A review just popped up about the Dark Horse and it brought back one of my most favorite moments spent with my Dad, he has been gone since 1984 so yes the Dark Horse has stood the test of time. Highway 36 closed because of ice and we stopped in the Dark Horse until the roads opened again. (Mother was there to drive.) This bar is "world famous", or so the signs say, haha. I can definitely see why it would be, as it's a genuinely pretty cool bar. There's a lot of decor on the wall in the forms of turning gears and the bar has a nice rustic feel to it. This is definitely a casual, relaxed type of bar that serves food, has tons of good beer on tap, and also has a decent amount of arcade games such as cruisin USA, and also air hockey, pool, and darts. My boyfriend and I enjoyed our football games here on Sunday. Started off with some great breakfast burritos. Then, when the patriots game came on, we moved to the room with the big screen for better viewing. I was completely thrown off that a giant Mexican family who seemed to be regulars came in all wearing pats gear..but that's not the point. As soon as the jets kicked off, the lady was instantly screeching and yelling about every single play. It got quite annoying and the man who seemed to be the manager didn't care that she was being so obnoxious and yelling profanities, while her small children took over all the games. It was obvious many people were leaving that space and thank god there are many different rooms and nooks to this bar or I would have left my half full beer. They play awesome classic rock where the games aren't on sound and all of the food looked and smelled delicious. Downfall they didn't have champagne for mimosas. We loved this hilarious, enchanting, somewhat creepy atmosphere. I might go out of my way to show this place off to out of towners but will not be watching my pats play here ever again. read more

I met friends here for the Stanford game last week. The place was packed & we had to wait on line for about 15 minutes to order food. What is impressive is how they prepared for the large crowd with extra staff. The service cranked when the place was slammed, most impressive. The quality was the same. They even have two Avery beers on tap now! Better yet would be more Avery and local beers, but hey, I'm not complaining! Good job DH. read more

A memorable tourist experience. We really enjoyed ourselves here! You have to walk up to a window and order, and you seat yourself. They have two different KINDS of veggie burgers, which is a First! (I have never seen a restaurant offer that before!) The fried veggies were an excellent appetizer, but there's enough that comes with an entre not to need the appetizer. This is definitely a college bar, not a place you want to go for dinner. And probably not a place you want to go if you are not in college. Good: The burgers are great. I had the chipotle burger and the heat was just right. Kicking but not overpowering the other flavors in the burger. Bad: The rest. The fries were cold , stale and somehow completely flavorless, the onion rings were hard and cornmeal battered (something that is never mentioned on a menu - I always feel scammed when I end up with the damn things). The "blue cheese" dressing was a weird ranch flavor missing any resemblance to blue cheese. Service: I could have let the rest go but the service structure of this bar was incredibly annoying. Apparently there is lunch service but in the evenings its self service ( well that makes underage drinking pretty easy ). The place is cool in the falling down a rabbit hole kind of way with its twists and turns but when you are new and don't know the lay out it means you end up walking around aimlessly trying to find out where to order your damn food. Once you do find it (for us it was take a right go up to the bar take a left go to the wall take another right go around to the next room take another left) You then get to stand in a long line. Go up order your food, go find a bar order your drink go back after finding your table and wait for your name to be called over a speaker that is worse than any drive up I have ever heard. "burgh bargrurgle your order is..." "Was that me?" No I think he said burgh bargrurgle". Go up to the same window where you order - which means crossing through the stream of people trying to order food - and look at the zillion baskets sitting there - I imagine because they also are not named burgh bargrurgle. Take your might have once been warm fried food to your table. Realize no one has water (ahh yes no service) Get a pitcher of water. Realize no one has napkins, send someone for napkins. And the best part is all the food comes out at drastically different times so by the time one person is finished another has just been called (maybe - not sure on the name). read more

Best burger in Boulder, hands down. Fun atmosphere and entirely unpretentious. Best of all for this native New Orleanian, today (5/3/14) they had a CRAWFISH BOIL! I've been in Colorado for nearly 9 years and have been to restaurants touting themselves as "Cajun" or "Southern" who couldn't deliver when it came to a good old-fashioned crawfish boil. I just went to this place for the first time to watch the Broncos game. The crowd was nice and it looks decent but the bartending service was slow and the food was terrible. I can't even believe how much I spent for cheese fries and chicken fingers. I'm disappointed to say the least. read more

