Environment was nice and calm. Food was amazing and came out quickly. Lamb biryani was definitely the highlight.

The food, stellar. The service, friendly, but weird. Once we said we were ready for the check, the waiter disappeared for over 10 minutes. We finally had to go to the counter and pay. Which was confusing because the waiter brought checks to all the other tables. One more weird thing: there are benches against the window and they are comfy, but they are too high to touch the ground and there is nothing to rest your feet on. So they just dangle. The hot sauce for the dumplings, is, I can report, very hot! So yay for those who want the SPICE! The tikka masala was tasty with plenty of chicken and great flavor. Mild plus was no hint of spicy. I've walked past Gorkha Palace hundreds of times, but had never stopped in until a couple of weeks ago and I was really missing out! The inside is on the smaller side, but they were still able to accommodate my group of 7 walk-ins on a quieter evening which was great. The inside is pretty nice with a good, elevated family restaurant feel. The menu features a combo of South Asian staples from Nepal, India, and Tibet. The best way to order this kind of cuisine, in my opinion, is to do it family style so that's what we did! We ordered the combo Momo's to start, along with Lamb Biryani, chicken coconut curry, and Paalak Paneer. We also got a side of garlic naan to share as well. My favorite of the night was probably the coconut chicken curry followed closely by the bison momo's from the combo plate. I also really liked the biryani and naan, the paalak paneer was a bit unusual for me as I am used to a much more spinach forward dish. This dish appeared to have a more tomato cream base with spinach which was mixed in. It was also good, but much different than what I was expecting. The servers were all very friendly and quick, and the food came out surprisingly fast. Overall, a great choice for South Asian food in the Twin Cities! read more

This place has piqued my curiosity for a long time and I finally made it in for the first time. I'll definitely be back. I like traditional Indian fare very much, and the selections at Gorkha Palace seem like an exotic twist on that since there are Nepali and Tibetan recipes on the menu. For my entree, I got Lamb Vindaloo, which was different from other vindaloos I've had. It was all meat, no potatoes or anything else you might find supplementing meat in a vindaloo. The server cautioned me that it might be hotter than I expect, so I asked for the lowest spice level. That was not spicy at all, not even a little bit, so I wish I hadn't been talked down from a higher spice level. It could have used more flavor. Quality lamb meat, though. I also got "mo:mo", which are steamed dumplings. I'm a big fan of steamed dumplings and these were GREAT. They had a unique, tangy flavor that was awesome with or without the tomato-y dipping sauce. I might seriously get a double order of them as a main course next time. Except that I want to try more of their stuff. Someday, though. (Dumplings as an entree is normal for me, and should be normal for more people!) Prices are on the high side; many entrees are more than $20. Also they make it clear that there will be a 20% surcharge, and although that disclaimer suggests that you might end up tipping beyond that, my bill didn't have a spot to add a tip, so maybe that surcharge is actually an instead-of-tipping situation. Which I like, but the messaging is confusing. Free parking, a unique perk for this area, although when they're busy they'll run out of spaces. Those dumplings, you guys. read more

