We came here on a Sunday afternoon and found a table quickly. The ordering is done at a window then they call your name and you pick up the food. It definitely made things faster. The people were super nice at the order window and the bar. The food was excellent. My son and I both had a cheeseburger and fries. His was gone in a flash. My husband had the mexi-bean burger and said it was delicious. My daughter had the kids chicken tenders and she just kept telling me how good it was (she's 5). The prices are unbelievable too. Out of everything here, I think the uniqueness of the building is what stole my heart. The food is good too--typical American comfort food: tasty, salty, and savory. Perfect for the ambiance of a diner-turned-bar. It's perfect to relax in one of their many sports, kick back and watch a game in their multiple giant screens. The first thing I noticed was the No table service...order at the kitchen window... different but effective...this place is full of character...there are TV's placed in strategic locations but I think a few more would help. I went with two other guys and we all ordered hot wings. The food is not bad, and it's not great it's just solid. As far as being in a sports bar this place looks like during the right time it's a great place to be. I've been coming here for about a year with friends and family because the food is good and the drinks are reasonably priced. After last night I will never go back, me and my friend walked up to the bar to order drinks while the bartender was mid bite in his food, no problem! Everyone's gotta eat! Take your time! That was not the problem. The problem was when he simply wiped his hands on a towel and didn't actually wash them. He then proceeded to make our drinks which involved squeezing limes by hand into our glasses. I woke up this morning sick. Came here extremely hungover after a night of music at Planet Bluegrass. The Bloody Mary here is downright upright. Ordering my second one now. The place is dark, old school, and a perfect cure for a hangover. Fish n' Chips perfectly breaded. Served with the most delicious homemade tartar sauce I've ever had. Best bar so far during my CO trip. Happy hour margaritas were buy 1 get 1 free and very tasty. I had the Rocky Mountain oysters (these are so hard to find!) and they were incredibly delicious!!! Interesting place. Lots of cool decor. Dark Horse has been open for 45+ years, and I know people that went there as kids. They have many different rooms, including 2 bars and seating areas, an outside patio, and an upstairs area where a group can take their food & beverages up to hang out and eat/drink. There are popcorn machines, pool tables, and much more to explore. You have to walk around this place to check out the plethora of wacky decorations. The food is mostly "bar food", though I heard the burgers are great. The coleslaw is homemade, and that's what I ordered. Oh, and I almost forgot, AMAZING drink prices! :) read more

This place is absolutely terrible. Not at ALL WHAT IT USED TO BE. Went there on a Tuesday night to get a beer and burger with a couple friends at 9:30. The guy at the front was on a power trip and observed my ID for over five minutes, even though I am 24, and decided it was necessary to inform me after that it expires in over a year. Then this expert ID reader decided that my friend from Germany's passport card was not sufficient enough for him to be let in and called up management which ultimately made him walk home to retrieve his passport in order to be let in. I felt bad and decided to get him a beer and after waiting 15 minutes for service at the bar the bartender asked to see my party's IDs even though in order to get in you had to be 21. When I was under 21 with my family this place kicked me and my family out after 9 due to me being under 21 and it being their "GOLDEN RULE". When I asked the bartender why my party's ID must be seen after 9 due to the logistics of this "GOLDEN RULE" of kicking minors out after 9, he still insisted on seeing my party's IDs and told me the cut off was moved to 9:45pm (even thought at this point it was 9:45) After telling my friend to come to the bar in order to retrieve his beer the bartender thought he was slick and charged me $7.50 per beer. After robbing me the bartender proceeded to serve others and I knew it would take me another 30 minutes to get his attention again. So I cut my losses and decided to order food (which is pretty good here), however after ordering a burger and wings that came out to a staggering total of $28.50 I realized that the prices for this food had gone up significantly from when I was in college. Within the first 40 minutes of me being here I was absolutely livid. I will not be returning here anymore and I encourage everyone else to do the same. Outside of the food this place sucks and now knowing how much the food costs it sucks even more. I don't know what happened but they must of had an incident which almost cost them their liquor license. Instead of solving the problem they seemed to have made it 10x worse. read more