I'm so sad to say that I will never be returning to this establish again. I have loved and supported The Dark Horse for my years living in South Boulder. I gained a good relationship with the bartenders and always had a postive experience until last night 3/25 about 11PM. I walked in very excited to drink a beer and get fries and play a game of pool. After showing the Bouncer both our IDs (We're 26 and 28) He started this weird line of questioning about our day and then decided he will did not want us to come in. Now, we were not heavily intoxicated by any means and brought zero disrespect or problems that is not who we are... After the Bouncer randomly selected us to bully and pick on.. we left...My friend looked over at me and asked...Is there a chance it was because of your race (African American) that we were just treated like that...and that was the ONLY explanation we both felt to how that experience went. I have NEVER had an issue with a Bouncer or security in my life... I will miss the curly fries..and the awesome vibe inside...however... i will never step foot into Dark Horse again and i will always feel as though I will be unwanted there. Rounding out our evening in Boulder, it was late, we wanted beer and wings and a burger! Couldn't have found a better option. Focusing on getting you what you need, efficiently, the late night kitchen is a walk-up window. Get your order in, hit the bar and sit down! Sometimes you don't want table service...you want your food! I got my grease fix with some wings (full chicken wings) that could have used more sauce (I love sauce), but were hearty and well portioned.My friends got a classic cheese burger and destroyed it in minutes. The bar was bump'n that night since it was karaoke. Thankfully there is the non-karaoke side of the restaurant that successfully filters out most of the..errr.....fun....going on over there! The bartenders were great, letting us sample are way through most of their stuff on tap before doubling down on some great local brew. This place is an institution. My mom used to go here back in the '70s and I started going back in my college years. It is a guaranteed stop every time I'm in town for a football game. Great burgers, great curly fries with tasty ranch and great drinks. I can't complain. Not to mention all the oddities hanging from the ceiling and posted on the walls. Can't forget to mention the starving student meal deal either, which includes a burger, fries and a beer for around $7.00. Can't beat that as a college student! I have a lot to say about the Dark Horse. I have some great memories here. Nostalgia aside, this place is still in business because they have nailed down a solid approach. The Dark Horse is like a choose-your-own-adventure bar. They have a totally hidden room on the second floor that is booked sometimes for parties, but if it's not it can be a great escape if you want to have a nice conversation in a bar. There's also a cute(?) wall-o-80's-porn by the air hockey table. The pool tables and cues are almost not usable, so you've been warned. Cheap beer, awesome decor, could hang out there for hours. Only downside is that it's kinda not near anything. Didn't have the food there so I can't comment on that, but the atmosphere was awesome. Even if it's not on Pearl Street, this is still my bar of choice in Boulder, especially since I can walk to my house from here (win!). I especially enjoy the fact that it's one of the very few places that the Boulder Bourgeois do NOT frequent. So if you're looking to see REAL Boulder people, and avoid the snoot-snot yuppies, this is your bar! It's nice that it's one of the only bars I can think of where it's good to go to most any time of day, even moreso during the summer with that awesome patio they have. The Dark Horse has a really great, no bullsh*t vibe. They have the friendliest staff in Boulder; even the kitchen crew actually have smiles on their faces when they're working. For real, have YOU ever seen a kitchen crew at other famous spots in Boulder actually SMILING to customers? Yeah, it's really rare, but not at this place. Their bar food is so delicious, and it makes me so happy that they'll toast the buns without you needing to ask. Really, I don't think I can think of another bar in Boulder (or Denver) that is actually creative with their activities, gives out so many prizes, has decent drink prices, and fabulous bar food. Liked it better 40 years ago, the last time I was there. No children back then, and not an appropriate venue for kids, especially families with 5-6 under 8yrs... I really wanted to give Dark Horse more stars but at the same time, now wish i could give zero. As a long time customer, I've enjoyed the laid back atmosphere that once existed. The beer selection was once superb, though somewhat limited. Now popular and high qaulity seasonals quickly leave and never appear again. The usual picks are now a handful of the least good picks with a bunch of coffee beers and other bland choices. At times only one from Odells is available though the brewing company has to beg just to get one of their beers on tap. The bar service on its best day is inconsistent. The heavy set manager is rude as are some of the other staff. The once decent food is absolute garbage. Burgers arrive gross, bloody and raw. Its clear that both the people serving and making food are high, drinking while on the job, or have just stopped caring. The management hate people and hate their jobs. They will make excuses. A once very cool bar with down to earth people has become a place with snooty staff who fail to realize its actually just a dump. Dont waste your time with this place. read more

First off the burger tastes like charcoal fluid lol c'mon so sad bc the fries are very good! The thing that really rubbed me wrong was the bartenders will send you away with two drinks. That's okay... But this bus boy, who they probably will not move up, showed up at our table and asked my girlfriend for her i.d. And on top of that asked for another form by the way she is 24! Quite the interesting place. The place is set up so there are multiple rooms all with lots of items on the walls. It is pretty dark, so I wouldn't go there with the elderly. The bathroom signage takes some thought so you might want to scope it out before you have anything to drink. The Jiffy Burger is one of the world's best burgers. Who knew that peanut butter goes better with bacon and hamburger than with chocolate? Best part was it only cost like $6.50 to find out. Rocky mountain oyster was interesting. Dive bar with plenty of vintage decorations. You order and serve your own food. Bathroon signs are reversed so pay attention when you stumble in. This place has been raved a lot before I came in, so I was not very thrilled when I walked in. But it's pretty good for being a dive bar. It can get busy real quick. Was kinda hoping for more here. i went with the jiffy burger. it was meh. the peanut butter was enticing, however it clearly overwhelmed all the other flavors, and the final taste was a toasted peanut butter sandwich, which for $7, I'll do in the comfort of my own home. Hubby and I stopped here for lunch today. He has been RAVING about the fried egg and ham burger he had here 2 months go. He got the same thing and I order and regular old cheeseburger with bacon. The prices are good, mine was $4,89 and came with fries, a salad, or pasta salad. I got the curly fries which were a little seasoned. In all likely blew my calories for the entire day, but it was a good burger. I am allergic to mayo, so the reason I gave 4 stars was I had to send mine back when I had specifically asked for no mayo. I was really glad to have spent my last night in Boulder at Dark Horse. I can't really review the food or drink 'cause I came here just for trike night, which was HILARIOUS! The short, on Tuesdays and Thursday around 10 ish 2-person teams start competing to ride tricycles around the bar while taking a shot and chugging a beer in between in the fastest time possible. Sounds easier than it is; so many people ate it on the corners. I recommend going to at least watch. read more

Came here on our way through boulder on vacation. I immediately loved the decor and the rustic nature of the place but honestly was really disappointed with the food. Everyone at the table got different burgers and sandwiches and yet we all thought they tasted a little off. It was disappointing because this place looked like such a cool little local joint but turned out to be pretty sub-par. I recommend just going for the beer and the sides, veer and French fries are always good! read more