Didn't know I needed Chicken Thenkthuk in my life until coming here. Gorkha palace is fully responsible for taking my Tibetan food virginity and I think I'm in love Thenkthuk (Hand-pulled noodle soup - chicken, daikon, spinach, edamame, tomatoes, soy sauce) is a soup meant to keep nomads warm over a long Tibetan winter. It was warm, subtlety spicy, and deeply savory and flavorful - aka comfort in a bowl. It tasted familiar, yet unique and new - kind of like rediscovering a favorite song you used to listen to. Gorkha Palace is sort of a hidden gem IMO. The storefront is a bit easy to miss, but now it'll forever be on my mind. It's an Indian/Nepalese/Tibetan restaurant, so there's dishes (like thenkthuk) that you won't find at a typical Indian restaurant. Momo (Steamed dumplings - onion, cabbage, ginger, spices) is (are?) always so fun to eat, like little pockets of love tbh. Today, after possibly a year and a half, I made my way back to Gorkha Palace. I was stunned when I walked in to find all of the cultural ambience removed. It is now this large grey box. Whomever owns it now has wiped it clean of any Indian, Nepali and Tibetan culture. That's very depressing. The service is, maybe Fair...at best. And the food is bland...with over-cooked chicken, thick 'n paste-like sauce and dry veggie samosas. I was looking forward to this experience. My solo dining experience where I could eat, drink and read a good book...all while being submerged in the cultural flair and smells that take me across seas. None of that exists in this grey box. We'd heard multiple times that Gorkha Palace is the best spot for Indian food in the area, but the prices stopped us from ordering for 3 years or so. Yes, the prices are $5+ per entree comparatively, but I can understand why. The location is expensive to keep a lease, I'm sure, and the flavors seem really special and deep. We ordered chicken biryani at medium heat, lamb vindaloo at Thai chili pepper heat, 2 garlic naan, broccoli pakora, and mango lassi. Four sauces were included, all very calming and 2 minty with a cucumber twist. So good. The total came to $75 and I went to the restaurant to pick up. Solid tip -- check that you have all the items you ordered before you leave! One of my items was forgotten but I don't live far away so it wasn't a problem. Chicken Biryani -- 5/5 loved this. The rice was nicely flavored and it came with a lot. This could be split by two people. Loved the cashews and raisins included, and there were generous pieces of meat. Would order again! Lamb Vindaloo -- 5/5 my husband got this and loved it. He loves spicy and ordered it in the Thai chili pepper heat. It's not often he finds something too spicy, he says this is one of the spicier things he's tried! The curry wasn't too thin or soupy and he's so excited to eat the leftovers later. Garlic naan -- 4/5 alright! I love garlic and I love naan. This naan has a slight sweet taste to it, which is unique and so nice. I kicked one star just because I'd have loved it to be more garlicky and you get one naan per order for $4.50/$5 apiece. Broccoli pakora -- 4/5 could just be me but I hadn't seen broccoli pakora before!! I'm happy to see another veggie option. I think these could have been crispier. I understand it's hard to keep things crispy when it's takeout though!! I'd definitely order it again, even with it being a lil less crispy. Mango lassi -- 5/5 not too sweet and not too strong of a flavor. Very liquidy! Not yogurty or like ice cream. Honestly I have only had lassi one other time and it was years ago, I have no idea how it's supposed to taste. But it was good! And I'd get it again. So, in general, we loved our order. I've been wanting to try this place for a while now. After taking a wrong turn on my way home from work, I drove right past it and couldn't wait any longer! So for our special New Year's Eve dinner I ordered some up online through their website! COVID INFO: Order takeout on their website, pick a time, they will email you the confirmation, then they will send you a second email confirming pickup time. When you get there just call to say you're there to pickup a take out order. They'll ask your name and check to see if it's done. When they confirm it's done, they'll tell you it's safe to walk in and grab from the pickup table. I ordered Lamb Sekuwa (it comes with lentil soup), a small momo combination platter, and chicken curry. They provided a ton of white rice on the side! The best item we ate has to be the momos! Perfect little pouches full of beautiful flavors dunked in the delicious sauce! The next best thing was the curry, perfect heat for me at a medium level. Overall a solid curry, not the best in town, but it went down quick and warmed my soul! The lamb was dry as lamb should be, not overly chewy, but not our favorite menu item combined with the side of lentil soup. It wasn't bringing the flavor as much as the others. Overall, I would love to order from here again and try more from the menu like the biriyani or other popular menu items. With some of the flavors they were bringing I think this place could be a 5! Downtown and a good sized parking lot to pull into! Not hard to get into off a one-way street. read more