I am a regular but will never go back. Never had a problem until now. The bald guy that runs karaoke was extremely rude to me and accused me of cheating. At karaoke. I explained what happened very clearly and calmly and even apologized but he did not want to listen and was very sarcastic and demeaning. The ceiling on this side is just ridiculous as you can see from my photos. We ordered food, played some games and few rounds of pool. It was pretty packed for Thursday night. Boulder Colorado is a beautiful city just north west of Denver and I was pleased to find out that I would be staying in the city at the foot of the mountains. But I had no idea where I was going to grab a bite to eat. I looked at my favorite app (Yelp) for some help but the restaurants it was showing me just dint tickle my curiosity. So I asked around and what I heard from the people I spoke with around here was that I had to go to The Dark Horse. The outside isn't much to look at but once you step inside you are wowed by the wood pillars, paneling, wheels and sleds, and curiosities tied to the ceiling. Its a place to behold. I took a moment and walked around just to Ake in all the ambiance. I sat down in a booth to take advantage of their free WiFi but noticed that the restaurant is "Self Service". Patrons have to go to the bar for a drink and the kitchen window for food. I wasn't too keen on that but ce la vie. I found my perch at the bar facing the dance floor. At least I wouldn't have to walk far to get a drink, was my thought. I ordered a Voodoo IPA and after a few minutes walked over to order my food. I asked for an original burger and asked for cheese on it, so they bumped it up to a cheeseburger. And along with that I asked for a side of hot wings. I returned to my perch and worked on my articles until I heard my name called over the PA system (about 15 minutes). But when I returned to my perch for the second time I noticed that there was no cheese on the burger. I checked the receipt and the paper that the kitchen had stabbed into the burger and confirmed that it said "cheeseburger". So I got up again, went to the kitchen with my plate and explained what went wrong. The guy working as the cashier started to argue with me and I explained that I had asked for cheese and showed him the receipt. So he took the top bun off my burger, grabbed the patty and threw it on the grill.........with the same hand he had been working the cash register. Cash is probably the most dirty thing anywhere. I didn't want to make a scene. He didn't like that I had pointed out the kitchen's mistake and if I pointed something else out.......who knows what would have happened. Lol - yuck I took my burger with cheese this time and went to the table. I cut it open and saw that it was D-R-Y. I couldn't tell if it was because of the initial preparation or because he failed to get me a new patty and recooked it on the grill. But it was pretty inedible. I pushed it off to the side and ate the wings which weren't too bad. The bartender asked if I was done with the hamburger that was only cut open and I said "yes". This is another side product or result of having two systems in a restaurant. In a more traditional restaurant the bartender would have asked if the burger wasn't to my liking....since it wasn't touched.But no such inquiry. I never saw a manager or someone who looked like one, nor did I ask to see one. I was coming here for the experience and that's what i got. Since this experience i read through an arm's length of reviews on this Yelp site and I've found responses from both side of the spectrum. They are either raving about it or had a terrible experience. My take on this is that the resturant fails to have certain checks for quality of food and service. This will no doubt continue until the manager or owner takes a stronger hold on the staff. I for one, will stop with the family to walk in and show them the decor and then we'll leave to eat and drink somewhere else. I give 2 stars because of ambiance and decor, and the wings weren't too bad. read more

USA Today proclaims The World Famous Dark Horse as one of the "Places to eat a burger worthy of paradise". The food is absolutely below mediocre. Got a Hickory Burger and my friend got the Chipotle Burger, both with fries. Burgers wasn't that flavorful, fries were soggy and no even seasoned. I've had Burgers far more flavorful and even taste better than here. Its cheap food but not even worth the visit. read more

This place is like sensory overload. The sights, the sounds, the smells... but not the taste. The sights... there is random stuff everywhere you look. Expect to see wheels hanging from the ceiling, gigantic burger sculptures, articles about sex, confusing bathroom signs, naked photos of women, and funny art. It's definitely for a college crowd. While there were some older people there, I'm glad my Mom wasn't one of them. She would have hated it. So heads up, not the best place for kids/teens or conservative adults. The sounds... went on a Friday around 7pm and there were college kids getting ready for the night. It wasn't crazy or packed with drunk people yet, but it was already starting to get boisterous. I imagine it gets really loud as the night goes on. It's more quiet upstairs so we opted for that area. The most distracting noise was the guy shouting out names for orders when they were ready. It's an experience for sure - finding where you're supposed to go to order and then standing around waiting for your name to be shouted. The smells... you'll smell decades of beer soaked floors the moment you walk in. If you dislike beer, this is not the place for you. But if you like beer, it's cheap here. So that's a definite plus. The taste... as much as I'd like to say the "world famous" spot had world famous burgers, they didn't. They were pretty bland and basic. I should have opted for the jiffy burger, I think that one would have at least been memorable. I did however really like their fried zucchini and shrooms appetizer. I also liked their fries - they weren't crispy, perhaps a bit too soft, but it was more about the seasoning. They use tons of pepper on their fries and I loved it! Overall, it was a cool spot to check off the list, but don't know that I'd go back again unless I've had a bit to drink beforehand. read more

Classic dive bar, always a fun hang. It can be raucous and chaotic at times, the PA that lets you know your good is ready works except when it doesn't. Can be very crowded at times.
