/veg to paneer was ideal. I only wish the dish had been a bit hotter, but I ordered it "hot" and probably should have ordered "very hot" so that's on me - I couldn't detect any heat though. That being said, I eat my food unreasonably hot. The garlic naan was also delicious. It was light and fluffy with just enough charred bubbles and delicious seasoning. It was covered in garlic and herbs very tasty. The only disappointment with this food is that it's now gone! read more