Gorkha Palace is easily in my top 5 restaurants in the Twin Cities so far (I just moved here in July). I do have a few things to say about it though: Cons: -the service here is not the best. We've been here several times and it seems like there's only ever had 1 server and it takes forever to order and get our food. Last time we were there, the owner said she was training another server so who knows? -portions could be bigger for what we're paying. The food is absolutely delicious and I wish we had more of it, especially if we're paying a good amount. But then again, the food is the biggest pro. Pro: -the food , the food, the food! Our favorites are the Momos (chicken is delightful but all are good!), Goan Shrimp Curry, Goan Lamb Chili, Aaloo Bhindi. Literally such a party in my mouth every time we have them! This is my first experience of eating something different from Thai, Korean, Lao style food. Indian food is different and i enjoy the meal I had. I am not a big fan of vegetables so excuse me for not eating my veggies. I did, however try all the food that came out. The Naan (garlic & cilantro) was yummy. The dough was light and yummy because of the butter. The momo was super good, if you like spicy definitely try the hot sauce, it has a good kick to the flavor. My friend order the chicken coconut curry and it was really good. The spicy newari choyla was good, however i thought it was actually spicy but it wasn't. There is nothing against that and everyone spice tolerance is different. I am not sure what daal is made of but it had a thickness to it. Also, the potatoes salad was different, i could taste flavor but I'm not a big fan. Lastly, the bean, im not sure what it was but it taste like a salad with peanuts. I like the crunch; but im not a big fan. Drink: the mango lassi was oka, i am not a big fan of gingerly drinks. Maybe next time I will try something different. If what I read here is correct, the place is under new ownership, which might explain some of the older reviews compared to my own experiences here. I just moved back to Minneapolis after 22 years away and was delighted to find Gorkha in my new neighborhood. I have been to GP three times in the past month and can't wait to go back. Each time I went with a different friend and all agreed the food was really good. They have a whole page of Indian street food that I am slowly working my way through. The Golgappe are these little semolina shells that you fill with potato two chutneys and "spicy water" they are great flavor bombs that are making my mouth water as I write this. The Chole Bhature is yummy deep fried bread that gets even better when you top it with the flavorful chickpea masala that comes with it. I've also had the combo Momo dumplings which were good, but not as flavorful as the other street food apps I have gotten. For mains, I've had the Chicken Shahi Korma which is my favorite so far as well as the Chicken Makhani and Chicken Tikka Masala which were also good, but not as complex as the Shahi Korma. I got a can of diet coke that seemed past its sell by date, but that is a small quibble compared to the joy this place brings to me. The ambiance is nothing to write home about and there are a few outdoor tables that are great when the weather is nice. Even if they aren't set up for service the staff will let you sit out there if you ask. Service is friendly and a bit mom and pop. It gets five stars because the food is deeply satisfying and they have a big menu that I can't wait to explore further. Yum. read more

I've been to fancy places. I've been to dives. I've been to the Sri Lanka Curry House for price-your-own entree night. I live near Devon Avenue in Chicago and have tried them all. This is the best Indian and Indian-adjacent food I've ever had. Nini was a fantastic server-- great recommendations, perfect pacing, delightful personality. You know, I've often held Gorkha in high regard as my favorite indian food in Minneapolis. We recently ordered a few curries for delivery. The rice was wet, without flavor. Hard to describe. The texture was all wrong. The curry was bland and runny and the chicken seemed extra fatty. I was really disappointed. So disappointed that I cooked my own the following day and somehow that was much better? Gorkha's food has been so rich and flavorful, with thick wonderful textures. I am mixed about this review. I feel that ethnic diversity in the food in Minneapolis is not really that great, so when I find a place like Gorkha, I want to support it. Also, we always get Momos - which are hard to find here, and their momos are good, too. I am also a fan of their garlic naan. The people that work here are very nice, too. However, this is mixed up part - we have come here many times for take out and they have never not messed up our order. The wrong food, the wrong quantity, things missing, losing our order when we go to pick it up, a bit calamitous all around. It's fine. I like that the spinach dishes are not blended into baby food, and the naan is top notch. The tikka and the coconut chicken are heavy on dairy and so a little watered down, and the chicken was generic white meat. Samosa was good. Momos were ok, not the luscious dough wrapped meat you come to expect, more microwave like. The chicken dishes were heavy on basil to the point of tasting like licorice, and occasionally burnt garlic. The main issue is it's incredibly overpriced. $22 for an entree is ridiculous in any city, but especially this one. read more

Make a reservation! I came here on a Friday night with a few friends and we opted to just sit at the bar to not wait but I think generally table is preferred! The service here is amazing! From the original group we started out as, we had some more join us and they were really accommodating and nice about it even though it was definitely confusing for them. We ordered a lot of garlic naan and rice to share then each choose entrees. I got the Chicken Coconut which has organic chicken, cucumber, basil, in tomato onion sauce with coconut milk $18. The portion is more than enough to share so on my next visit I'll be sharing! The restaurant space itself is small and they have some tables outside. Got the curry and the chicken was vet cooked and watery curry with subpar taste. And charge a pretty hefty price for the amount. Disappointed to see how this place has gone downhill. I'm doing it-- updating Gorkha to 5 stars. They have been a solid companion for me through COVID, with a simple online ordering system, coupons in my inbox, and a very safe pickup process (call when you're outside for clearance to enter and grab your bag off the counter). I still love the Navarattan Korma but all their curries are great. Some naan bread and a mango lassi and this is a 5-star Northeast meal.
