    Pliny and pepperoni
    Mateo E.

Backcountry Pizza has been one of my default spots in Boulder for years, one of those places that's always good if pizza and great beer are in play. This was my first trip with kids in tow. Two dads, three boys. What could go wrong? After our server stopped by, we settled in with soft drinks and IPAs (age-depending), then ordered a couple pies. The kids went for the video games and pool table. There are plenty of TVs w sports if that's your thing. We watched Ohio State finish off Texas until our pizzas came out. Not long. Pizza at Backcountry has been consistently solid for decades. Today was no exception. It's not fancy, but is done well. The pepperoni earns a special badge for being better reheated at home than hot on the table. Remarkably so. I'll take one home next time. Frankly, the tap list is the star here from our POV, a factor that can put Backcountry over the top in choosing a spot. I had my first Blind Pig here in 2010. It's still featured on a well-curated list (along with Pliny the Elder) with various styles of legit microbrew all-stars--enough to never order mids. Maybe someday, I'll try one of the sandwiches or other items. They look good, too. That just means I'll have to go back.

Food: hands down the BEST garlic knots I've ever had. Ever. Well worth the 15 min wait. Salads are excellent and pizzas are solid with customizable options up the wazoo. (They don't even care if you do a half and half on a small pie! They encourage you, in fact.) Beverages: amazingly robust selection of beers (they have a beer cellar for large format beers, even). Coca-Cola products!! Woohoo! Service: as alluded to above, they are all super accommodating and kind. Bartenders, servers, expediters, hosts-- all are just really nice and good at their jobs. Ambiance: laid back and woodsy with pool tables and some clutch arcade games. We love the bar where we can watch the games, too. Bonus: SUPER reasonably priced and good music selection.

We happened upon this place because we had some time to kill before a football game and it was close enough to walk. I found this place to be way better than the reviews! It was packed and I was able to grab the last table. Our server was efficient and friendly and checked on us multiple times. It wasn't trendy but a great laid back place to hang out and have a beer- which they had a lot to offer on tap. We ordered a pizza and I found it to be really yummy. The base was thick enough to hold all the ingredients but not too thick. The sauce had a nice flavor that married all the toppings together well. The crust was sort of braided and tasted so light and airy. I was impressed overall.

Ordered a pizza to go at lunch time. They quoted me a time on the phone and the pizza was ready for pick up at exactly that time. That's big. The pizza itself was fine but nothing special. It looked excellent but flavor was only average. I am a pretty harsh critic of pizza and always looking for a great one. This doesn't sniff great but if you are just a pizza fan this will do the trick. I won't likely return here for pizza but the interior seemed like a fun place to hang out.

Our pizza was huge and delicious-the beer selection was more than adequate-service was very good. I will definitely return!

    Pliny the Younger!!!!! EEK!

I've been here a handful of times usually after a long day of skiing for a hot slice of pizza. We love that Backcountry offers by the slice as well as full pies and other tasty appetizers. I love love love this crust. It's sweet and always cooked just how I like it, not too thick or doughy and not the charred crust some shops seem to go for. I got a single slice of pepperoni and sausage which hit the spot after a big day on the mountain. Now for the big news!! We stopped in yesterday afternoon and boy were we in for a treat. Backcountry was having Pliny the Younger day! I had never seen this beer in CO and have been following Russian River brewing after first hearing of the elusive Pliny the Younger triple IPA several years back. Knocked my socks off and i'm not usually a huge IPA gal. The bartender let us know that it was a super limited guest tap so hurry in for a taste! Great pizza, great beers on tap and awesome service! :)

Still one of the best craft beer selections you'll find. Had two great beers there. The pizza was also good. Local hangout. The outside could use a facelift, but once you get inside the staff will make you feel right at home.

It felt like the kind of place you'd want to spend an afternoon. The real standout was RJ behind the bar. He was welcoming, personable, and genuinely fun to talk to. His smoked Old Fashioned was fantastic and easily the highlight of our visit. In fact, we'd absolutely come back just to grab a drink and chat with him. Unfortunately, the food told a completely different story. We ordered the fish and chips, and it was one of the most disappointing versions of the dish I've ever had. The fish tasted like it had been cooked in oil that desperately needed to be changed. It was dark, overly greasy, and had that unmistakable burnt-oil flavor that overpowered everything else. Instead of light and crispy, it was heavy and saturated with grease. The fries somehow tasted more like fish than the fish itself, which was...impressive, just not in the way anyone hopes for. Then came the coleslaw. Calling it "slaw" feels generous. It was mostly dry kale with almost no dressing. If someone had told me it was meant to start a campfire, I would've believed them. It was so dry it could've doubled as kindling. The meal was disappointing enough that we decided not to order anything else, which was a shame because we had been looking forward to trying more of the menu. West End Tavern has all the ingredients to be a great spot--a beautiful space, an incredible whiskey selection, and a bartender who knows how to make guests feel welcome. I genuinely hope the kitchen takes another look at the fish and chips because, right now, it's doing the rest of the restaurant a disservice. Five stars for RJ and his smoked Old Fashioned. The fish and chips, though...let's just say the fryer deserved a vacation before we did.

From game days (televised or board/card) to happy hour catch ups I love coming here for the laid back and family friendly vibes. I've enjoyed having my birthday party here for the last handful of years (they have amazing event space). As it's family friendly my crew always feels happy to bring their well behaved little one along. While my friends are sure to bring activities for their kiddos (books, toys, educational iPad devices) some folks aren't as considerate. I've definitely had the unfortunate experience of kids running amuck while their parents are fully attentive only to their brewskis. This was particularly disturbing as I've been recovering from a knee injury for several months and my partner has often been with me and on crutches. Would love to see people take more responsibility for their children's behavior when taking them out in public for everyone's safety. While it's Boulder afterall I hold hope that parents will look after their kids if they decide to bring them in or drop them to the nearby kiddos climbing facility if they wanna play. Looking forward to many more good times with friends at this awesome locally owned gem.

For food, we each got a side Caesar salad. Large and with lots of flavor, they were very good. We each then got the Mediterranean pizza. I added chicken to mine. My wife liked hers, while I was disappointed in mine. I didn't find the flavor to be great, and the crust was rather flimsy and disappointing. Pizza here on our first visit had been great, so again, this was disappointing. Service was friendly enough. I'm sure we'll be back again.

One of our favorite things during the pandemic when restaurants could reopen was picking up their in house chicken pot pie. It's my husband's absolute favorite chicken recipe which I used to make myself. Though I am unable to make it now that l have lost a lot of vision and not a single one we have bought elsewhere was sufficient until we ordered from The Post Boulder. After a short time it became too labor intensive for the Post to make in house back then with limited staff so they contracted with a pie facility in Denver. Compared to their own it was merely adequate so we moved on to there other in house specialties. As we were ordering gold specials for Sunday!s big game, I saw that the daily specials now include Chicken Pot Pies Thursday's so we went to try it. This ficus a personal size freshly made this morning it was nice to have for a meal with a side salad. But though good, it was not as hearty as the one we loved 5 years ago. Staff was friendly and attentive and my husbands favorite beer (El Korn) was on tap and my iced tea was customized perfectly . We even brought most of the salad home as it was a large serving for a lunch. We'll be back on Sunday for our wings and other treats that we need to pick up. And we can come back again for a lunch or dinner as the have more items for people like me who cannot eat fried chucked, with their grilled chicken or salmon.
