Like so many of his patients, I discovered him while looking into tonsillectomy procedures. He has done tonsillectomies just about every way possible and has made reducing pain and recovery time his priority. It's also important to note that he's in no rush to cut like so many other ENT's who crank through as many procedures as possible. If he does not see evidence of chronic tonsillitis, he won't do the procedure. We almost had to talk him into it since the infection was low by the time we saw him. Recovery was fast and only required low doses of ibuprofen for the pain. Given the horror stories out there among adults undergoing tonsillectomies this was an outstanding result! Whether true or not, it scared me from having the surgery that I needed to have happen done. I just ignored my problem due to being scared of a painful surgery and recovery. Alas, Dr. Amenta to the rescue!!! I Googled "less painful tonsillectomy" and his name came up. Dr. Amenta uses a less invasive new technology called tissue welding. I had a consult with him, and was immediately put at ease by his intelligent and kind presence, and had the surgery a week later. Within 10 days, I was able to go back to work and within 14, was basically fully-recovered and feeling wonderful. My journey to meet Dr Thakkar was quick. I needed to find the best ENT and oncology surgeon. I had a mass tumor that I neglected during COVID. By the time, I saw my PCP, the mass grew and it was starting to protrude from my face. Dr Thakkar was highly recommended to me by my PCP, and after sharing my health problem at hand... my friends also had great words of Dr Thakkar as a surgeon. I did some research on my own and learned Dr Thakkar was really smart and great reviews. Plus I knew he was skilled from hearing successful surgical stories from my PCP, my dentist and friends. I knew I was in good hands. On my first consult, Dr Thakkar was very informative, ensuring I understood why the mass should be removed, understood the mass would go to pathology for reading (benign or not), risks involved... such as facial paralysis because there are main nerves surrounding the area of the surgery, length of surgery time and what to expect. Especially if facial paralysis. Dr Thakkar recommended my surgery be at one of the best hospitals because there was a nerve monitor machine to avoid facial paralysis at best. During the next 3.5 weeks, Dr Thakkar sent me back to my PCP for tests to ensure health and safety going forward with the surgery, blood tests, EKG, CT SCAN, etc... On the day of surgery, Dr Thakkar met me early on. He went through all the risks again. I was quietly scared, but I also knew he would perform this surgery at his best! The outcome was beautiful!! On my very first visit to Girgis, Dr. Sam spent more than an hour with me. He ordered a CT scan and a full blood panel (turns out I had a deviated septum and low antibody levels for several strains of pneumococcal bacteria, which no doctor had ever told me, or even tested for). Eventually, when we had the results, he patiently went over everything in detail, and recommended surgery. The surgery itself was very smooth and the recovery was straightforward. Two months later, it has been LIFE-CHANGING. I am breathing better and sleeping better. Before the surgery, I generally needed an antihistamine, a decongestant, and a nasal spray every day. I have not taken any of them--not even once--since the surgery.
